He was too tough for his own good. If you look at his record, he was also possibly mismanaged. For some reason, sans Jackson and a shot to pieces Mugabi, he didn't fight anybody at all. Knocking out overmatched opponents in a single round repeatedly is not going to prepare a fighter for a fight with Nigel Benn. Presumably they were trying to build up an aura around him but there has to be a reason why he was so untested, and losing two early fights on points might have something to do with it. It was very obvious from round 2 that McClellan simply wasn't as good as advertised despite his incredible gifts. He tried to box Benn but he simply wasn't able to and his defence was pretty much non-existent. The guy very obviously had ATG power and chin. If he'd been anywhere near as good as the hype suggested he'd have beaten Benn. As it is, he simply wasn't. His natural gifts almost won him the fight but they also probably contributed significantly to his downfall.

It is very, very unlikely that the accidental clash of heads caused the damage. The signs were there for rounds before this, not to mention the evidence that he had experienced problems prior to the fight. It's possible that the clash of heads was bad. It looks extremely innocuous but looks can be deceiving. It is also possible that GM wanted out of the fight because he was filled with a tremendous sense of impending doom due to his injuries. He must have been confused and very, very frightened and the clash of heads seemed to offer a way out.
