Roy Jones jr. The only guy who can talk shit to James Toney and then back that all up in the ring.. this is one of if not the most overlooked clash of greats.. James Toney was a killer and Roy jones out shined Him
This is the fight in which I thought I might be watching the greatest fighter of all time in terms of pure ability in Jones. His speed and athleticism was without equal with great power to boot. With that being said Toney was out of shape for this fight which is too bad because I believe he may have had the superior all around skills and is a defensive all time great. Roy in his prime at 168lbs beats anyone and forget about when he was at middleweight. Nobody in the history of boxing beats him at that weight including Sugar Ray Robinson who's best weight was probably 147lbs. That's not a knock in SRR who's the greatest P4P fighter ever but I'd take Jones at middleweight in a fight between the two.
Ray Robinson would have tested Roy's chin and Hagler would have as well. We all know what happened to RJJ once he started to slow down and his opponents were able to catch up to him. A weak chin is a weak chin and a weak chin never wins against a poweful punch. SRR had the hand speed, the timing and accuracy to connect with Roy and he also had the power to put him away. Hagler was an animal in his prime and had a relentless attack. His ability to switch stances in the middle of a combination would have thrown Roy off and his jab would have a key to the fight. A prime Marvin Hagler could brawl, box from the outside, was a great infighter and had the footwork to cut off the ring on Jones. He would have given Roy a lot of trouble and I'm not talking about the version of him that had almost 70 fights and faced Sugar Ray Leonard. A young Hagler was a whole different story. I agree that RJJ was one of the most physically gifted athletes of all time and that goes a long way in boxing but the other two were also physically gifted in their own right but had more overall skills to bring to the table. I can't say who would have won out of the 3 in any given match up between them but I do think it's ludicrous to put Roy above the other two so clear cut.
Agreement. Sugar Ray Robinson was the best welterweight of all-time, Roy Jones vs Marvin Hagler would be the best non-heavyweight fight of all time, my two favorite fighters.
Grace&Faith There's no way Hagler wins that fight against Jones, he's is a bigger harder punching version of Leonard, look what Leonard did to Hagler, Jones would outbox him and put a big hurting on Marvin.

Roy Jones, again like Tont a legend, super speed, great footwork, and he beat some top fighters , Virgil Hill, Talesco[A hard light heavy weight], B-HOP [who was in his prime]. Both really top of their game fighters, both legends!!
Toney fought at that weight or lower for over six years prior to his fight with Roy, often struggling to make weight. Why is weight suddenly considered a factor? Just because he had his ass handed to him? Besides, it's not like he gassed in the later rounds he was dominated from the opening bell.
Its an excuse him and his fans love to use. The reason y he struggled to make the weight wasn't because he suddenly grew out of the division, Roy was naturally bigger than James. It was that James didn't have the discipline in between fights. His manager Jackie Kallen would have him fight every 6-8 weeks or so. Because she knew if hed have any sort of layoff that he'd either gain a bunch of weight, or he'd get caught up in thr streets. He actually had a 4 month layoff leading into the Jones fight. Which nowadays isn't a layoff at all, but for James it was. He went into camp at over 220 lbs
This (Roy vs Toney) fight was before everyone found out how to beat Roy. You just hafta get him into a corner or against the ropes and then just keep nailing him until he goes down. You may get hit a few times, but keep pounding Roy until he goes down. That's what many dudes did later in Roy's career to beat Roy. Roy is just to hard to beat if you try to box with him at the center of the ring.
“You may get hit a few times.” Don’t you think a “few” times isn’t enough to get knocked out? 😂 Especially by Roy Jones, arguable the most powerful puncher not naturally a heavy weight? 😂 I’m sure you couldn’t take 2 punches from Roy if that’s what a few means to you 😂

Definitely remember this fight.
Relax and occupy your space while we talk Roy
u can tell by James demeanor he knew that weight was gon b n issue. like fuck it Cut da Check lol
Roys trainer looks like an accountant but James Toneys trainer looks like a no nonsense yellow cab driver.
what's a cab? Oh you mean those cars before uber? I remember them.
Real east coast vs. west coast war.
I’m your huckleberry 😈let’s go lol
"Y'all musta fuhGATT."
I'm your Huckleberry. Hahaha
Like listening to Gil Clancy punditry and accent we're that accent from ,where's he from ?
James was drained for this fight, if both toney and Roy came in both 100% Peak I doubt Roy could of done what he did to James the way he did it.
Truth be known this fight was very tame. Too much respect in the ring it seemed.
😂 I’m sure you couldn’t take 2 punches from Roy if that’s what a few means to you 😂
@@Asian2706 I do not think Roy had tremendous knockout power.. He was quick and had good speed.. but more punches in bunches from Roy. And would do a lot of jab, jab and run .. Yes.. I'd like to go a few rounds with Roy.. If you see Roy, tell Roy that I am looking for him.. If I ever do find Roy and we get in the ring.. You better have some dudes ready to take him away on a stretcher.. :-)
@@howlingwolf125y Yeah you’re just trolling. I know you are trolling because you don’t believe what you yourself says. You’re just a hater and that’s it. Even Roy at 70 years old would knock you out with one arm 😂
Roy after losing weight at heavyweight was zapped.
I'm the teacher-Toney
Hahahaha-Jones Jr
“If Toney makes a mistakes he’s gon pay for it”
Love Roy Jones Pensacola Florida Florida guy Florida homie if you give me 100% Roy Jones 100% James Toney Tony when's 100 out of 100
