Upset of the Century, the fight that shocked the world. The greatest upset in boxing history. Buster Douglas, a 42-1 underdog rose from an 8th round knock down only to score a stunning 10th round KO of the previously unbeaten and seemingly invincible Mike Tyson in Tokyo.
It used to be common place back when people used to respect each other in the boxing game. Especially from the heavyweights. Tyson ended acting with class before and after a fight once he came out of prison.
Not at all, you should see what was the expected norm before ali, thats why he was so controversial, a boxer taunting or saying anything negative and not showing outmost respect for their opponent was unheard of. Im not saying Ali himself was a bad influence, I think Ali had the right balance where we all knew he respected people, and his insults were done in a funny way. Its just that your standards are so low because of todays norm, where people just scream absolute nonsense at each other, thats what happens when audiences become international, the lowest common denominator becomes things people with an IQ of 60-70 enjoy, and if they pay, then thats what gets made.

HBO Boxing the way the Sport of Boxing was meant to be covered. What great memories of a time when boxing was a sport that was still fun to follow and watch.
Oliver McCall told Tyson's whole team not to underestimate Douglas after his own fight with him. Tyson had the chance to be fully prepared for his opponent, and he didn't. He still fought a great fight, but at the end of the day, he lost. What happened, happened.
Tyson partied literally all night with bobby brown and a bunch of tokyo groupies the night before the fight. This , combined with tyson underestimating buster douglas, is what cost tyson the fight. Mike is in a much better place since those days. Hopefully mr. Douglas is doing well also. Great warriors, both.
None of that stuff matters. All that matters is what happened in the ring. If Buster lost, he could have said his mother died a week before. Buster fought a great fight. His jab was snapping. He just didn’t have it in him to be a consistent fighter. (In my opinion).
I once read an interview, can’t remember who, and they said that you declare yourself fit when you step on the field, and I think that is correct. I also read an interview with Carl Froch, and he said he always boxed with some kind of injury, and so did everyone else, so excuses are just that. Tyson was off the rails by then, so defeat was a matter of time, and besides he is just a human being.
@@conormurphy7058 I dunno. I think Mike consistently overcame, but was always overrated due to his fan friendly, ferocious style. He became champ and became everybody's favourite, even though he was always the smallest man in the ring. He overcame so many opponents that were bigger than him and highly skilled. But fear was his friend. When the opponent was scared, they didn't stand a chance. Mike was the nightmare man. EVERYONE was scared for Buster, except Buster. EVERYONE was scared for Evander, except Evander. He was consistent, but in a poor era, and never got to be as good as he could have become by fighting better guys and staying strictly disciplined.
@@robroszk both were robbed, because tyson actually ko' d douglas in round 8, and referee richard steele stopped a fight in favor of a losing chavez, for cero reason
Until he started to listen to those fanboys and Don King. He did a standup where he tries to convince people he got robbed but the truth is he was not able to continue. Tyson was a shot fighter and knows where he stands in boxing history. He can still throw a punch he just can't take one anymore and should stay out of the ring.
Such an honest interview. Two warriors who were at war in the ring wanting to take each others heads off, sitting next to each other and discussing and answering questions. Not even security between them as they know the fight stays in the ring. You'd never find this today. True gentlemen and professionals.
Douglas in this shape (physically and mentally) beats any and every version of mike imo. People say Mike didn't take the fight serious, but look at the way douglas was fighting, the speed, the combos, the jab, the constant movement, this was way more than just an off-night for mike, Douglas was all wrong for him. Match maker Micky Duff said douglas was a bad fight for Mike years before they actually fought.
I thought he could always give him trouble too, judging from his early showing against Tucker where he actually lost. But I do think Tyson was on auto pilot and had the attitude of just going through the motions in preparation for this fight.
I didn’t know there was a protest about this. The count by the ref was definitely long, but Buster got up according to how the ref was counting. The ref counted out Mike at 9, but even then, that count was a bit long.
During this time, tyson was considered invincible and undefeatable. This fight took place before social media existed , and i was away at college, so i didnt see the fight or images of buster douglas for some time. When i heard the news of tyson being ko'ed, i was bewildered and wondered "what kind of a monstrous animal could possibly knock out Iron Mike Tyson??!!?". 😂😂😂
Well, Douglas was actually bigger than Tyson, and in reality, probably stronger. But fighting, at that level, is 90% mental and 10% physical, when they're all roughly even. They're ALL big and strong.
No look at tyson he's stomach was popping out no abs no head movement looking for 1 shot no YES Douglas was great here and he's mum died just b4 but Rooney would have bought an ensyl for Tyson's eye if nothing else
I really like how Mike handled himself and acknowledged that Buster won the fight. Larry Merchant was doing his best to cause controversy . Think about how monumental this loss was, a similar defeat but to a legend, destroyed Foreman.and he disappeared for a while
I thought he did, but he still says he won that fight. Love Mike but he got his as whipped. The count, you gotta go with whatever the officials say. If the ref would have said Buster didn't beat the count, that's how it woulda went, he didn't.
Were you alive when this fight actually happened? Larry Merchant was not just “trying to cause controversy.” Mike and Don King had made an attempt to get Douglas stripped of the title, and they were having to back off because of immense public outcry against them. Merchant would not have been doing his job if he hadn’t pressed Mike about it.
@@mozfonkyIt’s amazing to see all these young Tyson fans who weren’t even born when all this happened talking about the long count as a real issue. The public was outraged at what Tyson and (mostly, to be fair) Don King were trying to do. Their “long count” claims were being ridiculed, not taken remotely seriously.
@@oldironsides4107 true but mike wouldn’t ended up on his back if the ref was doing a proper count. Let’s say he had and buster got counted out. It still woulda exposed mike as no longer invincible his eye shut totally outboxed. They’d say it was a miricale he knocked buster out and they’d be right. So even if mike escaped with the win via the ref doing his job, the fight woulda still wrecked Mike’s image. Hed have gone on to defend vs Holyfield and it wouldn’t end much different than Douglas vs holy did. So either way buster did his job that night even if the ref didn’t but it wouldn’t change the course mikes life was heading down and blowing off training. He was heading for defeat, buster got to him first and the ref slow counted there never shoulda been a round 10 for mike to lose in because in the eyes of anyone who can count there was an 8th round knockout but again it wouldn’t change much in the boxing picture. Mike woulda lost vs holy after barely escaping Douglas, his “tune up fight” for holy. Even when mike put buster down in the 8th mikes face was already mangled and busters wasn’t. Mike shoulda still won but its just as well that he didn’t. At least he can blame that face on losing. Id hate to look like that after a win while the other guy looks fine and carry around the damaged pride that not only you but the whole world knows you were lucky to get that one punch to win the fight after getting beat down for 8 straight rounds. Id rather take the loss and just own up to it, but a loss isn’t what shoulda happened. Maybe it’s a good thing for mike that he did lose. Again too embarassing to get your ass beat face mangled and win by one lucky punch when you have the ego and pride and the whole world at the time thinks you’re invincible.
@@EthnHayabusa for sure. Buster even hit the canvas with his glove like he knew he made a slip up. If the refs count was any higher he would have and could have easily gotten up faster.
It isn't a 10 second rule, it's a 10 second count. The referee looks back at the timeskeeper ringside to align their count with the timeskeeper who is keeping the real count. A common misconception is that boxers get 10 seconds flat, they do not, it depends on when the timeskeeper starts the count and the referee makes sure that their count is lined up correctly with the timeskeeper. Sometimes it's a little fast, sometimes it's a little slow, but that's boxing.

Buster went on to fight Holyfield later on in 1990, fought an awful fight and got blown away in just three rounds. He basically took his $24 000 000 and retired from boxing. Holyfield then lost the title to Riddick Bowe in 1992 while Tyson only got another title shot in March of 1996 when he beat Frank Bruno for the second time to get his WBC belt back. He then gave that belt up to challenge WBA champ Bruce Seldon whom he beat without even raising a sweat. Then came the two consecutive defeats to Holyfield and Tyson's aura of invincibility was gone for good. You see, Mike's prime was already over when he fought Douglas, he just was not aware of it. He was a shooting star from the time he turned pro to the time he fought and beat Michael Spinks in June of 1988. After that fight he never looked that good against top opposition in the ring again.
Stop the foolishness! Tyson was never that great of a fighter to begin with. Yes, he had speed and power but he never beat anyone who was considered an all time great. NEVER!
@@lyrical20 True, but Tyson would never have lost to Douglas had he trained properly for the fight and I still think he was good enough to beat Holyfield before he went to prison. After prison it was a different story as Holyfield took him to school twice. Tyson's boxing skills diminished remarkably while he was in prison. He was still able to beat the Frank Bruno's and Bruce Seldon's of this world but not an elite fighter like Holyfield.

Its not 10 seconds, its a count of 10, two very different things. The ref''s count is final. Also the state of Mike during and at the end of the respective counts was very different. Buster was punching the floor in frustration and trying to time his standing up to maximise recovery showing to the ref that he was not in too bad a state. Mike was trying to grab his gum shield and was not fully aware at the count of 10 and the ref clearly responded to that.
I was eating pizza at a local bar pizza place. When Tyson was ko'd , I jumped up so high and was shouting and fist pumping. I was 23. I remember calling him a one eyed cyclops. To me, biggest upset of all time.
And he was ready to get up at any time! His eyes were on the ref counting and when he did get up he continued to dominate the fight! Now let's look at tysons knock down 😆 he was a mess on the canvas looking for his gumshield.. Douglas won the fight.
Mike Tyson wasn't in fight shape and condition for this fight and got his ass kicked. He didn't take it seriously until it was too late. He shouldn't have lost because he is the better fighter, but if you play stupid games, you win stupid prizes. Buster Douglas did the exact samething his next fight. Didn't train and got fat, and got his ass kicked by a very small (non-steroid) holyfield. He would've done much better and probably won against Holyfield if he took the fight seriously. Play stupid games, win stupid prizes.
Crazy to see Buster Douglas saying him signing the contract meant he was going to train hard and use his opportunity to his fullest. Then one fight later in the Holyfield fight he was a quitter.
After beating the supposedly unbeatable Tyson he really had nothing to prove. And no way was he going to beat holyfield even if he went into the holyfield fight like he did the tyson fight. Holyfield can take shots and always goes into a fight 100percent. Tyson was overrated and had never faced a fighter who was going to put him to the test and make him think !! @user-si4nt5gt9b lame comment. Tyson absolutely had a chin. Watch his fight with Razor Ruddick just to name one. Tyson could have been the greatest 100% but that doesn’t mean anything now as it’s ancient history. He didn’t have one single person in his corner and in the back ground that he came up with. Cus, Kevin Rooney, Jim Jacob’s, Bill Clayton all were gone. Guess what happened to Ali when Angelo Dundee wasn’t in his corner? Yep you guessed, he lost and was TKO’d. these are huge factors my friend. I agree Ali is the greatest though.
@user-si4nt5gt9b I think there is a hell of a good possibility that prime Tyson could have destroyed Ali. Tyson was a hell of a lot better fighter than Joe Frazier was. As far as God given talent, they both have that. Ali is superior in the toughness and self belief department, but Tyson is superior in the physical department.
@user-si4nt5gt9b Ali lost to Frazier. Ali lost to guys who were far from as good as Holyfield. And you sound absolutely ridiculous downplaying the impact Cus D'Amato's death had on Tyson.
Right. I guess that's why he lost to a lesser Tyson in Joe Frazier. Tyson is just being humble. Tyson would have never lost with Rooney. He was the secret weapon. They fired Phil Jackson.
It’s common knowledge what Mike was doing the night before right up until the fight lol but still that’s why he gave respect to buster because he F up.
He could have gotten up earlier, he was just listening to the ref. The time clock is irrelevant. The ref paused and made sure Tyson was in a neutral corner, how is that Douglas's fault? Darealdeal

They did not mention Douglas's mother dying that was the motivation in the match!! Tyson will probably beat Douglas in a rematch Douglas is not a motivated fighter. The motivation was his mother's passing and him promising his mother that he would win the championship!!!
Tyson went to jail for rape after this… Buster’s next fight was going to happen no matter what since he earned that shot with Evander, how is this not Tyson’s fault
@Winterwood768-yx9kx You're talking a rematch right away? If Tyson and his team wanted this locked in then they should have included it in the initial contract negotiations in which their team had all the leverage. I don't understand how you can blame Douglas for opting to take an enormous payday to fight the mandatory Holyfield and not have to deal with Don King's bullshit like the lawsuits and contesting the decision. If you are saying they could have fought after Douglas Holyfield, the fight was in October, Tyson already had other fights lined up and then ended up in jail in July, not long to schedule a rematch.
@Winterwood768-yx9kx Dude my bad! I thought you were the commenter from the original comment saying the outcome woulda been diff. I totally agree with what you wrote
For me Douglas beat Tyson fairly, it was a slightly long count but he was lucid straight away cursing himself for being hit by the uppercut. Contrast that to Tyson who was all over the place when he got knocked out. Tyson had a bad night partly because he underestimated his opponent. I'm sure if they'd fought again Tyson would have won but that's not the point. Tyson's team should have accepted the defeat and moved on rather than ruining Douglas 'moment.
(if u didnt watch the entoire interview) Tyson's knock down was also 14 seconds. The vid explains it all and also compares it to other ko'ed fights in the past.
From what i saw the ref counted exactly the same both times, buster moved and went to his corner after the knockdown, allowing the ref time to start his count sooner than when he had to get tyson to his to start. Mike lost, it was very clear i dont know how you can see this and argue that he won that fight, hes even saying he didn't win. Also buster was very much able to get up before 5 or 6 if he wanted to

Leave some room, the count's on the referee, and they both got up at 9. They had the will of legs and choice to step, fall and get back up on that canvas.

The Douglas fight could have been a bad day at the office... All fighters have them.
Yeah but if he trained with Rooney and had cus... lol I am sick of the part time fan boi fans. There was 8 fighters in the 90s who would kill him in his prime.
It's so hilarious to hear Tyson fans try to redefine what a fighter's "prime" is. He was 24. Saying he was mentally weak, unfocused, overly-dependent upon a trainer isn't a defense, it's a legitimate knock. It's not an excuse, it's a criticism. It doesn't make it better, it makes it worse. He was 24, and a 40:1 favorite. He got out-boxed, dominated and KOd.
I didn't know that other accounts. Beside the referee the referee was off 14 count. And then there was a nine count then he stood up. Same thing with Mike the counter isn't wrong. It's a professional account and then the account by the referee was off on both fighters. But I think Mike Tyson said the right words he wasn't going to take nothing away from Douglas. Any kept saying he's looking forward for a rematch. You didn't hear that come out of Douglas's mouth. In my opinion Douglas got very lucky that night. Mike Tyson was being modest he didn't want to come out and say yeah I didn't find a great fight. And he wasn't himself that night. It clearly shows that Mike Tyson wasn't fighting his fight. Mike Tyson hit Douglas so damn hard it down hard. When holyfield hit Douglas Douglas just laid there didn't even get hit that hard

He was so dominant that when I was watching this live with my buddy, we were more impressed by how many rounds Douglass had survived more than the fact that he was thoroughly beating Tyson! Because you had that sinking feeling that at any moment he would land that punch to end it. When the knockdown happened we were like "there it is!" It didnt appear to be long in real time, he seemed like he had his faculties together. Then when he landed that crushing uppercut on Mike and he went down we screamed! My buddy's roommate said "keep it down" because they lived in an apartment complex. We stopped only to hear what sounded like the whole building screaming! My Dad boxed as do I. I went home and woke him at up at some ungodly hour, half drunk and told him the news! He has been gone going on 22 years. Oliver McCall told Tyson's whole team not to underestimate Douglas after his own fight with him. Tyson had the chance to be fully prepared for his opponent, and he didn't. He still fought a great fight, but at the end of the day, he lost. What happened, happened.
Douglas was at the canvas for 13 seconds in round 8
@@BlissDecision And it's Douglas' fault that the ref gave a false count? He got up to fight before he was audibly counted out.
I love in the early days when he says "Ludicrious".
Ludacrith
I've always loved mike's vocabulary and choice of words.
The count synchronization stuff was cool and enlightening. Good stuff.
Saw that interview of Bobby Brown. Much Respect to Mike for not making any excuses.
That's what happens when he disrespected the sport.
TWO GREATEST FIGHTS of 1990 were Douglas v Tyson and Taylor vs Chavez....hands down two fights that had unexpected endings.
@@robroszk both were robbed, because tyson actually ko' d douglas in round 8, and referee richard steele stopped a fight in favor of a losing chavez, for cero reason
its funny how Mike's fanboys were the ones making excuses for him when Mike himself took the loss like a man.
Remember this like yesterday. Recorded it on vhs
You cannot trick mike up with slick questions
Thats true its all up to the ref how fast or slow he counts.
Ur writing sh that every single person here already knows lol
Well, Douglas was actually bigger than Tyson, and in reality, probably stronger. But fighting, at that level, is 90% mental and 10% physical, when they're all roughly even. They're ALL big and strong.
Same here. In college. When i heard, shocking.
Buster was still amped while shaking the hand
No sour grapes here but mike needed Kevin rooney
I dare say that no one would have beaten that version of Douglas, with or without Rooney.
Think about how monumental this loss was, a similar defeat but to a legend, destroyed Foreman.and he disappeared for a while
I agree. If Larry Merchant asked me those questions, I would've answered wrongly. Mike was so well spoken even back then.
Yup, they even got the ref to say he made a mistake. The public outrage shut that right down though.
Buster was up at 14 clearly but the refs count was 9 and that’s what matters.
They both count the same count. Mike was knocked out a minute later hanging on the referee not complaining.
Only winning about 10 seconds of the fighr
We should forget the count and go by the fight Douglas whooped mike bad with all those jabs

Mike is an honest gentleman. I read his book. He is very smart .

For me Douglas beat Tyson fairly, it was a slightly long count but he was lucid straight away cursing himself for being hit by the uppercut. Contrast that to Tyson who was all over the place when he got knocked out. Tyson had a bad night partly because he underestimated his opponent. I miss him dearly, but some of my fondest memories are of watching boxing with him.
Mike had some bumb answers. He had a amateur corner that didn't know how to get their fighter back in the the fight after being behind.Mike didn't have a bad night.Someone else would have lost.Buster gave the blue print on how to beat Mike ,ask Evanda.
Buster got saved by the bell. No way he would have made it otherwise
Buster took it like a champ , he got up & ready to go with or without the bell, Tyson was in another dimension after the KO he needed a hug not to go down again... Buster clearly won that night
Deserved victory for Douglas. The long count was also a point of controversy in Ali vs Liston 2 where ex heavyweight champ Jersey Joe Wallcott was Referee.

Ref counted Tyson out at 9?
Buster said he picked his self up at 6.. that upper cut must have really knocked that boy silly bc he was no where near 6. Buster Douglas stood up at 14 seconds after being knocked down from a lazy upper cut by Mike. The fight is on here and you can watch it yourself and count.. it’s 14 all day long. At 6 seconds he was still laying flat.. facts
Facts... it was a long count Nevermind the guy outside the ring the count period was a little long I got 11 either way the fight was over I've counted 11 like 20 times just to be sure the 14 was the outside of the ring guys count but the ref was a little behind but not by that much buster was nowhere near getting up at 6 if that was the case there would never have been an issue
BS. Buster was always fine. Your boy was searching for his mouthpiece.
@@TheGr8-1 searching for his mouthpiece bc he’s a true warrior. dude you are hilarious to think that buster is anywhere close to being the fighter Mike was. ive never heard anything more amusing in my life.
@@TheGr8-1 what makes it so bad is Mike sent that boy to the canvas with the laziest upper cut i ever seen💀 Mike wasn’t even trying and knocked him out😂
@@NickPalmer-vj6by if he knocked him out he would have won. He got his ass whooped the entire fight. Got a flash knock down. Then got destroyed with a 4 punch combo that knocked his mouthpiece out his head. And all you have are woulda shoulda coulda. I swear Tyson fanboys are delusional.
Oops did tyson have a long count?? 😂😂😂😂😂
Douglas wanted “ZERO” smoke from Mike in any kind of rematch.
Don King didn't want Tyson to fight a rematch with Douglas.
@@MaccaveliPL yeah course he didn’t, the whole world knew it was one off!!! Douglas first defence proved that, “facts”
@@mattkylie6723 Buster was a one hit wonder. But what a one hit wonder he was. His performance in Tokio was legendary.
@@MaccaveliPL
Shame he couldn’t of maintained it aye!!! as sensational as he was in his entrence!! he was equally as sensational in his 3rd defeat, first defence!!! Good ol buster, fair play to im
We all saw what happened followed by the real buster douglas when he fought Holyfield.
Why was there no rematch
Michael didn't want it, both could have earned mega millions, money talks.
Ask Don King?
