Well, Buster Douglas was good. His record does not seem as good as Mike's, but he was a serious contender with a lot of wins, and not too many losses. When I checked his record, it does not seem to me like an upset, it was just a really good fight for Buster.
@@natepoodle9132He was a big strong guy who could box well. Indeed, no great surprise. One of Douglas's difficulties was possibly motivation to train. Not for that fight, though. Good on the extraordinary Mike Tyson for not making excuses.
@@johnlloyd3224 Interesting point. Even Mike has claimed to not do too much training before a lot of fights (I think he mentions it in this video too).

@@natepoodle9132 Yeah, I agree with the 10-count. A lot of people chalk up Mike's loss to Buster with either the long count or the "he was fucking Japanese hookers while high on coke." The "long" count was 13 seconds, sure, but rules say it's the referee's count that's followed, and even then, Douglas was ready to get up even before the ref got to 5, he just waited until 9 to get some rest. The Tyson not being serious part, that's on him, they love making excuses for their demigod Tyson.
Much respect for Mike, I was surprised he didn’t make some excuses or say negative things about Buster Douglas, he basically just said he was better that night! I was not expecting that, but love his attitude about it!
Don’t worry. His fans have an entire library of excuses for his losses. That and a encyclopedia of imaginary wins that never happened. Saying Mike Tyson was the best heavyweight in the second half of the 80’s isn’t good enough for them. They want to think of him as a Superman who could beat 20 angry gorillas at once with his bare hands, blindfolded!
@dontrah1838 I'm sure Tyson meant Before the Holyfield fight. At the time of the fight Tyson stopped 2 of the 3 people that beat Douglas. The other he didn't fight. Holyfield did butt Tyson, I mean beat Tyson 6 years later. If they fought in 1990 & 91 like they were signed to Tyson beats Holyfield
Can anyone imagine how blessed Mike Tyson is & was as a child? Everything he did. God kept him above Ground for a Reason. The Man is a Beacon of Hope, " pain & long-suffering brings wisdom." Those Inc myself. Are blessed to walk the earth with you. In true time is just Mind-blowing..

23 days before the fight Buster Douglas's mother passed away, he wanted to win for her and there's nothing more powerful then love even Mike Tyson in his prime, he knocked him out with determination and a complete focus on him and nothing else even with the crowd going crazy with the countless punches, Legendary boxer the both of them
And that's the truth. Buster never fought like that before or again in his life. His determination was real. And that's the man that beat Iron Mike. He deserves his credit. I can say this now almost 30 years later. Lol At the time that sh broke my heart. It was like watching Aquaman drown in a bathtub.
Thank you for telling the truth seriously a lot of people keep making excuses for Tyson but at the same time Tyson made excuses for himself like the 13 count he even had a 13 count against himself and didn't acknowledge it he also said he was locked in his room and couldn't leave unless it was for training purposes which sounds professional and honorable but he also said in another video that he was too busy using cocaine and hookers😅
I could listen to Mike all day because he has so much wisdom to offer because he lived it and survived to tell us. His inner tenacity is a tool for life. The obstacles we encounter in life can feel defeating. Yet, listening to Mike explain his battles and the way in which he views those challenges is something to personally practice, because too many people are stripped of that kind of spirit, and we all need a fighter in the heart.
That's what I thought. He doesn't whine and say "I should have won", or make excuses, he says "he beat my ass", and admits he didn't train for it, and that he was hard to coach then.
I remember where I was for that Tyson Douglas fight. I was in the USMC on Okinawa, Camp Foster, and we were all watching that fight in our squad bay. He was my favorite heavy weight back then. Today, he's my favorite of all time.. A 5' 10" Destroyer.
I was also in the Corps stationed at Marine Security Forces, Mare Island, CA. I read about it in the paper in the chow hall the morning after the fight. I was shocked. I was also stationed at Camp Foster. '84-'85. Semper Fi!!!

Fair play for giving Douglas his props. As a boxing fanatic who has watched all of the greats, I truly believe that Douglas could've beaten almost any HW in history on that night. He never showed that level before or after, but on that night he was incredible.
@@seansimms8503Exactly. People get caught up in the optics far too much when it comes to Tyson. A devastating puncher, super quick, hard to hit clean, and brutally efficient --- but styles make fights. And Evander was strong, intelligent, taller, and had acquitted himself well against Dwight Muhammad Quawi, among others. Evander had been legit for years before ever beating Tyson and that match-up nearly got made prior to Tyson going to prison.
I was at a recreation center when my children were young. Buster came in and sat about 10 feet from me. Had to do a double take because I could not believe he was there. Had a pleasant conversation with him. I think he respected the fact that I talk to him just like a good friend. He was very humble.
I'm 56 and grew up near Albany, NY. I watched Mike fight Hector Mercedes in 1985 (I was Senior in H.S.) I knew in my gut that I witnessed something special and followed his career the whole way through. Watched the Douglas fight on TV, not live but over and over again. Mike knocked Douglas to the canvas in the 8th but indeed, Buster fought a better fight. Love Mike and I admire how layered and deep his mind is... Living Legend!!!
Yeah,I won a lot of money from that fight ( I put my money on Douglas ) I thought Tyson would under estimate Buster, which he did. LOL. Buster went all out for his preparation for his fight against Tyson ( Buster was always over-weight for his other fights ) but,for the Tyson fight he was in the best shape/condition he'd ever been in before.Even Buster's own mother told him he couldn't beat Tyson ( then she died before this fight ) nobody but Buster thought he'd beat Tyson and he did.
Another example of why Iron Mike is my champion. Finding out how awesome Buster was is super cool as he really deserved this win. But that uppercut made me physically ill, Mike is my champion and I hated seeing him take that shot. I will never forget it, it’s burned into my memory forever like some kind of nightmare snapshot. Thanks for posting this!!!!
Me too bro, I remember just starring at the tv in complete shock! 😳😳 I even shed a tear not gone front, that was a devastating lost to me at that time.
They interviewed Buster Douglas and he was very confident. "I'm too big and strong for Tyson. I'm 6'4" X 235. He's like 5'10" and 215. Everyone says he's fast. He's not, I'm faster. He gets hit with everything" ... "But you're the biggest underdog in 40 years. Nobody expects you to win" ... "Look, I didn't train and fought like shit a few times, but I've been training hard for over a year. This is a special opportunity that comes once in a lifetime. I will grab it."
I was born in the same month and year as Michael Gerard Tyson, and we share the same first name. He is my favorite boxer of all time, and always will be. Not just because of what a phenom he was in the ring, but because he ALWAYS had more wisdom than anyone expected from a kid who grew up on the streets. From day one he was both humble and cocky, learned yet ever learning. Never met the man, but I always loved him.
"he fought a great fight that night"- Iron Mike, the best of the 80's. I think that's all, simple, honest and wise. He could have found many excuses, the referee etc. Long live Mr. Mike Tyson, a legend.
The official scorecards through 9 rounds were 87-86 Tyson, 86-86, 88-83 for Douglas. If Tyson gets up from the knockdown those judges were definitely trying to figure out a way to get Tyson a win so he fights Holyfield next. Douglas won every second of the fight besides the knockdown but people want to complain about a long count where Buster made eye contact with the ref and took extra time knowing what the count was.
Yeah, other then Tyson's knock down of Douglas, Douglas was dominating the fight. Its actually good Buster got the knock out otherwise the judges might have given Tyson the fight.@@ehrenthompson7891
Tyson actually knocked Buster out in the 9th round. The Ref started the count at one, when the count from the ringside Ref was already at four. Buster was given at least 13 seconds.
Love Mike! The honesty and the personal accountability! “But you don’t know me that well. It’s kinda hard to get me on the right path if I don’t want to be on it.” That’s a man speaking man words and putting the challenges he had on himself and not blaming others. RESPECT. 👊🏾👊🏾👊🏾💯
Tyson has come full circle as a man and finally we can call him a role model. Buster absolutely was the better fighter that night and Tyson made no excuses for his loss. Love to see that! Real champions know they can’t win them all. It’s about overcoming adversity and admitting flaws
@@breal1183Thumbs down! "Actually," Douglas was down for the 8-9 count & got back up when he was supposed to, before the 10th count. Nobody broke Mike down like Buster did. You casual fans don't even know who Buster's father was, let alone why Buster was such a good boxer when he came to fight. It was probably the biggest upset in boxing history, but he doesn't take anything away from Buster Douglas. He just says he fought a great fight that night. No excuses. Respect.
Douglas was incredible that night. People gloss over the fact that he was fundamentally a very talented boxer and a big man. His jab was fast and had real snap. His punches flowed and he moved very well. Conditioning was always his biggest weakness.
His jab was lazy. Tyson didn't train and was unprepared. Give Buster credit though. He lost his Mom 3 weeks earlier and fought the fight of his life. The Buster Douglas that fought Holyfield is who he really was
@@mongoslade277 He was lazy in general. It was his biggest shortcoming. The Buster Douglas that fought Holyfield was one of the worst versions of himself. I think the fight with Tony Tucker is probably a more accurate summation of Buster Douglas. His jab was hard enough to drop heavyweights. I don't doubt that Tyson was undertrained, but he did train. He wouldn't have taken a beating for 10 rounds if he hadn't. Anyway, regarding Douglas, his performance against Tyson was nothing less than skilled, tough, smart, and ruthless. He put it all together that night and no one will ever be able to take that away from him.
@jamescook4116 Your right. Absolutely right. Not as great as he looked in the Tyson fight. Not as bad as he looked against Holyfield. I remember that Tony Tucker fight. Buster Douglas was looking real sharp. He had him then stopped fighting. Was winning that fight late then he got stopped out of nowhere. You called it right
@@mongoslade277 Thanks. Your recollections are dead on. He looked so good early on against Tucker. Then his lack of conditioning showed up. He basically just ran out of gas and stopped. His dad was a fighter and pushed Douglas into the sport. My guess is that he never would have been a boxer had he not been forced into it. I think his general lack of commitment reflects that. His overall talent was considerable.
I love how Mike said that loss to Buster was one of his best because it woke up him on a path to redemption and to never underestimate his opponent ever again. A story of life, for real
Yep, a damn good, wise perspective. And credit given too. I KNOW Mike could have said truthfully he didnt take Douglas too seriously, while Douglas took this as the fight of his life, and meant it truthfully. But, he didnt take that road, and thats good. He aint kidding too: Douglas never fought as good before, or ever again after as he did that night. Accuracy, defense, not giving up WHEN he was pasted with bombs, and on the fly, accurate switch hitting. Douglas that night might have beaten almost anyone. And he deserves credit for his efforts. Had he come in less prepared, Tyson would have stopped him too.
I like how honest he was at the end when Joe said if someone could have reached him and said "Yo what we doing here" and get Mike back on track. "You dont know me that well and i would have got on a plane and been out of here if someone said that" . Thats some honesty for yo arse right there.
Mike can’t admit he fought poorly, wasn’t prepared and that was definitely not one of his best fights. At least he admitted he got his ass handed to him.
Ok, so here's the fistic deal. Poor Mr. Douglas' beloved MOTHER had died the day before this immortal fight. No man on Earth was going to beat him that night. Listen to his tearful post-fight interview in the ring: he was a man on a holy, familial mission. And, by the same token, Mr. Tyson is right in calling this fight his finest hour. Not only did he 'take' Mr. Douglas' best 'shots,' he landed a MAGNIFICENT right uppercut of his own, from which the former arose on the strength of finial piety alone. Bravo to both Champions. And God bless 🇺🇸 . Robert Allen
Watching in Wales 🏴 UK…We love and respect Mike Tyson, what an Explosive Fighter, definitely one of Greatest absolutely NO QUESTION. Respect to you Mike 🙏
i remember watching the Buster Douglas fight live as it happened, i remember being in total disbelief when Tyson was KO'd, thinking did this just happen? it was impossible for him to lose a fight especially to Buster Douglas, it just goes to show anything can happen in the ring!
Very gracious towards Buster Douglas. Mike doesn't diminish his accomplishment at all. It's great to see how he has evolved into the elder statesman given how emotionally unstable he seemed to be as a young man.
I freaking love Tyson and his honesty about himself. That's why he has and will continue to become a better man, and more and more of a legend. Much respect to Iron Mike!!!!
0:28 That neck is the reason Mike does not appear to have experienced much, if any, brain damage from boxing. A neck that strong stabilizes the head so that the brain is better protected from bumping around in the skull too much.
Weirdly enough, this also explains why F1 Drivers can go from 150 to 0 in less than a second & walk away without a concussion. The constant strain against the G forces they endure build their necks & upper body into pure muscle
Great to see Mike give credit to Buster. Buster was great that night, at the pinnacle of his abilities and he fought with great heart and desire. Unfortunately, we would never see that Buster again. That whole spiel about Mike not training is part BS, part truth. Obviously, he trained - his body was ripped. I just don't think he was at his peak mentally, whether through overconfidence or other distractions. That said, he was a truly unique spirit and a great addition to the legend of boxing and it's great when he is thoughtful and puts things in perspective.

Mike Tyson is not only my favorite fighters in the ring, but also in life. It's not in just the ring he fights so well, but in the path of becoming a wonderful man. I backed Douglas to win. He represented the great Ohio boxing community. In college he was selected 2 years in a row for the US basketball team. That is an elite athlete......it is the reason why he was hard to beat. The odds were wrong. The family thought he had a good chance of winning.

It's true but Mike also did not fight his fight at all that night either..
Buster beat him fair and square
Tyson lost because he didn't prepare properly. Many fighters lose loved ones, but it doesn't help really.

Fair play for giving Douglas his props. As a boxing fanatic who has watched all of the greats, I truly believe that Douglas could've beaten almost any HW in history on that night. He never showed that level before or after, but on that night he was incredible.

Evander had been legit for years before ever beating Tyson and that match-up nearly got made prior to Tyson going to prison.
I was at a recreation center when my children were young. Buster came in and sat about 10 feet from me. Had to do a double take because I could not believe he was there.
