I think architecture schools can be a terrible way to kill some artists inspiration because you’re learning to draw in a more technical and industrial way, so if you’ve been to architecture I can understand what you feel. I graduated 6 years ago and never worked in this field but today I’m still struggling with thoses « rules of drawing » I learned through architecture. Look at your art journey as if you were a 10 yo. It heals slowly, i can tell. Hope you’ll find your creativity again 😘
Life is hard isn't it? Here are the things that helped me as an artist. 1) My wife is also an artist and she is very encouraging. We even paint commission together 2) I'm a Math teacher but found a job as an art teacher in the Philippines. I taught art to grades 1 through 5 for 3 years. Being surrounded by free art materials and having to teach it to kids, I learned how to paint with acrylics, tempera, watercolor, etc. Before this job I mostly drew and created small clay sculptures. 3) Do it for fun. I also wish I could do art full-time and get paid to create it. Most of the time I don't get paid but I still do it because it is fun. It wasn't fun for maybe 2 or 4 years but eventually I became skillful enough that I know 90% of the time I will get good results. 4) Finally, make sure you exercise because I have so many body pains from seating for hours at a time and I could have avoided much suffering if I had an exercise routine. Good luck and remember that art is a treasure, not always a business.
I started painting after nearly 25/28 years. I started to paint to keep my sanity because I lost my parents within 23 days of each other's death. It was traumatic and I needed help and art helped me rediscover myself and manage my emotions. Just make a start dont think is all I have to say. People will always have something to say, art is very personal and very soul searching. If you dont know what to say, pick a brush and it will soon come out.
I started oil painting when I was 60 years old. My first motivation was that I wanted paint Mt. Fuji in the bath room. I initially found Russian artist on RUclips because his oil paint style was somehow impression style which I like Mone,Goho , etc. Sometime I stopped by some oil paint stores in Boston while I was visiting Boston on business. My best friend of German friend truly encourage my art works and thanks to him I continue to paint. I was very much good at painting when I was elementary school. Oh by the way, I found an interesting point. Color recognition difference between Asian and European especially orange and yellow colors. Probably it may come from eye ball color difference. For Asian those color recognizes somehow dark but European more vivid.

Thank you for all of your answers and thank you to all the people who sent you questions! So incredibly happy they helped you! Everyone asked so many great questions, so I tried to answer the ones I wish someone would’ve talked about when I was looking be a full time artist. Thank you for your kind comments Lina 🥰💖
An art degree gives one knowledge but it doesn’t give a person raw talent. I was born with pencil in my hand, often thought about art school when l was young, but soon realised that talent can’t be taught, only honed. It’s encouraging to watch videos like yours, thank you 😊
I agree that most art schools aren't worth it.But it has nothing to do with talent. Art is not a talent it's a skill. Talent might play a role in how fast you learn something but it's less than 5% of what makes you an artist. There are professional artists who had no talent, in fact most of the best artists ever learned it through sheer hard work and repetition. Anybody can learn art. People are born with different levels of passion for art but not different levels of skill. Their passion makes them work on it more, gaining more mileage than the average person at a young age. You can learn art at any age . Jonathan Hardesty started learning art at the age of 22 and now he is teaching at Schoolism because of the amount of effort he put into it. Marco Bucci(One of her favourite artists she has mentioned in this video) has a video where he talks about how he became a successful artist even though he had no talent. Marc Brunet and Samdoesarts also talk about it in the videos about 'worst art advices'. Ironically, artists who see themselves as 'talented' instead of hardworking come to a point where they hit a wall. Everything is learned through repetition. You can check out the book 'The Talent Code: Greatness isn't Born it's Grown' by Daniel Coyle. You can be a phenomenal artist even if you have zero talent. All you need is repetition. In terms of learning art, online courses like Proko, Schoolism, New Masters Academy etc and online schools like CGMA, CG Spectrum are the best to learn art. Also youtube tutorials. These are way cheaper options which no generation before us had access to :D
remembering that your art needs to make *income* as a *business* is something people three times your age forget/struggle with: you are extremely self-aware. cheers!
Thank you so much Ashleigh! I admire how you make your amazing videos. This vlog really answered a lot of questions how you do your stuff and all your advices on how to be a full time artist truly make sense. It's nice to know that you're proud to have Asian descent with Chinese-Filipino culture upbringings. God bless & keep being an Artist!
Ashleigh, I have been attending fine art classes at the Denver arts league and have had a wonderfully helpful learning experiences. My teacher(Jane Jones-Arvada Co.) an amazing oil painter said she learned very little about making art in ART school. She holds a masters degree in fine art. We had another fellow student who just finished her masters in fine art state she learned nothing about making art in school. She learned more in four intro classes with mrs Jones than all her art classes. I’m working on my art everyday while watcher videos like yours. This so much. Over the years travel abroad and study master artists is so inspiring. My favorite is Van Gogh, Raphael, and the impressionist movement. All the best to you.
I haven’t watched the other people you mentioned, but I’m going to second the recommendation of Ian Roberts. He breaks things down in a way that I’ve never heard other people frame them, and I find his teaching so simple yet effective. He conveys the foundations so well without overwhelming you as the viewer. Highly recommend his channel for any kind of artist, not just oil painters.
Hi Ashleigh! I’m from the Philippines and ive been a fan of your artwork. I also wanted to pursue arts and i hope to be a full time artist soon. Thank you for your advices and your story is an inspiration. I’m a full self taught artist. Just by watching youtube, i really learned a lot and still a lot to learn more. Thank you, Ashleigh! ❤️
I love the fact that you want to be honest with us and share your art journey. I have learned something and I am inspired by you, your videos, and your art. Also, I am proud of you, even though we do not know each other, however, I want to support your journey as another artist who too self-taught and want to start an art journey again. Thank you for posting your video and have an awesome day.
Hello Ashleigh, there are a number of books available for beginners available in most book shops, also a good place to start researching how to paint in oils, acrylics or watercolours or pastels and sketching etc, can be found in Amazon's book store online.
Ashleigh, you are young, talented and most of important thing is you are so in love with art, so keep trying and be happy because there is no answer for art and it is just between the artist, you and people who feel and interpret your art. Have a good day! 😉
Why am i crying. 🥲 your voice is so soothing and i needed those words. 🥺 omg you came from phil but you are chinese but you actually look like a Filipino!. Nice!.
I found your channel recently, and inspired by you, I restarted my watercolor painting journey. It is so hard to keep it up, but when I do, I feel so much more peace inside of me, and it adds such an aesthetic layer to my life. Enjoyed watching all your videos 😊
I really like what you're doing and the way you approach your art and this channel. So I try to like and comment every video to support and spread a little positivity because social media can be a mean and toxic place. Even though I think your community is very lovely and a special place among RUclips channels.
Degrees are great but I dropped out of college. Built and grew into a sales career with a global manufacture where I’ve passed over in management rolls but they keep coming back to me for ideas, thoughts etc. All good, I out work them and just took home a major industry spotlight award . None of which my managers with degrees can say have
You have a best supporting partner! It’s very rare when a person sacrifices just to make you happy ❤ I have a same situation with my partner. He’s been supporting me for last two years so I can do what I love but I often feel bad and I hope one day I can make a big contribution to our life!
Great video. Very insightful. You're not presenting yourself as the wisened sage as much as a fellow student on the same journey . . . just a little farther ahead and showing the way. That just makes your videos that much more appealing. Also, seriously, I salute Brett. 👏👏👏👏Moral support from family and friends is great and all, but having a partner willing to wade in and help mitigate some of the financial burden all new artists (and some seasoned ones) face is above and beyond. You the Man!!! Another great video Ashleigh. AWESOME as always!!!👏👏👏👏
Thanks for sharing. I am a newbie, who wasn't interested due to a lot of reasons. Now I have started to learn and am enjoying it. I follow lessons and workshops. God bless.
You are extremely talented, especially because you are mostly self taught...ignore others! I didn't do art in school. I am also self taught and didn't think my art was any good until others saw it and wanted to buy it as gifts for others. Your process is really good and if you ever decide to do a tutorial without having to explain what you are doing just like what you did today where the process of you painting start to finish is sufficient👍🏽
Sales and good are not the same thing and good art. Sadly, people will buy anything. They know less than you. Don’t fool yourself. A good teacher will open your eyes and make your learning easier and shorter. I am tired of people saying they are self taught and are professional artists. You don’t know what you don’t know.
I adored art school but had a show with a friend who hated it but has done so well and become very celebrated since leaving school and doing things his own way. It can be wonderful if you are open to the experience but is definitely not necessary. We were taught to be pretty much self directed and you can do that on your own - and I guess many schools are different. I’m learning every day out of school too. School was just a fun part of my journey but there are so many other ways. Some of the most successful business people never went to business school and that’s something art school doesn’t teach. The most self directed students will figure it out one way or another. The key is to follow your bliss and the money will always follow. If you believe your work will sell beautifully it does. Can you believe I’m a big believer in the law if of attraction? It turned out to be very true for me. I was lucky and never needed a part time job but the universe has a way of lining things up when you believe and expect things to work out. There’s nothing wrong with doing other things though. 💖
I had a chance to watch this one again 😊, this time paying closer attention to your water color interpretation of that beautiful building. It was so interesting seeing it take shape from a simple sketch to its beautiful final form. I loved the way the somewhat lose and purposefully inexact window and door frames worked so well in finished piece. I began to see how those strokes were not the product of a rushed or carefree effort, but rather a developed skill necessary for the impressionist style. A style that you seem to enjoy, and one that I am growing more fond of through your influence. Thanks again for putting out such great content.
Beautiful video and very informative. You are such a peaceful person and have a wonderful personality. You nailed that painting with those loose strokes and your inspiration of impressionistic art by your mentioned favourite artists comes across beautifully. At first I was doubtful about how it would end but glad to say I was in for an amazing surprise. Looking forward to more. 💜
I really appreciate you saying that! I’m glad to know my goals towards looser brushstrokes are getting closer. I feel like that every time I paint haha 😅 thank you 🤍
I've avoided social media for years because I feel happier when I stay more private. But I am willing to give that up to make a career in art. This summer - after I graduate - I'm going to give RUclips and social media a serious try.
Everything in this clip is very relaxing and enjoyable. I love your mindset about art careers and the way you try to give answers with honest opinions. Great job! I subscribed to your channel already 😃
This was really interesting! I have a channel sharing my journey as a full time artist, since I quit my job in banking a year ago. I share everything I'm doing and learning along the way, with lots of advice for beginners, and painting tutorials too! You're an inspiration Ashleigh!
It's all depend how you looks at it. People who make a lot of money in fine art may not necessarily the artist themselves. Collectors & agents took most of the money. Publicity mostly done by the galleries. Good artists are too busy at works. Changing hands makes the values goes up.

Hello there...I first started out with oils and painting florals. I started out taking floral art classes at Michael's from a gal who studied from a teacher who was connected with Bob Ross. The teacher's style was wet on wet. I took week long classes and in that class I heard about the artist who taught my teacher his style of painting in oils. His name is Gary Jenkins and he had been painting for years. I took many week long classes with him. I then got interested in the Thomas Kincaid style of painting landscapes. I loved those cottages he painted with flowers everywhere. I taught myself by studying his style and his colors he chose. I also bought DVD tutorials from another artist but he painted landscapes in acrylics. That did not stop me. He had a lot to teach in his dvds and books. I just painted what he painted in oils. His name is Jerry Yarnell. I found him on the internet. There is also an artist named Dorothy Dent who paints in oils. She has plenty of books out with instructions as well as tracings of what you are going to paint which are pullouts. She also has dvds of landscape tutorial paintings which are really pretty. She loves painting barns, covered bridges, farm like homes, or woods with paths. I have always thought flowers looked pretty in watercolor. I bought books on watercolor, books with drawings on watercolor paper. Then I stumbled across two artist who paint botanical florals in watercolor via Patreon. I also like watercolor because the brushes are easier to clean. It took forever to clean my oil brushes. Plus there are no fumes in watercolor. Anyway, you might want to check out those artists who paint in oils and have books/tutorials with pullouts that I mentioned. I do hope this helps.

me : working in an artstore in germany "How much you spent on art material?" Overall.I meet artists every day😘 and I can give you some simple advise "grab the mediumHigh priced stuff. It will pay off in the end."Especially in paints and papers. High-priced paints are most of the time just medium and pigment..a high amount of pigment. While cheap variants are mixed with multiple stuff and fewer pigments. Being a beginner I'd advise people to buy the basic colors of well-established brands than the cheap variant of a no-name company. Simply turn the product around and read what is in it. You will see the difference right away!Plus: if buying a small selection of paints you learn to mix !🥰nice video and good luck
@@AshleighKing Absolutely! May I give you a lil TIP for a nice brand whose quality is really amazing? The German brand Schminke : especially the Norma oil colors are Awesome! They have also for students the 'akademie'quality which is already stunning!

Keep it up! Create your styles the one that will instill in the minds of all people, something original and weird or different from the conventional... start with the basic water color, acrylic then oil, master it all, so in the future you can decide which medium you will use as you like to do, experiment also in your concepts, just paint, paint, paint in your own way! Dont mind the other what they say, atleast you are happy and in a positive way creating your masterpieces! Goodluck! 🙏🇵🇭🤙

Hi I'm from England! Loved your Watercolour. I haven't used watercolours in years. I stayed on in school til 18, studied Graphic Design but I do love drawing. Never really did anything with it workwise. I did sell one of my drawings on ebay, although not for much but its a start. For many years I've been moving from temporary job to temporary job but never really settling anywhere except for my last job where I was for 3.5 years. I loved it there but then COVID messed that up and I was unemployed for a while. But I've been looking into side hustles as a way to make extra money. I do a little bit of ebay reselling and have been trying to sell some of my work on there. I think its great you go out to paint/draw. I actually prefer to use photos as reference. I don't know if you find this but drawing and painting can be quite therapeutic. When you're really focused on something its like meditation. Keep up the good work!
I really enjoyed this! I'm just starting with RUclips and your tips, especially about the mental advice help a lot! Thank you so much for sharing this Ashleigh!

I love these things and enjoy watching them. From the bottom of my heart, I follow you from the Middle East, Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, I love you so much💖💖
Thanks for your honesty. I'm a digital artist who does this for a living. But I'm not a popular on social media. It's ok for me, because it doesn't affect my demand among clients/studios
I just found your channel and I’m very glad I did. You are so well spoken and are multi talented. You are also very smart. You are a very easy person to watch with your art work and it is spectacular. I can’t wait to see more of your videos.

💐💐
May I see your paintings ...?
Thankyou so much for sharing this! As an Industrial Engineering final-year student who has always been dreaming to be a fashion designer since childhood, I found this video is very comforting to me. I always think that it's such a shame if I need to do an unrelated full-time or part-time job after graduate to provide my fashion career, but because of your video, I feel a little bit more relieved. Gonna support you as much as I can, love you Ashleigh!
I always look forward to Ashleigh’s calm and relaxing videos. You are doing a great job with the quality of videos you produce. This is exceptional ❤️
I appreciate that so much Nelle! Thank you 💖

I also wanna start my carrier in film direction but due to wrong decision I have to take business studies as my major I decided to start my film carrier by joining film school your art journey really inspired me a lot thank you so much for inspiring me and the world
So happy to hear you’re continuing your art journey! It’s never too late
Thank you for all of your answers and thank you to all the people who sent you questions!
Especially the financial, anxiety and social media parts needs to be talked about because I know a lot artists, including myself, who are still figuring out their individual balances and possabilities to make everything work.
You are a wonderful and inspiring artist Ashleigh!
These are way cheaper options which no generation before us had access to :D
remembering that your art needs to make *income* as a *business* is something people three times your age forget/struggle with: you are extremely self-aware.
cheers!
It’s definitely not an easy thing! But I hope I can keep it in mind as time goes on. Thank you!
Я тоже художник самоучка и прохожу тот же самый путь, здорово знать, что ты такой не один ✨ успехов вам автор🙂
Your hard work has definitely payed off!! You have some amazing skills! And that is a lovely painting!! Your loose brushstrokes are GOALS.
I really appreciate you saying so! So happy I’ve been able to get some consistent practice in 😊
Thank you so much Ashleigh!
So happy it was helpful! Yes very proud of my Asian descent 😊 I appreciate your kind comments!
Every blog of yours is a dream for me. I hope to experience life outside the home freely...love you 💜
Much love! Wishing you the best 🥰
Absolutely!
Hello! I’m so happy it has helped you 🥰 wishing you the best with your art journey, you can do it! Salamat 💖
Books can be found in bookstores? Who would have guest.
High school sweethearts yaasss!
Ashleigh, you are young, talented and most of important thing is you are so in love with art, so keep trying and be happy because there is no answer for art and it is just between the artist, you and people who feel and interpret your art. Have a good day! 😉
Thank you so much for the encouragement 💖 have an amazing week!
Why am i crying. 🥲 your voice is so soothing and i needed those words. 🥺 omg you came from phil but you are chinese but you actually look like a Filipino!. Nice!.
Aw thank you 🥺💖
watching you painting in watercolors with free hand relaxed me so much even here in Syria we have a lot to struggle about thank u so much
I found your channel recently, and inspired by you, I restarted my watercolor painting journey. It is so hard to keep it up, but when I do, I feel so much more peace inside of me, and it adds such an aesthetic layer to my life. Enjoyed watching all your videos 😊
💐
after 8 years my hands missed all the lines and curves with colors and papers ..thanks a lot ashleigh. you inspired me to draw again and be an artist.
I really like what you're doing and the way you approach your art and this channel. So I try to like and comment every video to support and spread a little positivity because social media can be a mean and toxic place. Even though I think your community is very lovely and a special place among RUclips channels.
That’s incredibly kind! I really appreciate you ☺️
this felt like such a thoughtful, relaxed, face2face chat with you---knowing about your journey!
It’s very rare when a person sacrifices just to make you happy ❤
I have a same situation with my partner.
So happy to hear that! I always appreciate your kind comments! I am very lucky and thankful to have his support 😊 have a great week!
Always refreshing to see a fellow lefty artist!
Thanks for sharing.
I am a newbie, who wasn't interested due to a lot of reasons.
Now I have started to learn and am enjoying it.
I follow lessons and workshops. God bless.
So happy to hear that Joyce! Wishing you the best 😊
Instead your beauty, the way you talk made me feel so calm. Keep up the goodwork.
This summer - after I graduate - I'm going to give RUclips and social media a serious try.
left-handed painter, yay!
Everything in this clip is very relaxing and enjoyable. I love your mindset about art careers and the way you try to give answers with honest opinions. Great job! I subscribed to your channel already 😃
Amazing just to hear your soft voice and the delicate you’re a painting keep going, “talent with out hard work is nothing “ remember that good job .
@Ashleigh King, you and your works are just wonderful! It evokes serenity. Lots of love! 💕
This was really interesting! I have a channel sharing my journey as a full time artist, since I quit my job in banking a year ago. I share everything I'm doing and learning along the way, with lots of advice for beginners, and painting tutorials too! You're an inspiration Ashleigh!
The people who make the most money in "fine art" are not so good at "fine art." They are just very good at publicity.
And super luck😎
Or have no money like me 🙈😂😂
You are absolutely correct.
That's why its called "industry"
Or someone to take care of you and worry about the bills while you freely do art .
It's all depend how you looks at it. People who make a lot of money in fine art may not necessarily the artist themselves. Collectors & agents took most of the money. Publicity mostly done by the galleries. Good artists are too busy at works. Changing hands makes the values goes up.
Wow tu acuarela me dio la sensación de que era un reflejo en el agua, muy genial!
Thank you for sharing your time and your life , you doing a beautiful job. Very smart young woman. God bless you always. I will be praying for you.
Je viens, juste, de voir votre vidéo et je suis admirative par votre parcours. Quel courage, quelle détermination, quelle patience. Vraiment on reste vivant quand on a une passion. C'est ça qui vous porte. J'adore vos peintures. Je vous regarde du Sud de la France. I have just seen your video and I am in awe of your journey. What courage, what determination, what patience. Really we stay alive when we have a passion. That's what carries you. I love your paintings.I'm looking at you from South of France.
I really like how detailed your watercolor painting is of that building. Helpful to see how you juxtaposed the brick color with the cool grey accents. I appreciate you explaining your art journey, and your family ancestry. A neat combination of nationalities!
You are amazing Ashleigh, I am following you since you have 2 videos on your channel and I am happy to see that you are growing as an artist day by day and you are allowing your learning process to share with everyone that's what I love about you and your channel.
I always feel good after watching your vlogs and it helps me keep going in my journey as well.

Hello Ashleigh, you are so BEAUTIFUL and thank you for sharing!! I'm SO late in the game as far as wanting to become an Artist because I've fought "perfectionism & fear of failure" for years!! I'm 58 now and to me, age is just a number but, this year I've really wanted to know how can I incorporate learning Art into my college course schedule as well as, family/personal obligations? "How much you spent on art material?"
Overall.I meet artists every day😘 and I can give you some simple advise "grab the mediumHigh priced stuff.
Such great advice! I recently upgraded my oil paints to artist versions and the quality is so worth it 😊
@@AshleighKing Absolutely! May I give you a lil TIP for a nice brand whose quality is really amazing? The German brand Schminke : especially the Norma oil colors are Awesome! They have also for students the 'akademie'quality which is already stunning!

Thank you, Ashleigh❤️🙏✨ for sharing your insights and talent on becoming an artist. You have clearly arrived in being clear about your boundaries and being gentle with yourself by maintaining realistic expectations. KUDOS!❤🎉
At 73, art and design continue to define my life with moments of inspiration pushing me to explore and push the boundaries of my potential. The greatest challenge continues to be pricing my work to sell. You have to have confidence in the worth of your work and know your audience is happy to pay the price you are asking. The internet has certainly made selling your art easier than ever via social media. Like you shared, you simply must be willing to put yourself out there! Here goes!!!❤😂🎉
STAY AWESTRUCK!❤️✨

This video was so relaxing and inspiring! Thank you for sharing with us!!! 💕
Glad you enjoyed it!
Goodluck! 🙏🇵🇭🤙
Me too have no art degree .i am also an artist . following your art .keep it up ♡

Thank you for this advice :) We pour so much effort to make an amazing artwork ..I hope someday I can be successful too :)
I really enjoyed this! I'm just starting with RUclips and your tips, especially about the mental advice help a lot! Thank you so much for sharing this Ashleigh!

That's why I'm practicing digital art, it's hard because i always using my finger. The good thing in digital is free and unlimited colors and many brush.
