I AM a financial and tax expert and you did an EXCELLENT job explaining business, taxes, and finance. You gave some of the same advice I give new business owners. Great job! 👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽 The ONLY thing I would add is to set aside money once a year to hire a CPA for tax PLANNING. All good CPAs always pay for themselves.

_"All good CPAs always pay for themselves."_ - can confirm. Hire a CPA to do your taxes. Always. You're not saving money by doing it yourself. And it's tax deductible (in most places).

CPA not useful at certain revenue streams. 250K and under, a CPA is not needed. If one can do their own taxes, it means they are not dealing with multiple structures in their business.

Small tip that I learned from another RUclipsr (Caroline Winkler). As someone who struggles with ADHD and Executive Dysfunction, it's really hard to motivate myself to do things, even if I really WANT to do them. Her advice has really helped me a lot, even in a state of panic and anxiety.
Ask yourself: Can I physically do this one task?
If the answer is yes, it takes all the emotional turmoil out of the equation for me. I take literally each step I need to do at a time at face value. If it is a physical thing I can do, I focus on it until the next step and it just rolls one into the other until I have a whole video on RUclips out for everyone to see.
May not work for everyone, but breaking it down instead of trying to categorize everything I need to do all at once and having a mental breakdown really helps with my own abilities and I'm hoping the same advice can help anyone reading this, too :3

      @cableknitter7346 12 дней назад

You think they're asking you "Why do you want *A* job?" but that's not what they want to know.
They're asking you "Why do you think our company should hire YOU to work for THIS COMPANY instead of the 300 other people who are asking us to hire THEM?"
So if you want them to look at YOU as more worthy of the job than those OTHER applicants, your answer needs to be specific about why you feel THEY ARE A WORTHY COMPANY FOR YOU to work for, and how you feel hiring you will BENEFIT THEM.
So, yeah.. that question is never really all about YOU. It's a "What do you know and think about US?" question.
So a little RESEARCH about either that specific company, or that boss, or that department, or that technology.. whatever it is THEY DO.. is what you need do in order to let them hear you tell them about THEM, and how you think you can fit in and contribute to whatever it is they're about.

I'm glad to hear you say _"trying to work on myself to not let my fear of failure or imperfection keep me from even trying to do stuff"._ I relate so so much to this and it has been my problem. FEAR has kept me from getting stuff accomplished for the past 10 years of my life (15 years, if i'm being honest) and I have HUGE regrets. This may sound cliché (an I thought it was when I was younger), but
      1) *try early and fail early*
      2) *stay close to friens/family who'll understand you.*
      3) *...and don't let people's opinions of you hinder you...even family.*
      4) *One that I still struggle with: "learn to say no". (It can be done respectfully).*
Over those 10-15 years, I thought my parents and others wouldn't take me seriously with the things i wanted (and still want) to do, so I never voiced my wants or dreams. Then a few months ago, I mentioned this to one of my parents, and the response was "why didn't you say anything then. I think it's a great idea." 😕 Welp...I almost broke down in tears at that statement. I've cried over the years from the fear, and then the regret, and the latter is much worse than the first.
Anyway. I didn't mean to rant. I wish you the best encouragement and success in whatever it is you plan to do. 🙂👍

You are right that the regret is at least as bad if not worse than the fear. I regret not making use of my younger years when I had fewer daily responsibilities and more time. But I’m also at the same time now slowly working on my anxiety and trying to have a more positive, less fear-based outlook on life. This was so inspiring. I have been very unhappy with my 9-5 Job lately. Last year I even had a burnout. Looking for new career paths has been really frustrating because I feel I don't quite "fit" anywhere. That because I am the mentally ill, but artsy person, all of those office jobs just are not for me. Some time ago I played with the thought of running an etsy shop with my art, and started making a concept. But I just keep putting it down again and again because I keep thinking that I wouldn't make it as an artist. That I don't have the discipline it takes.
Watching your video made me realize that it's possible for an "Uncomfy" person to do something great with their career, and be successful. So I think I will keep thinking of some products, collecting information on supplies and how to properly run a business. Once I got everything laid out, I will launch my shop as a side business. Keeping my 9-5 for a while, and just see how my shop develops. Maybe it will stay a hobby, maybe it will be a success. Who knows. But I really need to try or I will regret it for the rest of my life

If I may add my two bits worth on the matter: on most of the businesses it’s not what you sell but how; you’re selling a story, a persona, a message, a moral, the atmosphere, character of the artist (or whatever that may be, and so on and so forth), more than a material product.
And that’s why customer awareness and such is generated through marketing and sharing and not through the product selling itself. That said, warmest congratulations on your business and achievements.

I was not expecting to cry, but that part where you were mentioning love and your parents was so sweet. Im glad you were able to get that reassurance. I feel like a lot of us feel that way be it money or just achievements in general.
I love that you had the love of art in common with family you didnt even know about. That is such a cool thing to find out and bond over. My family likes art but noone pursues it. I think out of the main ppl in my family only 4 out of 18 including myself practice it on a regular basis. I think I am the only one who wants to pursue it as a living of some sort.

People will love you for who you are or they don’t really love you, but what you do for them. It sounds like you have learned that. I hope that your heart has learned it, too. Please remember to take care of yourself and find time every week to do something just for yourself, even if it is taking a walk in nature. If I remember correct, they said you need to understand business and how to sell and put your art out there in stores in a nice presentable way so it draws more people in to buy. I just wanted to say that feeling young and branching out can feel scary, but please believe that time goes by very quickly- and there are many of us now in our 40’s who are no wiser than we were in our 20’s about a LOT of things. At the end of the day, it’s about what you are willing to in invest in YOURSELF. No gatekeeping with age, or gender, or economical background. Your reality starts with your openness to learning new things. Be brave, walk alone when you have to, but it will pay you back, this ability to buck family or community trends, and don’t be afraid to fail up. Don’t be fooled by appearances on the internet. Don’t compare yourself to others. No one can do what you do, the way YOU do it. Good luck. I believe in you!

I hope you got the chance to take notes from her video, she had great tips that you can apply to most small businesses that are starting up and/or having a difficult time.
She is strategically saving money by splitting rent with housemates (and prob her partner too), and does not have car and car insurance payments and gas or maintenance bills.
We each have to learn the hard way, as every small business is different, especially for artists like us, but it IS doable!
She is so correct that you have to learn from everywhere, do your research, and I strongly suggest a separate bank checking account AND at least for the first year (and BEFORE you start), make an appointment with a CPA who can learn about your business, and tell them about what platforms you want to sell on, and they can give you professional advice how how to make better choices that will save you money in the long run.
Like what expenses you can deduct off of your taxes, as a small business owner, etc.
What things you must save, such as receipts, etc.
Ugh. Lots of work that is non-art. But it still beats working a job you may not like and wishing you were not too tired to follow your art passion when you get home.

Something that ALWAYS gets missed in these "how I make X$ a month as a..." videos is "I had a huge amount of luck".
BARE IN MIND, that doesn't devalue what you have done IN ANY WAY. It is flatout impossible to get to where you have gotten from without a lot of talent and a LOT of hard work.
HOWEVER, there will be countless people who have talent, and who have worked hard, but without enough luck it simply doesn't work out.
So for those of you who have tried and feel like you aren't making it, there's a more than likely chance that it isn't your fault AT ALL. You just weren't in the right place at the right time, not yet at least.
Congrats Uncomfy on your success, best of luck to those of you who haven't gotten there yet.

Hi, photographer here. You don't need the biggest or expensive camera to get amazing depth of field or excellent video quality. I used to use a Canon M50; super affordable for like $500 without a kit lens and got a pancake lens (20mm f2) and this combo is already an excellent vlogging setup. Big cameras don't give amazing depth of field; that is due in to the lens you get.
If you are using the 18-35mm lens, that is most likely the kit lens that came with the camera and is known as a variable lens; meaning when you zoom, you lose light/depth of field. Recommend if you wanna start filming shallow DOF videos, invest in a good prime lens!

I do have another job lined up but I want to be able to eventually have my own full time business. thank you so much, love, I greatly appreciate it!

I am in love with this video! It came at the perfect moment for me. I am an artist. I've spent most of my time writing, creating and then started painting too. Naturally, I've had all these points of focus in my sphere - the business aspect, finances, sharing content and I feel that this video just perfectly encapsulates where I am now - sort of a really grounded place to focus from that connects with my journey. Thank you for sharing! ❤

I love how people would see you as a person coming from a "Diversity" Background, but you really work hard and do your best to get through.
And its with a lot of success. It isnt always luck, and being "privileged" or something. You are the living proof that you can do the work and succeed. I like your mentality a lot!!

You gave us transparency behind taxes, finances, and a realistic behind the scenes of what it takes to run a small business. Definitely opened up a lot of conversation in the comments and I’ve been reading all of them. Thank you! 💖

I'm glad you're able to financially support yourself so well!! I think it can take a lot of strength to jump into creating art as a job. It's a weird feeling for me since I'm still in college (for a different field to support my art pursuits) to see others with that sort of willpower.
I think it's really something to look up to, especially since I kind of chicken out of doing any major projects with my art haha. Anyways, I hope you continue to find joy in your pursuits :D!!

Gold info right here. I teach at a university right now and I'm absolutely pushing this video on my students. I try to explain these things adjacently and occasionally in the context of making art for a living... but I'd love to be able to throw this exact info right at them. I teach art for games/entertainment and it's absolutely a terror of a career path. Passing on this info may help these kids create a back-up plan while they pursue those long term goals.
    Thanks a bunch!

Great video for sharing your experience and knowledge. As a graphic designer, one thing I wish I know when I was younger is to invest the money I made. Don't forget to invest with all the money you are making! As you get older you want your money to work for you and doing your craft will be come your hobby. At 60, you don't want to be slaving away so you can pay rent.

@@ittetsutakeda67 Investing involves things like owning rental properties, putting money into a local businesses as an active or passive partner, putting money into a 401k/IRA, or putting money in the stock market.
To Expand a little if you want to know more:
Stocks and retirement plans are the most common types of investing. A lot of people online try to push others into figuring out how to trade stocks/start a retirement plan on their own, but, IMO, paying a little extra to have an advisor is well worth it. It's usually not too big of an expense in comparison to what you will earn and saves you a lot of stress from watching your accounts too frequently and trying to learn stuff that people go to school for years to learn. Usually you'll be presented the option when you sign up - I recommend starting with one of the more recognizable companies - like Merrill Lynch, Fidelity, Prudential, John Hancock, etc;. Read their websites, learn, and compare.
With 401ks, you sometimes will have employers maintain these accounts for you and help contribute a portion on your behalf, so most people don't go out of their way to open one separately for themselves. I would recommend opening one for yourself while you're young as the returns are much greater the earlier your start, even if you aren't consistent with putting in money or stop paying in if/when you have a job with the 401k benefits. If you have kids, it's also a great idea to open a retirement account for them as they can use it for college and, again, the earlier you start on one, the better. You really shouldn't touch your 401k at all until you retire if you can help it for the best outcome, but, imo, using 401ks to double as a college saving account can be a great thing. Just encourage that they don't wipe out all their retirement funds early in life, and pay attention to the 'rules' of the 401k/IRA as you can get penalized for using these funds for unqualified reasons.
For the rental property and business partnerships - you're probably going to need a solid chunk of money to get to this point. Try not to compare yourself to the 25 year olds who have their hands in a lot of investment properties - most people who work for themselves aren't able to do this sort of investing until a little later in life. But rub elbows early in life with local business owners, especially those who have been around longer and have success. Invest more readily in business owners who have had success rather than your high school buddy who has some 'revolutionary idea'. There's a chance your buddy could be successful, but it's usually much more profitable to follow the lead of people who've had, maintained, and sold a few businesses already. This sort of investing is more about networking and knowing people. Even with rental properties - you'll do much better if you have connections with management companies, other landlords, land developers, and repairmen. So be friendly when you go out to bars and whatnot as this requires talking. You'd be surprised the types of skills random people you meet might have, so don't assume someone in egirl makeup is just some dumb bimbo - I'm met plenty who have their own businesses and a huge network of successful people that they're willing to introduce you to if you're just kind to them and competent in your own skills.

I love this video. I ran my business for 4 years and it was very successful but after COVID I just wanted something different and I was able to step straight into a high paying role because I had business experience. It’s a massive plus for any business that’s hiring, especially if at any point you hired staff. If someone asked me whether they should go back to uni to get a higher role I’d always recommend running their own business instead. Obviously this often only works for some industries. Doctors should go back to uni lol

I really appreciate your sincerity in this video, but I think you made it sound so simple, sometimes I see artists talking about diversifying your ways of income, but most of the time, all of them are conected, patreon, youtube, sales on instagram, they all depend on a following. So if you don’t have success in one of them, you probably won’t be able to have on others. What is sad is, the majority of artists will be starving, because, it’s not about knowing finances, or having great identidy and quality of work or consistensy
