      I have a granddaughter, Isabella ! She is 11. From babyhood she watched her uncle use a big, four station, screen printing press and her mother using a Cricut machine, to make T-shirts. I am the main sewer in the group. Cricut machines, screen printing machines, printing screens and the heat presses are EXPENSIVE. Uncle recently sold his big, used printing press for $8,000 ! ! Foil sheets for Cricut are pricey, there can be alot of waste in materials if you don't plan ahead. Making screens is tedious, needs practice and uses chemicals. Sewing and serging machines are expensive, fabrics are getting expensive. At 10, your daughter probably doesn't have much/enough, experience with any of these crafts. In a business setting, YOU would be doing a lot of the work, because she is a child. But your daughter, and you, can learn and practice now, with a little effort and small investment in equipment. Our library has a "Maker Room". There is a sewing machine and cutting mats, cutters, a die cutting machine, with dies, a Cricut machine, (no heat press), button maker, mannequin, photo set up and green screen. There is an instructor but not expert. Machines have instruction manuals. Sometimes there are classes - for a fee. A community art center also offers classes in many diverse subjects. College/university may offer classes for children. Get an overview of different, saleable, arts/crafts, choose something you are interested in. Then find used equipment, like her sewing machine, or learn how to make your own stencils or screens. We are using loose screens, stencils and airbrushing now. Go to thrift stores, on "dollar day" for fabrics to practice on. Get dyes, inks, stamps, stencils at art/craft store sale, closeout section. Practice your craft with the inexpensive supplies. Some of those may even be sellable. Find a compatable consignment shop for test sales. Most important - learn business practices, account keeping and any licensing requirements in your city. Keep business finances seperate from your household account. Our 11 year old only makes jewelry for herself, clothes, quilts, for her own doll and films mini-movies in their "room" that an uncle built. Production manufacturing is too boring. BUT - she is VERY good at picking out fabrics and designs that we use to make things for sale and "staging" photos for the shop.

    it's so nice to see (technically) handmade embroidered clothes being made for once! most merch vloggers i watch just outsource their labor.

    • @KittenBowl1
      @KittenBowl1 2 года назад +129

      That’s not hand made, it’s machine embroidery just like in factory. She’s just using less sophisticated home version of embroidery machines used in a factory. My grandfather is a tailor, professional one and THAT is hand sewing as he crates his own patterns by measuring your body and make a suit, involving hand stitches. If you don’t know actual embroidery is hand stitched by actual hand with a needle and embroidery threads, it takes A LOT of time, not something that can be completed during a dog walk while machine embroiders. That’s machine embroidery and that’s NOT hand crafting at all. Don’t say handmade when it’s exactly how it’s done in retail factory. Btw, that home machine can’t meet the quality of actual embroidery done in professional factory. Embroidery machines that cost under $10,000 can’t ever compete embroidery machines that cost $50,000-100,000. Stop saying handmade when it’s not.

    • @KittenBowl1
      @KittenBowl1 2 года назад +50

      @@nstar1372 Why are you talking about efficiency that’s not the topic here and handcrafting takes a long time, that’s why hand embroidered dresses cost quite a lot. Comparing factory worker to craftsman aren’t the same. This is mass produced sweat shirts nothing else. Basically she just works at home doing exactly what she would be doing in a retail factory, she’s a factory worker who has her own business that does the packaging herself, not a craftsman. For hand embroidery, you transfer designs by tracing paper to clothes where you want to hand embroider. You can use pre-printed patterns on paper and you can trace the designs onto clothes but that’s not what’s important. The quality is not even comparable. You take however many threads you like (usually 100% satin embroidery cotton, which cannot be used in embroidery machine), depending on the volume of flower or specific pattern you want and put the number of threads on a embroidery needle and start hand embroidering, a stitch by stitch. That’s handcrafting and hand made this is not. There’re a number of different stitches as well and the result looks completely different when it’s done by machine, very flat. Machine cannot ever imitate hand embroidery which looks quite exquisite and it’s an art that takes years to learn, unlike this type of mass produced sweat shirts. You can even hand embroider on delicate knitted clothes with special yarn embroidery threads. Now that’s handmade and handcrafted. This isn’t at all. If you don’t understand how wrong for this person to say this is handcrafting, try looking up French embroidery videos of people who create their own designs (hand drawing) and show you how it’s done. It’s quite breathtaking and exquisite. This is retail factory setting at home, nothing more.

      With the very high cost of "better" equipment, I would work with what is at hand (or borrowable) and place merchandise in boutique consignment shops, or online, first. That way you can learn the tastes of your customers. Making one or two of each item, with style variations, you can gage what could be profitably made in multiples. In my city there are a even a couple of community sponsored shops. Use social media to promote your products and direct customers to the shop, or EBay account. Save as much of the profits as possible. When upgrading is necessary/practical you can purchase used equipment for cash. An amazing number of people buy new, VERY expensive equipment, then sell it cheaply when their plans fail or they become tired of the work involved. Save your basic machine for emergency use if a breakdown occurs.

    I've always liked videos like these, but there never seems to be a starting point... how did you manage to pay for all the equipment to get where you're at now? Don't most business owners, even small ones, need to be licensed? There's so many small details I feel like dont really get explained much in videos like these... I'd really like to know!
