I find it so interesting how no specific number at all or whatsoever is mentioned.... As if to keep things a secret and not really really trying to help out those trying to get a real idea on how to price a job
I am good at pricing small jobs. I struggle with pricing installs and larger jobs. How to find out what others charge for similar jobs? I had a customer tell me what her contractor said she should pay, plus 4 estimates others were charging. To me it didn’t make sense. I wasn’t sure how they could make money so I sent my estimate and never follows up. My estimate was higher than the others. I wasn’t willing to put in cheap equipment or reduce what I wanted to make per week. Now I am trying to price out a radiant heat job. Has to be an easier way to create estimates
Flat rate= charging the customer more$ , sometimes even gouging them. If you have a good company that charges fair prices, you will be swamped in the summer with AC calls. During the winter you'll hang in there by your commercial maintenance contracts and heating calls when its cold. The company i worked for has been in business for 30+ years and has always charged T&M.
Great question. Many businesses who are on flat rate would not serve a customer with customer-provided parts (for a variety of reasons). Or, if they would still perform the work, they would not discount their price because you’re not selling time & labor. As an example: if you ordered a burger at a restaurant, but asked that they not put on lettuce, tomato, onion and cheese, would they make the burger cheaper? Nope.
I am going for a estimate job Commercial plumbing. And And I am green in the estimate part but I have been a plumber for 20 years I have to do is take all four of them on a small job what is the best way to do that because they are wanting to see if I am close to their numbers what do I do I have to know from them their percentage their markup and so on. I was just Wondering if you can give me some pointers because I really want this job but I’m green if you could help me thank you
Great question! There are a couple of books that are popular- like New Flat Rate or ProfitRhino. And the end, it doesn’t matter which book you use, as long as the numbers are designed to fit your business. Thanks for the kudos!

Your math is based on *your* math. You can't price your work based on someone else's operations.

Mystery shopping your competition seems like would be a great strategy for you to implement.
