So good man. A question about your hand position at set up. Are you slightly forward of ball? If so, how far is best? Maybe you already have made one on that and explains this in more details. Thank you for always great content and clear instructions. Wishing you the best!!!
Love this video/lesson. This swing is geared towards hitting down on the ball as you would want with an iron in your hands. Question: since you want to hit “up” on a driver, are there any changes to be made when hitting a driver?
You always want to replace forward bend with side bend So the longer the club the less forward bend you have a setup (you are taller) So you tilt less 90* to starting backswing always a good place to start
Eric, very good. Thank you. What about right side bend on the way down? Or are we saying that removes the slant that we want. A little confused what to do on downswing
Hey Peter! I think these two videos will help you best: ruclips.net/video/qgk4lUWTWAk/видео.html ruclips.net/video/WfqDbTB0Zf8/видео.html Thanks for watching!
Reminds me a lot of the Stack & Tilt method by Bennet and Plummer from about ten years ago. That's by no means being critical. I like this instruction video a lot. Tilt is crucial for hitting iron shots consistently. But does it work for a driver swing as well?
Eric, what would you recommend as the weight distribution on lead and trail feet at set-up? Does the weight balance become more lead foot based as the swing commences or does it stay the same (to keep the head stationary)? Great video and content - thank you 👏
Hey Will! I would start roughly 50-50 or slightly more forward with irons like 55-60 Left Pressure on balls of feet just forward or middle to start Some on how it goes in swing: ruclips.net/video/S-sWOuNt_O8/видео.html ruclips.net/video/pdRisKYTAjc/видео.html
Great video Eric and Jess. But I agree with another commenter who said he would like more attention to the downswing part of this tilting activity. For me, that also seems like the hardest piece of the stack and tilt.

Great information. Look at how much Trevino tilts. Both back and through. Also, Jack sets up the neck tilt at the start by swivelling his head to the right.
This was a great video for me. See after not playing for 16 years I’m now retired and finally able to play again. I’ve been filming myself and I’m amazed that I actually make good consistent contact lol…my head moves down and back then back up and into the circle ⭕️ I have drawn around my head. To do that I get up on my toes and I’m losing distance because my right wrist has released before contact. How do I correct this ? I don’t feel myself doing this but the video says otherwise. Any drills to keep my feet planted would be greatly appreciated
I would set this station up at home and hit 20-30 balls per day for next 12 months to keep head in circle ruclips.net/video/TIDfZFdNW_0/видео.html that would teach you what to feel with your feet to keep head there If not you can work on feet directly several ways....if you dont get it sorted consider www.cogornogolf.com you can sign up for 7 day free trial and send in your swings!
Great, I'm practicing your great tips all the time. Side bend and tilt is so important. I would love to hear more about timing... greets from Germany !
Eric thank you for sharing this great video. Would you say that someone who has let say less tilt in backswing will have really difficulty to take the right shoulder down and forward, thus ending up more level Thank you.
Great video, Eric. I enjoyed the entire series of you and Jess coaching together! What about weight shift, does weight start 60/40 on the lead leg through the backswing with no shift to the back leg? Thanks!
Hey Paul! At setup I like to see 50/50 to 60/40 left for clubs when the ball is on the ground. More 50/50 with driver The pressure in the feet goes right (away from the target) to about 70-80% for the first 1/2 of the backswing....now the key is.... The pressure goes right in the feet BUT the mass of the body doesn't move right (away from target) it stays centered. From 1/2 back to top of backswing its slowly starting to move back toward the target then progressively more toward the target throughout downswing
Excellent, Tried yesterday on the range, my feelings were 1. Tension at setup, impact,&follow through2. Ball flight high and left. Did not yet see this video. Will try today. Any secret to reduce tension, attain soft arms, relaxed wrists, in order to get fluidity throughout the swing?
Hey John! Likely no secrets but focused effort IF that's causing you issues here are some resources that may help ruclips.net/video/VQ2fVOx6re8/видео.html ruclips.net/video/a3aPYb1VP3s/видео.html
Eric, does this also help to take the hands out of it in terms of tension? Letting the hands go for the ride a bit? A lot of stack & tilt philosophy here yes? Thanks as always, Gary
Hey Gary! I'm not so sure what effect this will have on tension in the arms/hands.. You could say if you get the body motions correct you don't need to rely on the arms and hands as much!
It could...I would need to see your swing on video to say for sure. Check out www.cogornogolf.com if you dont get it sorted....but flat backswing turn could be why!
Difference in tilt: iron vs driver? Probably related to my follow-up question: difference in tilt: shorter vs taller golfer? Seems like shorter golfer with same length club would tilt less - just unsure how significant this would be (if correct). I see recordings of myself, draw the lines, see that I am apparently not tilted nearly enough and then wonder about club length and player height influence on these general illustrations. Any thoughts/pointers/links?
Hey Ashton! There would be a difference in terms of the AMOUNT of tilt from club to club, but the same general concept here applies to all clubs. It also applies to all possible player heights. If you drew a line through your spine/back line at setup, you want to tilt your shoulders down about 90° to that initial spine angle line. This allows the golfer to keep their head centered. 90° to the back line is a good checkpoint throughout the bag. Replace the amount of forward bend at setup with tilt in the backswing. So if you are 30° bent over at setup, tilt your shoulders 30°ish. Since you are bent over more or less with different clubs, that will change that. So with a wedge where you are more bent over at setup, there is more tilt automatically in the backswing. You are less bent over with the driver, so 90° to that line will be less tilted over in the backswing. Hope this is helpful!
This is something I have never done in my swing and never, as far as I know, had it explained to me by any of the teachers i’ve seen over two decades. I have always thought the shoulder turn was just to turn my shoulders on a level plane and that could be my biggest problem. I’m very grateful for this very key and important element to the golf swing. I agree it could be the missing link for all of us amateur golfers who struggle.
This has to be one of the greatest videos. Thank you so much. Do you have a video going in depth into tilt in the driver swing at all stages of the swing? I know on set up how important side tilt is but would be great to talk about the stages just like this video. Thanks Eric.
Thanks! I don't think we have driver tilt specific but its the same concept. Shoulders 90* to back line is a good baseline Since you stand taller with Driver there will be less tilt
Eric, I noticed Justin Thomas in particular has his left arm at the top of the swing at an even steeper angle to the ground than his shoulders. Do you recommend trying to get to that position or is same angle for lead arm and shoulders best position for most of us?
Hey Jim! Yes...while he is able to lower it and perform incredibly (from lots of right side bend among other pieces) that would not be the easiest way for most golfers.. I would suggest the lead arm ON or slightly above shoulder plan....butt of club in middle of feet to heel ruclips.net/video/6quQa2Wr0bY/видео.html
Hey Richard! Nope. You EXTEND (chest UP) as your left shoulder goes down. The combination of those two keeps your head in the circle ruclips.net/video/YquRd9mVUzY/видео.html ruclips.net/video/90Iy1Lm1ynw/видео.html
So Jesse is coming from the stackn tilt school? Very interesting video. But left shoulder down, left knee down, how does that work with students how tend to have no separation, who just turns the hip and shoulders together?
@@CogornoGolf aha, I thought all good golfers needed to separate lower from upper body in the backswing also, to be able to do it in the downswing. But maybe Im confusing hip separation with pelvis rotation? It just looks wrong when people turn back hips and shoulders together to my eyes. Like they are loading the left side instead of the right side.
Hey Tim! Hard to give you a good answer there without seeing your swing. Need to see what's going on. Consider joining our team at www.cogornogolf.com you can send your video in there for feedback!
Nope...maintaining If you put a dot on the base of your neck....thst should stay pretty stable in backswing You are replacing forward bend at setup with side bend during backswing to the degree that it stays stable
Hey Eric! We are using "side bend" and "tilt" interchangeably here. The side bend technically would be the shoulder getting closer to the hip WITHOUT the hips moving in the opposite direction. TILT would be the shoulder lowering AS the hips move in the opposite direction. There is some of each
Thank you for the thoughtful response. I’ve been following you for quite awhile thru COVID and you’ve really helped me. To the degree that I was joking the other day that I’ve been making some changes to my swing and intentions with my swing that have been so beneficial that it makes me want to leave a flaming bag of poo on my early golf instructors doorstep, metaphorically of course. And I was already a mid single index. One issue I keep working on is when and at what pace to incorporate side bend in transition, sometimes I feel like it can lead me to hang back a bit. I know you’ve done videos on it. Your Ben hogan piece was helpful. I know positions can make one “staticky” but a further exploration of your drill / feel with the iron held against your side / intercostal serratus area to the ball at impact would be appreciated by me and others too I think. Keep up the great work.
Eric, it seems like how far the ball is away from the body has more of an influence on this than it first appears. Or am I missing something? How do we have enough tilt on short irons, or especially long irons with standard lengths etc.??
Hey! Of course. You are replacing your forward bend with side bend in backswing. I think the answers you are looking for can be found here: ruclips.net/video/Z3WRJIYky10/видео.html Here is more on distance from the ball: ruclips.net/video/c5FJRwZ_GnI/видео.html
Eric just to put things into perspective: is this the opposite to the "throw out"? Is this more of a hit as opposed to a swing in Golfing Machine terminology? Thank you as always...
I like 50/50 to start 70-30 ish by left arm parallel in the backswing (pressure shifted not body mass) From left arm parallel to the top start working slowly back to target to 50/50 at the top Then 70/30 to 80/20 by impact hope that helps
Another great Eric Cogorno video. I had a level shoulder turn away from the ball before. This is eye opening instruction. Thank you for letting us view these.
One thing I (think I) notice is that Mr. Cogorno’s right hip does not move much in the backswing away from the target line. Instead it seems to move more towards the target as the knee straightens. There is a school of thought that the right hip should more away from the target line so that the hips both rotate around the sacrum that stays a set distance away from the target line. I find that if I think “left knee and left shoulder down” my body pivots around my right hip instead of the sacrum and the left side of my body sways towards the target line. Seems to me that is a danger that needs to be avoided that might arise from this otherwise excellent video.
I believe a big peice is missing and that’s the hip sway toward the target at the same time you make the transition so if someone is trying to flip the tilt they need to be blended with the proper hip pivot since that makes the down swing tilt a lot harder to accomplish
I noticed that with your follow through you didn’t roll your wrists (right hand) counterclockwise. Jack Nicklaus did move the wrists counterclockwise about 1/4 quarter turn. Your wrists turned from 12 O’clock to 11:58. Hardly moved after impact. Your way makes it easier to stay squared to the target through impact.
Hey Frank! Both can work...it depends a lot on your GRIP style and your club face angle coming into the ball The more strong the grip and the more closed the face the less roll needed. ruclips.net/video/8Cg2O8atmYY/видео.html
@@CogornoGolf About the fairway iron play. The old saying that you can’t do two things right at the same time. If you’re hitting the ground then you can’t be hitting the ball. People watching experience the joy of the ball being hit and the result.
@@CogornoGolf I was just kidding around... but it can definitely get confusing. You have a great channel! I’ll take your advice on just focusing on 2-3 concepts. Thanks
This helped me immediately. As Eric knows, I have been working on improving depth and turn and am getting better over the last year or so, but I still struggle with poor quality of contact and early extension but am working on that also. I took this video lesson to heart and the course on Saturday with really no practice. I have never hit the ball so well off the tee! 12/14 fairways and 4/4 GIR on the par 3s! Thanks again EC for all you do!
Understand the importance of the tilt - but I kinda miss the important "extend" component that was highlighted in the previous video. Maybe too late - but would be nice to see how the "tilt" and the "extend" blend together.

Unfortunately my game collapsed to the extent that I even thought giving up. As a last resort I started watching loads of RUclips videos including your channel plus various others. I feel I have learned a huge amount which I don't think would have happened if I had relied solely on "in person lessons". I just need to put it all into practice although that is hard in the current environment (at least in the UK). I am deliberately trying to watch fewer videos now unless the topic catches my eye but am interested in learning more about ground reaction forces if you are thinking about new topics for videos. Cheers.
Eric superb. Your videos are ‘the nuts’ as we say in England !

Hope it helps, Chris!
Love this video/lesson. This swing is geared towards hitting down on the ball as you would want with an iron in your hands. Question: since you want to hit “up” on a driver, are there any changes to be made when hitting a driver?
You always want to replace forward bend with side bend
So the longer the club the less forward bend you have a setup (you are taller)
So you tilt less
90* to starting backswing always a good place to start
Awesome video. My coach has be doing these same drills for the past 3 months and I am down to a 8 hdcp now.
Love it!
Eric, very good. Thank you. What about right side bend on the way down? Or are we saying that removes the slant that we want. A little confused what to do on downswing

Great video. Would really have liked to see more on the downswing as it's the hardest part of this swing.
Thanks, Larry!
Reminds me a lot of the Stack & Tilt method by Bennet and Plummer from about ten years ago. That's by no means being critical. I like this instruction video a lot. Tilt is crucial for hitting iron shots consistently. But does it work for a driver swing as well?
Absolutely!
Excellent tip, been working on tilt this makes it much easier.
Thanks, Floyd!
As a second-year golfer. This is great advice. Thank you!

Eric, what would you recommend as the weight distribution on lead and trail feet at set-up? Does the weight balance become more lead foot based as the swing commences or does it stay the same (to keep the head stationary)?
Great video and content - thank you 👏
Hey Will!
I would start roughly 50-50 or slightly more forward with irons like 55-60 Left

I would set this station up at home and hit 20-30 balls per day for next 12 months to keep head in circle

that would teach you what to feel with your feet to keep head there

Eric thank you for sharing this great video. Would you say that someone who has let say less tilt in backswing will have really difficulty to take the right shoulder down and forward, thus ending up more level
Thank you.
Hey!
Sometime YES but sometimes NO.
Even with good tilt in backswing you could make good or bad downswing moves.

Great video, Eric. I enjoyed the entire series of you and Jess coaching together! What about weight shift, does weight start 60/40 on the lead leg through the backswing with no shift to the back leg? Thanks!
Hey Paul!
At setup
I like to see 50/50 to 60/40 left for clubs when the ball is on the ground.
More 50/50 with driver
The pressure in the feet goes right (away from the target) to about 70-80% for the first 1/2 of the backswing....now the key is....
The pressure goes right in the feet BUT the mass of the body doesn't move right (away from target) it stays centered.
From 1/2 back to top of backswing its slowly starting to move back toward the target then progressively more toward the target throughout downswing
Thanks so much, Eric!
This is great! Something I can practice at the house. Thanks once again.
Thanks, Tim! Our pleasure!

Eric, does this also help to take the hands out of it in terms of tension?
Letting the hands go for the ride a bit?
A lot of stack & tilt philosophy here yes? Thanks as always, Gary
Hey Gary!
I'm not so sure what effect this will have on tension in the arms/hands..
You could say if you get the body motions correct you don't need to rely on the arms and hands as much!
@@CogornoGolf I'm starting to understand the concept of using the spine as a lever. If I could only get the left wrist to behave through impact!
Great video. At least once a round I hit a sh*nk. Could tilt help with this? I think my backswing is very flat.
Hi left hand on left knee gives you the feeling of tilting, thanks

Excellent lesson thanks
Appreciate it! Our pleasure!
Hope it helps, Grace!
Thank u for this. I so needed it

Shoulders 90* to back line is a good baseline
Since you stand taller with Driver there will be less tilt
Wow awesome thanks Eric
You got it!!
Great video!!! Very helpful
thanks, Jonathan!
I would suggest the lead arm ON or slightly above shoulder plan....butt of club in middle of feet to heel
ruclips.net/video/6quQa2Wr0bY/видео.html
Where does the back swing extension fit into the backswing as mentioned on prior video. W ould this change the spine angle on the backswing?
Hey Richard!
Nope.
You EXTEND (chest UP) as your left shoulder goes down.
The combination of those two keeps your head in the circle

@@CogornoGolf thanx, i been S&T the last few months but have a hard time with driver.. I’ll just tilt now
So Jesse is coming from the stackn tilt school? Very interesting video. But left shoulder down, left knee down, how does that work with students how tend to have no separation, who just turns the hip and shoulders together?
Hey Mange!
Everyone must tilt. That applies for all golfers regardless of their current pattern.
@@CogornoGolf I get that and totally agree, was just curios how much separation you need in the golf swing. Thanks for the answer!!!
More separation isn't NEEDED.....BUT.....it definitely creates more SPEED!
ruclips.net/video/yycej75cYIo/видео.html
@@CogornoGolf aha, I thought all good golfers needed to separate lower from upper body in the backswing also, to be able to do it in the downswing. But maybe Im confusing hip separation with pelvis rotation? It just looks wrong when people turn back hips and shoulders together to my eyes. Like they are loading the left side instead of the right side.

Is tilt ADDING angle to address abgle on backswing?
Nope...maintaining
If you put a dot on the base of your neck....thst should stay pretty stable in backswing
You are replacing forward bend at setup with side bend during backswing to the degree that it stays stable
Wow awesome Eric thanks!!!
Thanks-our pleasure!
I’m curious about the combination of sidebend with the tilt. I feel that side end is a critical component as well.

Eric just to put things into perspective: is this the opposite to the "throw out"? Is this more of a hit as opposed to a swing in Golfing Machine terminology? Thank you as always...
Hey Jose!
I don't think so, nope.
At P4 for this type of swing, how much pressure is distributed among your feet (looks like it's slightly more on the lead side)?
I like 50/50 to start
70-30 ish by left arm parallel in the backswing (pressure shifted not body mass)
From left arm parallel to the top start working slowly back to target to 50/50 at the top
Then 70/30 to 80/20 by impact
hope that helps
@@CogornoGolf Def helped! I'm sure you've made a video that demonstrates this? What should I search for? Thanks man!
Hi what about weight shift ?
How much weight to r side as looks like v little as dip left shoulder on backswing

More on that coming up, David!
Another great Eric Cogorno video. I had a level shoulder turn away from the ball before. This is eye opening instruction. Thank you for letting us view these.
Hope this one helps your game, Richard!
Thanks! I agree I could do better there!
I believe a big peice is missing and that’s the hip sway toward the target at the same time you make the transition so if someone is trying to flip the tilt they need to be blended with the proper hip pivot since that makes the down swing tilt a lot harder to accomplish
Thanks for the feedback, Larry!
Here's a video on the hip action you may like to check out👍

I noticed that with your follow through you didn’t roll your wrists (right hand) counterclockwise. Jack Nicklaus did move the wrists counterclockwise about 1/4 quarter turn. Your wrists turned from 12 O’clock to 11:58. Hardly moved after impact. Your way makes it easier to stay squared to the target through impact.
Hey Frank! Both can work...it depends a lot on your GRIP style and your club face angle coming into the ball
The more strong the grip and the more closed the face the less roll needed.

And a few irons that were so well struck it was like a Eureka! moment. I didn’t score well (37 putts) but I am off today (Monday) and headed to the range with a lot of excitement and enthusiasm. Thanks again EC for all you do!
how does bending/ tilting promote a ball first strike/ prevent fat shots? It was not elaborated.
Hey!
To start: if you don't tilt....how would you strike the ground?
Understand the importance of the tilt - but I kinda miss the important "extend" component that was highlighted in the previous video. Maybe too late - but would be nice to see how the "tilt" and the "extend" blend together.
Thanks for the feedback Steve!
You do both together progressively through each side of the swing to the point where the head stays in the circle.
