I have been struggling with a vicious slice when using my driver for years. Nothing I tried could correct it and I couldn’t figure out what I was doing wrong so I just played to my slice. I watched this video and tried it at the range last week. I am completely shocked. All this time I’ve been concerned with my rotation through my swing. It never occurred to me that I needed more rotation in my back swing but soon as I rotated back to the point that my left shoulder is pointing at the ball BAM STRAIGHT BOMBS RIGHT UP THE MIDDLE. Thank you for the direction, it has made me love the game all over again.
The two of you are my favorite golf coaches on YT. Watched these videos of you two and went out and had my best ball striking round I’ve ever had. Stack and tilt is a great swing for solid golf shots.
Finding Tom changed my life his no bs teaching method had me watching then when I went outside and hit the ball like crispy kfc I was like wtf is this STACK N TILT now shoot in low 80's instead of low 90's.
I tried it and it worked incredibly well for me. I had been working on getting the trail shoulder down towards the ball with shoulder tilt and side bend. Working the lead shoulder down on the backswing instead is simple to do and very repeatable. I adjusted to the S&T setup very quickly and feel very confident over the ball now. I'm a S&T convert. Thanks to Eric & Tom. Current handicap 1.

He brings joy and fun into the golf swing! Well done Eric - I think you were very brave bringing this guy to the front! Love it , you make a great team!
Love it that you two guys got together. My two favorite coaches. I love to practice but more than often probably not correctly. But I do go out with your tips and attempt to emulate what you are telling us. Cheers guys 😎🏌️
I could never relate to the phrase "keep your head down", or "you're picking up your head"...when they should actually say you've lost your spine angle, you have swayed during your backswing and now you have to sway back through impact. But I totally understand maintaining your spine angle, avoiding the sway, keeping that spine angle on the backswing and through impact. These videos with Tom Saguto are really connecting for me. Thank you Eric and Tom!
It's been working great for me and trying to get the left shoulder past the ball then whack it to the target.. No more thoughts than that. Best tips came from you to guys. Left shoulder down to ball and left shoulder past the ball in backswing. Thanks
Somehow I had never thought about shoulder tilt before, this was definitely the missing piece to getting my swing right. I took this to the course today and shot 76 off a 10 handicap. I wish I could give this more than one Like. Thanks Eric.
4:16 Classic Stack and Tilt Mike Bennett. A little spine tilt toward the target added to your own natural swing will prevent swaying and promote better contact. You just have to not over do it like golfers tend to do with a swing adjustment.
(Larry San Diego) Love your videos with a variety of Master Instructors and RUclips popular instructors - Tom Saguto. Tjis lesson in particular which you have emphasized in the past is a great reminder to exaggerate the left shoulder down in our backswing drills. Thanks for your outreach to others on RUclips. The one thing I love about your channel is that you bring on so many different teachers with different swing philosophies and you let them pitch their ideas without shooting them down. I know you have your own philosophy about what is the right way to swing the golf club but it's impressive to me that you go into these videos with a open mind and find the good in all of their instruction and tips
Yessss!! Been watching Saguto for 2 months now. He's helped me a lot with ball striking, but I was still being inconsistent at times with topping the ball and fat shots. I would go to the range and do something right, but not transfer it to the course. Also I would lose my striking to my divot board with bad strikes and multiple times just swinging the air with no contact. Worked on it a bit after watching this video. I changed and concentrated on 2 things: really focusing on pointing the shoulder at the ball (while straightening the trail leg to get tilt) and getting that forward bent relationship more than I was. Going to stay away from that "office posture".....curious if it works for driver as well! Regardless I still had some fat shots, but more pure strikes in front of the ball on the board than I've had in weeks. Can't wait to bring it to the course on Sunday!
I took a video lesson with Tom and learned a lot! The tilt of the left shoulder feels weird at first, but it is amazing how well it leads to good ball striking
This has always been my problem. It seems I can not tilt enough due to flexibility, I guess 😢 But I won't give up just yet 😊 Thanks Eric & and Tom for this video. I'm really glad I came across this. 😍

Therefore, some of my balls are going straight to the right (push). Any comments on how to avoid that ? Carlos (from Portugal)
Good stuff, I like the realism, Tom is as he is, you Eric are able to mix with the best - great combo in this series - did Mike Malaska say prior in earlier video with you that he suggests starting the swing with a slight move (weight transfer) to the left side - thanks as too many fail to see as you show, all good swings that LAST, are degrees of tilt.
Thanks so much Eric & Tom, this has been a game changer for me. I started using this advice for my rescue shots from rough, it provided me incredible power and consistency. Then I used this tip for every Iron shot, even from the tee. Do you think it can be used with driver as well ? Never tried, but I surely will ! Thanks again 👍👍👍
Hey Jerome! Yes....but less with driver you are trying to replace forward bend with side bend Driver you setup the tallest (least forward bend) so less side bend in backswing ruclips.net/video/Z3WRJIYky10/видео.html
Eric, here in Columbia, SC. Myrtle Beach is a great and fun trip.. What did you think of the town? Great lesson. Once you understand tilt, your game gets crazy better.
Hi guys i have a tip that helped me. It should feel like the club is going away from the hole and your upper body is moving towards it on the backswing and the opposite on the down swing.
I like that Paul as a FEEL of course so long as you don't overdo it (like anything else) If you draw a circle around your head at setup you want your head to stay in that.....that requires left shoulder down in backswing and right shoulder down in downswing
Thanks Eric and Tom….great instruction! The left shoulder down move has helped me prevent swaying away from the ball. For driver, with ball position more forward, do you recommend “extreme” left shoulder down feel?
Hey Bob! Nope-with driver should still down BUT you are just replacing forward bend So with driver you are less bent over at setup to less shoulder tilt. Wedge more bent over so more tilt Replace forward bend with side tilt in backswing We talked about irons vs driver tilt here: ruclips.net/video/Z3WRJIYky10/видео.html
Thank you Eric! After many in-person lessons with drills to prevent hip sway away from ball the “left shoulder down” works like magic. Also appreciate the link you provided for tilt with irons vs. driver. Great video and explanation.
Hey Rene! ITs different.... You are always looking to replace the amount of forward bend with side bend So longer clubs you are less bent over at setup=less tilt Shorter clubs more bent over=more tilt I THINK we go over that in this video ruclips.net/video/Z3WRJIYky10/видео.html
Hey Scotty! Thanks for being here with us! You are always looking to replace forward bend with side bend so with driver you just have less I believe the full explanation on that here ruclips.net/video/5PyZRor9RGA/видео.html ruclips.net/video/Z3WRJIYky10/видео.html
Easy way to confirm is to draw a circle around your head at setup Keep your head dead in the circle as you get to the top of your backswing with a full turn that's how you know you're perfectly centered and have zero reverse pivot hope this helps!
Love it....KIND of! you want to replace forward bend with side bend in backswing Les forward bend with driver at setup so less going back Talk about that more here: ruclips.net/video/Z3WRJIYky10/видео.html
I agree that the left should goes down to towards the ball on the back swing but the right shoulder takes its place on the downswing,,,,,equally important
This is a good start and an essential move.. but don't forget that the left side has to move forward and the hips rotate around where the shoulders are facing the target.. without doing this you'll just slam the club into the ground. The follow-through is just as important as the backswing.
Heyo Eric! I definitely don't tilt enough, but when I do my head is absolutely not staying in the circle. However, I am able to shallow and rotate much much better when I tilt, which is weird. But how do I keep my head steady now??
Hey Christoph! Here are a few videos that I think will help you out: ruclips.net/video/mksbOP0RSBw/видео.html ruclips.net/video/TMMCQz3nlmw/видео.html ruclips.net/video/TIDfZFdNW_0/видео.html Thanks for watching the channel!
Eric, what are your thoughts on the full on stack and tilt swing like Tom does. I have tried it and block everything (10 handicapper here). The only PGA tour pro I have ever heard that did it is Mike Weir. Thx.
Hey Danny. I think its a good option for a lot of people Of course there are varying degrees of all of the pieces demonstrated amongst players Really good for higher handicaps
Great stuff as always. Any correlation between this and backswing hip depth? I notice my lead shoulder tends to rise in the late stages of my backswing and I also have a hard time overcoming the hip movement pattern that you and Mike Malaska discuss in another video (lead hip moves in on backswing and trail hip moves in on downswing). Wondering if tackling this might organically help me get my trail hip deeper in the backswing.
Hey Evan! Yes! 100% correlation Left shoulder back----right hip back. Left shoulder up--right hip in. I would do this drill while pushing right hip back ruclips.net/video/Z3WRJIYky10/видео.html
I just want to point out that the front on views of Tiger 9:34 and DJ 9:50 clearly show the spine tilted away from the target, not towards it. Their left shoulders are down toward the ball though.
Hey Bryan! The spine should not be tilted TOWARD the target. You start in a few degrees of side bend at setup You stay in a few degrees of flexion at top But the left shoulder goes down on both sides
Did it for a bit but then started to reverse pivot. I prefer to get the left shoulder way behind the ball like Arnold. I feel if I do that it forces me to get through the ball better. Obviously that’s just my personal experience
Hi guys, would this be the same with driver?? Or do you want the driver more flat and around?? I have Improved my irons but lost my driving! Lol I have even hit the ground before the ball with driver!! 😱 thanks
Hey Scott! The idea is to replace the amount of forward bend with side bend...so since you are standing taller (less bent over) with driver you will have less shoulder down I believe we discuss that in some of these ruclips.net/video/Z3WRJIYky10/видео.html ruclips.net/video/5PyZRor9RGA/видео.html
Hey Tyler! Yes...you need left side bend (left shoulder down with ALL clubs) More with shorter clubs, less with longer clubs. You are trying to replace your forward bend amount with left side bend at top So wedge you are more bent over at setup and driver less bent over. Wedge more side bend than driver. Talk about that here: ruclips.net/video/Z3WRJIYky10/видео.html
My question is... This is fine, interesting for an iron shot. How does it work with the driver and how does it work with chipping and pitching. We should all know by now that 50% of our shots are around or near the green. Am I going to tilt like a crazy person when I chip or pitch??? Not saying I don't want to try it, saying I can't see how that would work on shorter shots... Eric???
Hey Dan! I would encourage you to head over to Tom's channel to see any videos he has done on driver and chipping and you should get your answers there!
@@CogornoGolf Thanks Eric. This is turning my golf theory and application upside down. But I love it. And I respect the hell out of you for bringing other teachers of other styles to your channel. Love your swing. What would you say as a teacher in terms of teaching "conventional vs stack and tilt"? Because now I'm a bit confused (I have beginning students and we're just about to get into full swing mechanics).
OK, this move is totally missing from my swing, but I don't seem to be able to quit simply turning level, thereby having a flat shoulder plane. How do you force the lead shoulder down? I have a pretty thick chest/torso....is that the problem. And isn't Tom's exaggeration a reverse pivot?
Hey Joel! I would suggest your solution resides within 1. Using video each swing to confirm what you really do compared to your feels 2. Be willing to exaggerate what FEELs like 1000x too much there no real secret to it...exaggeration. Allow left knee to go down and forward to tilt the hips help Here is more that may help with some cues: ruclips.net/video/Z3WRJIYky10/видео.html ruclips.net/video/itMUrdHkHm4/видео.html ruclips.net/video/5PyZRor9RGA/видео.html
Left shoulder down really means left side bend resulting in left shoulder down? Do you commence backswing with LSB and rotation at the same time? Does one start fractionally before the other? I'm thinking maybe start LSB first to get motion correct for left shoulder down
I would think of it as the left side bend, rotation and extension happening 0-100 through entire backswing That will not happen exactly that way for everyone but that's the 101 version.
I have been struggling with a vicious slice when using my driver for years. Nothing I tried could correct it and I couldn’t figure out what I was doing wrong so I just played to my slice.

Just need the down swing now. Plus how to do it slowly. Thanks 🙏

Great collaboration video. Tom's approach may not be mainstream but the physics behind his teachings seem sound.
Thanks, Frankie! tom is great!
Eric, here in Columbia, SC. Myrtle Beach is a great and fun trip.. What did you think of the town? Great lesson. Once you understand tilt, your game gets crazy better.
Love it! We have come down for a week each of the past two years!
You guys are great together !!! 🙏🙏🙏
Appreciate it, James!
Hi guys i have a tip that helped me.
It should feel like the club is going away from the hole and your upper body is moving towards it on the backswing and the opposite on the down swing.
I like that Paul as a FEEL of course so long as you don't overdo it (like anything else)
If you draw a circle around your head at setup you want your head to stay in that.....that requires left shoulder down in backswing and right shoulder down in downswing
Much appreciated this video.. it help me a lot 🤷🏽♂️
Great to hear!

Do you do the same thing with the driver. Left shoulder down or it’s only for iron ? Thanks
Different for driver....check this one out we go through differences:
ruclips.net/video/TJtx-qVSgVU/видео.html
Thanks Eric and Tom….great instruction! The left shoulder down move has helped me prevent swaying away from the ball.
For driver, with ball position more forward, do you recommend “extreme” left shoulder down feel?
Hey Bob! Nope-with driver should still down BUT you are just replacing forward bend
So with driver you are less bent over at setup to less shoulder tilt.
Wedge more bent over so more tilt
Replace forward bend with side tilt in backswing
We talked about irons vs driver tilt here: ruclips.net/video/Z3WRJIYky10/видео.html
Thank you Eric! After many in-person lessons with drills to prevent hip sway away from ball the “left shoulder down” works like magic.
Also appreciate the link you provided for tilt with irons vs. driver. Great video and explanation.

You knew Tom just had to come up into the camera lens.
:)
totally ! I waited for that and Eric laughed
one question, do we tilt the same for driver clubs and irons? since the stance is a little different than with irons.
Hey Rene! ITs different....
You are always looking to replace the amount of forward bend with side bend
So longer clubs you are less bent over at setup=less tilt
Shorter clubs more bent over=more tilt
I THINK we go over that in this video
ruclips.net/video/Z3WRJIYky10/видео.html
@@CogornoGolf thank you very much Eric.
I will try sign up for your program later this year. You are being so so helpful
Would love to have you on the team when you're ready!
Great video Eric just discovering your channel! Curious how this works with a driver where you are tilting right in the setup. Keep up the great work!
Hey Scotty! Thanks for being here with us!
You are always looking to replace forward bend with side bend so with driver you just have less
I believe the full explanation on that here

ruclips.net/video/Z3WRJIYky10/видео.html
Sometimes Im not sure if Im doing this movement correctly or Im going REVERSE PIVOT. I find both movements very similar!
Easy way to confirm is to draw a circle around your head at setup
Keep your head dead in the circle as you get to the top of your backswing with a full turn
that's how you know you're perfectly centered and have zero reverse pivot
hope this helps!
Tremendous video! Went to the practice range this morning. This work's! Crisp iron shots. Is it the same for the driver?? Thanks
Love it....KIND of!
you want to replace forward bend with side bend in backswing
Les forward bend with driver at setup so less going back
Talk about that more here: ruclips.net/video/Z3WRJIYky10/видео.html
@@CogornoGolf love it ?? What?? Thx
1. I love that you said it worked for you
2. Its KIND OF the same for driver (your question)

Awesome video explaination tips
Appreciate it!
I agree that the left should goes down to towards the ball on the back swing but the right shoulder takes its place on the downswing,,,,,equally important
No doubt
ruclips.net/video/itMUrdHkHm4/видео.html
Eric puts such humility into explaining that’s what separates him from the rest.
Thanks Charles!👊
This is a good start and an essential move.. but don't forget that the left side has to move forward and the hips rotate around where the shoulders are facing the target.. without doing this you'll just slam the club into the ground. The follow-through is just as important as the backswing.
Yessir!
Heyo Eric! I definitely don't tilt enough, but when I do my head is absolutely not staying in the circle. However, I am able to shallow and rotate much much better when I tilt, which is weird. But how do I keep my head steady now??

Eric, what are your thoughts on the full on stack and tilt swing like Tom does. I have tried it and block everything (10 handicapper here). The only PGA tour pro I have ever heard that did it is Mike Weir. Thx.
Hey Danny.
I think its a good option for a lot of people
Of course there are varying degrees of all of the pieces demonstrated amongst players
Really good for higher handicaps

Good stuff. Just wondering how, from that top of position, one starts the downswing with that rear leg so straight?
It reflexes first move down then re extends into follow through

Great stuff as always. Any correlation between this and backswing hip depth? I notice my lead shoulder tends to rise in the late stages of my backswing and I also have a hard time overcoming the hip movement pattern that you and Mike Malaska discuss in another video (lead hip moves in on backswing and trail hip moves in on downswing). Wondering if tackling this might organically help me get my trail hip deeper in the backswing.
Hey Evan!
Yes!
100% correlation
Left shoulder back----right hip back.
Left shoulder up--right hip in.
I would do this drill while pushing right hip back
ruclips.net/video/Z3WRJIYky10/видео.html
Love it. As always, thanks for the responsiveness.
I just want to point out that the front on views of Tiger 9:34 and DJ 9:50 clearly show the spine tilted away from the target, not towards it. Their left shoulders are down toward the ball though.
Hey Bryan! The spine should not be tilted TOWARD the target.
You start in a few degrees of side bend at setup
You stay in a few degrees of flexion at top
But the left shoulder goes down on both sides
@@CogornoGolf Oh I agree. I only mentioned that because the examples shown do not fit what Saguto is showing.
What does extend the spine as you point the shoulder at the ball is done??.You mean the cervical spine????
thoracic
Did it for a bit but then started to reverse pivot. I prefer to get the left shoulder way behind the ball like Arnold. I feel if I do that it forces me to get through the ball better. Obviously that’s just my personal experience
All good! Want to keep your head in the circle you started as the lead shoulder goes down
ruclips.net/video/TMMCQz3nlmw/видео.html
Hi guys, would this be the same with driver?? Or do you want the driver more flat and around?? I have Improved my irons but lost my driving! Lol I have even hit the ground before the ball with driver!! 😱 thanks
Hey Scott!
The idea is to replace the amount of forward bend with side bend...so since you are standing taller (less bent over) with driver you will have less shoulder down
I believe we discuss that in some of these
ruclips.net/video/Z3WRJIYky10/видео.html
ruclips.net/video/5PyZRor9RGA/видео.html
@@CogornoGolf Thanks Eric! Really appreciate it! 👍
Nice job, great information as always, love it
Thanks, John!
Do you recommend this process using any iron/club? I see in the video you guys are using long irons
Hey Tyler!
Yes...you need left side bend (left shoulder down with ALL clubs)
More with shorter clubs, less with longer clubs.
You are trying to replace your forward bend amount with left side bend at top
So wedge you are more bent over at setup and driver less bent over. Wedge more side bend than driver.
Talk about that here: ruclips.net/video/Z3WRJIYky10/видео.html
@@CogornoGolf thanks for the quick response. That’s very helpful!
In the downswing, does the thought of pointing right shoulder at the ball work in symmetry?

Hey Joel!
I would suggest your solution resides within
1. Using video each swing to confirm what you really do compared to your feels
2. Be willing to exaggerate what FEELs like 1000x too much
there no real secret to it...exaggeration. Allow left knee to go down and forward to tilt the hips help
Here is more that may help with some cues:

ruclips.net/video/itMUrdHkHm4/видео.html

Left shoulder down really means left side bend resulting in left shoulder down? Do you commence backswing with LSB and rotation at the same time? Does one start fractionally before the other? I'm thinking maybe start LSB first to get motion correct for left shoulder down
I would think of it as the left side bend, rotation and extension happening 0-100 through entire backswing
That will not happen exactly that way for everyone but that's the 101 version.
it`s very useful tip , Tom is good
Thanks, Ken! Tom is great!
