Thank you very much . Your shoulder and rhythm lesson just clarified 50 + years of trying to give me a simple way to perform a swing sequence ! 5 stars ! Thanks !
What a brilliant video. Congrats and thanks!! How to make the complex simple. I found tha by focusing attention and awareness on the lead shoulder allows so many other movements to automate, Great stuff
I know this video is quite old but I just had to comment and give thanks to Chris for explaining this in a way that clicked for me. Watching my swing on video I can see that just keying on a subtle dip of the lead shoulder has also massively improved my lower body weight shift as well. I'm taking a nice divot ahead of the ball for the first time ever! Thanks, Chris!
Hi Chris, this is Deepak from India. I learn a lot by watching these tutorials, particularly those hosted by you, Adam Bazalgette and Clay Ballard. I am 70, and have been playing golf for 30 years. My compliments - your clarity of concepts, communication skills and attention to details are unmatched. I have - as a result of these tutorials, brought my handicap down by 4 strokes, and am playing the most consistent golf of my life. Thanks
This is one of your best ever tutorials Chris!! I'm working on this at present, focusing on getting left shoulder under my chin through takeaway and then triggering transition with that down and fwd move whilst tucking my right elbow into my right side at the same time as that down and fwd move!
Chris. I found your site and this video. Like many, on the downswing I could not get out of my way due to incorrect left shoulder. This was a game changer for me. Thanks
Thanks Chris - the up-and-left concept for the left shoulder on the way through could be the answer to my prayers and see the end of my chronic pull-hook issue. I will let you know..
Thank you for this instruction. Just tried it at the range and hit some of the most straight, powerful and effortless shots of my golfing life (49 years). Love the way you explain and demonstrate.
This tip hit me at just the right time. Yesterday, I was striking the ball great and I realized I was feeling a different "resistance" sensation in my lead shoulder at the top of the backswing. I just focused on keeping that feeling with every swing and the result was that I came down into the ball for a solid stike. This video explains what I was intuitively trying to feel! Thanks!
Good presentation. my wife and I have long struggled with our transition. This has cleared the move up. We are looking forward to implementing the changes at the practice tee.
Your Videos are on point! very very very good! Simple, with perfect facts and perfect explanations! I think you are one of the best teachers on youtube!
It's especially important for me given my swing tendencies. Thanks again, keep up the great work and I hope you and your family are safe and ready to get this golf season under way!! @@ChrisRyanGolf
Hi I looked up loading lead shoulder, came across your video ,it finally connected . No more shanks and more distance with down and round with lead shoulder. Thanks
Hello Chris! Thank you so much for your excellent series so far on body mechanics. Definitely the kind of material I can work on even in my bedroom. FYI...at 5:51, you point out a video on hips you did (which I've seen) but not link to for your audience. That was a great video! 😁
Thanks again Chris for these tips. The way you explain the different elements in the swing is fantastic. I hope you get out on course soon. We have finally been allowed back this week in Australia
Really enjoyed the structure of the lesson... I think it was the 101st time for me and well timed with some changes I’ve been looking to make. Thank you 👍
Chris, I got to tell you man, just found this channel last week. So far the content is good. But I noticed you do something that very few RUclipsrs do which I think is fantastic. The length of your videos are so much more manageable since they're short and to the point that I feel like I can actually watch something and remember it. Way too many people go into way too much detail and it's so hard to follow. So thanks for dumbing it down for us amateurs!
Great video lesson. I took it to the range today and my ball striking improved dramatically. I did have a 1/3 of my shots start on line and then turned left 10 yds. Path correct, face closed. I'll check grip. Overall ... great stuff
Chris - really great stuff. Can do a video that focused on the left shoulder and the Driver - I assume that are some small differences to get in mind. Thank you.
Hi Chris, I've taken lessons recently and really struggled with the concept of the shoulder turn. This by far the best and simplest explanation I've come across. My backswing feels a 1000% better, can't wait to try it, thank you so much.
This is fantastic, as it's really a shoulder focus on one of your previous videos where you describe how the shoulder, hips and knees move down initially in transition to the downswing. I've found that focusing on my shoulder moving down really helped my swing and game in an amazing way. Thanks so much for all the instruction and videos!
Thank you Chris. I've also noticed that by implementing your instructions here, it also help me "load" up on my right leg much more. Thanks as always for your time and tips.
Great video, I used to stand way to close to the ball until I had a tip to stand slightly further away, I worked on the same technique I was using and with practice went from 8 to 3 handicap with no major swing thoughts, nice and simple video to improve technique.
nice one chris , informative and precise. chris could you possibly do a video on how to keep the club shaft on plane in the back swing ranging frrom pitching wedge to driver please
Thank you Chris, another great lesson. I’ve been following you down here in NZ, for over a year now and you have had a significant impact on my ability to breakdown and be more aware of my swing with the consequence of my handicap coming down three shots; just two to go before single figures! You are without doubt, an excellent coach and I wish you all the very best of luck for the future. If you ever get down here, we have some pretty awesome courses and would love to show you around my local Kinloch course! Keep doing what you’re doing, keep well, keep safe.
This video was my lightbulb moment, l have concentrated on hips and not shoulders, so hips leading but torso left behind leading to thin and fat shots. Great video Chris.
This video pairs excellent with the other you did recently on the hips clearing. Your videos have great visual aids that set your instructions apart from the rest
Hi Chris I have your videos and very useful they are. I came across this today and I am delighted. I am 87 years old and still searching for my old movements. This one has memories at Lo Romero Costa Blanca 75 gross just getting left shoulder under. BUT I did not know why. This explains it THANKS is there any way I can keep or obtain this video for constant reference (poor memory). Michael Fearnehough
After 20 years plus of golf, I have only just found out about it being more of a tilt and back in the shoulder. I have wasted so many good years loosing 15 to 20 yards a club. Yes that's right, that's how much I have struggled so thank you for the mental reminder of what I should be doing. I try to think of a backswing more like those amusement ships that back and forward at great speed.
HI Me again- what is not mentioned is how the lead shoulder moves and what in particular causes it to move. It seems to me there is this connection between the movement of the lead shoulder and the movement of the lead thigh. In particular as the lead thigh moves back so tool will the lead shoulder move down. Great way to start the down swing to make room for rotation through the swing.
Chris I’m a slicer and I want to give an inside detail on what I feel and what screws me up and see if I might be onto something. I set up to the driver, tense especially in shoulders usually gripping tight. I let the trail shoulder take over in the swing and I come over the top, I never get my hands down, my club does shallow but I think we swing the shoulders flat. I tend to try to force my lead arm super straight and kind of flexed out. I’ve been thinking I never pay attention to the ball socket system of my lead shoulder. So I started making my lead shoulder limp I swing it back with just enough tension to get it back then I just let it go and allow the body and shoulder to clear up and left and swing my limpened arm. It’s a complete different feeling than I’ve ever had
Chris, this is really good but in my efforts to have the club "drop" in the downswing I am now really feeling like I need to "Disengage the shoulder from the chin" as the left knee and left hip unwind towards the target (use of ground force). I have played competitive golf for over 30 years and have just learned what it means to get "depth" in the back swing. I now can get in a decent position at the top but from there, If I just think my left shoulder goes "down and around" from the top I feel like my hands will continue to move out away from my body. Yours fall so beautifully in that little drill and there is a bit of disengagement of the shoulder and chin as you go down and around and then of course, back up. This is alot of where the magic happens or, in most cases, doesn't. It is a complex blend. cheers.
Great video reminded me of a book called 'The Golf Secret' by Dr H A Murray which has been somewhere up in my loft for more years than I care to remember. Thanks for getting me back into this concept of what should happen in the golf swing...
I tried this today at the range and had some decent success with it..... Where I struggled (in the thinking part at least was the middle section)...down and back was fine, and the final up and round was fine but I couldn't think of a way to sequence the middle part. I guess I must have been doing it but couldn't register it nor cope with trying to put the 3 parts together. That middle transition piece I need some work on and I need to have a way of 'thinking' it into the move. Just now it 'feels' like there is not enough time to for it in the sequence...but there obviously is.
Interesting video... I have a fundamental question : For the "down and forward" element, is the "down" part generated by (a) bending the lead knee (or both knees), (b) bending at the hips / hunching or (c) something else? Thanks for your efforts in these crazy times,
Great stuff, Chris. Happy I cam across this post, it has really helped especially step#2. Question, do pros also make these shoulder moves in their golf swing? best, Phillip (Canada)
Very helpful video.. I for one tend to move my lead shoulder to the up and in action during transition rather than with down and forward first. But here is my question: Is it down/forward or forward/down ? And does the order matter? Thanks
this clears a large fault of mine on the back swing i get too much on the inside and either make a slice right or hard pull left. Oh love the sound of the new target sheet thanks Chris for yet another great tutorial
Hi Chris. Great video. In the downswing transition move, should the arms and hands be passive/stay up as the lead shoulder moves down and forward or should the hands and arms start to move down in sync with the lead shoulder?
Great advice Criss been practicing this , I've always had a flat shoulder turn . I think the slight move to the right happens just before you complete the backswing and the up and to the left as you start down . Dont know if that's correct just what I feel. Cheers Criss
Excellent lesson that relates exactly to my faults. The only snag is that being a senior golfer I don't have much separation between my hips and shoulders. With my hips static I can only get about 15 deg turn. Is there any "cheats" I can adopt to mitigate thus?
Good video Chris. The first move down escaped me for years! Even with this my club comes up too vertical after impact in my follow through. Kind of a wet noodle finish with both my arms bent and over my left shoulder rather than powerful one I see with pros and low handicap players with both arms extended. Any suggestions?
Chris, as someone who struggles with my lead shoulder popping up very quickly in the downswing, this is something I definitely need to work on. One thing I am noticing is that I really have to exaggerate the feel to get that shoulder to go down in transition. Is it acceptable for the body to dip while doing this movement? Thanks in advance.
Chris, You refer to the second move as being to lower shoulder and go forward to add pressure to the left foot. But, ass can be seen from the face on view, the effect of this move is to align the left ankle, left knee, left hip and left shoulder. t That is the perfect position to allow the left shoulder to make the third step--up and in. But, more importantly, because of this alignment, as as long as you maintain the spine angle, the left ankle, left knee, left hip and left shoulder can rotate in UNISON into and through impact to a full finish.
Hi Chris, To get greater speed one would have to swing to the right. That is only a problem if one stops the upper body rotation as on swings to the right. But if the swing to the right is matched by a body rotation to the left, the ball will go straight with much more speed as the sling shot or catapult motion comes into effect.
Damn chris, the down & back concept came in clutch. Had been wondering for ages why cant my head stay perfectly still whenever I rotate my body & shoulders
Thank you very much . Your shoulder and rhythm lesson just clarified 50 + years of trying to give me a simple way to perform a swing sequence ! 5 stars ! Thanks !

These lockdown sessions have covered everything I needed. The split screen is really good visual guidance.
Chris, great instruction video. I use your drills and say loud the important movements!
honestly, one of the top golf videos ever made. amazing

Great Video Chris! In my opinion, this is one of the most underrated topic in golf. Thank‘s a Lot.
Thanks Rudolf, certainly not discussed as much as i think it should be

Great demonstration, Chris. I will work on the drill you introduced.
one of my go to videos....thank you Chris
Great clear instructions thanks Chris. Best practical illustration I have seen. My swing is starting to feel like a golfer.
Hi Chris, delighted with this video,it clarified a few issues for me and has given me some things to work on.
I like your instructions better that others.
This single video has gave me the concept I've been searching for. Thanks
Thanks Jamal
Driving the front shoulder down at the beginning of the downswing is THE secret move ... in my opinion. GREAT VIDEO!!!
Chris, I commented on this lesson last year as well...still the best single lesson I've ever seen. Thanks again for revisting it.
Thanks Bob and yes I agree, important to get this movement correct 👍
It's especially important for me given my swing tendencies. Thanks again, keep up the great work and I hope you and your family are safe and ready to get this golf season under way!! @@ChrisRyanGolf
Excellent demonstration/explanation! Thank you. Step #s 2 and 3 really help to fully rotate/pivot thru to the finish.
Great illustration Chris

The transition and finish is where I went astray with the covid break ... can't wait to get back to the course again.
Your videos never fail to impress! Fantastic explanations, and easy to follow drills. Can't wait for the weather here in Canada to get golf ready!

Like a sling shot. Applying centripetal force as your shoulder rotates which slings the club on an outward or right-path.
Super lesson. I’ve been working on this for months.
Thanks Colin

Good video Chris. The first move down escaped me for years! Even with this my club comes up too vertical after impact in my follow through.
