Would like to see some videos breaking down the "over the top" from the inside style of swing of Bobby Jones, Sam Snead, Arnold Palmer, Abraham Ancer, Hovland and lots of others old and new. Dragging it away low and inside then lifting it and almost throwing it like skipping a rock release where shaft on downswing is perpendicular to torso. And shaft achieves right arm intersection before release. Appears over the top but hits all the perfect downswing markers. And appears to exit hard left after impact. Would love to see this with the tour swing animations. Thanks!!

Hi guys just found this video - I’m guilty of trying to steepen my backswing by getting that left shoulder down - trying to fix the issue of a too flat backswing ! Was hitting ball reasonable before implementing the left shoulder down, now strikes are awful 😫 This is best video I’ve seen on this issue with simple explanation - thanks very much, oven the range to practice the new move 😁👍 All the best, Ken, London
A very common exercise couches give to their students: Club across your shoulders, rotate, and the club should point towards the ball!!! Other important concepts that causes players to introdce unnecessary strain when practiced incorrectly are "width" and "depth". Thank you guys for giving us these clarifications! 👍
We seen a lot of guys grimacing a grunting trying to get that club across the shoulders pointing at the ball. YIKES. The backswing doesn't need to be that difficult thankfully 😊
Great video and drill. I am curious what is the ideal angle (in degrees) of the shoulders at the top of the swing? Use a six or seven as the example (I realize the longer clubs will have a less steep or shallower shoulder turn at the top). Thanks for all of the great instruction and explanations which are backed by great research by you guys.
When thinking about swing plane and grip what is your thought on different planes and grips for different body types and build… I think Mike Adam’s has a series on this.
You guys are great on detail that all can understand. If possible could you show using a steering wheel backswing. Professional verses a amateur. Or a tennis racket the handle shows the rotation left or right. I believe most of us amateurs rotate the wheel the wrong way and get stuck on the downswing, causing all sorts of problems. Very interested on hearing you views on this mussel memory method, or in simple terms in the back swing do we turn or rotate the steering wheel to the right or left and do we try to rotate or turn the wheel right or left on the down swing. Why I ask after a bone marrow transplant I lost my mussel memory. PS I'm a swinger not a hitter.
Thanks for another great video. A question on the shallowing vid. When the arm lowers and connects with the ribcage how long does it stay connected thru the rest of the swing?
Great video. Question for you guys about this. I struggle with the sway at times. Does the right foot planting make this move easier or is it something else?
Could you guys do a video on optimal position that the left arm ideally bicep is in relation to the chest. I’ve been pretty consistent on a one plane swing. I’m trying to incorporate a feel in my swing in relation to lead arm and rib cage without having to do any dropping of the arms anything to that extreme.
Thanks for all the info. Is there a video on hand position and shaft angle (not shaft lean) through the down swing into impact. The left arm stuck or off the body would effect it as well as early extension. This is something I’m confused about

Love the channel! As follow-up to your absolutely brilliant hip rotation videos, would love to see your views and analysis on the inclination of the hips and how it relates to rotation (and maybe some pros vs ams). Thanks!
That’s not something that normally has to be felt. Your spine is angle forward at setup, if you turn your shoulders 90 to that angle, you’ll have the right amount of up with your trails side👍
totally confused now.....based on other RUclips instructors....been trying get shoulder pointed down more for over a year....this looks more natural....so will definitely try....
Lead arms moving the club and not the shoulders in the takeaway, and lead arm too high across the chest in amateurs. Been working on this myself. If my bicep feels lower on my chest my shoulders turn better if I lift the arms it’s done
Great video. Makes huge sense. Here's a question, I have a choice for a lesson with my local pro or to get some online tuition from AMG. I'm returning to golf after a long hiatus but still relatively young (40) and fit. I'm 6'3 and a shade under 200lbs in y'all Yankee weight units. It's tight fiscal times these days so I can only choose 1. I'm in the process of building a backyard practice range so I can practice twice a week and play every 2nd weekend.
Realized I was doing this incorrectly, has been a game changer since I started to address it. A really helpful tip I have found is putting a glove under the left arm pit, sticking just out the front. Then, if your posture/setup is good, turning while keeping the glove from falling, helps make a proper turn. Can also do it on the course by balling up your sleeve under your arm. Really has been a game changer, and something I fall back on when thing's are getting out of sync.
Awesome explanation of the golf swing. I watch all your videos and for first time really starting to understand the golf swing movements. Question. I live in North Georgia, Do you have training near me at any times in the year?
hey guys, how much shoulder/chest rotation or shoulder opening do the pros have at impact. My understanding is it is not really that much but actually more shoulder tilt and side bend? Do you have any videos covering this.
Great video! I Had some of my best range and golf rounds last few days. More power and distance. My Back is still a problem working on conditioning, I am fit but lower back lumbar issue. Toe touches are the worst for me. Mobility otherwise is excellent for my age,54. I have a question. Why would 90 degree feet, no foot flare help my swing. I have flared my feet in hope of freeing up my hips with minimal results. Feet 90 degrees to the target line appears to have transformed my swing. Actually less strain with no flare. Would love to hear why this may work for my body type, movement tendencies. I experimented and really strike the ball better with squared feet. Thoughts?
Wry tough to answer without seeing how you move. We typically recommend a small equal amount of flare in each foot. Foot flare is often WAY over done. Don’t change what you’re doing if it works 👊🤓
Hey guys could you do a video on how the pros use their left wrist in the down swing, and is it right that they increase the flex in the wrist in the down swing ,cheers guys
Thanks for the reminder, I found you on Instagram as well but you should include your 'Gram link in the video description. My two young kids are starting PGA Jr League golf this evening if the rains hold up. I'm hopeful it will turn into one day being able to golf with them like it did for me and my dad. I've used some of your videos to show my kids the basics of the golf swing. Thanks for all the excellent content.
Handshake thought on takeaway instantly transformed my swing! Thanks, I can now move on to tweaking things instead of finding root cause of my terrible swing.
What about the downswing? Is it better to feel the right shoulder move across or the left shoulder pull back? That might be a good video. Right side vs left side feels. I am often torn between left and right side feels for moving the pelvis on avoiding early extension too.
A question: I have worked on having my arm pits like inline with about an inch inside the toeline of my shoes. Now I heard George Gankas claiming that leads to standing up? But im not standing up. Not moving my head back or not being able to hold my buttline. Whats your opinion?
I just keep thinking about how Nicklaus, Snead, et al. always talked about getting the shoulder under the chin. Nicklaus was particularly adamant about that being his checkpoint for "completing the backswing," although I agree that's more a term of art and perception, in the context of how the swing is understood now (with recentering and transition going on well before whatever a person sees as the "top" of the backswing). But the point is, every great player in the game's history would've thought it was pretty much nonsense to try to keep the lead shoulder around the same vertical plane it was (face-on) at address. (Some of you may remember Carl Lohren's "One Move" thing, which helped a lot of players. For those who don't, it had to do with making the lead shoulder movement the first and controlling movement in the takeaway. Right from the start.) What amazes me is how much modern instruction involves these assertions (dip the shoulder, point the shoulder at the ball, keep it in the same space, "don't turn your shoulders") that make their way around the internet, various YT teachers pick them up, things become part of the collective jargon, and hardly anybody says "wait a minute, maybe Nicklaus and Hogan and Snead, and a pile of others too, weren't _totally_ clueless about the golf swing." If a teacher is going to tell people to totally ignore something those guys said was important, to me it goes without saying that this puts a giant burden of proof on that teacher. But so many people just eat up anything they find out here now. That's the beauty of what AMG does -- it's all quantified, no guessing. One addendum here: I do think it's important to distinguish between what "head still" or "head steady" means and what it means to have the back of your neck, or the top of your spine, moving around very much during the swing. Nicklaus agreed that the best understanding of "head still" was more like "quiet" or steady, not rigid and tense and avoiding even swiveling around the neck, and that good players could have a little counterbalancing going on (which in the old reverse-C days meant a slight downward and backward movement). But a lot of what's tabbed as "head movement" in modern pros is really the swivel of the front side (the face) with the top of the spine as an axis. If you put a cursor where the back of the neck is (or would be, looking through from the front) on the players in this video, you'll see hardly any movement on the backswing. The excessive movement that can give players a lot of trouble is really more the swaying and tipping of the top of the spine. And even with players who move off the ball a little -- Faldo comes immediately to mind, although most of his movement is also swivel -- it's pretty remarkable how steady that gets once the player has really set in on the downswing. But still, as even Nicklaus used to say, you don't want that steadiness to come from tension and an effort to kill movement in general.
So, if the tilt is baked in from the spine tilt at setup, we still are going to have to extend the spine along with turn? I would love to see more detail on the extension of the spine during the swing, thanks.
Does it mean that Ben Hogan was kind of wrong with his pane of glass swing ? As I was trying to point my shoulders at the ball for last year and half .. Or I got Ben Hogan wrong? thanks
@@openstenosis can’t really comment on what a feel might actually produce. It’s ALWAYS better to let the correct movements dictate the feel. But taking the shoulder to the ball isnt a good idea.
Great video. A related kind of question though.....I've got a buddy whose target side shoulder runs into the side of his face. It never gets below his chin. or around as in these videos. It seems to me he needs to do something to get that shoulder going down. Any thoughts on what I should have him do?
Have him do the left handed hand shake to see if his shoulders turn around his spine. If they don’t that what he needs to work on. He can do it with a club across his shoulders 👍
I understand the concept but I’ve suffered from a flat shoulder turn where my hands are too low (much like your handshake analogy). How do I overcome this.
Best in the business. Another great video. More instructors would benefit from watching your videos and teaching the content. Their players would benefit even more. 👍🏻👊🏼💯
Until I saw this video, I was making the downward move. Not any more. But I have to be honest, I was making the downward move TO GET MY SHOULDER OUT OF THE WAY SO I COULD KEEP MY EYE ON THE BALL during the backswing. That's all! Otherwise, I would hunch. I'm 6'1" so I always feel like I need to be closer to the ball!
@@AthleticMotionGolf I'm 65 but I can still point my back toward the target without actually closing my stance. My swing is slightly shorter in that I can't go all the way to pointing my clubhead at the target but pretty close. I'm built like Mike.
This is good pick. What I have discovered: Doing this lead shoulder down move cause: - Excessive lead knee bend, hard to recover in the downswing - You do not get proper pressure shift to the trail leg heel. Pressure tends to go trail leg toes, trail leg heel might be in the air, no ground contact!
I’m curious about controlling strike from toe to heel. I’ve been too much in the toe which is a weak strike that cuts distance and makes a fade more difficult. I’m talking everything but driver
I’ve always struggled getting my hands deeper in the backswing. Just thinking about this topic, would the lead shoulder being too tilted toward the ball in the backswing contribute to shallow depth at the top? Seems like in theory it’d be way harder to move your hands deeper with a really steep shoulder turn.
The hands only move a few inches across the body, depth comes from turn. Anyone we’ve seen who is trying to get their shoulders steep, does so at the expense of not getting their lead shoulder across enough (turn). What you said is something we see every day.
I am not lying when I say that I saw a video a while back of a fairly popular internet golf teacher who was telling golfers to point the shoulders at the ball. I think I wasted days of practice trying to do this. Not a good idea, it’s uncomfortable, and it’s just dead wrong. Why would you want to do something in your swing that absolutely no successful tour pro is doing? Good video, guys, and a reminder for me because I think my shoulder turn was getting too steep and consequently I was not getting enough depth. Carry on gentlemen.❤
A feel I’ve been taught is to feel like you’re staying in posture and not cheating it but feel like you drag the club on the ground on the way back or reach for the ground
It’s tough to comment on a feel without seeing the movement. We recommend starting with the correct movement then letting that create the feel for you.
Could you clear something up for me. After watching a few professionals using a steering wheel on the golf back swing. Some say turn the wheel to the right like your turning a car to the right. And some some say turn to the wheel to the left like your turning the car to the left. In your model pro verses us mere mortals. Which is correct and why.
Uhhhh… as someone who has always attempted to get my shoulders steep in the backswing, this is making me smack my forehead wondering if that’s the exact reason my ball striking has absolutely sucked this year. Now I need to get to the range…
I think/suspect one of the reasons we try to steepen the shoulder plane is to steepen the Angle of Attack. I experimented with it for a while because I'm very shallow (-2+2 with scoring irons), but all it did was exaggerate an 'over the top' move.
As a dude built like Mike, I really would like to see the big man swing lol. What Tour pros do we have to learn from besides Ernie Els? Sepp Straka? Anything different for us to consider?
You're big boned too? 😊 Not really anything different as far as concepts and movements go. All that would still be the same. Big guys swings tend to function better with more of a compact backswing that doesn't get too loose and armsy at the top.
I really hope you guys are multi multi millionaires. These last two months watching your videos have helped me tremendously. Yesterday is shot my lowest round ever with a 3 under 69. Too bad I can’t afford to come see y’all for a real lesson. 😂

Love the channel! As follow-up to your absolutely brilliant hip rotation videos, would love to see your views and analysis on the inclination of the hips and how it relates to rotation (and maybe some pros vs ams). Thanks!
Thank you so much You guys helped me a lot.❤❤❤❤
Thanks for the video. How do you turn the lead shoulder and maintain the feeling that your trail side extend upwards?
That’s not something that normally has to be felt. Your spine is angle forward at setup, if you turn your shoulders 90 to that angle, you’ll have the right amount of up with your trails side👍
This was an awesome video, I’ve been working on this and I gotta say it’s going great. It’d be great if you did a similar video for the downswing 😏
Another eye opening video! What would the be the continuation to finish with lead shoulder? Maybe follow-up video :)
Absolutely a follow up video is in order 🤓
My new favorite channel Thankyou guys
totally confused now.....based on other RUclips instructors....been trying get shoulder pointed down more for over a year....this looks more natural....so will definitely try....
Gents, do you have a video that shows how to raise the grip through impact to improve ball striking contact?
Try him out and see what you think. I guess it depends on who you think can help you more.
We used to. Now we’re full time down in Orlando. Let’s us know if you ever make it down this way 🙂
hey guys, how much shoulder/chest rotation or shoulder opening do the pros have at impact.
Love it!
Another great video-- great instruction!!!!!!!
Thank you!
What about all the views of Victor Hovland and Will Zalatoris and their near vertical shoulder planes on the downswing? Thanks
The shoulders aren't near vertical before impact for anyone that we've seen.
I couldn’t help but look at how textbook tiger woods grip was. It’s beautiful
This practice drill also makes the re-centering movement comfortable, natural, to me.
What do you think of Carl Lohren shoulder move? That the golf swing starts with the left shoulder moving forward and everything else will follow.
Thank you, simple and effective
Glad it helped
With exemption, Fred Couples in old video talks about his hands and arms backswing almost done with shoulder still not rotating.
What about the downswing? Is it better to feel the right shoulder move across or the left shoulder pull back? That might be a good video. Right side vs left side feels. I am often torn between left and right side feels for moving the pelvis on avoiding early extension too.
Good suggestion. We’ll do a follow up for the downswing 👊
Great video! I would imagine downswing and through is just a reversal. Recenter, lower arms and right shoulder works across?
👊😊
Do you have a squaring the face face drill?
Right from the start.)
What amazes me is how much modern instruction involves these assertions (dip the shoulder, point the shoulder at the ball, keep it in the same space, "don't turn your shoulders") that make their way around the internet, various YT teachers pick them up, things become part of the collective jargon, and hardly anybody says "wait a minute, maybe Nicklaus and Hogan and Snead, and a pile of others too, weren't _totally_ clueless about the golf swing."
If a teacher is going to tell people to totally ignore something those guys said was important, to me it goes without saying that this puts a giant burden of proof on that teacher.
Just focus on keep the head relatively still. No need to feel like you drive the lead shoulder down on backswing. It moved across
Does it mean that Ben Hogan was kind of wrong with his pane of glass swing ?
As I was trying to point my shoulders at the ball for last year and half ..
Or I got Ben Hogan wrong?
thanks
This is interesting…could the “feel” of shoulder down to ball help the over rotator where the hands/arms get too far behind body in backswing?
Voice audio has been really weird the last couple videos. Sounds garbled. Great instruction, as usual. Thanks!
4:36 that highest hand there is DJ lol....
I understand the concept but I’ve suffered from a flat shoulder turn where my hands are too low (much like your handshake analogy). How do I overcome this.
Best in the business. Another great video. More instructors would benefit from watching your videos and teaching the content. Their players would benefit even more. 👍🏻👊🏼💯
We appreciate that! Glad they are helping 👊🙂
My lower back is fused, how do I come back down to make square contact and follow threw with chest facing target ?
Until I saw this video, I was making the downward move. Not any more. But I have to be honest, I was making the downward move TO GET MY SHOULDER OUT OF THE WAY SO I COULD KEEP MY EYE ON THE BALL during the backswing. That's all! Otherwise, I would hunch. I'm 6'1" so I always feel like I need to be closer to the ball!
I feel you. How would you rate your mobility in the upper body?
@@AthleticMotionGolf I'm 65 but I can still point my back toward the target without actually closing my stance. My swing is slightly shorter in that I can't go all the way to pointing my clubhead at the target but pretty close. I'm built like Mike.
Should I keep my chin up to allow left shoulder to move under it? I am broad shoulder.
This is good pick. What I have discovered:
Doing this lead shoulder down move cause:
- Excessive lead knee bend, hard to recover in the downswing
- You do not get proper pressure shift to the trail leg heel. Pressure tends to go trail leg toes, trail leg heel might be in the air, no ground contact!
We’ve seen all the negative “side effects” too. The good thing about this is it’s physically easier to do the right way 🙌
Have you all or would you do a video for chipping around the green using gears, etc?
We’ve done an entire short game system with lots of gears and force plate data. It’s available now in our AMG+ membership.
From that position at the top, does shoulder stay behind ball during transition?
The end of the transition is when the club starts down (top of the swing), so yes👍
Tom Saguto comes to mind...
Great video and content
Glad you enjoyed it 👊🙂
I am struggling to blend moving left shoulder back and to recenter
I’m curious about controlling strike from toe to heel. I’ve been too much in the toe which is a weak strike that cuts distance and makes a fade more difficult. I’m talking everything but driver
Is your spine pulling away from the ball through impact?
I’ve always struggled getting my hands deeper in the backswing. Just thinking about this topic, would the lead shoulder being too tilted toward the ball in the backswing contribute to shallow depth at the top? Seems like in theory it’d be way harder to move your hands deeper with a really steep shoulder turn.
The hands only move a few inches across the body, depth comes from turn. Anyone we’ve seen who is trying to get their shoulders steep, does so at the expense of not getting their lead shoulder across enough (turn). What you said is something we see every day.
Thanks. Makes sense then. If you’re simply tilting down more than you’re turning, hands aren’t going to be very deep at the top.
@@DeronSizemore You got it
That power breathing outro transition though 😂
Regardless, amazing video. Subscribed and hooked!
Spot on comments. Just not necessary to do in order to have a great swing.
A feel I’ve been taught is to feel like you’re staying in posture and not cheating it but feel like you drag the club on the ground on the way back or reach for the ground
It’s tough to comment on a feel without seeing the movement. We recommend starting with the correct movement then letting that create the feel for you.
10:44 getting psyched. LOL
One mo' guilty charge for me, lol! Keep the good news coming our way, thanks again!
Trends come and go in this game....that is the absolute truth!
Reminds me of that old commercial... That's the truth, Truth!🤓
Yep, there are much better ways to improve angle of attach.
@@AthleticMotionGolf Do you have a video on that? I searched but couldn't find one specifically reference AoA.
Great video - def an aha moment
I really hope you guys are multi multi millionaires. These last two months watching your videos have helped me tremendously. Yesterday is shot my lowest round ever with a 3 under 69. Too bad I can’t afford to come see y’all for a real lesson. 😂
Absolutely awesome! Great job incorporating the concepts into your game. Nice playing 🙌
Do you guys have Moe Norman in the data base? I'd love to see a video on that!
Unfortunately Moe passed away before this technology was available. What would you be interested in seeing?
@@AthleticMotionGolf Thanks for responding. I am trying to learn his single plane swing and although his swing had some unusual features, he did a lot of what great players/ball-strikers do and I'd be curious to see the similarities and differences. Not sure how your tech works but any way you can rig something just using the video footage that's out there? Thanks again for all you do, your videos are great.
