This is also a big lightbulb moment for me, I have always been trying to get open. Once I understood that the arms lower and the pivot brings them around, my rotation is automatic
This has to be one of your best videos yet. Great explanation of the relationship and contributions of the arms and the body to achieve the best results. Like most of us i thought the hands were much further advanced that you showed, at impact. As you say, just an illusion from the 2d front on camera angle.
I've been a long time fan of Pete Cowan, and this jives identically at what he teaches, along with loading the shoulders and putting pressure into the ground to generate power when you rotate correctly. It was game changing for me when I understood his approach and how much noise there was in my previous swing and how simple a good swing really is (but very hard to understand and produce). One other thing that you didn't talk about (but I think was instrumental in helping me visualize it correctly) is the position and flex of the right hand through the swing and how important it is in stabilizing the head through impact. Also, the split hand drill and cross-hand grip drill also really helped me get my club in the right spot on the downswing as it transitions into rotation.
I was going to say this video is pure gold, I think I would go a step higher and say platinum... As it pertains to my swing, and what I've said over at the shallowing video, what Shaun said about the arms basically being finished coming down and then adding the pivot to bring them and the club around, I cannot believe how true that is. I think so many of us have been led to believe otherwise, especially in search of the holy grail of shaft lean. The Gears and 3D data are literally the best thing to happen in regards to understanding a proper golf swing, and what the best pros do. I am so thankful you guys have access to this and can break it down for us. 🏆👍
Eureka! At last a video that makes sense to me. Impact from the trail side! Completely misunderstood what I was trying to do until I saw this. I’ve had lessons in the past about stopping the flip but have never had it explained to me this way with the 3D graphics. Brilliant video.
What a great video. The segment at 11 minutes is like a super medicine--it cures so many things, Better balance, better hand path, better finish, better compression. Took 2 or 3 swings to get into this position the right way and after that the results were great. I stopped feeling so awkward at the end of the swing and the ball flight was not too high and not too low and really ripped. Very nice work--thanks.
Trail side impact makes sense, never thought it that way. It was hard for me to get the club around and in front of my trail leg even as a 4 handicap. I added right side bend to this equation and it all came together since I needed a trigger because the golf swing is only about 1 second. Thank you, best video I've seen out there in the ether.
I still cant get enough of this video. A good takeaway and pivot, combined with these moves equals the path of least resistance. Its so easy to apply the club to the ball and not hit fat with these concepts. I'm left handed and golf right handed so I have went through periods where I didn't hardly use my trail side and I didn't even know it! Now I know I can't make a fairway without it.

Guys, this is a terrific video, with 3D to demonstrate. I really like how you explained the 3 parts of this video. I love the part where Mike discusses if the camera was moving to show the view from continuous angle versus a still camera not being able to do so, causing a false impression. Great job!!
Guys, this is by far the best and most all encompassing tutoring I have come across! When you talk about the issues that emerge when we follow this 'myth' of shaft lean you are literally describing me! I have just won my match today using exactly the ideas you are proposing in this and other videos. I have particularly benefitted from this video because it has helped me to stop flicking and swishing at the ball in an attempt to get to the 'right' position! Before I saw this video my shots were going dead straight, but 30 degrees left! Today I had lots of pars and two birdies by simply putting this teaching into action. And you are right by the way, the right way to do it is easier than the wrong way that so many teachers are suggesting. Thanks again, if there is any more teaching you are doing, please sign me up!
OK, wow, the big reveal for me was club head behind the hands until below the hands AND the swing occurs on the trail side of the body! Had to go into the garage and try a bunch...seems fantastic and very different from what I have been doing. Can't wait to take this to the range! (and then the course). It's 100% what I needed to hear and now learn! Thanks!
Was in a pretty big slump and couldn't hit a good iron shot to save my life. Been watching your videos and they are all so comprehensive and you are never contradicting yourselves. Especially the videos about shallowing and releasing the wrist angles have made my iron game so much better, I was always thinking i had to keep the full lag-angle in my wrist and never release them which only made me mess up, as well as making it harder for myself. Getting that natural release is amazing, I loved the drill with doing the "quarter follow through", lifting the right heel, then pressing back and swinging back. I combined that with the drill where you only swing through with the left arm to let the club shallow naturally. BIG THANK YOU!
Thanks Guys!! I've been playing golf for going on to 8 months.. I've played cricket my whole life and I had terrible cricket habits for Golf!! Hands going to the ball, head past the ball and so on.. Thanks again for the great content backing it up with FACTS!! MUCH APPRECIATED from my side.. I'm loving the game of golf thanks to you guys. Ive also qualified for my clubs league team!!
Probably the best instructional video out there. Mike, Shaun - - does the pro put stress (bend) the shaft at the start of the downswing? In great swings the clubhead seems to drop vertically at the top before routing out. How should the force/motion be directed along the shaft on the start down? Thanks for your great work.
@@geraldcarroll300 great question. We put a tiny camera on the grip (so it wouldn’t change the bend properties of the shaft)of an x-flex shaft and ask golfers to go through their waggle routine. Just a waggle makes the shaft bend several inches with no intent to stress the shaft. The shaft is going to bend at the with zero intent from the player. It’s also bending in a plane that is useless to the player at impact. You answered your own question 🙂, the force is directed along the shaft.
This is probably the best explanation of the golf swing I've seen. I've been working on this move, and I'm pretty good with it up to the mid irons. I'm still struggling with driver. What's the best ratio of arm drop to rotation with the longer clubs? A video on how much/fast the arms drop in relation to the pivot would be appreciated. Thanks guys. Love the videos.
This is the single best 15 minutes of internet info on the golf swing I've ever seen. I've watched a ton of it and the majority of it is garbage. This video debunks so many incorrect thoughts/concepts. In my opinion, you guys use a lot of super high tech stuff to simplify things. What originally turned me on to your content was your philosophy about how important it is to be in good position just before transition to make the swing more effortless. Great stuff!
Thank you for this video. I would like to request a video that dives deeper into specifically the releasing of the wrists as you go through impact. I think it is an essential part of the pro swing and would do great as a follow up video!
You guys are phenomenal. Right after watching this video, I picked up a club and tried this. Completely different feel but the lightbulb went off when thinking about the trail side. I’m heading to the range tomorrow and give this a go.
Been watching a few videos on shaft lean as I seek better compression. Nobody has covered it to this detail and when you try it out, it just makes sense.
Crazy, i watched this video at least six times over the year, then when I studied the top down view at impact, i noticed i am not in the same position with my hands and right knee. Now i can hit on the trail side and "bomb" my irons. I gained +20 yards with my mid and shorter clubs. Launch angle down six degrees. Awesome video!
That was the best explanation I’ve ever seen and put in a clear, easy to digest way and visualise. Thank you for amazing content - I’m a subscriber and have liked the video.
You guys are amazing at taking what seems so difficult and making it simple. And it is unbelievable how we as students can get in our own way. Thanks for the roadmap.
@AthleticMotionGolf I do have a question where shawn talks about the clubhead "tipping over" in the downswing. Question: Do that just happen as you release it or is this something that you can "help along" 🤔
What a amazing insight as to how the swing and timing of the hands and their impact location behind the center of the body occurs. What a game changer tks
You guys are the absolute best! You have eliminated some many useless and harmful swing thoughts for me. I would love to get a lesson with real feedback of what my body is doing, it would have to be exponentially easier to correct, when it’s tailored to a specific player. I am sure I’ve destroyed good parts of my swing, thinking I wasn’t in the right position, etc.. please keep posting these awesome videos!
@@AthleticMotionGolf now if I can just tie the upper body movements with the lower body. I look so uncoordinated whenever I am thinking “lower body”. I was a college pitcher, never thought about my lower half, it just came naturally. I spent all evening on the range, working on it tonight.
Holy moly. This changes 50 years of fighting the downswing. I think you are saying if you force your hands/arms forward, you will stop your rotation or hit it left if you don't. Understanding that the hands only need to travel to the trail leg seemed to eliminate the feeling of having to rush the downswing. Hit the straightest, purest shots of my life with one practice session. Rehearsed getting the hands to the trail leg, then rotating. In the real swing it seems more like one fluid movement. Thanks guys. This was big.
You guys should be on the golf channel on cable TV. I just started to figure out what my arms should be doing with my rotation and this video literally showed what I was doing right. Keep up the great work.
I'm one of those guys who bounce around different RUclips channels looking for good simple instruction. Came across your channel a few nights ago and I'm going through all your videos. Great content, and Shaun fair play to you working with your dad. Could never do that 😂
There is an excellent channel CHAGOL TV and with over 45 years of trying to understand the golf swing I'm hitting it longer and straighter. My handicap is 10 and it was 18
All I needed to hear was that impact happens on the trail side of your body and it just clicked. Thanks guys. I just added about half a club and my trajectory lowered considerably.
Wow! May be one of the best videos to date. 2:05 is EXACTLY what I’ve been struggling with for the past year. Consistent left of target. Shaun lays it out - in my mind I thought I had to bring my hands across the body with the hands forward to get the shaft lean. WRONG…WRONG. (a little Charlie Murphy). The hands have no where else to go but left…I’m going to invest on this lesson with more emphasis on the hands dropping correctly and rotation to create the shaft lean versus the arms incorrectly trying to achieve this.
I just started understanding this and have been trying to implement it. I saw a coach online pushing the club head back behind during the swing an it clicked. Club head should be moving away from the ball allowing the club face to come from the inside.. I still don’t do this very consistent but my approach shots are getting more consistent. Keep practicing with a purpose.
Guys, I must thank u a lot. I've been following you for a while and must admit sometimes your videos felt a bit too analytical and scientific but this one to me was an eye opener.
Excellent explanation with new and very worthwhile information. Best explanation I’ve ever heard about the downswing and proper way to achieve forward shaft lean. Really helpful.
Such a good video. Had a wrist injury and this has reminded me of the feeling I had pre injury and starting to get my strike back. Do you recommend same feeling with the driver in terms of drop hands and pivot?
UPDATE - I tried this at the range yesterday and then I played 9 holes. Your advice help me achieve my best ball striking day ever with my irons. My putting sucked, anything from mid irons to wedges was life changing. The long irons, driver I still need to work on, but I finally learned that I was rotating too early in my DS, so waiting to have my hands down around my waist and right pocket and then turn, help me strike the ball way more consistent and pure.
@@AthleticMotionGolf No kidding. No do-overs in life, which isn't the greatest. Heck, I even quit golf for most of the last 30 years so better information plus sticking with it, I'd probably be good enough to suck by now.
It's unusual to get this amount of description of what is really happening and why these things happen. Most teachers say do this, without explaining why, or the sequencing of movements. I have only just come across your channel and immediately realised that my right elbow was way too far behind on the backswing. This particular lesson has taught me another mistake I was making, in getting the club head too far outside half way through the downswing, thinking that all I had to do was rotate my arms in order to square the club face at impact. Yes, it did square the club face, but I had no shaft lean at impact, so I had to try to manufacture it myself, which led to inconsistent ball striking and loss of penetrating ball flight, which also meant loss of distance. Brilliant channel and thank you for explaining everything in a way that makes sense not the average human.
Your videos are absolutely awesome! So informative… Thank you so much! How about a video on competing forces in the golf swing…centripetal versus centrifugal?
Thanks this helped me clear up a lot concept wise around impact! I really loved those hip vs hands diagrams at setup, impact and follow through. I would to get one for each time of shot! Aka same diagram in the video but for a chip, pitch, approach, drive!
So building on the recent videos... max backswing speed is at about parallel to ground, momentum takes it back into the turn and when club is whipping down towards impact there's not many milliseconds from parallel to impact or from hands at right knee to impact... is there any particular feel of speed or grip pressure behind impact we can focus on for consistency? I was taught there must be acceleration. AMG is the best! Appreciate all you share...
That all makes sense. I'm heading to the range. What about driver? Hitting up on the ball, bottom of the swing arc before impact, I would think no shaft lean and hands at or slightly behind ball, yes or no? Thanks
Just had a lesson with my coach today where we were focusing on reducing the swipe with the hands. My body was stalling out over the ball and my hands then were finishing the swing without rotating my body through. Terrific video today.
My shanks and early extension come from “tipping out”. This great video has made me realise my arm swing needs to happen sooner and sequence it better with my rotation to stop it. Thanks. 4hcp.
Awesome lesson! You literally fixed my swing and eliminated ALL those swings thoughts... Just one, raise the arms going back, lower than as you pivot. SIMPLE!

The Golfmythbusters strike again. Thanks for making my Life as a hobby Golfer so much easier. Greetings from Germany.
Our pleasure!
Wow! This is gold! This video combined with the amazing shallowing video is 🔥 🔥 🔥 Thank you guys so much!
Thank you!!
100% ! Started in January and that video changed everything.
Awesome and so easy to understand the way you guys explained it so clearly great work
Wow this perspective is incredible. Well done guys. Such an eye opener.
Great video. My question from yesterday which I do not see here anymore was answered. Have learned so much from you guys. Thank you.
Guys, I must thank u a lot. I've been following you for a while and must admit sometimes your videos felt a bit too analytical and scientific but this one to me was an eye opener.
Sometimes the details need to be there to learn what really happens. “Swing your swing “ doesn’t really work in 99.9 percent of golfers
Thank you for always including a drill @ the end of your videos. Appreciate y’all
Another great video! This is one of the few channels that show how the arms really work.
It’s kind of a big deal 😊. Thanks for watching 🙏🏻💯
Excellent explanation with new and very worthwhile information. Best explanation I’ve ever heard about the downswing and proper way to achieve forward shaft lean. Really helpful.
Thank you!!
Wow!!!
I'm back to this video again and just picked up a new nugget...trail side impact. Who knew. Thanks for the insight.
this might be your best video yet
👊🤓
Mind blown!
We’re the same age and I wish I could take a mulligan on about 25 years worth of the stuff I tried to do 🤦♂️
@@AthleticMotionGolf No kidding.
@@TheChrishoughton love it! We’re glad you found us 👊🙂
Your videos are absolutely awesome!
We can do that for you 👍
Hands down best golf swing video on the internet.
Thanks
Awesome explanation. This cleared up several things.
Incredibly insightful, as always. Really improved quality of impact. Thanks
Just had a lesson with my coach today where we were focusing on reducing the swipe with the hands. My body was stalling out over the ball and my hands then were finishing the swing without rotating my body through. Terrific video today.
I took a bunch of pictures at a Mens US Open, I was in a grand stand 30 yards in front of tee, the pics reinforce this video, thanks AMG
Another gem of a lesson fellows, thanks a million for sharing with us all!
You’re welcome !!
The best golf channel. Thanks
You made my day with this video! It's so interesting and I'll give it a try - thank you so much and keep going!
My shanks and early extension come from “tipping out”. This great video has made me realise my arm swing needs to happen sooner and sequence it better with my rotation to stop it. Thanks. 4hcp.
OMG this corrected so much of my misunderstanding! Thank you for the good work!
🤯this video clarified many things that I’ve been confused about!!
Awesome lesson! You literally fixed my swing and eliminated ALL those swings thoughts... Just one, raise the arms going back, lower than as you pivot. SIMPLE!
A really useful video and explanation that I have not seen before.
