This video hits me right in my soul - hip bump/slide with no rotation is my primary swing flaw. Also, completely unrelated: I put the alignment stick through the belt loops to practice this in the living room just now. Forgot it was there when I went for more coffee. And got stuck in the doorway 😂😂😂
I'm a tired old Marine trying to improve my swing well enough to enjoy time with my son who is an excellent golfer. I've watched more videos online that I'd want to confess to but this may be the most overall significant video I've ever watched. This video addresses my problems of slide vs. turn, early extension, over the top downswing, lack of hip rotation and shoulder spin. I will watch this video more times than I will ever admit. Thank you very much for your efforts in composing and posting this video.
Chris, this has to be one of your best ever golf instructional videos. Very timely also for me. I was trying to understand the movement into impact and this drill with the alignment stick through your belt loops to simulate the hip rotation while at the same time demonstrating the shoulder pivot motion while staying on plane was sheer genius. For me it helps connect many missing dots around the entire release of the club as it approaches impact. Including links to the need to move from forward bend into Extension. Thus enabling that elusive pressure / weight forward, hands forward / shaft lean downward strike on my irons giving that great compression onto the ball with ball then turf connection. Supported by the trail shoulder pivoting downward as the hands exit left. Amazing 🎉
Chris, I can’t thank you enough for this video. The way you explained this just made absolute sense to me when I watched this last night. I went to the range today and had the best session of my life, and in the videos I took to review my swing it actually resembles a golf swing! It feels amazing and should be the start of some real improvement. Cheers
This guy and Rick Shiels have helped me go from shooting high 90s to low 100s, to hitting mid 80s in about 2 months. Took a long break from playing golf, and now getting back into it. Love you guys.
FANTASTIC VIDEO!!! I never fully appreciated how the trail hip is supposed to rotate UP and then, after the hips rotate DOWN, the lead hip rotates UP, all in one smooth, continuous motion - at least, that's how I now see it. Mentally I had mistakenly broken my swing up into too many discrete pieces, and and as a result my hips weren't moving properly, but now they are. Thank you!!!
love this!! You have such a smooth swing. One thing that helps me on rotation is to push my front leg down forcing that hip socket back. That helps my rotation. This is a great video!! I was the guy who tilted back when throwing those hips lateral. Man, where have you been all my golf life?! Keep up the great videos!!
Great lesson Chris, I watched your right hip very carefully and it sort of moves on it's own little swing path. I've never thought too much about my hips, they just went along for the ride with my shoulder turn, but moving the right hip on it's own little swing path, moving down, around, and up makes it much easier to get back to the ball. I don't have to manipulate my posture or stretch my arms out to the ball in the downswing. Thank you.
Chris, Brilliant, straightforward drills and reference points all around. Many aspiring and experienced golfers, including yours truly, are searching for the correct downswing initiation and rotation sequence. You've nailed it in a manner others have missed. Thank you for creating a video which will enhance our ability to master this move. Cheers!
Great video. The first part about the angle of the hips was the answer to a problem I've had for a long time. I would rotate through, but with my hips remaining level. This often led to me staying to much on my right side and not getting a proper weight shift forward. This also caused me to tilt my upper body rearward as I started down. This is exactly what I needed to see
OK…… UR a miracle worker now ! LOL ! Hopefully it stops raining here in the San Francisco Bay Area today so I can take your encouragement about my hip turn 2 the range! LOL! Thanks 4 your help !
Really well explained. I’m a low hc player but occasionally have the ‘hip bump’ causing a block /push slice. Two other pro’s said I need to make sure I ‘cover the ball’ and feel I’m hitting left for a full rotation. Your video explained the issue fully and has help me with drill to rotate properly and stop the hip bump. Please keep the videos coming!
Thanks Chris, this is very timely since I've been working on exactly this to overcome my hips stalling out and causing me to early extend. I'll be taking my alignment sticks to the range and doing these drills!
great instruction Chris ,the movements you show are for effortless power through the strike no need to rush the shot, using your body as you describe is the key. clear and informative video many thanks.
Chirs, your videos are constantly amazing! This one is also exceptional! You explain what must occur in a manner that is easy to follow and understand. Thank you!
Well, I'm off to buy some alignment sticks as this video is exactly what I'm doing wrong when I video'd myself. Everything is 'perfect' right up the club becoming parallel to the ground on the downswing. Then at impact I'm vertical over the ball and shoulders are 'up' exactly like his example in the drill #2. Thank you very much Mr. Ryan, I can say without a doubt you are the best teacher on RUclips.
Chris, the clarity of your visuals and your common sense descriptions are key to helping a viewer see and understand the concepts, movements, and bodily feel of proper golf swings. I’m an avid subscriber-and an improving golfer. Thank you.
great Video I agree, I just think the last movement while pulling the alignment stick out of the ground could have been shown in a slomo replay, it was quite a fast move.
wow the final feeling drill element is absolute gold finally think i understand it now ................doing it may be something else but great vid chris thanks for sharing
You really nailed it Chris - the first time i really understood clearly the importance of the final "extension" move and how to work on it. Thank you so much !
Chris, you are an amazing teacher, you explain everything in terms we golfers can understand. I can’t wait to try these drills, plus you have one of the most beautiful golf swings I have seen, you can tell how much you love to teach how to improve golfers golf swing, I watch the other Utubers golf Instructors for entertainment, I watch your Instructions to learn how to get better, to me that’s the biggest complement I could give
Thx for the drills. I’m struggling to understand that left leg and left hip movement up and away. A popular TT’r says it’s like jumping backwards. The pros like Justin Thomas seems like they are jumping off the ground. My swing feels violent already without trying to jump away from the ground/ball. How do I do what you’re drills showed but still have a smooth swing like your last swing in this video?
Brilliant video. Some people swing like a robot because that's how their instructors told them. But they never understand the reasoning behind all that sequence. My understanding is that, physically we need to rotate the hip first while the arms stay put (i.e. don't swing yet), the hip rotation will automatically provide some speeds to the upper body and thus the arms, then the arms can follow, and at least, the hinges on the wrists left loose to whip the club. Easier said than done. If you observe great players doing it, they all do the same exact sequence. Most beginners really wants to hit the ball hard. And they ended up using a lot of powers from their arms and started pitching the club instead.
Great video. Of those three movements, which are also needed to hit a wedge 50 yards, 30 yards and 15 yards? These distances are like a parachute when your plane is going down.
Thanks for this, really great tips and i think your second point here about the shoulders and hips separating ay be key to my over the top swing. Ive always struggled and never been able to fix it despite lessons, ill mention this at my next lesson (i know how much my instructor hates students that know it all from youtube vids tho lol). But seriously this makes a huge amount of sense, and just recorded myself and i definitely turn my shoulders with my hips 👍🏻
Hey Barry, it’s one of the reason me golfers don’t rotate the lower body as the upper often follows, this drill is great to get the right feel though. Hope it helps
Great stuff Chris, this will definitely help fix my pulls. The 2nd part about leg straightening is great becos i find the word rotate used in your first part can lead to hips rotating on a horizontal plane (bad). Left leg straightening that opens the left hip is very often overlooked.
Everything you explained up to @11:10 is GOLD. However, I'm prone to "Coming Up " out of the shot is my nemesis ! I am scared to death to try that Leaping Move ! Help ....
Hi Chris, great informative video as usual. I noticed your right leg stayed pretty straight on the start of your downswing, is this something that has changed for yourself
You have no idea how much this helped me. I finally know what I'm doing with my hips. Helped me hit my best score ever this weekend. Finally hitting my irons with some consistency. Keep up the great work
great video.... i was never aware of the 3 movements and yes you are right about the "bulb" or "ahah" moment - it happened to me... but can i make a suggestion: can you pls produce a video with the same content and combine all 3 movements into one continous flow using an iron.. and then a running explanation as to when each move starts and finishes (or transitions) to the next movement? thx...cheers...
Great video as I had the “shanks “last couple of weeks and could not correct. I was ready to quit, even took a lesson to no avail. This video got me back on track. I can only assume my shoulders were following my hips around leaving the club face open is my guess. Thanks

Een fantastische video instructie om uit een ‘vormdip’ te komen. 😉🏌️♂️👍
Hi Chris. Another great video! My biggest problem is a straight pull. Primarily, I think this is because my shoulders follow my hips in rotation but I can’t seem to stop myself from doing this! Do you have any drills I could use to try and help me, please?
Great video an we'll explained as always Chris. This is something my coach has been talking to me about as I don't turn my shoulders enough through my down swing because I'm almost stalling with my hips once I've shifted my weight forward causing me to cast the hands a bit
Great video but I’m confused about the first part - the shift left in transition. How do you do this without your head going too far forward? With the driver especially it’s a killer for me
Hi Chris. Having seen a couple of your videos, I have just subscribed to your channel, convinced of its superiority over others. I do have a question that I have not seen covered-it has to do with the back swing. I am in the process of making my swing with irons more vertical, like yours, and its working well. The one thing I have great difficulties chasing is the top of the back swing. Since I come from a more horizontal swing, I was constrained by my agility, of lack of. A more vertical swing gives me freedom but I find that when I raise my hands to the level that you do, I lose control of the swing, rhythm and all. In fact, I think my hands are high but they are not. Can you point to a drill or a video you produced that covers issue?
Chris: I thank you for a fabulous video. I personally need clarity on an issue. You did not mention this but I think you did it; @ P-5 if you had a chair behind you is it important that left buttocks return to it while right holds ? Again thanks
I got 2 things out of this drill that I wasn’t aware of. The first was keeping the left hip low. Then the drill of pulling the alignment stick out of the ground using both legs.
When you say that the lead hip (left) should be lower than the trail hip in transition, how long should that condition last? I am trying to get side right side bend in the downswing and I cant do both. Any advice?

I feel like this video has given me a golf epiphany! Concise, to the point. Thank you!
