    Dude I LOVE this review. I've had fantastic success with the CCI segmented (quiet, mini mag, and supervelocity.) They work GREAT for dispatching farm pests. Drops little stuff quicker than any other 22lr I've tried. But because they don't retain a solid base, you are left with nothing to get the deep penetration needed for "possum +" This is the best of both worlds. A double tap gives you 2 exit wounds and EIGHT internal wounds. Imagine 4 or 5 rounds of this. If I can find some of this i'm stocking up to keep the farm guns loaded. Never know when your farm gun might get repurposed into a predator or self defense role. Thanks Pat. This. Made. My. Day.

    • @m17glock35
      @m17glock35 3 года назад +2

      exactly my thoughts and experience with the CCI . this Winchester performed WAY better than i expected . i will probably still prefer the subsonic cci segmented for backyard duties (squirrel,rabbit and invasive bird species ) because it DOESN'T have the solid core . For out on the farm though this would definitely handle possum + much better .

    My guess is they are running a faster burn powder in that case. Achieves about the same velocity average in a rifle, but in a short barrel it's probably reached peak pressure much sooner.
    Good stuff!

    • @HanstheTraffer
      @HanstheTraffer 3 года назад +1

      Probably but it also depends on the depth of the crimp. Tighter crimp means more complete burn also.

      @exothermal.sprocket 3 года назад +1

      The typical heeled bullet on 22lr requires a crimp, but outside Aguila, I haven't noticed much difference between the tightness/depth of one brand to the next with rimfire.

    I have been an ER nurse for 30 years. I have treated or been involved with hundreds of gunshots. It's my opinion those segments traveling in different directions in the body along with the deep penetration would be deadly. I would not have a problem defending myself with the silver tip.

  • @timallen6035
    @timallen6035 3 года назад +3

    This is not the first video that I have seen about this ammo. Autumn's Armory used some in a video. Anyway, definitely looks like it could be some interesting ammo for critters. I won't go so far as to say that I would use this specific ammo,or any 22 lr for personal defense. I suppose I could see 22 lr as a last resort or it's what a person has for personal defense. It can work. It just wouldn't be optimal.

    So winchester makes a 37gr segmenting bullet also under the "Varmint HE" label. Same 3 petals, 1 base advertised. Appearantly when gel tested, those did NOT segment like most say the Silvertips do. Did not find that out until I bought a couple 3 hundred. I have no gel, have you tested the Varmint HEs? I may square up some jugs and at least test them on water, but if they don't it kinda stinks. The 3 pedals for shock and a base for penetration just seems like the best multi-purpose varmint/predator/incidental SD round for 22lr that one could make. Its a new lot maybe they have worked the kinks out because the Varmint HE has been around a few years but both are labeled 37gr and same specs on paper

    In my experience with this ammo, I'd hit cans that were side by side, due to fragments. 2 cans, 1 bullet

    It would have been nice to see the original HV 1435 fps segmenting version compared to the "pistol" silver tip. I like my 32 gr CCI segmenting even though I don't get the groupings I would like. I have never shot a critter but have turned many apples into sauce with them. Great video. Thanks!

    IT says "power to defend." Not "Suitable for hunting." If it cannot stop a 200 pound man, it is not going to stop a 1200 pound bull or 800 pound bear. It is not for "defense" from animals.
