  • You Should Stockpile These 5 Calibers of Ammo NOW!
If you're wondering whether you should stockpile ammunition in your home and personal defense arsenal, the answer is "YES".
    ********************************************************************
Ammunition has already become a precious commodity. Gone are the days where you could walk into any sporting goods store and find rows upon rows of ammunition on the shelves at affordable prices.
Today we are gonna take a look at the calibers you’ll primarily want to invest in, especially if you’re going to be stockpiling ammunition for a future SHTF or grid-down scenario.
    .22 LR
The .22 caliber Long Rifle rimfire cartridge is commonly considered the best all-around survival ammunition. The rounds are produced by nearly every ammunition manufacturer and are available for most makes and models of both .22 caliber pistols and rifles.
    9mm
The low cost and popularity of the 9mm round make this an excellent choice for preppers and survivalists. So reliable is the 9mm round that it’s the official round of the United States military and is quickly becoming the standard for law enforcement, as well.
    12 GAUGE
By far, 12-gauge rounds are some of the most accessible rounds worldwide. Birdshot, buckshot, and slugs can be used for bird hunting, home defense, and big game hunting purposes respectively, making it a very versatile round that’s worth stockpiling in all three configurations.
    5.56 NATO
As the primary round issued to American military servicemen and women, no prepper should be without a gun that fires the 5.56x45mm NATO round.
    .308 Winchester
The .308 Winchester is a great alternative to the .22LR and 5.56 for hunting and all-around survival purposes.

I've always stocked at least 1,000 round of each caliber for each firearm I own with the exception of .22LR which I have at least 10,000 rounds. Then about three years ago, when ammunition was cheap, I made an impulse decision to invest the annual bonus from my job to double up my ammunition stocks. I also added a couple thousand rounds of 9mm even though I don't own any 9mm firearms. Now my ammunition inventory is worth significantly more than than the combined value of all of my firearms.
Sadly, now ammunition is too expensive to waste it plinking. Although .22LR is more reasonable at about 14 cents per round. And steel cased 7.62 X 39 is reasonably priced for a center fire rifle caliber. My SKS eats steel case ammo for breakfast which make for a great bug out / truck gun.

I would stock up on 12 gauge slugs if you are want a 50 cal. A 50 cal bullet in grain weight at low end is 490 grains, a 1 oz 12gauge slug is 437 grains. And the slug has a lot of energy yet at 200 yards. So yes you could consider is a short range sniper round with a big impact. And currently you can get them for about $1.00 each. Very devistating round i have shot through 1 deer and killed a second on as well that was 4 feet apart.

Prioritize. You won't need a ton of handgun ammo. Handguns are useful when you need concealment. That's not an issue when society has collapsed. 22lr for food. 12 ga for food and defense. 5.56 for defense. If you reload, get a 223 bolt gun and a small base die to size the 556 brass. 7.0 gr of Green Dot under a 40 to 50gr vmax runs around 2000 fps and is cheaper and more accurat than any 22wmr ammo. Great 100 yd load for shooting squirrels, Groundhogs, and coons in the head. All of which are very edible. Can also be fired from an AR, but it won't cycle the action. Thinking that you will be able to get ammo in a crisis situation is more wishful thinking than a real option. If things ever go bad, meat will be in the form of fish and small game. Medium game will be foolishly depleted very quickly. 22lr will be the meat getter and 5.56 will be the defender. Handguns are nice for concealment, but that need goes away under those circumstances.
