What happens if you wrap ballistic gel in CHICKEN WIRE?

  • When ballistic gel is hit with a bullet, the gel will expand outwards very quickly. You really can't see it without the aid of a high speed camera. We got quite a few ideas from viewers of different materials to wrap the gel in and show the energy. We also compare two different types of slugs in the process.

Now the clay block needs this same testing. I think the clay block would provide a very aesthetically pleasing view through a few different wraps chicken wire especially.

If you’re going to do a clay block, you need to wrap it in 1/4” hardware cloth (steel mesh) and see if it makes high-speed clay french fries.

If you want to keep the gel block on the table, Target Suite has found an answer. 3 to 4 inches of cushion foam under the block will keep the block on the table. He also determined that applying tape to the top for abrasion resistance doesn't really help because it absorbs heat and the block gets sticky on the bottom.

Glad to see the experimental wraps! I was hoping for the plastic wrap they use at warehouses to hold the boxes on pallets. I think it is a little tougher/thicker than Saran wrap? Also I was hoping you would at least try one time to wrap it around the gel block and table, but that goes against tradition I know! I have some duct tape that is super strong and you can't tear it by hand it has to be cut. I think it has nylon or glass fibers in it. Thanks for going to the trouble to satisfy our needs!!

@@Stevie-J I know the stuff, and it's slightly sticky on one side so you can wrap your pallet top to bottom, sticky side out, then twist it and wrap again bottom to top, sticky side in, and get a single piece plastic sheet that's an exact fit and not sticky anywhere. Then some mug comes along and hauls the edge down to tuck the end in, and part of your pallet of good is no longer wrapped, because eejits gonna eej. Lift the bottom of the last turn around the top layer of goods and fold the end up under that for a nicer result.

Just as a comparison, wrap the gel block in 1/2 inch galvanized hardware cloth, as we don't use chicken wire for our chicken coop, because it does not keep critters out, and is weak. 1/2 inch hardware cloth is stronger and keeps out the critters, but the drawback is OG can't get any of his digits through it.

Weird, the Federal Tactical slugs that I have are 1600fps high brass 1 oz. There's a noticeable difference in the recoil and impact when fired. I don't believe they say "Law Enforcement" on them, I'll check.
    My Saiga 12 loves them.

@@taofledermaus True enough. Mine are Federal "Premium" Tactical Slugs. Trueball, and they do say "Law Enforcement" on the box and claim 1600 fps.
Always enjoy your vids, keep up the good work!

That small "TrueBall " certainly had a positive affect on the expansion of those slugs, and the rebound from Kevlar and back off again from the back of the block was illustrated perfectly from the super slo mo footage . but most surprising was the effect wrapping clear tape around the block , the clarity was enhanced considerably and the block was not to far off that of a brand new block , if You pause at 11:03 you can see the tail end of the temporary cavity clearly through the tape and a huge bubble ahead of it which looks like it will explode out of the back of the block . Jeff is fitting in nicely with a decent sense of humour and a decent eye for a target and good aim and the banter between the three of You is infectious . The chicken wire was exactly as Jeff ( this could get confusing !?) described it and very similar to a corn cob ,Finally here's an idea You've probably already thought of . how about putting a single wrap of tape on the block and then wrapping it with chicken wire, - just a thought .
Thanks Guys & as always I enjoyed this one , Shoot Straight Stay Safe & Well .

I was going to suggest calling it Tactical Chicken Wire..... but, it ripped, so... that's not very tactical at the end of the day :P
However, I demand my money back! I was expecting the last shot to be jeans wrapped in cellophane, wrapped in duck tape, wrapped in packaging tape, wrapped in chicken wire! 😠
    😁

if you do it again you should shoot some holes in the jeans first to see if gel expands through the holes before ripping the fabric. loved this one!

Really good video giving good information to those who are concerned about slug performance.
For future reference may I suggest that you wrap the gel with clear packing tape and chicken wire., the clear wrapping tape will give clear evidence of bullet performance, and the chicken wire will contain it all. This information is gathered from your great video. Thank you!

Wrap it in 24 inches thick of solid lead, to keep the bullets from marking up the ballistic gel.
Also, try shooting in the opposite direction, to insure the bullets don't hit the targets.
That helps keep the targets in good condition.

You can also lightly/quickly pass the flame from a propane torch over the gel to make it very clear.

I usually will use a heat gun to gloss it over. The biggest problem is every time you touch it, it leaves finger prints, any dust in the air sticks to it. So it never looks great once we get out there.
