    I remember tuning into that game to mainly watch EK as he was my 1 pick in my fantasy draft. But I also took a flyer with a mid-to-late-round pick on AM, since he went 1 in NHL draft. I remember coming away from that game very impressed with Matthews, and was so happy for his family, but I saw so many lil things I liked about Nylander and Marner, and immediately added them to my fantasy squad. Not sure if Sittler's record will ever be broken, only 13 guys have scored 8 since 1944. First the team has to score 10 and you have to be on the ice for all 10. I lived in Edmonton during the good years, it's true the fans were spoiled and the building was quiet. They'd make noise if the Oilers ran up the score to 8 chanting "10, 10!" Funniest joke ever? The soccer game ended in a 0-0 tie but the game was a lot closer than the score would indicate. Uh huh!💤

    And then they blew it by trying to speed up the rebuild, signing Tavares to too much money, causing Marner and Matthews’ salaries to be too high, leading to the loss of Kadri and Hyman and Brown and on and on and on and on.

    • @dicksonfranssen
      @dicksonfranssen Год назад +3

      I had the misfortune of moving to Toronto in 68 and immediately drank the KoolAid. It's like an old girlfriend that just keeps breaking your heart. This list is short and in no order. Tavares is paid too much for what was expected. Zach Hyman to Edmonton why? Mike Babcock and Brian Burke were supposed to be the second coming of Christ.
      A 41 year old Joe Thornton signs a one-year $700,000 deal for what, his beard? Most importantly we just can't hang onto great and young goalies. Curtis Joseph and Grant Fuhr were into their 30's when they came here. More recently why did we let Freddy Anderson and Jack Johnson get away? It never ends.

    • @MackDonald
      @MackDonald Год назад +2

      I agree with all that but the loss of Kadri was due to him being suspended two playoffs in a row. He then went to Colorado and was suspended in the playoffs again before finally winning the up with them the next year. But I really liked Kadri and wish we would have kept him instead of getting Tavares. He is a great mix of skill and grit. He did dumb shit at times but so did Darcy Tucker and the fans loved him. Those early 90s Leaf teams didn't win a cup but they often went deep into the playoffs and most definitely didn't get pushed around.

    Main reason I think he's leaving Toronto if they don't do something. First they let his feed man walk, Hyman, then they take his 2nd feed man, Marner and put him on the 2nd line with Tavares.

    The one thing everyone refuses to admit and leaves out on purpose about that debut game is that they were playing the second best team in the Atlantic that year, who went to the semi finals and took the cup winning penguins to 7 games and the leafs were the worst teams in the league the year before by a long shot. I mean sure they were in a tank season but who exactly thinks the 2015/16 Leafs were cup contenders. It was the worst season in team history.
    Ottawa were genuine cup contenders that year. They ended literally 5 wins away from a Stanley cup. Everyone acts like the Leafs should have won that game. Anyone who went in that game thinking, the Leafs got this, is an idiot. Who exactly is looking at the sharks if they play the Oilers is thinking, man they are going to dominate them and that bum Connor Mcdavid.

    not him taking responsibility for the OT goal when the leafs wouldn't have even been close to getting there in without him... only the leafs would find a way to lose in OT with a rookie setting an NHl record against the sens.

    Won’t it be amazing if Matthews could just star in one Leaf playoff elimination game? He has had plenty of chances - instead Wayne Gretzky said where were the Leafs core 4 in this year’s second round & that Matthews & Marner belonged on Milk Cartons as missing persons. Maybe Auston just needs a change of playoff scenery - would be cool seeing him star in the playoffs with his buddy Dubas’s Penguins?

      @@hockeypsychology He is paid to star in those Playoff Elimination games. Why pay top dollar to a student who doesn’t perform when it counts at Exam time, or a highly rated draft pick who is unable to lead his NHL to any form of playoff success?
      At least Blake Wheeler lead the Jets to a Conference Finals. Will Matthews ever get the Leafs to another Round 2 of the playoffs - as long as Toronto overpays players like Marner and doesn’t have a good playoff Core 4?
      It doesn’t look like two smallish wingers for the Leafs core 4 can excel within existing playoff officiating dynamics.

    • @jimlangdon1947
      @jimlangdon1947 Год назад

      @@Gl-my8fw That looks like another disappointment to me. Maybe the Leafs should just reboot & change out 3 of the Core 4 - leaving only Matthews as a Leaf? They probably could get a lot of talent & wouldn’t it be great to see a change where say - JT have a deep playoff run with his old team NY Islanders?
      That would be interesting & give JT finally some taste of playoff success before he retires.
