This Halloween, The History of Rock Crew is diving into Fleetwood Mac’s dramatic career - Not just their famous Rumours lineup with Stevie Nicks, Lindsey Buckingham, Christine McVie, John McVie and Mick Fleetwood, but also their early beginnings with Peter Green. Fleetwood Mac has certainly had a roller coaster of a career. The band began in England 1967 with blues guitarist and singer Peter Green, from John Mayall’s Bluesbreakers. With drummer Mick Fleetwood, bassist John McVie and slide guitar player Jeremy Spencer, Peter formed Fleetwood Mac as a blues band releasing their first album in 1968. Peter wrote the band’s 1968 single “Black Magic Woman” which was later covered by Santana. “Need Your Love So Bad” followed along with their second album Mr. Wonderful. Guitarist Danny Kirwan joined the band and performed guitar harmonies on the instrumental single “Albatross” which became their first number one in England. “Man of the World” and “Oh Well” followed in 1969, the later charting in the US. Their live shows would feature considerably longer jamming between Peter and Danny (Jeremy stuck to performing Elmore James style) as seen on the unreleased live recordings of Live in Boston.
Peter began using LSD heavily, wearing Jesus robes on stage and believed the band should give away all their money. This influenced his last single with the band “The Green Manalishi (With the Two Prong Crown)”. He would quit the band in 1970 leaving them unsure of their future. Jeremy would also leave the band in 1971 and Danny was fired in 1972, though he would contribute heavily to the albums Future Games and Bare Trees. Christine McVie, John’s wife, had contributed keyboards to the band’s earlier albums but joined the band proper on vocals as well in 1971. She wrote for the band as well. With Bob Welch on guitar and several other guitar players coming and going, they kept the band alive touring through the US. Bob would contribute songs like “Hypnotized” and “Sentimental Lady” on albums like Mystery to Me. But he would leave the band by the end of 1974.
While checking out a new studio, Mick heard a track from the Buckingham Nicks album featuring guitarist Lindsey Buckingham. He asked him to join the band and replace Bob, but Lindsey insisted his girlfriend Stevie Nicks be a part of the band as well. With the new 5-piece lineup secured, they recorded their self-titled White Fleetwood Mac album in 1975 which was a surprise success. Christine contributed two popular singles, “Over My Head” and “Say You Love Me,” while Stevie’s “Rhiannon” became a hit and a live favorite with Stevie channeling her "Witch" persona. She would also write the acoustic “Landslide” while Lindsey contributed songs like “Monday Morning” and “I’m So Afraid.” While their popularity grew, their personal lives crumbled. Christine was divorcing John, Lindsey and Stevie were breaking up, and even Mick was getting a divorce from his wife. This tension followed them into the making of their 1977 blockbuster Rumours. The three writers were writing songs about each other. Christine wrote “Don’t Stop” about John, Lindsey wrote “Go Your Own Way” and “Second Hand News” about Stevie, while Stevie wrote “Dreams” about Lindsey. The later would become Fleetwood Mac’s only #1 single in America and recently went viral on TikTok. Christine would also contribute “You Make Loving Fun” while songs like “Gold Dust Woman,” “Songbird,” and “The Chain” (A collaboration between all band members) became classics. Fleetwood Mac became the biggest band in the world.
Their 1979 double-LP followup, Tusk, was very different, led by Lindsey and more influenced by the punk movement. The title track was a hit, and Stevie contributed songs like “Sisters of the Moon” and “Sara” but the album divided fans. Stevie Nicks would release her own solo album Bella Donna to great success, while Lindsey released Law and Order. Fleetwood Mac’s 1982 album, Mirage, saw a hit with Stevie’s “Gypsy,” a tribute to her friend Robin Snyder. 1987’s Tango in the Night saw hits like “Everywhere” and “Little Lies” both written by Christine McVie, but the subsequent tour saw the departure of Lindsey. More albums were produced with members coming and going until 1997 when the Rumours lineup performed The Dance. Christine McVie left the band for over a decade but came back to reunite with The Rumours lineup once last time in the mid 2010s. Stevie forced Lindsey’s firing and the band went out once more with him before Christine’s passing in 2022. Peter Green had also previously passed in 2020.

I think the greatest of the Rumours era breakup songs is Silver Springs, which didn't make it on the album. "You'll never get away from the sound of the woman that loves you" so perfectly encapsulates the dynamic between Lindsey and Stevie, and is, both less mean and spiteful than something like "shaking up is all you wanna do", and, at the same time, way more powerful.

That song just gets better as the decades pass and those two can't seem to leave the past in the past. That line is so powerful because when it was a year since their breakup, it was just a kind of bitter wish. But decades later, it has proven to be oracular. 👄

Other wonderful songs: “Storms”, “Beautiful Child”, and “Brown Eyes”, beautiful haunting ballads from TUSK.
Also remember: “Seven Wonders”, from Tango In The Night, “Diane”, from Mirage, “World Turning”, and “Crystal” from Fleetwood Mac.

So glad I'm so afraid got picked as a bonus track, as it's head and shoulders my favourite Fleetwood Mac song, although I would have picked the version from Live in Boston, as Lindsey's guitar solo on that one is by far his greatest for me.

I love this - & you've almost made me like Halloween! It's very Americanized in the UK now - when I was an 11 year old girl guide in 1969, all we did was carve the odd pumpkin, if you could get one, and bob for apples! Guy Fawkes Night (5th November) was a bigger deal. 1969 was also the year I soon grew to love 'The Pious Bird of Good Omen' - my big sister played it constantly! It included Albatross, Black Magic Woman and, my favourite, Need Your Love So Bad, a Little Willie John song. Thanks for mentioning 'Then Play On', a wonderful LP, often overlooked. 'Like Crying' helped me through a terrible break-up much later. In 1977 Rumours was played everywhere in the UK. I loved it - & still do. I saw them at London's Rainbow that May - such a great gig. My fave cover of Landslide, by the way, is by Stacey Kent. Incidentally, Rhiannon was written pre-Fleetwood Mac - I've a bootleg recording of it on a live Buckingham Nicks CD, introduced as a brand new song in 1974. I agree Lindsey's guitar playing is phenomenal - he draws on so many styles. Big Love live is essentially solo, & quite amazing. I think he alone has captured the excitement of early Fleetwood Mac lead guitar, then shared by 3. In fact Peter Green & Danny Kirwan were spiked with LSD in Germany - neither was ever the same after. Anyway, thank you for your tasteful cover versions, & for doing this. I can now almost forgive trick-or-treating!😊x

My favorite Pre-Buckingham-Nicks Fleetwood Mac song is during the early period post Green before the great Bob Welch joined. It’s Jeremy Spencer’s “One Together” from Kiln House. Maybe because I learned it back in the day in 1972.
As to the great Bob Welch? I prefer his hits in his solo versions, which were bigger hits than the FM versions.

So is this a good place to add my request for playlists?
First I noticed you mentioning Butch Vig on the Nirvana playlist. I love Butch and I love Garbage! They’re one of my favorite acts. A playlist of them is my first request.
So I’ll add requests for ones for my other favorite acts you haven’t already done (Beatles, The Who, The Doors, Bowie, Fleetwood Mac, Nirvana, Pink Floyd that can’t be done.)
My favorite band when I was a band-goon in the early ’70s was Chicago.
Neil Young! He’s another artist who’s never let himself be limited by genre.
U2 dominated my love in the 80s through the 00s.
Wheezer are one of my other favorite bands from the 90s.
Finally I adore the Tragically Hip, I guess making me an honorary Canadian.
So those are my requests. Thanks.

      Thanks for the suggestions.
I do like Garbage, though I'd have to delve heavier into their catalog as I only mostly know songs from their first album.
Neil Young is on my suggestions list.
Chicago, U2 and Weezer can definitely be added.
I'd have to dive more into Tragically Hip's catalog.

Besides the Zappa Playlist, what about Weezer, since we’ve only had one other 90’s band. And like how the Zeppelin playlist focused mostly on 68-71 material, it could be 94-02 or something like that. Just suggestions of course, and great job as always.

The old, original Fleetwood Mac is the best, imo. I read somewhere that the Green Manalishi was written about an acid trip taken by Peter Green. Some of my favorite songs are: Rattlesnake Shake (especially the one from Boston Tea Party, 1970), Albatross, Underway, Oh Well, Man of the World, Dragonfly, Woman of a Thousand Years and Sunny Side of Heaven (these last 3 some of Danny Kirwan's songs).

I’m sorry but the “Rumours” era of FM is by far the worst. The Peter Green Mac is great and Bare Trees and Mystery to Me is unmatched in Mac history. IMO Buckingham/Nicks ruined the band. Commercially successful doesn’t make it better.
