In terms of sheer musicality, Led Zeppelin probably had the most stacked line-up of any band ever. Plant is arguably the greatest vocalist of all time; his voice at its peak had no match, and his sexual charisma became emblematic for rock bands everywhere. Jimmy Page's ingenuity and sensational fingerpicking always stood out, while JPJ is still one of the most underrated musicians ever. Bonham needs no introduction... he is by far the greatest rock drummer of all time.
Plant is nowhere near the best vocalist of all time, but probably suited Zeppelin. Jimmy Page is a great guitarist, John Paul Jones is a great musician and Bonham was a great rock drummer, but lacked the flair of Keith Moon, and of course, lacked the skill of Jazz drummers of the same period, e.g. Elvin Jones, Tony Williams or Billy Cobham. Led Zeppelin were a very talented band, and you might say that they didn't really produce music that reflected their obvious talent, instead preferring to pinch songs from old bluesmen and women. A bit of a waste of their obvious talent.
@@Schwenck66 I don't really understand your point about the band never fully displaying their talent. Claiming their discography is riddled with "pinch songs from old bluesmen and women" seems like a puerile take oan a band with a discog as musically diverse as Led's. They approached scarcely similar musical styles and genres throughout their career. They weren't anywhere near as versatile as The Beatles, but by God, your hot take proves you aren't the least bit familiar with their albums.
I know you're not a fan of the slower acoustic ballads by Zeppelin, but I swear I reach inner peace whenever I hear The Rain Song from Houses of the Holy.
Starting their first album with Good Times Bad Times was genius. It really sounds like the birth of true hard rock was that moment - putting on a record from a new band, lying back and hearing those opening riffs, must’ve been incredible
You should do The Beach Boys, Pink Floyd, Dire Straits, Jimi Hendrix, Black Sabbath, AC/DC, The Clash, The Ramones, Journey, Elvis Presley, or Billy Joel next
1) How Many More Times, 2) Whole Lotta Love, 3) Immigrant Song, 4) That's The Way, 5) Tangerine, 6) Rock And Roll, 7) Misty Mountain Hop, 8) When The Levee Breaks, 9) The Song Remains The Same, 10) Kashmir, 11) In The Light, 12) Ten Years Gone, 13) Achilles Last Stand, 14) Carouselambra.
I generally agree that Plant's lyrics weren't always super compelling. Still, the band was the birth of the "Instrument God," and maybe in the grand scheme of things, that was the point: they rocked so hard that they really didn't need poetry from their lead man to sustain their listeners. You can enjoy an entire Zeppelin album just focusing on Bonzo without having a clue what the words are.
Nice job. So difficult to pick favorite Zep songs, at least for me, because I'm such a huge longtime fan. I agree with you about "How Many More Times," probably my ultimate favorite Zeppelin song. Many, but not all, of the other songs you listed are among my all-time favorites. I would have also included: "What Is and What Should Never Be," "In the Light," "You Shook Me," "Bring it on Home," "That's the Way," "Battle of Evermore," "Bron-y-Aur Stomp," "Black Country Woman," "In My Time of Dying," "Hots On for Nowhere," "Down by the Seaside," and "Carouselambra."
Always enjoy your missives, and thanks. My one-song-per-record list: How Many More Times; Heartbreaker; Immigrant Song; Battle of Evermore; No Quarter; Trampled Underfoot; Tea for One ; All My Love; We’re Gonna Groove. HM: Communication Breakdown; Ramble On; Celebration Day; Four Sticks; The Rain Song; The Rover; Hots On for Nowhere; Southbound Saurez; Poor Tom.
So glad to see in this playlist How Many More Times, When the Leeve Breaks, Tangerine and Ten Years Gone, I've always thought these were underated track from them, and yes you are right, Led Zeppelin III deserves more love than what it gets, great video JT, loved it !!
best band ever, but it's true, as far as lyrics, it's obvious the statement was always the instruments over the message. sometimes it's like they had to add words to already fleshed out compositions. but, oh, the music! unmatched.
Maaan The feelings that you have about Led Zeppelin i feel about Queen. A little bit overrated, later albuns weaker, earlier albuns stronger (my favorite song of Queen is Keep Yourself Alive). My favorite Zeppelin lp is Physical Graffiti and my favorite songs are When The Levee Breaks and That's The Way.
I mean, the lyrics for rain song is pure poetry... that's the way lyrics are beautiful, going to california, over the hills and Far Away.... the lyrics for those sins are pure poetry
Good list. SO glad you finished the main list off with The Ocean: love that song! It and Ramble On are my personal top two. My favourite song left off the list is actually one that many don't like: The Crunge from Houses of the Holy. So quirky and almost uncomfortable with that strange, funky R&B vibe that feels wrong in such a right way. Where IS that confounded bridge?!
My favorite is the definitive break-up song "Ramble On" although I could never understand how we were ending a decade of peace, love, and togetherness with a song about ending a relationship. Was Robert Plant a seer? How did he know about the video game (Mordor: The Depths of Dejenol) which wouldn't be released until 1995?
They are rocking very hard, but not much rolling. ("To be (a) rock but not to roll") Often they sound as heavy played slow kind of blues, with some stuttering hooks that break up the rhythm, not RnR.. Maybe they stole some tunes, but for sure they didn't steal their name. Never been one of my favorite bands as far as the songwriting goes. That first album, it's played indeed with a lot of muscle, but no fun or charm on it for my ears .Glad to hear that there is at least one person who can headbang to some of it.. There are still about 30 tracks I rather like from the other albums..Black Dog, Rock n Roll, Living Loving Maid , Heartbreaker, Stairway, Whole Lotta Love, When The Levee, Kashmir, Over the Hills, In The Light, Down By The Seaside and All My Love should be on my favorite playlist. But i would gladly trade it in for any excelent fifties rock and roll or seventies punk complilation. Or the best songs out of any three Ramones albums..
I feel very similarly about Plants vocals, to the point where I don’t listen to anything after Houses either. I think Bowie, Springsteen, Queen (overplayed to death, Bohemian has almost gotten to Stairway or Don’t stop Believin level. Still good band tho) U2, Prince, Aretha, Clapton would all be excellent videos. Keep up the good work (also, update on 2000s??)
You should rank howlin wolf songs (down in the bottom or smokestack lightnin for me) edit: you can choose wether or not to count the combo album of him and Eric Clapton etc
This night be the list of any band i disagree with the most. It's good tho because differing opinions are healthy i just can't agree with almost any of your picks. Ramble On is fire
@@JTCurtisMusic i fully agree of course. I love your vids, keep going! would love to see a full review on the british invasion or on the mid 60’s garage bands, top 10 guitarists, organ players etc. you are very good on the stuff you do.
Tbh I'm not too crazy about Zeppelin either. Tried getting into them a couple times though (although Going to California is a good song). Maybe this playlist might get me through this time. Gotta do Pink Floyd for the next video...
pfft that's bullshit. 1) he doesn't need to like kashmir to be a "real" fan (by the way being a real fan or a fake fan isn't a thing, you're either a fan of something or you're not) 2) he doesn't have to be a fan of zeppelin. i'm a fan of zeppelin and i love kashmir but i see no reason to make such statements, please refrain from making them, its unnecessary.
If Led Zeppelin were a pure instrumental band, they'd be perfect. I just can't stand the 5 year old girly voice, moaning, and babies of Plant. Hate me all you want but it's true, his voice is just annoying. I absolutely love the rest of the band though

Yes, everyone who sings high outside of Geddy Lee is copying Plant
My favorite Led Zeppelin song is Achilles Last Stand: epic rocking from beginning to end
Same, by far their best
I know you're not a fan of the slower acoustic ballads by Zeppelin, but I swear I reach inner peace whenever I hear The Rain Song from Houses of the Holy.
The Rain Song definitely has some beautiful guitar work on Page's part.
Ten Years Gone is my favorite Zeppelin song, and I'm so happy to see it included on this.
Indeed it's a great tune.
Ten Years Gone is amazing!

The best of Zeppelin is about as good as hard rock ever got, IMHO.
Carouselambra gets a bad rap. It's a little long, but it injects some nice energy into that album
I really like Fool in the Rain specially the drumming, it gets me in a good mood
Led Zeppelin for me is one of those bands where pretty much their entire catalog is worthy of being on a greatest hits album.
I generally agree that Plant's lyrics weren't always super compelling. A Rush playlist would be awesome!
Not really
It would be incredibly short though.
Led Zeppelin I
Led Zeppelin II
Pure Heavy British Blues/ Hard Blues Rock
Uses footage for 8/11/79 Achilles Last Stand while expanding why its a good song
10/10 combo
My favorite is Misty Mountain Hop.
Was definitely considered for this list.
Nice job. So difficult to pick favorite Zep songs, at least for me, because I'm such a huge longtime fan. I agree with you about "How Many More Times," probably my ultimate favorite Zeppelin song. How Many More Times; Heartbreaker; Immigrant Song; Battle of Evermore; No Quarter; Trampled Underfoot; Tea for One ; All My Love; We’re Gonna Groove.
HM: Communication Breakdown; Ramble On; Celebration Day; Four Sticks; The Rain Song; The Rover; Hots On for Nowhere; Southbound Saurez; Poor Tom.
I would’ve added No Quarter from houses of the holy and Fool in the Rain from in through the out door
No Quarter was definitely considered
I love when it switches from the keyboard to the whole band. It is so satisfying and cool
So glad to see in this playlist How Many More Times, When the Leeve Breaks, Tangerine and Ten Years Gone, I've always thought these were underated track from them, and yes you are right, Led Zeppelin III deserves more love than what it gets, great video JT, loved it !!

I'm so happy to find someone who shares the same opinion as I do when it comes to Led Zeppelin. I love your channel, dude!
Maybe Queen next? Or Pink Floyd?
BTW my favourite Zep song is probably Communication Breakdown
Queen do not have a best of list. Possibly a worst of might be worth arguing over, but preferably, lets forget they ever existed.

The first 3 Zeppelin LPs are their best work.
I watched a bunch of your playlist videos no grandfunk railroad, they did a heart breaker tune fits right in
Wonderful JT. And this comes from a huge Zep fan. All the best from Pakistan!
Robert plants voice is gold. The later stuff is just as good

Houses of the Holy came close to being on this list.
very nice list - out on the tiles? agree early - hard to top zepp II but in through the out door is underrated . thanx
Technically it is on the list since they tease it at the beginning of BLACK DOG on HOW THE WEST WAS WON.
No Quarter live at MSG is excellent also.
They are rocking very hard, but not much rolling. Ok, JT. Let's change it up. Let's see you do Moody Blues.

When The Levee Breaks.

The Rover ist my favourit.

Zeppelin or Floyd?

Black Dog is sloppy? Read through the creation of the tune.
The studio version? Sure it's sloppy - still good. But by the time they started playing it live they really found a pocket for it.
No mention of The Lemon Song? Some of JPJ's best work... Never any love for the bass players!!
