This shows my teardown of the power supply of my 2432A and the testing and replacement of some of the capacitors.
I was suspicious that the PSU had poor ripple as a have had a couple of tantalum caps fail, which don't like ripple, this was done as a precaution really, the only behaviour I had noticed was that MAYBE the noise floor was higher than it used to be (but I wasn't certain).

Thanks for posting this video. Picked up a 2432 for almost nothing, but looks like it has been dropped a few times before being stored in grandma's garden shed. I'm in the process of evicting all the black and brown widow spiders from all the nook and crannies. Need to track down a decent schematic before replacing the two .068uF safety capacitors that look like ancient amber fossils.
24:52 that's a Rifa EMI suppressor cap it's most definitely bad they are a replace on sight item in vintage equipment. Luckily they can easily be identified by their yellow transparent case.
They develop hairline cracks in the epoxy case moisture gets in and the plates eventually short out. Producing a big stench and alot of smoke. I've seen new old stock ones in the manufacturer packaging that were never installed and they had the same hairline cracks in them so it has nothing to do with use.
Your 2432 is nearly identical in many respects to my 2440, including having blown the same tantalum caps that yours had. These are fine scopes for everyday troubleshooting and bench work, and can be acquired for next to nothing, well, next to $150 (with shipping) as I found on eBay. Ditto on Bushougoma's note about the Rifa suppressor caps. Replace 'em. Thanks for the video.

I have a 2430a which looks very similar in regards to the component and board layout.
I heard Dave Jones say the Rifa capacitors on the power supply are very dodgy. I have a feeling that the ones I have are bad.
You've given me the confidence to try and replace them.....
By the way the ripple you are getting on your channels look identical to the one I have.

same here, they look identical to the 2430a this video was a Godsend
My 2432 was broken C706 0.068uF X-capacitor made by RIFA.
The capacitor shortage was caused R713 68-ohm burn-out !
Many smokes and bad smells produced !
Also, C806 0.068uF X-capacitor Package was cracked.
These X-Capacitors maybe solvent cracked.
If it was only one noisy channel I would had tried recalibration, and possible DAC gain offset adjustment. BTW these are very nice scopes; they use a CCD-based serial memory architecture to achieve very high acquisition rates.
The recap was more to do with the fact I have had 2 tantalum caps fail in the past couple of years, the first time one failed I had checked the ripple and it was more than I thought it should be, but could be bothered trying to get the PSU out, I thought it was about time I took a look, out of all the caps I pulled only a couple of them were off value by a suspicious amount. I am not certain that the channels are all that noisy, I use my Siglent scope more than the tektronix, I only really use the tektronix when I need to do frequency measurements, as I use its CH2 output to feed my frequency counter.
@@TheDefpom hi. I have a litle of oscilations/pikes in both channels (and change little the offset suddently). The voltages in the PSU are fine (i changed all electrolitics caps). What about tahtalum? wich you changed? Thnaks
I realize this has been quite a few years but I was wondering if the scope still gets regular use and if so, did the recap solve the tantalum explosion problem? In other words, have any more tantalum’s caught fire since you recapped? I noted that the two incidents you had occurred within a very short time frame. I also saw another set of vid egg is on YT where another gent had what appeared to be the very same caps blow as you did in your first incident.
The unit is in storage now, but still working fine when I put it there.

I was able to changeout the X2 capacitors in my Tektronix 2430a oscilloscope. They were a horrible mess!
It seems they are identical in acess and location to your repair video.
I did happen to notice on my board 2 smaller Y2 capacitors tucked away between the big heatsink and a small transformer to the opposite side of the board.
I haven't changed them out. They look like RIFA capacitors .
Would it be wise to switch them out now or let them fail and then remove them?

eebaker69 - those old RIFA caps should always be swapped out, they did well considering the age, but they don’t last forever.

@bri chomsky You will find troubleshooting info for the various errors starting in section 6 page 27 of the service manual, but having so many failures is probably a sign of a main supply failure.
Looks identical to mine inside. The noise your getting at fast time base speeds is similar to my working one.
Simon Spiers - likely the noise floor is normal then.
Yes it looks the same noise as on mine. Don't suppose you know the part numbers of your CCD's on the analog board are? They should be U350 and 450 and have the fins in a straight line.

If you change out caps, shouldn't you re-calibrate everything? Especially if you substitute different values?
+John Jones - probably not required for the supply, but if done to the main boards then recalibration would be a good idea.
Did you fix the noise finally?
It looks like to me that recap has no meaning at all. One must have electronic knowledge to repair it.
Ken Chau - this is an electronics repair, so some kind of electronics experience or knowledge is kind of expected. I wouldn’t be expecting people that don’t do electronics to repair (or even own) a scope.
