    Nick,
Your ability to zero in on the problem child so quickly is a testament to your advanced understanding of these o-scopes!! Outstanding.

Nice repair! Clear explanation of what you did. Thanks for taking the time to post this.

Thanks, getting back into electronics after a long time away. I have this scope and have not plugged it in yet! Working on vintage hifi. Up till now just using a multimeter. Good for voltage but ready to start with signals.

Nice, my 2246 just gave me a volt self cal failed, which I think is related to volts cal signal source(400 page manual). Lots to read, and I never been inside one. Great videos by the way.

As I saw you tested the diode twice to the same direction, after swapping the test leads. (at ~ 6:30)

I saw that too... he swapped probes in his hands, but the red probe connected to the top of the diode both times.

Nice work, mine is having a different issue. But my question is about what kind of battery does that unit has. Mine has a AA, system that just looks out of place. My actual problem is with the self vol calibration. Great video, by the way actually all your videos.

It was enough troubleshooting. Find the problem as quickly as possible. If the caps are not leaking and melting the traces that is more troubleshooting. I would certainly look at every electrolytic cap and make her new again.

Did you replace those three RIFA Y2 capacitors? In my 2246A (same power supply board) have visible external damage and RIFA paper capacitors are known to age badly (especially in countries that are using 220V). Thank you for this interesting video.

Hello I am hoping you can help me out with a 2246 scope. I just bought it from a friend who doesn't use it so I bought it to try and use it.i have some experience reading one but I think I'm having trouble with this one. It constantly blinks while I'm looking at it. Nothing else is blinking just the screen,it's sweeping from left to right. Anythoughts on what my be going on?..please help please.....

Hey I have a tektronix 2246 that is having a similar problem. How could I send you a video so that you might be able to tell me what you think the problem might be. Thanks

    DUALITY REPAIR,
what circuit inside the oscilloscope will draw the horizontal voltage on the CRT screen?
Because there is no horizontal oscillator or vertical oscillator used inside an oscilloscope so how can it draw a SineWaveform on the CRT screen?
The Ramp circuit only controls the electron beam only to the CRT screen.

    • @dualityrepair4770
      @dualityrepair4770  4 года назад

The A/B sweep circuitry and the horizontal output amplifier circuitry is responsible for sweeping the beam across the screen. Essentially, a constant charging current to timing capacitors produces a linearly increasing voltage across the capacitors. This voltage is amplified and sent to the horizontal deflection plates of the CRT. Since the electron beam is negatively charged, the left plate starts the sweep at a positive voltage, relative to the right plate. To move the beam across the screen, the voltage difference between the left plate and the right plate decreases linearly. Once the beam reaches the right side of the screen, the timing capacitors discharge and the sweep starts again.

@@dualityrepair4770 thanks for the help, When measuring a 1khz sinewaveform using the oscilloscope channel#1 input the vertical voltage of the 1khz sinwaveform does directly to the vertical deflection amplifier bypassing the ramp sweep circuit? and the horizontal voltage of the 1khz sinewaveform goes directly to the Sync input to the Ramp sweep circuit? and the Ramp sweep circuit outputs a voltage to the horizontal deflection amplifier? What is the different because a Vertical & Horizontal Plate compared to a H&V YOKE or deflection coils?

    • @rickstadel5285

@@billwilliams6338 The yoke coils in a CRT television tube have 'magnetic inertia', which is put to work producing the HV. Because an 'scope needs to have a wide range of sweep rates, magnetic deflection won't work. The H-sweep starts as a unipolar signal, and begins when the trigger circuit says to, and is typically a simple (fast) voltage comparator. To picture the H-deflection amps (2 of them), think of a Bridge-Tied Load audio amp-pair -- one swings negative when the other swings positive. To think of there being *the horizontal voltage of the 1khz sinewaveform* is incorrect: The input waveform has no *horiontal* aspect -- the horizontal is Time. Sorry I didn't get to this sooner.
