    A must know skill for any gear head. Later, one can move onto various timing tricks to better performance such as modifying timing advance curve and such.

    Thanks! It has been years since I've worked on an 88' mustang and didn't see any marks or the guage that you see in other cars. (Just a line on the balancer and a gauge on a bracker). This helped me very much. ...And the reason for pulling the little plug? It turns off the electronic advance and keeps you from chasing the timing marks.
    I had to set the timing since I moved the distributor so I could remove the thermostat. I though I marked the spot where the distributor was.

    Gets Actron CP9690 code tester. It checks live, record, freeze frame, ABS, graphing, oil change light turn off, MIL light turn off, Ox. sensor tests, codes, and more. It has cables for OBD I Ford, G.M., Chrysler, 2 Toyota, and a cigarette lighter cable. It has a OBD II cable. It also has instructions. It comes in a black pouch.

    Fords are very sensitive to timing. You can mess around with it and get easy performance gains. If the timings off it could be the source of burning plugs up and running rich. Misfiring. All kinds of issues. Now it your running a big cam you'll wanna advance it to somewhere in the 20s. Just play with it and adjust it. See what the car likes.

    HI Joel...I have a 88 Thunderbird with the 5.0 engine. I want to do the basic idle reset, but I do not know what the timing is for a Thunderbird LX with the 5.0 engine. I do not know if it is the same as a mustang as I live in Cal in have to pass smog. I cannot find the reference on line. Do you have a Ford resource where I can find out? Thanks.

    Wondering if you can help me out. I have a 92-93 LX 5.0L Mustang that sat for about 2 years. I replaced the top half gaskets and removed a security system where in which I had to rewire a couple jumpers that were installed for it. After all that was done the car did start up and run. Over about a week the car started to run rough and sputter and was really hard to start, sometimes needing starter fluid. Had the car inspected and it passed inspection but had to tow it home. Would not start.

    Trying this on a 90' F250 and it looks like the same setup. However after loosening the distributor bolt I'm not finding that the distributor is mobile at all. Is there something I'm missing or can these be stuck real good, requiring like a pik and a hammer to move the dizzys?
    Thank you

    • @lucidbarrier
      @lucidbarrier 8 лет назад +1

      +Josh Christiansen It's just stuck. Hit it with penetrating oil and let it sit for awhile. Mark the position of the tip of the rotor to the housing and to something on the car (like the fan shroud). Also, mark a line on the housing to a set point on something on the car. This is to ensure that you can line it back up if you have to man handle it to get it to loosen up. On my camaro, I had to get rubber gloves and work on it and eventually it popped loose. I then reinserted it and lined everything back up. You may be able to loosen it with a rubber mallet and penetrating oil but you have those marks there just in case. I noticed that the shaft of the dizzy was caked with old oil, which is why it probably was stuck.

    I bought a 5.0 mustang lx and the timing was at 0 degrees and I was running good but when I took it took to get smogged I was told it was running too rich and it failed because the timing was off. I had it set to 10 degrees and it still failed and it ran even richer so it failed worse and now it idles weird like if it wants to turn off. Can some one give me some concrete info? It's all stock.

    I had a msd pro distr put in my 88..I have upgraded parts on it and want to bump the timing..So to advance it say 2 or 3 more degrees do I do this with the spout out or in?

    • @TheSamplebridge
      @TheSamplebridge 8 лет назад

      Spout out. The spout activates the electronic advance. Base timing is 10 degrees. With just a distributor I'd set it to base timing. But some more parts like headers and intake manifold I'd bump it a few. Just remember the more advance you get more power but also closer the risk of pinging and eventual detonation.

    First thing to do is check your codes. If nothing comes up, check your oxygen sensors, spark plugs, and air filter. Also clean your mass air meter and your IAC valve. Then do a base idle reset. If its still running rich, you could have a vacuum leak.

      Advancing the timing increases the chance for knock/ predetonation , you need higher octane gasoline to prevent that from happening.
      Which is why 91/93 octane gas is needed if you’re gonna set it to 14 degrees

      Look up timing for your particular engine, in '96 Ford switched to the overhead cam 4.6 liter modular engine.
