That green looks awesome! Rolling at a 7 isn't bad. I played at a course where the greens were rolling at a 13-14 a week ago and that was fast. I think if you get it rolling to a 10 that would be great for a backyard green
13 is faaast! Whistling straights? Yea I’d love to get it to ten. But I think I’ll need to do bent grass. Which will likely happen this fall. Shouldn’t be too much of an effort as the hardest part is getting it level.
@@theperfectcutlawncare how are you doing with watering your lawn in this heat? I'm trying to only water once a week but this week had to do twice because of the heat and no rain. Hydretain really helping me a lot. In addition I've been spot watering the trouble spots and it's been working well for me
Yeah it’s been pretty brutal. Watering just about every other day right now. It just cooks in the full sun. Hope July isn’t so rough for us. But unlikely
I have never seen artificial grass mowed before 😂. Whatever the meter is saying, I am saying best DIY putting green I have ever seen. Absolutely beautiful 👍💚🦸
Could this turf also become a Wimbledon type grass court? Apart from being flat, what else would be required? ..or a pickleball court with Spalding high-bounce balls? Curious if this could be done.
Same grass type as Wimbledon. It just requires a lot maintenance. I have cool season video lawn guide that would help point you in the right direction.
Couple of questions- what is your mow height on the rest of the grass around the putting green in the winter and the summer? Are you also sand leveling that grass? Do you have any maintenance recommendations for the grass during winter compared to summer? Thanks for your time.
Hi Jonathan, the rest of the grass around the putting green is kept at 3 inches. I used to reel mow it, but it’s a little bumpy and needs a needs a sand leveling. To your other question about summer/winter a lot of depends on where you live. I’m in northern Illinois and during the winter it’s frozen and goes dormant. After my last mow for the year I do a fertilizer application, which has quite a few benifits. Summer is the most difficult time to manage grass. To get through I keep my grass around 3 inches, water a half inch once a week if not raining, apply an organic fertilizer like Milorganite on July 4th weekend, and make preventative fungicide applications using disease ex following the label on the bag. Hope that helps!
Wow!!! Beautiful green!.. question.. does your reel lose its cutting adjustment while mowing? I set mine to where it cuts paper and barely touching bed knife.. once i start mowing and after a few passes, reel either tightens up or loosens ..
I used a sand soil mix. And got it as level as possible. USGA regulations require it to be dug out to 18 inches and backfilled with sand and have a proper drainage system installed. That’s way more serious than I would ever do. Again sand top dressing and overseeding are how I got it quite level
Looks very cool , what cool season grass can you do this with only rye grass or can you do it with bluegrass also and would you recommend a mono stand or a blended stand??? Thanks
Thank you! The best grass to do this with is bentgrass. You can use annual bluegrass too. Rye works but it’s not perfect. Some varieties of Kentucky bluegrass can be used, like True Putt, but I’d advise against using bluegrass. Definitely a monostand, preferably Bentgrass.
@@theperfectcutlawncare thanks for the info, so you used mono stand of rye ??? I I should’ve tried this when I lived in Roselle Illinois now I live down here in Louisville Kentucky might be harder to do it down here in the heat transition zone but might try anyhow I got irrigation lol !! Thanks keep the videos coming!!
@@jeffpiendel1898 yes sir. Oh yes that is a hard place to grow any grass type. Geez, if I were there I’d consider Tahoma 31 Bermuda Grass for a lawn and green. But good luck, I don’t envy your location, for grass anyway.
Great stuff brother. I have a couple of acres so can get a 50+ yard shot. I have a 2500 sq ft area of nice fairway type grass I use for practice to hit from. When I am done with a session I just add any missing soil reseed and move to a new spot next time. Works out real well. But...I do not have a green. Thinking about it for next season and your videos are real helpful. My question is about the mower. Seems like they are all very expensive. Where should I be looking to get an affordable 10 blade mower - or do I just need to drop 3K+ and bite the bullet? Right now I have a push reel type for my hitting area, but it does not go near low enough for a green. Any advice would be appreciated.
I’m looking at getting a Hudson Star. Seems to be low maintenance with a good cut. It’s true they are pricey. There’s a number of people that seem to pick up used Deere Mowers for decent prices, and don’t seem to have an issue with keeping it running. I wish I could recommend the Swardman I have.
You've sold me on this idea; I think it will be next year's project... but maybe this fall. Can you offer any help beyond what's been posted? Any updates?
Use a sand soil mixture for establishing the seed. Get it as firm and flat as possible. Sand top dress every 6 weeks. Took me about a year to get it where I wanted it. I enjoyed the putting green. It was nice to chip into after work, and work on my stroke 3-5 feet. But ended up letting it grow out. I could never get the Rye to roll faster than 7 on the stimp. I would end up playing fast bent grass greens and getting the speed right was a tough adjustment. Probably hurt my stroke more than helped. I am highly considering building a bentgrass green. It won’t be to USGA guidelines ( digging it out to 16 inches, fill with gravel, drainage and sand soil root zone) but I think I can pull it off.
@@theperfectcutlawncare Hey, thank you for this! I'm not a golfer, but I like to keep my reputation in the neighborhood as "that crazy old man" going strong, and I thought having a full-sized, pin and flag included, golf course green (with apron) in the back yard would burnish my reputation. Water is being installed on the property after 25 years next month, and then I think I'm ready to go for something bigger. Thanks again for the inspiration. I'll keep you posted.
@hatpeach1 If that’s the case, I think the ryegrass putting green looks amazing with the dark green grass. I used SS9900 Ryegrass from seed superstore. It can handle being cut at 3/16 of inch. You might want to get some Castaway to deal with worm castings, as they can be troublesome with the low cut turf. Good luck, I though it was a fun project that truly looked amazing.
Thank you! The 16-4-8 is just a liquid fertilizer from a distributor in NY. It does a nice job and is affordable, although I haven’t bought any since last year so I have no clue if any thing is reasonable right now.
Didn’t start irrigation until about a week ago. It’s been upper/mid 90’s and so I’ve been watering it for an hour each morning and a 15 minutes in the afternoon. Will probably dial it down to every three days as long as it stays a bit more mild. Didn’t realize it was out of stock! Might switch it out to bentgrass this fall.
@@theperfectcutlawncare well that makes me feel better about accidentally leaving my sprinkler on my project for an hour lol. I mean it rains for longer than an hour all the time, so it'll be fine I think 😂. If you went to bent grass do you think you'd just try to overseed it into the rye or kill the rye and start over?
On the putting green yes. Summer time I let the other grass go to three inches and mow twice a week. Fall I take it back down to three quarter inch on the bluegrass and mow almost daily. 👍🏽
About ten days after seeding I started doing one gentle pass when the grass was at a half inch, cut at just over a quarter inch. I did that for about a week then slowly started to drop the cut until 3/16”.
