Back Yard DIY Putting Green: Everything You Need to Know!!

  • Having a backyard putting green can mean a lot of things to a lot of people. Today, I want to take my experience in my own back yard and break down what you need and what you can expect to get for your time, money, and effort.
    A putting green in your back yard doesn’t have to look like the greens at your local golf course to be useful and fun for you and your family. I can even see value in starting with simply cutting an area of your yard as low as your current rotary mower will go and just see how it works. Use it as a target for chipping or a fun place for your kids to play golf on. Don’t be discouraged or believe there’s no value in this simply because it’s not rolling at 10 on the stimp meter. You can also do this with really any grass type that you already have as well (maybe with the exception of St. Augustine).
    I would recommend next graduating to any of the cheap, big box, entry level style manual reel mowers. This is going to give you the option to get down around a half inch for cutting height. Again, although not going to perform like a true golf course putting green, you can roll a ball on grass that’s this short. If you can pick yourself up one of these mowers and probably do one sand top dress, you’re going to be off and running with something that you can use. Put a couple tees in the ground and just have fun hitting shots to it and rolling putts with your kids. Turf really looks great at this height and it’s going to start to get you a bit addicted to the process, especially if you’re someone like me. Most existing stands of turf will also be able to continue to survive at this height as well. Your cool season blend will do just fine, as will Zoysia, Bermuda, and probably some other warm season grasses that I don’t have any experience with.
    Next, you’re into one of the entry level powered reel mowers (California Trimmer, McLane, Swardman, Allett, etc). Or, and what I recommend, you hunt FB marketplace and other buy, sell, trade sources for a higher blade, higher quality walk behind manual reel mower. I purchased mine from a gentleman for $150 and have seen a couple on occasion in the $200-$250 window. My McLane says it will go down to 3/16 of an inch; however, I think I would have struggled to get down to a quarter or any lower than that. I ran this mower for a couple months and the results I got from it were very good. Again, this will still not get you to green’s height, we need to get to an eighth and below for that. But, this is going to start to really roll nice for you. Once you’re hunting these sub half inch mowing heights, you will need to invest in a wider, nicer rake and complete multiple sand top dresses in order to get the ground smooth enough to mow at this height. I did 4 in 2020 alone to get where I needed to get to. Also, once you’re at these heights, the majority of turf types are going to struggle. Your primary turf is going to be bentgrass for cool season and Bermuda for warm season.
    Finally, you can send yourself all in and invest in a used greensmower. Only at this point will you be able to achieve an actual greens height of an eighth of an inch or lower. Also, at this point, you’re going to be doing more projects to start to try and amend your soil structure and increase the sand content by aerating and sweeping sand into the aerate holes. I would also highly highly advice buying a true leveling rake at this point as well as it will be well worth your money for leveling and getting rid of worm castings, which really become a problem when mowing this low.
    Having a putting green isn’t as hard as everyone makes it out to be. You just have to be committed to the process and I promise you, within a relatively short period of time, you can be the envy of all of your friends and have a natural grass putting green in your own back yard.

    Im an assistant superintendent (greenskeeper) at a private golf club. This video was done very well a lot of very good information especially for a backyard green! Some advice from me: id recommend keeping the size in increments of 500sqft to make math easy for applications. most labels will give the rates per 1000sqft. Top dressing with sand is your friend! helps to prevent scalping, smooths the surface, firms the green up, prevents disease and creates a better soil profile. We top dress our 21 greens at least every 2 weeks lightly and water the sand in. i agree with going Toro or JD for walk mowers. Old Jacobson is good but stay away from the new stuff. One of the most important things to be aware of is water. Overwatering is worse than under watering. easy to give it more water more difficult to take it away.

      Another reason why it's ok to start small and go for it. I found one video that basically wanted you to start with a Bobcat and then lay the drainage underneath (for your backyard putting green!). I don't want USGA, I just want something decent and inexpensive.

      Honestly a small 15x15 seems like a great size if you're going to practice anything from 160yds in with 8 iron to wedges. It''ll force you to aim for a small enough spot you'd have a reasonable chance at 1 putting while forcing you to have enough back spin to stick the landing. :D

    Great video! I am in the middle of installing a putting green as well. I bought a used Toro Greensmaster last fall and started mowing a small soccer field at about a 1/2" (fairway height). This year, I killed a section of lawn and am going to plant bentgrass after I level it with a sand and soil mixture. I am buying my seed from a local country club. I asked them if they could spare a few pounds and they said sure.

    I've worked on 11 golf course construction projects in the 80's. I have built 1 at a former home and it turned out great! I am going g to give a strong word if advice to anyone that wants to do this themselves. Be sure you have proper subsurface drainage underneath your greens (French drain) very important if the drainage poor in your area... Will it work without it yes but it gets tricky with the short mowing heights and managing fungus that can develop... I bored 6' hole away from my green to dump into to remove the excess water under the green. There are other videos out there that can explain further... Ausome video by the way...

Going to invest in a reel mower soon. This video will help me improve my putting green immensely...Funny how I was just wondering about the worm castings and then you mentioned them in your video...I've been getting rid of them with my blower, but I think a rake would be better, and the worm castings are great fertilizer....Keep the videos coming.

      Traps aren't bad either, dig a hole, herringbone drainage, 8-12" layer of sand, good to go! Just make sure you rake it all the time and don't let grass clippings or leaves or any organic matter build up in your sand, then it creates loam aka growing medium! Every time it rains make sure you get that sand back up on the walls, gotta watch out, you will start with a nice even 10" layer across the entire trap and 4 rains later you will have 2" around the edges and 20" in the center!

    Lol when I was a kid I was golf mad my dad had a Barrel blade type petrol mower with grassbox and roller our Garden was about 120ft long and 40ft wide my dad mowed it 2 or 3 times a week in the summer. We had 12 croc plant pots sunk into the ground as holes and you could putt the entire length of the garden with a smooth roll. I sunk several 80 or 90ft putts it got to the stage where putting to the middle holes from either side was considered too easy. They were 15-20ft putts😂😂 I spent every waking hour out there chipping and putting.
    I stopped playing golf when I was about 15 or 16 and just srarted playing again a few months ago after 40 odd years. I don't have a big enough garden to make a putting green and the garden is so sloped you'd need to do months of groundwork before you even got close to having an area to make a green. I'm now kicking myself for giving the game up I was pretty good with the 1000s of hours of chipping and putting I put in. I still putt better than most people but nowhere near as well as I did.

    • @JasonSeiberlich
      @JasonSeiberlich  3 года назад +1

      Yes. If mother nature doesn't help me, I'll water at least once per week. More during summer. I'm always going to be a huge supporter of just trying with a little circle with a manual reel. Don't top dress or do anything else. Just see if you can sustain a once every day or 2 mowing schedule on the little section you pick. $40-$100 investment in the experiment and you can always sell the mower if you decide it's not for you.

    This is my new favorite lawn channel for sure. I just started my own similar project but I have a decent amount of tree shade. Did you have any problems with growing bent grass under your trees? Also do you think you could have maintained a decent putting surface with just the manual mclane?

    • @JasonSeiberlich
      @JasonSeiberlich  3 года назад +1

      There's quite a bit of filtered sun that comes through. I've had no problem growing grass there. Full shade would be a problem. Probably depends on what you mean by decent. I don't think you'd be able to achieve a "true" putting green with the mclane, but at 3/8 it rolled halfway decent when I was mowing with that. You can check out the putting green year in review video when I only had the mclane at the end of the year.

    1- Once the bent grass is establish, can I use pre emergent next spring (Prodiamine) like my KBG lawn?
    2- If there is any weeds that comes up during this construction, what type of herbicide are safe to apply for the bent grass?
    3- At what HOC do I start mowing the new grass?

    • @JasonSeiberlich
      @JasonSeiberlich  Год назад +1

      You can scalp and leave it. Killing it off is probably the best option, but not necessary. If you're going to seed into it, I would say get a good grade with just dirt, get seed to germinate and establish, and then use the sand to topdress. You can use both, but sand is more touchy for getting seed to germinate.

    Great video and breakdown. I too started approximately July of last year (Southern Ontario) and went with a penncross bentgrass. Had some success and had it to a point of "usable" (1/4") prior to the fall but accidently over fertilized and burned out a fair portion of it. I think I've got it back to usable again, but good to know it takes a few years for it to fully mature and that I haven't missed any critical steps. Any advice for when the switch fertilizer types? Or better yet, what to use at what points in maturity? Also, when have you been choosing to apply more top dressing?

      I've top dressed whenever it was starting to bother me lol. Usually try to let it fill back in to some degree and then hit it again. Apps usually around a half pound of nitrogen, and then some interim applications at small rates of fertilizer and/or soil amendments.

      Realistically for a true green you're looking for anything from Toro, John Deere, or Jacobsen. If you're persistent enough for long enough and depending on the market you should be able find one for 500-800. Otherwise you can get started with powered mclane, tru cut, or california trimmer. Those will not go low enough for a true greens height but will get close.

I also hand watered (syringed) the two days it was sunny and in the 90s. So, basically I've watered once or twice a week during times when it's not raining at all.
