I've seen some people still having issues so here is something that appears to help fix the game:
Make sure to not install in the program files (x86) folder as that may cause issues. You may also need to switch which drive you installed the game on as well.
jgvoodoo2 is coming up as a virus
@@survivalizer It's not a virus.
Any suggestions if the game is missing the exe files completely?
@@DragonGamingDB That sounds like a bad install to me.
@@ACE1918 Thanks. It happened again. I was able to figure out some steps and finally able to access the launch options. Game crashes though when clicking the play button.
Thank you so much! I nearly shed a tear when the game launched because of all the childhood memories with this game!
Wow... Thank you. Through the robust comments on here and the detailed video I was able to get my GOG copy running. This is amazing even when I was a kid running it on windows 98 we couldn't get these bugs to go away. Makes me feel so happy and nostalgic to see it in all it's glory.
I'm overjoyed to report that your guide worked perfectly for me. I mean, there was a little bit of a mix-up trying to configure my joypad because I had the wrong settings while configuring it, but that of course is my bad.
I've been troubleshooting emulation, independent ports, and the official ports of this, one of my favorite games, for years trying to get the experience of playing Rogue Squadron 3D at release so THANK YOU SO MUCH for this guide. I finally have the ideal version of this game and it runs perfectly!
please can I have some advice on what emulators to run?
Damn, I never realized it was this complicated. They really should put a warning on these kinds of games on Steam, I'm always disappointed when a game runs like trash because it's just too old.
Damn, I remember I played countless hours of this game on my old Nintendo 64. Still have the cartridge, as well as the console. Such awesome memories!
I got it working great thanks. Looks beautiful in 4k with 8x aa, I wish there was a draw distance adjustment now lol Your guide also fixed a problem I was having with no menu sound so thanks again. I hope more people find this video, I looked and looked for a solution on youtube and didn't see your video until I saw it on the steam community hub.
OMG... I could kiss you! (no tongues of course) ;)
I used to play this game until my thumbs bled and when steam said it was win 7 compatible I bought it, but that darn bug drove me crazy and I gave up on it. Can't believe I stumbled on this by pure chance, followed your instructions and now it works a treat.
Well done that man!
Bleeding thumbs here I come... :D
This actually fixed everything for me on windows 11. I couldn't get past HAL error on the GOG release and I had NEVER been able to use gamepad on this game before
Thanks a lot this fixed all my issues, I shall now sacrifice my first born in your name
I followed all the steps and it runs now exactly like it did on my old win95 32mb ram PC! Except now alot smoother and faster. Thank you for your work!
This is still the best guide to getting an ideal version of Rogue Squadron 1. You know, with us getting two Star Wars remasters this year, I honestly hope for a remaster of the entire Rogue Squadron tetralogy, because 1. I really wanna play Rebel Strike due to its Geonosis level and TIE Hunters and 2. to have an all-in-one easy to use package to get my RS1 fix. However, this guide and emulating Rogue Leader through Dolphin will do for the time being.
Thanks for this! Still works great as at March 2023 😊
FINALLY WORKING !!
Piloting the Naboo N1 is as orgasmic today as it was 24 years ago even on keyboard. (I enjoyed it with a MS sidewinder pad to the point of my fingers hurting)
Thank you soo much for this handy guide and the links for the utilities.
A shame that the game source code is still proprietary to this day, I'm sure fixes would have come up a long time ago if it was available.
For the records, Initially my game (GOG and steam) keep freezing at the first mission (it could not launch it but I was entering the menu and the garage but there was freeze at the end of each panel and my CPU 1 was overloaded if I pressed alt+tab).
I played this today on a Pentium III 700 Mhz computer with a Sony 20 inch crt monitor...what a nostalgia rush. Windows 98 worked great.
Man, this game is frustrating to deal with. So annoying to have to hack around at it try to get it to work the way it should.
Thanks for your effort and support to help make the game run properly.
As mentioned in the pinned comment moving the game's directory such as to a different drive should fix the issue you have.
@@ACE1918 thanks for the quick response and sorry for being so salty to begin with. It's great of you to help make these games work for people.
Well WTF this never worked before and now I follow these exact instructions and it works for the first time in probably 13 years. Camera finally fixed. Im frustrated that this didnt work before because I've tried about a dozen variations of this exact fix. You are a god. This has been a constant problem for 20 years. PC is now finally superior to Project 64 for this game.
You are the best, i was looking for the solution in a good time, thanks!
help I've been following the guide and I cannot seem to get RTSS to launch properly even as admin. Any idea what could be going on?
Worked flawlessly for me. Thank you very much!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Can confirm that RivaTuner fixes the camera bug. Can also confirm that I needed 120 FPS in there to run it at 60 FPS!
Did you ever fix the aspect ratio? You have it running in widescreen here but the picture is distorted. If that is just youtube stretching your video into widescreen, does that mean you're playing the game in 4:3 aspect with black bars on the sides? Because if this is playing in 1920x1080 resolution, then your aspect ratio is incorrect and everything is stretched horizontally causing not only all graphics to appear stretched, but to morph any time there is a change in roll or bank angle. I've heard there is a hexedit fix to correct the aspect ration for widescreen resolutions.
Hey! I followed this video exactly but when I went to go start this game is doesn't detect that the game is installed. It says to check and make sure the cd-rom is inserted, installed, and current version of Directx drivers installed, but I have the steam version of the game. I tried uninstalling the game and redoing all the steps and got the same results. Can anyone help me out?
You may want to try moving the game's directory, like if it is in the Program Files (x86) folder for example.
Thank you so much for making this video. Well, I am going to go away and try this soon, and find out if the cardinal sin of running a 4:3 game stretched to 16:9 is truly unavoidable... if not... I will be back...
This is fixable with some hex-editing. More details in my Tumblr post on Rogue Squadron 3D
@@skyboxeye awesome :)
Works like a charm, thank you!
First step is to install Rogue Squadron, which the computer won't do. It gives a message that says it's incompatible and to contact the vendor. I move the MS files to the Rogue folder and a message comes up that says not enough space on disc. I have the disc and a pirated ISO. I can't even get past step 1
Thanks for the post, but I was confused AF within the first 30 seconds.
The RTTS did not end up working for me... I tried troubleshooting for an hour...
Works but the controller does not unfortunately :( detected in the launcher and in the test but not ingame :( any ideas?
It works fairly well for the most part, but there's no AA being applied, and I have the dgVoodoo watermark on the bottom right even when the option is unchecked in the DirectX tab.
You may want to make sure that the options you set up in DgVoodoo2 were for Star Wars Rogue Squadron as DgVoodoo2 keeps multiple profiles for the different directories you added.
this video is great to people who bought the game on gog but I have a physical copy and it doesn't seem to help, I tried for a solid 3 hours and nothing. It isn't that this method doesn't work but I just wanted to clarify that this doesn't fix the physical cd copy of the game, I myself will save up for it on gog and if you have the physical copy I recommend you do so too.
hi, I have windows 11. When I run RTSS.exe as an admin nothing happens. It is like the program is running in the background. Any help is appreciated.
hello can you please fix my Roque Squadron is low fps ....in menu i fast but after start game is drop fps ....i already installed voodoo and other support software but it same got very low fps and a resolution not changed why that's happened...
allthough this video is almost 2 ear old at this point, I am very thankful for it. Bought RS3D a couple of weeks ago in a Steam sale during Star Wars week. But yeah, it is very outdated tech wise on modern machines. So lets see what your fixes might do to "repair" the game.
EDIT: Although I set it up to "Window Mode" in dG Voodoo, it is still fullscreen. Also, when the game is runing, I can not switch to other Windows app / switch Windows at all. Any tipps on that? Also, I can not set the resolution any higher than 1240x1024. Nothing remotly with 1080p
I couldn't get RTSS to run. set it to administrator and when I open it windows asks if I want to allow it to run, I say yes but the app never opens
same happen to me :(
its probably hidden in the Windows bar bottom right cornern. Just click there and it should open.
I loved this game on n64, but this version was a bitch.
I read that you could fix the Camera bug setting CPU affinity to 1 Core, but it dsnt work, RivaTuner in the other hand helped me alot, I had an strange Bug with RTSS tho, I put 60FPS limit, but it have me 30fps in game, I just double it for the lols to 120fps and in game get 60fps.
Also In case someone having isue with Mapping controllers, i recomend to chance compatibility to Windows 98/me to the Rogue.exe, Press deafult and controllers should be set. i have this issue with my joystick MetalStrike 3D.
Just leaving this here in case someone has that issue.
Hi there, I managed to get it to play but I can`t get it to recognize my Thrustmaster T Flightstic X.
It´s regogized by win 10 and in the start box of the game as well. It just won´t let me configue it in game. Tried with riva running or without. Any ideas?
I installed it on drive C.
For that you'll want to run the game in windows 98 compatibility mode to configure the controls for your stick and then turn off windows 98 mode to play the game.
Followed your guide, and while it fixed the resolution, game crashed loading in to a level (runs with no mods to widescreen) also, frame rate is pretty laggy when the mod is applied. Are there any changes to this for 2022?
Frame rate issues tend to come from leaving the game in windows 98 compatibility mode. Windows 98 mode should only be used for configuring controls for a controller and then turned off.
Has anyone gotten this working on the deck?
I have downloaded the latest version of RTSS, have the RTSS.exe file set to run as administrator, but when I try to start it, it is only running as a background process and no window pops up. Am I running the wrong exe?
It should be part of the hidden icons on the bottom right of your toolbar.
@@ACE1918 Thanks, I found it. I changed the compatibility of RogueSquadron.exe to windows 98, confirmed the hardware setting to be d3d mode, undid the compatibility as instructed, and now the game is asking me to insert the disc(I am using the steam version of the game). I have the DDraw.dll, D3Dlmm.dll, and D3D8.dll in the ROGUE folder with the exes. My version of voodoo also has a D3D9.dll file, do I also need to include that? I appreciate the help immensely.
@@fluoridaman3967 For that issue I have found moving the installation directory of the game can fix that issue. Not sure if moving to another drive or taking it out of the program files (x86) folder is what it takes to fix.
Trying tos tart the game in compatibility mode gives me an error telling me to insert the CD or ensure the game is installed. I should mention the game launched before i followed this guide but I got the camera bug amongst other things. On top of that reinstalling the game changed nothing
I've found that moving the game's directory may help, such as taking it out of the program files (x86) folder. The compatibility mode is only used temporarily and is so you can configure the controller you'd want to use.
@@ACE1918 It's currently installed on my D drive where I keep most of my steam games. I'll try moving it to the C drive.
@@Michael00189 Let me know if it fixes the problem or not.
@@ACE1918 it did
@@Michael00189 Glad to hear it!
Can you find and post a fix for aspect ratio for Battle for Naboo on PC?
Good tutorial, but voodoo has been updated, and the MS folder now has new folders in it.
x86, x64, and arm64
Yeah you should use the x86 folder.
The game works well but every time i try to choose the game controller its always blank, why is it doing this when my xbox one controller is already linked to steam
Sorry for the late reply, if I remember correctly you need to run the game in windows 98 when setting up a controller. Once your settings are all good to go then exit and run it normally (not in windows 98).
@@ACE1918 I got it working a month ago, thanks tho
My housemate refused to play my N64 copy of this, so got the PC version. All his wingmen would wobble all over the place as they flew around the map :P Any chance you could give Bf 1942 itself one of these vids? On windows 7 my keybindings are inexplicably locked, and any attempt to launch my own co-op custom match always crashes the game. Never happened on previous windows :/
I actually did cover Battlefield 1942 before. I've never heard of the problems you've mentioned. I would suggest running the game in Windows 98 mode and as admin. Also check to see if the files that contain your options have "read only" turned on.
@@ACE1918 I've changed it from XP to 98 for my disk version- I'll try it out when I find that damn disk... looks like the Origin version doesn't allow that to be edited though. It's been like this ever since I updated drivers for Battlefield 1. Maybe I'll just roll them back.
@@_Braised I believe there are patches that remove the requirement to have origin running when you boot the game, so that can be an option.
I found a copy of the no origin patch on the website for the Interstate 82 mod for the game:
is82.com/download.php?view.5509
Oh my god I just wanted to play an old game, jeeeeeesus, i gotta fuckin hack the nasa servers to play this old piece of yunk
I can't seem to get to the dgVoodoo2 download... any advice?
Ah man, I still have the camera bug after setting up RTSS. Kinda sucks. Also is there a way to extend out the LODs, seeing TIE fighters popping in with higher quality models is kinda distracting, but I understand if it's an engine limitation.
Unfortunately I haven't seen anything on how to make the higher quality models show at greater distances.
If possible I'd suggest setting RTSS to high detection mode to help make sure it notices the game. Turning on on-screen display support can be useful to ensure the game is properly detected.
Do I need to keep those downloaded programs on my pc or can I dump them now?
Yes you need to keep the stuff you downloaded.
@@ACE1918thank you for the response. I could totally see myself forgetting why I installed those things and removed them down the line. Game runs really great now and I don’t have to consider finding OG hardware just for a couple of titles I still want to go back to.
I started following your instructions step by step and now my game is in a infinite loop of asking to start with admin permission then just opening the launcher again. I can't even get the game to open now...
I would check to see if you are trying to start Rogue Squadron.exe or Rogue.exe. Also are you using the Steam version, GOG version, or CD version of the game?
@@ACE1918 I have the Steam version (Jacob also likely owns that version too).
the links is broken
U need to type a password to be able to de archive the app
CAN I have it please?
The dgVoodoo2 password is: shitgoogle
Its not working I did up to the RTSS set the compatibility etc running the EXE in Windows 98/me the game does not start up it just keeps trying to starting up with the damn launcher....
Which .exe do you have rtss set to look for, Rogue.exe or Rogue Squadron.exe?
@@ACE1918 Rogue.exe
@@hmuphilly9129 RTSS needs to be set to cover Rogue Squadron.exe
@@ACE1918 same issue is still happening keeps looping the launcher
I used the voodoo shown in your video should i use the newest voodoo and rtss.
I'm still having the "could not initialize SAL/MOSysFx" error after trying everything in this video!
I would suggest seeing if there was an error during the download and installation. Also are you trying to use a GOG or Steam version? In addition, I also have to ask if you are trying to run it with WINE, as that has been reported to cause your specific issue.
I did everything to follow along but it says unable to start and to also check if I have the game installed or run rogue.exe directly which I did. i have the steam version
If it's asking you if the game is installed then that suggests that the issue is with the registry not being properly done during installation. I'd suggest reinstalling the game, as trying to edit the registry manually can be tricky and a little risky.
@@ACE1918 Hate to necro this but I'm getting the same issue after the RTSS step, says unable to start and to check if the game is installed or that the CD is ine
fixed it by turning off compatibility and admin, but now I just get a black screen in the main menu
@@MegaAngryspoon I'd suggest moving the install for the game, especially if it is in the program files (x86) folder. Also the compatibility mode is only temporary and only to setup the controller configurations.
When I launch the game it makes me go through a loop of steam trying to download directX 9 and I have done everything the video tells you to do but it still happens. Whenever I try to download directX 9 it says I need windows xp or 98. I have no idea what to do now
Trying using this download and see if it fixes the problem:
www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=19743
I followed his instructions to a T and now my game is broken...
Won't even boot up
@@doogerw2675 Sorry for the late reply, I've found that changing the drive the game is installed on tends to fix issues like the one you're having.
thankyou
Guide does not say what to do when the game asks for a CD
The answer is to change the install location, changing the drive or keeping out of program files (x86) tends to fix it.
Does this work with Xbox controllers?
I use an Xbox 360 controller to play myself.
@@ACE1918 I just figured it out. Had to disable compatibility for the controller to work
@@retrolizardscustomarcades Yeah the compatibility does need to be disabled later on as it also causes framerate issues, it is only really used at a very specific step.
Algún héroe que lo explique en español!!!
This is so hard on the N64.
Or you could just keep the same computer you had in 1998 and turn it on with its Elsa revelator 3-D glasses and video card and see real 3-D when looking inside the monitor.
Doesn´t work, game doesn´t even react to this software.
You need to set the application detection level to high.
"ok do all this" "now undo all this" uhhhhhhhhhhhhh ok u lost me.
You need to do the compatibility so you can configure a joystick or controller. Once that is done you need to remove the compatibility settings as they make the game run slow when you get ingame.
doesnt work
For someone that 'repairs games', you failed on something basic, the aspect ratio. You lost all credibility and I stopped watching.
Black bars are cringe.
These would be good instructions if AVG didn't identify the site as dangerous, the downloads an malicious and the software as damaging to your computer. I shut it off to run your fix and the second I turned it back on it identified Rogue Squadron itself as malicious software.... so yeah, voodoo2 and AVG do not mix
Yeah, I've had problems in the past with certain anti-virus programs and AVG being one of them. I had to switch because of all the trouble my anti-virus was giving me over Battlefield 1942.
ACE1918 I got it to finally ignore it by sticking it a folder that was already on the exception list and extracting there then putting an exception on rogue folder and voodoo. So far so good but I’m still setting up. Hopefully it won’t ping the game again.
Is a trap!
Method did not work. do not trust. Game will no longer run.
Try to make sure to not install the game in the program files (x86) folder as well as try changing the install drive as that may cause an issue as well.
Hello ACE1918,
In regard to the rogue squadron 3D.
Please tell me, do you know how to properly compile and use all the tools found here: github.com/dpethes/rerogue
I am able to compile them, but I get a variety of errors when trying to run them. :(
I wouldn't be able to tell you because I've never used those tools.
