basically i just put 3dmark 2000 in 98/me compat mode on xp and it fires right up , i will say from experience in trying nvidia and amd cards in xp systems , i tend to get more older games running on the amd cards but the last emulation options and special ones like the pcsx2 1.6 version that was modified for xp will only work on nvidia cards
My XP PC is multi-purpose so it doesn't end up gathering dust in a cupboard. Its an ITX system based on the Asus P8x77i-Deluxe, i7 3770K@4.9GHZ, Corsair H80i, The same MSI 980ti, 16GB Kingston HyperX Beast 2400, 512GB Samsung 850 Pro SSD and 500GB Seagate SSHD, 24x DVD writer and USB Creative Sound Blaster X-Fi Surround 5.1 Pro (v1 as that's the only one with XP drivers, the others work but no official drivers for EAXHD as I found with the v3 I originally bought for it), all in a coolermaster Elite 130. I Triple boot XP and XP64 along with Windows 11 and its smaller size and windows 11 means it doubles as a HTPC as well. I did originally go with an ATX built in my nice blue Xaser III, but its size meant I just kept it in the cupboard most of the time and would just not bother 9/10 given the weight and hassle of setting it up in a space I could use it. So this ITX version that has more everyday use means it always available should I need it. Also using my old Ideazon Merc keyboard as it only seems to work properly under XP, along with my Sidewinder Force Feedback 2. The USB audio makes the complete package with that full EAX support, with its remote adding to its functionality as a HTPC.
This is a Vista/7 pc in my opinion, but of course that's MY opinion and opinions are worth nothing when it comes to nostalgia and personal preference :D My perfect XP machine is standing right next to me; a Pentium 4 3.60 Ghz with 4GB of RAM (XP only sees 3.25GB of it but it's all stable and useable) a 1000W Enermax psu (overkill) and an NVIDIA GeForce GTX 970 (4GB). The reason I'm using a single-core cpu is because some older games don't like running on a multi-core cpu. Yes, I know about setting cpu-affinity in task manager but I own a couple of games that even crash occasionally when running on just one cpu, the only solution being a badass single-core like the P4. But I see what you were aiming for in this video and you nailed it! Awesome video man! Never forget our beloved XP :D
Thanks! Yes - it would be a beast of a Vista/7 machine as well - I agree. My next attempt at an even MORE over the top XP machine will be using an LGA1151 I7-6700K machine I currently use as a media centre, which is completely wasted for it's given task. My perfect XP machine would be based on my old Athlon XP 3200+, and i've been trying to do something with it in 2 motherboards and a mix of hardware, but no matter what I do on the build, the PC always restarts during the 3DMark2001 Advance Pixel Shader test. It isn't the ram, the GPU, the PSU, the storage or the motherboards, as with a 1700+ it completes the test just fine.? It's super confusing. I have yet another motherboard on the way - an ABIT NF7-S V2.0 - and with luck it'll complete the test. But will it run Crysis?
@@RetroKomodo Nice! I played around with one of those 3200+ cpus, some games ran way better than on my P4 while others ran a little slower, interesting cpu for sure. Crysis will be a piece of cake I think, depending on the RAM/GPU choice :)

@@RetroKomodo Good to hear. Even with stereo you'll gain effects you won't otherwise hear, although I agree it's most beneficial when connected to a 5.1/7.1 speaker system.
I like your lovely PC. For the processor I think the best choice is an X79 motherboard. On it you can use Xeon 1680 v2 processor which is 8 cores with high ipc due to large cache and quad channel memory. When overclocked it can provide similar performance to AMD Ryzen 2700x and has native driver support for XP.

Great Video! Is this a 32 or 64 bit Windows XP? And which forceware version would you recommend? I'm building a i5 2500k with two 285 gtx in SLI, hope to get it working soon.
I've only ever dabbled with 32. I remember when it came out and the problems people had with 64 bit - issues that generally weren't there on 32 bit so I've steered clear ever since! As for a forceware version for SLI? Last time I did SLI was.. ooooh.. a long time ago! I honestly don't know what drivers set would be best for it! I'm sure someone out there must have tested various drivers with SLI 🤔
Good idea! However I'm kinda already drowning in cases and parts at the moment.. also the 4790k I'm already using is supposedly faster anyway according to cpu.userbenchmark.com/Compare/Intel-Core-i7-4960X-vs-Intel-Core-i7-4790K/1977vs2384 ;)
1800 FPS in Quake 3? That's still weak, I need at least 3000 FPS. 😀 I have E8600 (I tested even Q9550, but there is no benefit from 4 cores in such games) and GTX460 or GTX 275 for XP gaming, there is pretty much no point in using something newer, because those games from like 2010 can run on Win 10 without any problem on your modern computer.
Mine is a multi-os rig. GTX 750 1gb factory oc'd, 8gb ddr3 1600, i5-3570, h77 mobo, SB X-Fi Titanium, all cooling is Noctua, LG blu-ray burner, bay drawer. XP sp3 "integral edition"I found on some website that has all the stuff already slipstreamed, and Ubuntu 20.04. The graphics card and gpu handle everything xp related, Ubuntu handles my online activity (my only Steam games are xp related or indi that I can't get on GOG).
I never got into Ubuntu and other Linux flavoured options.. I may start having a look at what's out there! With the amount of hardware switching I do I've not really looking into multiple booting yet. Perfectly good for XP and I like the bay drawer for the bits and bobs. Had one on my Amazon wish list for ages..
@@RetroKomodo ya, I don't have to swap any hardware out for this. I rarely use the internet on my PC anyway (I do everything on my phone) and Ubuntu handles my RUclips fix, my Retroarch fix, and my social media, and the XP is for all the past games I love. Since I can't safely go online with the xp part but need the chipset drivers installed, I put a physical toggle switch in line for the router so I can just disconnect access by turning it off on the line. You may want to look into it, if you don't need much in liu of internet access and/or many Microsoft or Apple specific apps. It's very lean on system resources and quite versatile, though there is a bit of a learning curve. You do still have to manually do some stuff but they've even developed a gui installer now to handle most things.
@@RetroKomodo also, again, depending on the apps, Ubuntu would be excellent for hardware switching. It doesn't go into a panic if you take the drive out of one machine and put it in another, or swap a cpu or other stuff. It just updates itself with the hardware in the system, and you don't have any limits to how often you can reconfigure it like Windows does (or at least used to).
@@RetroKomodo Ubuntu looks very much like it tbh. Just blocky. I keep referring to Ubuntu because I find it's the most similar to XP/7 and I don't really need to do much on it. Being not so software savvy, I find it's at least a decent introduction to Ubuntu (was great for me).

Could be tricky on Ryzen, but apparently can be done! www.reddit.com/r/windowsxp/comments/jnvgyr/question_how_to_install_xp_on_am4_b450/ but remember that XP won't use all that memory, and the fastest unofficial graphics card you can use is a GTX 980ti using GTX 960 drivers. I occasionally see that people have got 10 series graphics cards running on XP, but no idea how! I think Ivy Bridge was the last processor generation with native XP support. Anything newer and you are likely to get driver errors apparently!
Ah yes real XP gaming PC also needs classic theme for maximum performance. I used to do it on my crappy Windows XP PC just because I could save extra 2 MB of RAM for my (literally) on-board graphics chipset :).
Can't you actually use newer CPUs as long as you bundle drivers with the install? I remember overclocking coffeelake under windows xp at a convention competitively. The only problem would be stuff like usb controller incompatibility but you can always just get an old pcie card for USB and install that. And ps2 works too ofc.
Probably? I think it gets a bit tricky with the drivers.. I just randomly googled and found www.reddit.com/r/intel/comments/hukopd/windows_xp_vista_7_and_81_working_on_intel_comet/

What do you even do with Windows XP nowadays? since in 2012 Windows XP seemed amazing but now what to do with it?
To get the ultimate XP PC (much faster) you need to use the x64 version of XP. It was always sad to see people use 64bit processors and then installing the 32bit version of XP, and it's still sad, especially when people are trying to create an "ultimate XP machine" etc. They have no idea what they're missing, or missed. Many people's memories or impressions about XP being slow or bad are largely due to them having only ever used the 32bit version, despite them often having had 64bit processors (so it didn't have to be like that for them), and of course also because they didn't use it with an SSD (usually not even a 10k RPM Raptor/VelociRaptor HDD). I've been using the x64 version since early 2006 and haven't installed a 32bit XP on any computer since then other than some very old 32bit-limited laptops. The x64 version supports 128GB of RAM so even if one is using old DDR2 mobos from the Core2Duo/Quad era one can use the full 8GB they offer. By the way the last update for x64 XP was released in May 2019, five whole years after XP """support""" was "ended". By far the best (the fastest and most secure and most bloat-free) x64 release is the one called "Superior Windows XP x64 Edition (64 bit) revival 6 2009" which is a very cleverly tweaked version of x64 XP, quite unique, faster than even the standard x64 XP and a lot of nonsense removed. Looks a bit odd at first just after it's installed (the arrow and colors) but a few minutes of basic customizing fixes that. When installing any version of XP remember to pre-align the SSD to 4k before installing (easiest way is a via a Win7 install disc). Of course with x64 XP you can run all the Maxwell cards using the same method as for 32bit XP. Only downside to x64 XP is that on-board mobo "HD Audio" doesn't work so you need a soundcard. If you really want to go all the way and make the truly ultimate XP machine then boot x64 XP (Superior Edition of course) from an NVMe SSD from an x99 or similar era mobo, I think x299 boards work as well; any board with a "Legacy boot" mode in the bios works, although keep in mind some of the later boards' on-board ethernet won't work for XP (32bit or x64) so with x99 and later boards you likely need a dedicated ethernet card. And use whatever highest-end Xeon processor available for the board.
You were right - long comment! I'll admit - i've never installed 64bit windows XP after hearing various comments on instability, but I don't see why I shouldn't give it a try - especially on newer hardware. Looking for "Superior Windows XP x64 Edition (64 bit) revival 6 2009" now!!
I'm curious as to whether these machines are safe to hook up to the internet now that there is no official support for the OS? Or do you purely keep these systems offline?
Personally I never put XP online any more. I believe there are ways to do it and stay safe? but I haven't really investigated! If I need patches etc I just transfer them via usb from my editing pc :)
@@RetroKomodo Thanks for the reply, I thought that may be the case! I'm seriously tempted to try and build myself an XP gaming machine - maybe not as high spec as this one - but I loved PC gaming during that era so I'm hoping it'll bring back some of the love I once had for gaming. Modern games just don't appeal to me anymore :(
It's pointless to connect to the internet with that because XP is already completely cutted off and you will not find any browser and antivirus which still works on today internet and is possible to install it on XP. I think the point of building retro gaming computer is to be online and not bothered by all those shits like updates and online features, you know that how you install it, it stays like that.

basically i just put 3dmark 2000 in 98/me compat mode on xp and it fires right up , i will say from experience in trying nvidia and amd cards in xp systems , i tend to get more older games running on the amd cards but the last emulation options and special ones like the pcsx2 1.6 version that was modified for xp will only work on nvidia cards
I know what the problem is now - 3dm2000 is fine on a single core system, but on my e7600 i just can't get it going. So dual core = bad for 3dm2000 ;)
Wow! That's pretty great having it multi boot like that. I'll have to give that a go. Great build!
How do you do the triple boot off of two drives?

And no doubt you still can using the GeForce 314.14 driver from the looks of things! If you still have it that is :)

RAM: 2x2 GB DDR3 1600 Mhz
GPU: Nvidia GeForce GTX 980 (officially supported! No hacks, mods. Driver version: 344.11 - Nvidia forgot to remove those gpu cards from that version)
Why not a 4790k? I think the last one I got in a bidding war was about £60 ;) But yeah - sounds like a solid XP system!

@@lukeautosymbol2668 All games with DX9 support fly, or you even need to put a GTX 780 Ti graphics card, these cards are very expensive and to this day they pull a lot of new games, for which ERRTI cards behind your eyes. there even GTA 4 flies at ultra settings in 1080p. the only thing is that not everyone will give out a lot of FPS games, the same Tomb Raider 2013 on XP and does not require more RAM and XP sees only 3.4 GB, because in the game in some places FPS will sink to 33 frames, even at the lowest settings. because you need more RAM in 1080p. and so it will rest against the RAM limit, but all games are fully playable and no game has sunk below 30. and I tested a lot of games, such as Metro Last Light, Assassin's Creed 1-2. Call of Duty Modern Warfare 3, Max Payne 3, Remember Me, La Noire, Outlast 2013, Dishonored 1, Crysis 2. Resident Evil 6, Minecraft last version support 1.16.5. And most importantly I forgot to say all the games had to be downloaded on torrents, because steam does not work on XP, or install games from disks, if available.
Btw great content komodo
Witcher 2 is more dmmanding than Crysis and run on WInXP
Oooh. I'll see if I can dig up a copy of it on disk - thanks! Is there a benchmark?

For the SSD, I will use use both of them because I want to dualboot windows xp and windows 10 on my gaming pc
That'd be a great system for both!
Intel Haswell and Nvidia Maxwell on XP 🤨 Whut ? How ?
All driver supported! Sort of..
I'm running XP on an i7 3970x, 32gb Ram and a Titan Z (For SLI), if you are on the book of faces check out "Not Quite Retro Machines"
I will!

32bit windows ?
Yup. 64 bit XP has compatibility issues. 32 bit is far more stable
@@RetroKomodo you wont be using your ram then :P
@@Brommes well.. a maximum of about 3.25gb? Most of these old motherboard support a maximum of 4gb anyway!
@@RetroKomodo fyi I used xp pro x64 for years never had any instability plus you can run multi cores 😀👍
not sure if you mentioned it but nlite for xp is free I believe .. if you are not using it you should get some solid help making your installs if you should choose to use it ..
Go fasters are you crazy I don't think that is any monitor that goes more than 300fps and event if the are I don't think that is possible to see that Mach fps eny Way
Maybe, but it's a lot smoother ;)
Windoesoso
hmmmm.. officially there are no drivers for Windows XP for your motherboard
True, but if you use the Snappy Driver Installer from sdi-tool.org/ it will install all the drivers in it! That's another video I need to do.. Take a look at Phils video on it here: ruclips.net/video/a4PTuaF8BO0/видео.html :)
Neither for 980ti. GTX 960 is the latest supported for XP. I am suspecting that most drivers are not installed properly, or missing entirely.
A i5-3570K (overclocked with deactivated cores) + GTX960 is best you can have on XP 32bit.
@@ares23dc correct - no official drivers - but you can use modified drivers and they work just fine. ruclips.net/video/63omFhP-0i8/видео.html
Dual up those CPUs and didnt they make the 980Ti SLi capable?
Another Ultimate XP build thats about half what it could have been.
Sorry to disappoint! I guess I could have another crack at it with a different setup, but I'd need another 980 ti.. That motherboard only has the one PCIE slot anyway!
SLI/Crossfire on Windows XP is only possible up to the GTX 580 and HD 6970. You can't do SLI with Kepler or Maxwell Cards or Crossfire with GCN on XP, you need Windows Vista or later for it.
The PC isn't "half what it could have been" at all.
@@qpwoeiruty668 Thats interesting to know. I did wonder why mine doesnt have the connector on the top of the card.
@@RetroKomodo XP uses per socket licencing not per CPU like Win2k does ;-)

Please stop using stupid amounts of AA. No one should use over 4x
It's normally the game or benchmark default when set to high settings, but I'll keep that in mind! I guess fair comparisons would be with all that stuff turned off 🤔
You didn't even say what parts were in the rig other than what year the parts were from. Really bad video.
The make and model of the parts appear on screen at the time they are being identified. They're also in the video description.
@@RetroKomodo Ya but the stupid graphic overlay with the targeting system is really annoying, you can't even notice the text on top with all the flashing and targeting.
Great Vid , man i miss Windows XP aka the Last Proper OS (Win7 comes second because of bloatware)
btw is it possible to get your iso for Windows XP to use it as USB bootable ? Thanks in advance
I can't remember where I got it from but there was a video I watched where the chap had made an ISO with all the security fixes and that's where I got it from! Sorry I can't remember which one though
Its possible to get iso for windows xp ethier 32 or 64 bit the problem is installing it from usb for me tool called YUMI worked for 32 and 64bit winxp
