u dont but better graphics does provide a more in depth world
@@IsraelZamora-lx9jy yes - and sometimes, better graphics are the less realistic and aesthetically pleasing graphics
My Windows XP setup is : Asus A8N32-SLI Deluxe , Athlon 4800+ X2 , Two 7900 GTX in SLI with 8GB DDR server memory . Still have many parts from that era new in box
That's super nice, I want to build a SLI system in the future also. How is the SLI working?
Great computer for Windows XP but my era is MS-DOS - Windows 98. Thanks for this video anyway. In the past, I wanted to say that the Nvidia 960 is overkill, but it's like you read my mind and put the top 7900 in this build. Nice work, my friend!
Thank you very much. I'm into Windows 98-XP era, but I'm very glad for all the channels that cover older stuff (like DOS), because I can look at their videos :)
Lol at “when you get married you learn to use kitchen utensils as tools” so true. Great video as always.
Thank you :)
That was funny
Once built a PC with scissors as could not find screwdriver
I remember getting 30 fps average with a E8400/GTX 7800 on retail Oblivion with 720p. Everything else was from a stock Dell VOSTRO 220. Slightly higher end components can really squeeze 15 fps out of certain games.
If you had the GTX 7800 256 MB, I get it why the low framerate. Oblivion was a very demanding game, you needed 2x7900 to run it properly, at 60 FPS.
When Oblivion first came out I had an Athlon 64 2800+ and an ATI Radeon 9600 Pro All-in-Wonder, I remember what trash it looked like at 640x480 until I got my 3700+ and GeForce 6800 GT but even then I kept it to 1024x768 and had to play around with it to get it as smooth as I wanted.
That resolution in Oblivion was such an overkill. Most people in 2006 had 1024x786 monitors.
That's true, but Oblivion deserved to be played at 1920x1200, which was a valid resolution back then, a resolution included in many reviews.
Of course, no system back then could play Oblivion at 1920x1200 properly :)
I was using 1152x864 on my CRT back in the day. 😀 But ofcourse for games I was using what I needed to, sometimes even 800x600. 😀
Interesting as ever. There are a lot of similarities to my own XP build, but I figured I would highlight some differences. I use the same processor, but with DDR3 memory clocked at 1600MHz and the FSB at 400MHz. This allows the 8600 to run at a seady 4.0GHz and then I used the maximum officially sanctioned voltage for the CPU. I do use 8GB of RAM and then use the excess for a drive buffer. Finally I have a GTX 285. I will be looking at some of the games you used on my test system as I believe this will actually not have any compatibility issues but a lot more performance.
Thank you! You are absolutely right about the GTX 285, I was using a GTX 275 in one of my computers, but then changed it to a GTX 960.
So, I was thinking to move that GTX 960 in some nice Vista / 7 build, and use the GTX 275 for another XP build...because, why not??
Drive buffer?

Thank you very much :)
Long ago, I built an "ultimate" windows 98 system with KERNEL EX , which allowed for Nglide 3dFX emulation and other Windows XP software only to be run on windows 98. You should try that project. I was playing 3dFX games with Nglide on super high resolutions. it was glorious
Sweet, I was using nglide for some projects, and it run ok on Athlon64, but I don't have a "glide" computer, I'm planning to!
16:46 CJ's "AaaAah!!!"
LOOL
Sorry, what? :))
For the most old games, a widescreen patch is available, and there are workarounds to run on a recent Windows version.
I love the retro build and very nice job with the benchmarks, subscribed!
Thanks :)
You can easily use higher end GPUs. Windows XP driver available for up to Nvidia 9xx series GPUs for example. 4GB RAM is also supported by Windows XP so could run dual channel 2x2GB. Not sure why use that overkill cooler on a 65w processor which could be upgrade to quad core even an xeon or 771 processor with socket mod. Windows XP itself can run up till 1155 socket platform for even more performance options.
You can, and I've used GTX 275 and GTX 960, but I was not impressed :)
I don't have right now 4 GB of DDR 1066 memory, and I wanted to have components from the high-end spectrum, hence the beefy Ninja cooler.
Also, the Ninja is very silent, the stock cooler is a little louder.
I've got an XP retro system with an i5-4590, GT 1030, and 4GB of RAM with an SSD and it's hilariously fast for WinXP stuff but I find myself using my Pentium 4 and Athlon 64 machines with period-correct Radeon 9800 Pro and GeForce 9800 GTX cards for the proper nostalgic rush--there are very few older games I want to play again which don't run on my 11700K and RTX 3080 either natively through Windows or with a GoG copy so it's really just for the flash to the past.
I bought 10x Pentiums E5800's (C2D) on fleebay. I've put them all on my ASRock 4CoreDual-Sata2, and 4 of them could run 4.5GHz with bsel mod for voltage and FSB.
I think it's way better processor due to raw speed it can run at with x16 multiplayer (every motherboard can do 280-290MHz FSB), and 2MB of cache this Pentium has it's perfect for XP era.
I have one E5800 clocked at 4.5GHz in setup with Abit Fatal1ty FP-IN9 SLi + 6GB of Geil DDR2 Black Dragon + 2x Gainward 9600GT (main Win XP rig). Two paired with my two ASRock 4CoreDual-SATA2 for those sweet AGP cards (one as backup), and one laying in socket of fully boxed Abit IP35 Pro, waiting for my future Crossfire build :).
You have some nice builds :) I'm not that much into overclocking, because if I need more performance I can pick some newer parts, but mainly because I really don't want my components to have a shorter lifespan.
I'm planning to build a test system for AGP cards, with an AsRock 775Dual-Vsta, and I'll be going with a Core2 Duo E6600.
@@MidnightGeek99 It's water cooled with Cooler Master Liquid Master 120mm Lite, and plenty of airflow in the case. Generally if you keep voltage around 1.45V and temps in check (around 70* max) with these C2D chips, you will be completely fine, and they will work for years to come. Also e5800 cost peanuts these days also. If one fail, you can bin another 5 CPU's waiting for their turn to go inside the rig.
@@Cpt_Wolf I'm more worried about the motherboard :)
@@MidnightGeek99 It's Abit Fatal1ty F-190HD is the one that's complete crap. I had one years ago and it was really picky on memory that it wanted to work with. I had one also recently, and it decided to explode it's VRM working with stock e5800. Fatal1ty FP-IN9 SLi on the other hand no problems what so ever, but to work with 45nm CPU's it need latest bios for that board (beta / bios id:18). As a side note it took me a bit to find it on the web, because official Abit website has only dead links, and on top of that it ends on bios id:16 which despite description won't work with e5800. With plenty of air flow VRM on this motherboard should be ok. On the other hand and same breath avoid F-190HD like a plague.
I remember my gaming PC build in late 2006, running windows xp. Core2duo e6600, 4gb ram, abit aw9d-max, 8800GTX. LG n2200P crt monitor.

Fast C2D or C2Q are perfect Xp machines.
My XP machine will be C2Q preferably Q6600, and if i can find HD3870
That was my build back in days after that i moved to Windows 7 and i7 2600k.
Core2 Duo E8600 is a beast good cooler and it can be overclocked to insanity
Thanks for pinup still watching the video and that cooler well you chose well :)
"Fast C2D or C2Q are perfect Xp machines."
I agree!
The HD 3870 is a very nice card, it has around 80%-90% of the 8800 GT's performance, and it has a good design when it comes to power draw and cooling.
Considering that I have some Crossfire ready boards, I was thinking of building a system around HD 3870 + HD 3850 :)
@@MidnightGeek99
i have P45T-AD3 Black series that i got 3 years ago but never got time to build proper C2Q machine.
HD3850 well that i had back in 07 and that card served well.
it was good price and good performance.
@@MidnightGeek99In order for Crossfire not to generate micro-stutters, the motherboard must support Crossfire in pcie x8 / x8 mode. Motherboards with x8 / x4 mode are not suitable. If you use two graphics cards with different clock speeds, Crossfire will sync with the slowest card.
That cpu cooler is way overkill.
You probably could use it passive.
I have a E8400 running @ 3.6 Ghz with a simple intel cooler, (with a copper core tough).
Great build tough.
Thanks. The cooler is overkill, I could go silent, but the fan is really quiet, so I will not see any difference in noise.
Maybe I will get a flower type cooler for this, and use the Ninja for more demanding CPUs.

Also got the E8600 but oc to 4.4ghz on a asus striker extreme, 4gb 1033mhz ddr2 running at 1200mhz cl5 and a 8800 gtx with win xp. Really like it.
Do you need the 4.4 oc, or is just for fun?
@@MidnightGeek99 Faster cpu gives shorter load times, more fps and better experience overall. I like my games at a steady 75fps. But yes also for fun. The cpu can outperform a q6600. E8600 does not get very hot so its perfect for oc.
I'd have a Xeon E5450, low latency 2GB DDR2 800 (friend randomly gave me a kit in 2009 - and first used it in 2016), a Asus P5Q Deluxe and a PCX 5750 for XP gaming if the board hadn't become unstable with more than 1GB of RAM. It was never the same after overclocking my QX6850. Which was a shame as it allowed me to use any LGA775 Pentium 4, so I could have swapped the CPU if games gave me grief.
That 1 GB RAM issue is strange, have you tried just a 2 GB stick?
@@MidnightGeek99 It originally allowed me to run 8GB at 1066. The board was just on its last legs. It had already lost its onboard audio in sparks.
@@dabombinablemi6188 I just boxed up my Asus P5Q Deluxe w/ a QX-9650 and 8 GB DDR2-1066. I never used it and I need the case for an i7-8700k build. I should just unload it on someone.
@@AtariBorn You'd get a decent amount selling it - prices have gone up a lot (and I'd end up modding it to take my Xeon E5450). I myself was only ever into LGA775 after getting a free P5K-VM and pairing it with my $5 C2D E8500 and 650ti for overclocking. Not much nostalgia for the platform due to having had my Mum's first 2 PC (1987-89 and 2003) then buying an i5 4440 machine - which was my first PC with a GPU.
I'm going to build a dual boot XP/win7 machine with an E8600 also, plus a Radeon HD4890 and 4GB Mushkin DDR2 1066. I also got a 19" LG LCD that has a button for 4:3 1024x768 resolution with black bars on the sides, I think it's a nice compromise being able to switch from 1366x768 to 1024 when needed.
I've wanted to make a build using the HD 4890, but unfortunately the card has artefacts: ruclips.net/video/emJiCo74zCU/видео.html
I also have an LCD that can do 4:3, and indeed, is very nice to have more options.
@@MidnightGeek99 that's a shame. My 4890 is a MSI Cyclone with a huge cooler and it cost me only 20 euros! I tested it on a motherboard with drivers and some games and it's fine. Now I only need some time to build the PC, maybe on Christmas. Oh the fun that awaits me! :)
I actually built a windows xp ,,Overkill" pc, here are the components:
Asus P5B
Intel core 2 duo e8400 3ghz
2gb RAM DDR2 667mhz
AMD Radeon HD 5770 1gb GDDR5
Thermaltake tr2-500
160gb SATA 7200rpm Hard Disk (In AHCI mode)
A Floston PC case
It works very fast, what I have to do is to install drivers and games, it will be fun.
An excellent system for XP, and the HD 5770 is such a nice card, somehow better than the 5850 and 5870, better as in a better choice for XP.
@@MidnightGeek99 I know, but that's all I have, but I don't know if I should use the x64 edition or the normal edition (x32), but I think the 64x windows xp has more accessibility and features.
@@Kilgore2307 Use the x86 (32-bit) version, more stable and better compatibility with drivers and other apps.

the 750ti would both allow you to run your GPU much cooler and at the same time will give you a nice perf improvement for a pretty cheap cost.

I have Q9550+GTX275 for top Win XP gaming, now I am testing GTX460 which still has drivers for XP. Some games from like 1999-2001 were already corrupt on P4 era computers and drivers, so it's wasting of time to trying to make it work on some top Win XP computer, you just need different computer for such games. I found out that Win 2000 has much better compatibility with late Win 9x games than XP, so I am using Win 2000 for games like AvP1, NFS5 etc...these games are really hard to make it work.
I would definitely stay with HW from preUEFI era, later UEFI MBs already have a lot of problems with XP. P35 is pretty good chipset, I had MSI P35 Platinum Combo, unfortunately few ram slots were damaged and I finished it completely while trying to solder new slots. Now I have some ordinary cheap P43 chipset MB from Asus and it works totaly fine.
I really don't recommend combination of socket 775 and DDR3 rams, there was a lot of problems with stability and you won't even notice any improvement in performance with DDR3, but if you really want DDR3, I recommend to find some old ones with no XMP profiles, it should have standard 1333 MHz, standard CL and standard voltage, NO XMP profiles, these parameters must be native, that's only way how to be sure it's gonna be stable with DDR3.
I also have C2D E8600 (or 8500, I am not sure now) but some very late Win XP games already can benefit from 4 cores. When I overclock Q9550 to 3.3 GHz or more, it has the same single and dual thread performance as top dual core, so why not use quad core when I can.

@@MidnightGeek99 Thanks, I've been building dedicated XP gaming machines since I stopped using XP as my main OS back in 2012. So I've had a long time to collect components. Plus I hardly ever sell anything so I still have lots from back in the day when it was current.
I struggle to keep up these days. The last PC I bought all new was in 2014 with a 4790k. I've had no reason to upgrade since. I also have a x79 PC with an overclocked E5-1680v2 which is plenty powerful enough for me. I used to upgrade every couple of years but I've sort of lost interest because of the high prices. I personally like to use old pc's for games that are no longer supported on modern hardware (Example: Prototype the game. Will only run on 4 core cpus). I have a pc specifically for those games.
Well, I've started this channel because I had some games that did not work ok on Windows 10, and I''ve decided to buy some old components and build a system.

Same, though I find I can usually buy more modern versions of those games through Steam and GoG that work. I mostly build 2000s PCs for the nostalgia rush. Honestly the only game I've tried to play which won't run on Windows 11 either natively or buying a newer copy of is Dagger's Rage but if I load that up in my Win98 VM it plays perfectly.
Top quality content.
Thanks :D
Hmmm, I think the issues that you've had in those games were related to the drivers.
For my XP system I'm using a Radeon HD 6850 (more like a Windows Vista/7 card) and I've played Half Life 1, NFS MW, Doom 3 and no issues at all. I might try NFS U2 to see what happens.
Another interesting thing, about what you've said at the beggining of the video, is related to Quake 4 and Doom 3.
On a RX 580 Doom3 (the vanilla edition) worked perfectly, but Quake 4 (the Steam version) had to be adjusted from the INI files. Now, on a RX 6650XT Quake4 plays like sh@t.
I will let you know in a few weeks/month if I also have issues with an overkill XP system, as I've just received an I5-4460 with which I also intend to pair a powerfull videocard.
Until then, If you are kind enough, please write me a list of the games you had issues with. I might try them on the Radeon HD6850.
On the other hand, with a Radeon 3850 Quake 3 works excelent, but Return to Castle Wolfenstein makes the videocard's driver to crash :). This system also uses Windows XP.
Pretty much the drivers, yes, they gave me a lot of headaches, even with trying to run MSI Afterburner.
I don't know man, life is to short not to use hardware closer to period correct as possible :)
You have to test a lot of different driver versions with nvidia cards from that perior of time, but don't think that ATI/AMD cards were better, I could writte whole book about that. 😀 With my AGP x1650, I tried like 5 drivers, one was saying that GPU has no VRAM, another had artifacts in FarCry (that was happening even with some nvidia drivers) and it was even worce with HD4650 AGP. But I noticed that ATI cards had better compatibility with games like AvP1 which is totaly currupt on later nvidia drivers.
I use a GTX 580 which is more than enough for almost all winXP games, minus the real late ones like prototype and web of shadows... they run just not as good as the older ones ( thats what win7 is for ) Crysis runs ok with a GTX 580 but better to play them on newer computers. :)
Crysis does not work well on my GTX 1650, so...:)
nice buiild i use the x1900 xtx or x1950 xtx gddr4 as its the fastest dx9 card ever produced
The X1900 / 1950 XTX are a little faster than the 7900 GTX, the reason why I prefer the Nvidia card is less heat and way less noise :)

I’ve tried a GeForce 8800gts, gts 250, 9600gt and the current main GPU is Radeon HD4870
If you've had the same problem with both the video cards it's weird! Try to use different settings for textures, see if it works.
I like a lot your English accent.
Thanks :)
Where did you get your games from on windows xp?
GoG and original CDs.
Lol my Windows XP PC is: Intel i5 2500, GTX 960 2GB GDDR5, 8 GB DDR3 also for Windows 7 64b. 256 GB SSD for Windows XP and 480 SSD for Windows 7 and 1 TB SATA 7.2rpm for game's. Creative Audigy ZS and all games runs at high-Ultra high with FAA perfect. Btw the LG monitor is awesome.
This was also my plan with the i5 2400, to have both XP and 7, but I've changed my mind!
Yeah, the LG is a dream come true...it was free :D
So you don't get glitches on this videocard as on this video?
Perfect
Thanks!!!
You know shit's getting real when the Eastern European starts whipping out wooden cooking utensils..
:))))))
Akchually flatron can handle 1024x768 at 117hz or even 119. I still keep such monitor in the wardrobe))
Indeed, it can run higher frequencies than what Windows is showing as supported, but I had some issues when trying that.
For example, 1024x768 @ 100Hz runs perfect, as soon as I use higher frequencies, the monitor will display some weird but very noticeable flickers from time to time.
Wouldn't a gts450 be a better gpu?
It's way newer for this build :)
do you really need that ginormous radiator for a 65w cpu?
Now, but the alternative at that time was the stock cooler :)
Thanks
10x a lot :)
Midnight Geek : I have my Windows XP last of the titans monster rig compiled out of :
AMD FX 8350 (official chipset driver support for Win XP is still on the Gigabytes motherboards site)
32 GB DDR3 1600 MH/T
Asus Strix GTX 980 4GB DirectCU (that was the last modern Nvidia GPU to have support for Windows XP officially)
an SSD tweaked for Win XP
With the 980 you can play with AA transparency, 16xAA and 8xSS looks great.
Too bad the XP drivers don't support DSR (Dynamic Super Resolution), or do they?
@@MidnightGeek99 True....but DSR isn't supported in Win XP. But the fact that I can play Win XP era games with my GTX 980 is the only reason that I've kept it and will keep it for years to come :).To me this is the fastest Win XP PC one can build before it all went to Win 7.
@@lflyr6287 I see. The FX 8350, or even something higher is something that I don't have right now, but really desire.
Why not just put the CPU cooler fan on the opposite side of the cooler, and pull the air through it?
Well, I like to mount this cooler in this way, to take some heat from the GPU also, and cool it a little bit.
In this particular case, the E8400 is really cool, some extra heat from the 7900 GTX won't do it any harm :)
@@MidnightGeek99 I understand that. I just noticed the fan could be mounted in multiple positions. I bet running multiple fans, pointed in the same direction would be possible, with a splitter, of course.
A gtx 265 is ok for most Windows XP games?
Yes, of course, you will have decent framerates even in Crysis, 1920x1080.
@@MidnightGeek99 Mulțumesc :)
@@Hakan89 Cu placere :)
Whats the most demanding game on WinXP ?
It depends on how you define "game on Windows XP", but if you consider that being only DX9 games, then FEAR is the most demanding.
@@MidnightGeek99 i mean the game that works on winXP. I was thinking Witcher 2 is is most demanding game you can run on WinXP
@@ViperBenchmarks I see. In this case, I don't really know :)
I'm sure that some modern game sold by GoG would be more demanding than Witcher 2.
do you use win xp pro x64 in dual boot or not? then 8 gib of ram do not make sense instead of dual channel...
No, for it i5 system I have 8 GB because I want to have dual channel, and I don't have 4 GB of DDR3 DL.
For the Core2 system I was using only 2 GB.
haha GTA 3 is reason why i built "medium" XP computer with 512MB GPU 🤗 My XP beast is too fast (i7-870 + GTX960 4GB) i had like 2000 FPS in GTA 3 invisible menu and game not playable 😁 With E8400 + HD5450 512MB is GTA3 silky smooth and running without issues. 🥰
Yes, it's good to have more XP systems, because "the fastest" is not always the best choice for some games.
7900 GTX is ok for Windows XP :)
@@MidnightGeek99 Это и понятно, на XP запускали и на AGP видеокартах, но ведь я хотел донести что на доработанном пк можно будет спокойно пользоваться Windows 10 так как XP просто устарела

That was one of our go-to games for LAN parties back in the day. Many energetic late nights hunting each other down, I'd bet I could still play a mean Praetorian!
I used to have that motherboard. It was really good. But I gave it away a few years ago.
I'll need to test the overclocking performance, but in rest, the board is awesome.
@@MidnightGeek99 I managed to overclock about 1ghz back then so it was good for me anyway. It was at the time a very expensive board. I paid I think about €160 for it. Now of course even the cheapest AM5 motherboards cost more but then most motherboards were around 50 bucks. It certainly had a lot of copper on it. So much that they decreased it in later revisions compared to the 1.0.
@@wertywerrtyson5529 Reducing copper is unforgivable!
Should have tried Counter Strike and I.G.I too😃

1. Why didn't you just put the Geforce 7900 GTX in your Sandy Bridge system and call it a day? It would probably have solved your graphics problems.
2. If you want to change the resolution in Dungeon Siege to something higher, just edit the file "My Documents\Dugeon Siege\DungeonSiege.ini".

this is Windows Vista High End PC
Not quite, with the exception of the CPU, which was chosen instead of an overclocked E6600, all components appeared before Windows Vista :)
It is not an high end computer. Just a low end - mid range computer (for its time) but eventually overkill for Win Xp gaming. Do not confuse overkill computer (for what you do with it) with high end computer.
LE: Sorry, I commented without watching the whole video. You really made an high end PC after all (the second one), or something close to it.

No, because Crysis is a Vista game :)

Really similar setup to a PC I have in a modern system with LED fans. I’ve got an E8600 paired with an 8800 GT 512mb running Win XP.
Core2 is inevitable :)
Your 8800 GT is around 50% faster than the 7900 GTX, if I'm not mistaken, the 8000 series was a huge leap forward.
But do you know why I prefer the 7000 series?
Because the 8000 series had unified shaders, and I'm stuck in 2005, when people were debating 32 unified shaders vs 32 pixel shaders!
Core2 quad +nvidia gt9800 would be better
Maybe, but 9800 GT is a card from 2008, I wanted a DX 9 card.
