- Abandoned Dollar General - New Castle, PA. Closed for a newer location which would open just up the street. Unlike this old location which was just a regular Dollar General, the new one is a Dollar General Market which has fresh food in it as opposed to the normal selection at regular Dollar General stores. What was this store before it was DG?

I never thought I'd see the day where I would see an abandoned Dollar General. Those things are on every street corner.

A lot of the older ones close to modernize into the new design stores.
There was an abandoned Dollar General up the street from me with the logo still up.
They moved down the street. Into their own building

Definitely gives me Blockbuster vibes, with that awning too. Those were usually seen a Blockbuster locations. I could even imagine the text logo being where the store sign used to be.

@KW-ew7ll I know this Dollar General isn’t original. I know it had to be something else before. If this was a Movie Gallery or something else it obviously closed before 2009

There was a Dollar General on Woodward Avenue, just North of Clairmount,in the inner city of Detroit. After, when Dollar General Closed Permanently. Now, the old Dollar General is a Bar,and Grill. 9:05
I know of a Dollar General that took over a former Walgreens. They kept the same architecture and renovated the inside.
I know one of those too, in New Albany Indiana.

Wallie, our DG was turned into City Hall and Police Department and on the other side of the highway is our DG Market not far from where DG was. Really enjoyed your video.

This was also a Movie Gallery, because Movie Gallery bought Video Update in 2001, But Movie Gallery closed in 2005, and Dollar General opened in 2008

My local Dollar general in owingsville relocated up the street to a DG market as well
if youre ever in the area theres an abandoned chuck e cheese down in hagerstown md, right by the mall. you could also do a followup to the kmart vid you made here
This building used to be a video store, but I can’t remember the name of it. Not Family Video, because that was right down the street. And not Blockbuster, either, because I don’t think New Castle ever had one. There is also an abandoned DG in nearby New Wilmington which has a DG Market that was built across the road from it. Dinky little Grove City has two Dollar Generals! I think there are so many of them because most of the people around here can’t afford to shop anywhere else!

I used to live in New Castle, Pennsylvania for a while...That Dollar General that he's at is on Wilmington Road (Route18) in New Castle....I lived in a house not too far from there....

This doller general building started life in the late 50s or early 60s an mens clothing store. When it closed, a video store occupied the building for 3-4 years before video tapes went out of fad. DG opened just s few years ago, before DG markets came here.
We had a family dollar a few months ago and now it's a dollar general so now we have 4 dollar generals with it a 10 minute radiuos of any direction from where I live

Our Dollar General caught on fire about a year or two ago, was just recently demolished. I believe they are rebuilding, haven't been past in months as I rarely go to that side of my town (Cairo, NY).

The problem is it's not exactly abandoned they planned the closure cuz they built a brand new building a quarter mile up the road that sells meat and produce.
Dg has been building like crazy all over the country in the middle of nowhere.
I can give a little contacts on this video as well cuz I live in this town this Dollar general is technically abandoned but they actually closed down when they built the new location about a 1/4 mile up the road on the left. It has fresh produce and meat. This one was here for about 20 years

I don't know what it is about mirrored ceilings but all I ever think of is car dealerships or the classic Denny's diners when I see them.
I worked at this location from 2012-2014. It was, at one time, a video store. We used to be able to see the logo through the DG logo but it's been so long I dont remember the name. Lots of memories here. In my time there we had two vehicles crash through the same location (to the left of the main entrance). And yeah all that was left to see were the backrooms and there wasnt much to see. Enjoyed the trip down memory lane, thanks.

Looking through the newspaper archives, you're correct. Beyond that, was an H&R Block, a printing store and an auto part store in various incarnations. The archives don't go beyond the 1990s unfortunately (newspaperarchives apparently does but you can't browse without a subscription or a trial)

I'm glad you didn't go in. Most likely if the lights are on. The alarm system is to. These days there's a lot abandoned everything. Even Banks. It's impossible to run a business and make a profit when theft/violence/scams and a lack of employees are at a all time high.

That is a very rare sight. I thought they were in every city.(except mines). I have been to a Dollar General once and they were ok, I don't know about you but I like Dollar Tree way better. I think it is sad that they are closing stores.
DG bought Family Video when they went under. Sold several that were too small or too close to a DG to convert.
That was either an old BBV or Movie Gallery
(Seems like a BBV, simply because the Socia Franchise did have a store in New Castle), and the "yellow back wall"...plus the foyer.
Could be a "Movie Gallery"...but did they have a store in NC?
Easy way to identify? Check the wall. If it is "walled in" where the old BBV return box was "walled in"..."rebricked"? Then it was a BBV
We have a couple of old abandoned DG's beside grocery stores. They both have been moved down the street, made into standalone stores, and one of the new ones is even a market. I'm in the western part of NC.
I’m in western NC too and I’ve noticed a few of those myself, most of those have relocated to new stand alone stores, at least in my area.

When I was a kid it was a Robert Hall store then it was an autoparts store, cant remember which one, then it was briefly a video rental store

It was a Video Update before Dollar General. Down the road where the car dealership is, there was a Hollywood Video, then the other Dollar General was Family Video
If you look at Google Street view you can see cars parked outside of Dollar General in New Castle PA on Route 18. I thinking that it was open a long time ago. I heard that Google doesn't update Street view very often so you can see pictures that were 5 years old.

This was originally a video store. First it was First Row Video, then it was MOOVIES! And Video Update.
so this place was called Video Update prior to DG getting it Not sure if it was a former Blockbuster Video Update took over but in 2013 on google street view on the side road you can see the label scar on the awning

They moved down the street and put in a brand new DG market. By Ollie’s they have a DG aswell.

My dog wrecked my truck into that dollar general sign 20 years ago. While I was in liquor store he knocked it out of gear.

I seen a picture posted on another dollar General in the area and it was of this Dollar General and it the sign Infront of this Dollar General said "Closed for remodel".and that was 3 months ago now. Hope that helps

I used to work there and so did my sister and the alarm isn’t active the back of the building caught fire from water damage in the roof that caused electrical fire from exposed electrical

The last time I walked into a Dollar General which was months ago (probably at least last year), they had a sign up saying no bags. I can't be mad in a way, it comes from a good intent, but it is an annoyance to people like me that aren't rbbing the place. If I'm walking/biking/etc. and have a bag, I'm taking my bag with me. I was thirsty so dealt with it in my last visit, but I will never return if I can help it. If you are gonna request for people to leave bags up front, the least you can do is have a locker just for me to lock it inside of until I leave. Otherwise, GTFO, I'm not risking my bag being stolen over your garbage store that encourages such behavior.

I've checked, it has always been a dollar general since 2009 at least
Dollar General had been here since 2008, but they closed in 2023
