I miss the times when restaurants were unique. Now they’re all shoe boxes like you say. Love your channel. It’s a great mix of closed businesses and railroads, which is a cool combo.

The purple is probably for the high school colors. The Plum Mustangs.
Sad that the only time I hear about Plum since moving out of Pittsburgh is when another gas line explodes in another neighborhood. It’s very scary!
We ate at this BK a few times when we first moved to this side of Pittsburgh years ago.

An awesome video, Wallie! 👍👍👍👍 I really like the old school aesthetics on fast food restaurants. Here in Weirton, WV we used to have our BK located on Three Springs Drive, where DQ is currently. Here in Weirton, BK is currently located on Freedom Way downtown on the south end.

While the restaurant per se only closed a couple weeks back, this location was drive through only for at least past year. The nice lady at the window during breakfast hours said there was structural damage to the dining area, but the employee area was safe enough.

That is a really old BK built before they had drive thrus as that one is an add on. This building was probably built around 1970 when they used to have wooden accents between areas of exterior brick. The dining room has been updated much more recently.

Ah yes, the BK Lounge on Golden Mile. Honestly, this location always seemed pretty superior as opposed to other ones around me. Food always was pretty good. I remember one time I was inside during my break between classes when I was at CCAC, and they had country and Christmas music playing. No, not country-Christmas music, legitimately two separate music streams playing over each other. It sounded like hell. I never realized that it was purple/gold inside (for the Plum Mustangs). I wish more restaurants or businesses in general matched their interior designs to colors of the local community. You don't see that much anymore.

Shoebox is usually owned by a real estate company.
They lease to the company currently occupying the space.
Companies don't want to risk buying property because it is so expensive. It also limits the liability of the company. If the property company is responsible for maintaining the property, it is them that gets sued if someone is hurt.
And with companies going under, they don't want to spend any money they don't have to.
The CEO and board members and investors want maximum quarterly returns and bonuses.
The less you pay for the monthly payments the more the 1% gets.
Red Lobster is a perfect example of what is happening with companies in America.
They are stealing every last penny as the economy collapse continues.

All along the New York State Thruway they had service plazas that had the big named companies like McDonald's and Burger King but they also had Roy Rogers and they increased the rent for the new plazas they were going to build to replace the existing ones and the companies like Burger King and Roy Rogers didn't want to renew their lease and the last time I was up the Thruway from suffern to Saratoga all of the plazas were in various states of rebuild and the ones that were complete had spaces for Burger King but Burger King wouldn't pay the new high price for the lease so they bailed out as did all of the other big companies that were going to occupy the plaza rest area
The names they had for who was coming were all of these tiny specialty food places that probably won't be here a year from now
But it was startling to walk into this brand new rest area plaza near Kingston and there were no businesses all spaces for them and even the equipment but no businesses no merchandise no food no nothing
And they had the signs up that the plazas were energy-efficient renewable solar lighting and 0 foot print and as I came to the door and pressed the button for the disabled door to open the motor did not engage because there wasn't power because it was night time and I guess the batteries that were on the backup had failed and as I walked in I noticed how incredibly dim it was because the lights were solar-powered and led and even though they were all lit up it was very dim inside
I went to go to the bathroom and unlike the old plazas that had the bathrooms either right as you walked in or halfway through the plaza I kept looking for where the bathrooms were and I went down the corridor in the center of the plaza and I'm still looking for where these bathrooms are expecting to see the large men's room and women's room and there weren't large bathrooms for multiple people
I saw the big handicap accessible doors which again did not work for the first ones that said pregnant people, then the ones that said family only, then I saw the ones that said non-binary and Gender Neutral, and I remember from Europe where they had unisex bathrooms and even in America in the 70s we had unisex bathrooms but seeing all of these specialty bathrooms that were very large they were all handicapped accessible and only for one person with the exception of the family which had one regular size toilet and one small toilet for a child
They all had the big fold-down changing tables, and they were all very large, but nowhere was there the old style big men's room where you had five or six urinals side by side and five or six stalls behind them
They don't have those anymore and they didn't have any restrooms single ones labeled men or women male or female they only had the unisex or I guess non-binary or gender neutral is now the unisex I'm not sure
    But I used the non-binary
I was the only one in the entire plaza it was around 4:00 a.m. and I shudder to think what these places must look like during the rush hour when you have a 100 people a minute that need to use the bathroom
The Lines must be incredible waiting for a bathroom, and I imagine they have the state police there to make sure there aren't any fights because I'm sure people when they see someone go into a gender-neutral or non-binary bathroom that they don't look like they could be gender-neutral or non-binary that they would have people yelling at them
I have long hair and I'm feminine and so even though I'm a big guy a lot of people all my life assumed that I was gay and I'm not but I have been friends with gay people and I worked at an adult bookstore and an adult movie theater and I have no issues with anybody and I've always supported the lgbtq plus people, but I know a lot of people take it really personally that they see this type of thing with the bathrooms where they don't have men's rooms or woman's rooms anymore and they didn't even have a dedicated disabled like they had in some of the old plazas but since all of the bathrooms are single bathrooms and all handicap accessible because that's the law it's not needed anymore to have a dedicated handicap bathroom
But I was so upset that the lighting was so dim and the handicap doors had no power because the entire plaza was solar powered
Solar is great, but I think they should add wind power and more batteries to keep the plaza running at night.
And the deep fryers and the electric grills and the other equipment that the retailers need for keeping beverages cold and for keeping food Frozen and refrigerated and cooking I don't know how they're going to be able to power all of that with only solar
The Thruway is a lot busier than it was in the 70s.
Even with the tolls being so high.
The Albany to Harriman toll used to be under a dollar.
Even in the 80s it was under 3 dollars
Now it is almost 20 dollars
It is a lot of money for the average person
I think once the VMT System goes online and people have to pay an extra dollar per mile for every mile on every street, I think they believe that most people will carpool or not drive.
I think they are wrong. I don't see America becoming like China where everyone rides a bicycle
And they are going to require bicycles to be registered and insured and pay a fee per mile, so I don't know what is going to happen.
America in 2030 is going to be a lot different than the America today.
