    I enjoyed your opening dialogue about the special aura that surrounded McDonald's in the 90's/early 2000's. I won an elementary school fundraising contest where the person from 3rd,4th, and 5th grade who raised the most money got to take a limo ride to the fancy McDonald's in the closest big city with the principal and the other winning participants. I ended up being a winner all 3 years in a row and it was MAGIC every single time because of the reward of those golden arches, great nuggets, and the BALL PIT! Keep up the great content.

    This store would date from somewhere in the 1994-1996 timeframe, so it's not even all that old. It's amazing to see how much decay can happen in so little time.

    • @brendapannell3310
      @brendapannell3310 Год назад +2

      I agree with your timeframe. The 3 window drive through is part of what points to then. The 3 window (face to face) drive through was a test program in 1995-1996. The McDonald's I was part of the opening crew of was part of the test program in Nevada. We also had the same menu boards.
      The McCafe area was definitely an add on.
      This was a small store, though!

    Abandoned McDonald’s used to be a rarity. I worked, as a teen, at the second oldest McD’s in Erie on East Lake Road (at end of Franklin Avenue). Used to be an original design, outside walk up before enclosed dining room. It was nautical themed and with red, white and blue tables and chairs. Never updated. So sad when it closed due to decline of GE and closure of Hammermill Paper Co. Eventually torn down.

    Going to Mcdonalds in the 80's and 90's was a treat. The playground, the happy meal toys, even the food seemed better. It's not like that at all now.

      Its very saddening to see the path that Mcdonalds is taking.. Their new "Modernized" locations feel so bland and sterile now with cheap cooperate design

  • @saxman112
    @saxman112 2 года назад +35

    Jeez, not only is it sad to see this pre-shoebox design McDonald's just rotting like this soon to be torn down, but also the insane amount of vandalism as well. Even if a place is closed, that still does NOT give one the right to break into it and do whatever they like. Sure, it's going to be torn down someday most likely, but still, no reason, absolutely no reason to do that!

    • @saxman112
      @saxman112 2 года назад

      @Bryan Dunn Yup, and I knew it would be…. In the end, I know it’s just a building, but I absolutely hate how buildings for these restaurants and others like it are just bland, boring shoeboxes now without much character. Heck, the Taco Bell not too far from me is undergoing such a transformation now after retaining its 90s self for all these years.

  • @IK_4
    @IK_4 Год назад +5

    I had forgotten about this phase when McDonald's looked like this. I grew up in the 80's and 90's with the big slated roof style McDonald's. This style didn't last for long but it was better than the sterile looking ones today.

  • @nicolemacpherson3908

    There's no saving this. It would be better to demolish and start from scratch. And yes, I agree, I hate disrespect from others. And just like you pointed out, take your anger out on an old pillow or something you don't want anymore, not on places that gave us happy memories.

    2:54 I used to work at a McDonald's and they have a booklet for employees on how to clean a playland, play place. Mine had an outdoor playland, but the playland was removed and turned into an outdoor seating area years before I started working at McDonald's. Plus, it was down the street from a major high school so you would have to worry about high school students coming into the playland and creating mischief since some McDonald's restaurants, you didn't need access to the inside of the restaurant to get to the playland. I believe outdoor playlands are now extinct and only indoor McDonald's playlands survive. No McDonald's left with an outdoor playland in the United States.

    @peterjszerszen 2 года назад +10

    This is from about 1993-1995 based on their design progression. Probably closer to 1995 based on the third window. Those third windows were an experiment from about 1995-2000 where they did away with the speaker and you ordered directly to a person. It obviously would have originally had the "double mansard" roof but it's McD policy to alter the roofs and paint/strip all signage when they close (as if you can't tell what it was anyway).

    I don't know why Wallie withheld the location so I won't totally spoil it, but I will say it's in Kentucky along I-75, well south of where I live in the state. I actually kinda remember this place when it was open during my travels in Kentucky with my grandma, I don't think I ever ate there though. It appears to me that they cut off the road's connection to the main road, and while they built a road behind it, neither the McDonalds or BP could survive (Arby's and Love's are better at their respective services anyway). Thanks for the video, Wallie! Stay Awesome!

    I reckon this McDonald's has been abandoned for many years, based on the old design on the McDonald's bag and old style menu board. Not to mention the sheer amount of overgrown bushes and weeds that are blocking the doorways and drive thru windows, vines growing through the floor, up the walls and through the ceiling, missing ceiling tiles etc. This McDonald's is beyond repair and will probably be demolished at some point in time.

    80's and 90's McDonald's were a true sight to behold. I can recall in the late 80's; maybe '88-'89 that the local McDonald's had plenty of windows, along with a Playplace attached. The dining room was white tile with Red/Orange subway tile; slightly similar to what's in this very video.
    It was a magnificent building with lots of booths/tables. Plenty of secluded corner booths to sneak away and begin enjoying your McNuggets, Coke's, or Super Sized Fries. McDonald's then was a true treat. Nothing like they are today! The particular location I speak of was renovated in the early 00's, such a shame.

    Wallie, you spoke many, many harsh truths in this one! First, you are correct about the fact that when we have nothing but shoebox designs left that all of these places will look boring. Absolutely no character in shoebox designs. It's hard enough trying to find a mission style Taco Bell these days! If you have one near you, treasure it! Second and most important, you are right about how vandals give urbexers a bad name. The young kids and vandals in general who do treat these awesome places with such utter disrespect are not part of our community of retail enthusiasts and urbexers, but sadly their actions reflect on our community regardless.

      Correct. The final generation Mansard buildings (Mid/late 1990s) dispensed with the mansard treatments for all but the front of the building. perhaps they knew their days were numbered and it would make renovation much easier. These ones also had the very large windows and were usually painted from day one. Probably because they were just using cheap common brick to cut costs. The interiors were often bare-bones as well.

    just to let you know there is an epic McDonalds that closed in the last two years in Charlston Wv the west side next to the old Kmart now a van rental place they have removed the branding out of the restaurant and even the arches that was part of the building but left the sign still in great condition for how long I don't know.

    Surprisingly this McDonalds has only been closed since 2015. It closed because when they relocated the road they lost their direct access to the interstate because the state wanted to reduce the amount of accidents because of Loves and moved it up the road about 10 miles to have the interstate access. I actually heard someone was interested in reopening it.

    Can't even get any food or drink the quest continues. Despite the decay of the building and vandalism the old school look is nice to see. Since everything is a shoebox and so damn minimal.

    2 things.... Did you see the story about the woman who redid her bathroom and discovered someone had dumped their McDonald's lunch in her wall?? The bag was a 1950s style and still had fries in it.
    #2 you should have saved that car radio for me. I've been wanting to replace the one in my Black Sheep. Could have just slid it right in. 😂🤣😂🤣😂🤣

      LOL! No I didn't see that story! That's bizarre! Also, if you want a new car radio in, let me know when we come down next month. I'm pretty good at wiring those in. Just have to have the right parts.

    That's an old McDonalds. Judging by the weed growth and that the drive thru has the menu board holder as opposed to the screens... It probably had an order screen on the mic/speaker pole, which explains why that is missing.. I'd guess this one closed 10+ years ago or didn't get renovated. Also, why is a lot of graffiti just pen15s?

    There is a McD's with this same floor plan pretty close to here. It's up and running but was interesting to see one just like it in this kind of condition. I did a video on an abandoned McDonalds in Carson City, Nevada (ironically close to a Kmart that's closed and boarded up). It's not like this one. It's locked up solid and watched. Had a huge room for the play area that was empty. On my abandoned videos, I put a disclaimer slide up that explains the whole UrbEx idea/motto. We're not there to destroy, steal, etc and leaving it just as we found it. It's sad that people just want to destroy and dump their trash.

    Kind of surreal to see this sort of post-apocolyptic vision of a place where I have stepped foot. It was kind of a victim of location. It was convenient but also inconvenient to sustain business. It's in an area that never got much other development and thus, more traffic

    This is the Mcds at Boonesboro exit in Kentucky off I-75 near Richmond. Yes, the BP next door is also closed. It close up a little later. This Mcds closed around 2013 I believe. It was a great Mcds. I went there many times, inside and through the drive-thru. It was a clean place to eat. Sad to see its condition here. It basically closed due to the revamping of the exit. It was really convoluted for traffic and change was needed, and this change impacted this Mcds and the BP next door, but these businesses were great in their day. The BP was only there for about 10 years. The Mcds may have been their maybe 15 years altogether. Anyway, I live in this county of the state and wanted to share the info with you. I've enjoyed your videos in my area. Your walk through the Clay's Ferry plaza is just a mile away at the next exit north. Take care.
