Dont believe this last post ! Before they could get a permit to sink, as a dive site, it would have to be stripped of all toxic substances. The Canadian Coast Gaurd has a new program called Vessels of Concern. The last legal owner is notified to remove the vessel, and if that has not occurred in a short time, the CCG will remove it, dismantled and disposed of. They then can Leagally Sue for cost recovery. Could easily bankrupt a person.
City of Vancouver is the ultimate troll. Approves 40 year lease, only grants 1 year operating permit. Much like how Vancouvers housing crisis began. They continuously denied housing developments until people started protesting for change then after a simple old house costs 2M they started letting developers do their thing. Oh Vancouver!

Watching this video took me back. I was a senior in high school in '86 and just a few weeks away from graduation. For our senior trip, our class went to Expo '86. It was a lot of fun and I remember visiting the McBarge with a group of good friends toward the end of the day. Sad to see what it's become but in my memories of that special time, it will always be perfect!
I would love to help put the project together if there are others interested. There are plenty of places where this could be very lucrative as a venue/location. PM me.

Here's an update as of 2019: In 2017, the barge's owners announced plans to convert it into an attraction called the Deep Discovery Centre.[10][11] An event was planned for 21 October 2017 to launch a crowdfunding campaign, but was cancelled due to weather concerns.[12] A petition to Vancouver City council to give the barge Historic Place Status received only 185 signatures. No mention has been made of a rescheduled event, its Facebook and Twitter have not been updated since 2017 and its RUclips account has been closed. Oof. Rest in peice you weird bargey thing.
YESSSS!!! I forgot the mcbarge existed and as always with your videos, it was fascinating, informative and well produced. thanks for producing one of my favourite web series ever! keep being awesome!
Out of curiosity, I googled for an update. As of March 2020, it was revealed that the McBarge is going to be a seafood restaurant. The owner mentioned in this video (Howard Meakin) said in the interview that he's just waiting for the right spot to anchor it.
4:02 - Hold on... They signed a 40-year lease for a six-month event? Those were some shrewd contract negotiations! Aside from that, this was quite an interesting video, and I'd love for a future follow-up on what happens with the structure. Nice work! :)
Greenpeace purchased the barge and renamed it the McVegan. It's now housing endangered species moored somewhere off the coast of Molokai. They stole the idea from some dude named Noah.
I live in Knoxville, TN where our 82 Worlds Fairs iconic staple is The Sunsphere. The structure still stands is well preserved and open to the public with several observation floors, a restaraunt, and a bar. Im sure this barge is just as iconic to the city of Vancouver as The Sunsphere is to Knoxville, but its a story of one stationary icon to one that floats. To me, restoration to this thing is in serious need in order to bring it up to codes and even install the latest outlets for usb and hdmi hook ups for the use of modern day technology, so the question is, how much would all this cost, and is it worth it? This reminds me a lot of saving the Love Boat from the iconic 80s t.v. series. The Princess remained for sale for quite awhile with no buyer until she was sent out to Italy to be scrapped due to the high costs of upgrading and renovations. Sadly, it was a sight to see on youtube videos, but I feel this barge should be a permanent fixture to its home of Vancouver if its to reconize a historical mark on that cities history. Nevertheless, city ordinances and simple requests of not wanting the barge there remain hurdles.
I remember eating there when I was a child. I have a picture somewhere of my dad, sister and I in front of what is now the Vancouver Science Center. I took a picture with my wife and family in the same spot last year. That McDonald's was so unique. I was four years old when expo 86 was happening
Me too! I was 9, and I remember sitting there with my dad too. Wow. Sad to see it's had a rough time since, I really do hope Meekin is able to bring his ideas to fruition and she's put in use once again. I'm glad I got to be part of history.
You really think McD's needs to pay for publicity ? They sell franchises 1st and hamburgers 2nd. A franchisee could buy it, pointless for the parent co.
@@Maples01 Yikes... You seem to miss the fact that in Canada they are divided into provinces and territories not states. Now you learned something today.
the water tight compartments that the titanic was supposed to be built with were actually never fully sealed, they were just walls that opened up on top to the next compartments. if the walls actually went all the way up to the ceiling like they were supposed to the titanic actually wouldnt have sank.
every second i look at it im looking at how it could be structured to grow plants amd farm oxygen, fruits and vegtables, because that would be a great little thing to have in a cove, an area where you; -dont get any plant growth -you can wear snorkel gear or make a oxygen pressurizer /use scuba equipment - keep vining plants - weild ladders to the outside so that every inch of it could be used -plant sea vegtables - keep fish docile and raise them - enjoy the great fishing spot
Yeah you'll get away from the zombies sure, but then theres deadly Molds, rodents, bee/wasp hives here and there. and its probably slowly sinking on top of that. yeah i'd take my chances on land or just go steal a better boat. that thing should just be disposed of in an environmentally friendly way of course. god only knows wtf that things made out of. its 75% asbestos most likely.
Verse 1) Out in Maple Ridge, where the Fraser flows, There's a tale of mystery that nobody knows. A floating dream from '86, left to fade away, But we set out on a quest, to find the ghost of yesterday. (Chorus) We're on the hunt for the McBarge, through the misty morning light, In the heart of the wilderness, we'll find it by tonight. A relic of the Expo, left to drift and roam, We're gonna bring it back, make that legend our own. (Verse 2) Through the cedar forests, and along the winding trails, With stories of the past, riding every gale. We hear the whispers calling, from the river's edge, Guided by the echoes, of the dreams they pledged. (Chorus) We're on the hunt for the McBarge, through the misty morning light, In the heart of the wilderness, we'll find it by tonight. A relic of the Expo, left to drift and roam, We're gonna bring it back, make that legend our own. (Bridge) Rusty chains and memories, beneath the moonlit sky, We're driven by a promise, we can't let it lie. In the stillness of the water, we see a shadow there, The McBarge waits in silence, like a ghost in the air. (Chorus) We're on the hunt for the McBarge, through the misty morning light, In the heart of the wilderness, we'll find it by tonight. A relic of the Expo, left to drift and roam, We're gonna bring it back, make that legend our own. (Outro) So here's to all the seekers, and the dreams left behind, In the waters of the Fraser, our destiny we'll find. The McBarge is our symbol, of hope that never fades, In the heart of Maple Ridge, where legends are made.
somebody is giving birth in the kitchen keeping everyone from producing the customers order, Hate it when that happens you have to wait so long for your food!
I live in St Louis Missouri and remember the riverboat McDonald's well. It was docked on the riverfront by the St Louis Arch. Basically every school who did a field trip downtown went to it.
Absolutely love your videos, the amount of work you're putting into it is really palpable. And you're not just going through a list of what's happened to the buildings, for example, the details of the decorations, the style of the interiors ... Excellent job sir !
Canada sucks they gave him a 40 year lease but they wouldn't let him operate a successful restaurant they should have just left it open where it was it would have been a big hit and bring people down to the waterfront
Actually, McDonald's should have just left it there to rot. Then when the city got tired of looking at it, McDonald's could have said "if you want it cleaned up, you can buy it from us".
Vince Roscoe I'm with you, buddy. I think we should pull our Chevrolet plant out of Canada, and pull all of our businesses out of other countries. We need to bring our jobs back to America. Let the rest of the world stop mooching off us and learn how to fend for themselves.
I'm surprised McDonald's didn't sue the city. Probably would have been a political nightmare. But it would have been fun since McDonald's probably has more money than the city of Vancouver they could have just sued them into Oblivion. That would have been fun to watch
I think I feel sympathy for the barge simply because it was named the Friendship 500... like aw this poor little barge is just wandering around looking for a friend! Then I remember it's a boat built by McDonald's lmao
Really excellent work putting your videos together. I like the history perspective of your videos. Not just videoing an abandoned building. Thank you for doing this.
Love the Abandoned series! Of all the episodes I've seen so far, this one strikes me as the most sad. It is a shame that the McBarge was denied its forty-year lease. It seems like the McBarge acted in good faith but the city simply didn't hold up its end of the bargain, which is too bad. McBarge looks like it was a fun place.
Lol. McDonalds is everything but a company that creates local jobs. It's all prefab and deliver with minimum local work force. I'd rather see a couple small privately owned kiosks with food than a McDonald's.
No. Expo forgot to tell McDonalds they had to take the fucking thing away when they were finished with it. Jimmy Pattison, not the city. I may be making this up.
Watching these videos makes we want to be a time traveler. I wish I could go back and see these places in their heyday. I'd also want to be there on the last day that Rolling Acres was open. It would be so cool to see it so eerily quiet.
On the news today, in an interesting twist of events, Boaty and Bargy became best friends. After long, tough environment research voyages, Boaty docks next door to Bargy for quality food before embarking back to sea.
@Hgyvtfygyhuh Ygihvutctvnininnin In BC where Vancouver is in they crowdsourced the name for a research vessel and the community chose Boaty McBoatface ;)
This made me go watch the movie, "The Founders". The movie about the origins of McDonald's starring Michael Keaton.. I highly recommend the film. It's an easy 8 on a 10 scale.
I went on so many field trips and visits to the STL McDonalds riverboat growing up - seeing the shoutout made my heart full. I have so many memories there!!
I'm probably the only person who still likes Blade Trinity. It's worth watching, I think. If only to see Ryan Reynolds kicking ass before he became Green Lantern or Deadpool. (He gets some great one line zingers, too.) And watching Jessica Biel get to kick ass too makes it worth watching at least once. What happens to that Pomeranian is still just wrong, though, and that's all I'm gonna say about that. I think Blade Trinity is mostly a guilty pleasure, but I suspect I'm the only person who will admit watching it...and more than once. I hope the McBarge gets renovated but I suspect it may ultimately cost more than it's worth to totally rehab it and make it seaworthy or at least not list to starboard as it seems to be doing right now. Navy ships usually have about a 30 year life expectancy before they're sold for scrap or sunk to make new ocean reefs somewhere. My first ship The USS DEYO DD989 was used as target practice and sunk. Not once but twice. My second ship, USS AYLWIN FF1081 was sold to Taiwan I believe then turned into razor blades. I would not be surprised if it was determined that sinking the barge would be the ultimate best final resting place for it. Or...if it's as water tight as claimed, maybe turn it into an underwater restaurant. Yeah. That's the ticket. Then it'll be an underwater eyesore... Those have always done amazingly well...haven't they...? Or...maybe not so much. 😕
Growing up in St. Louis, I can still remember eating at the McDonald's riverboat. The city is actively trying to "revitalize" the riverfront, but virtually all of the former boats docked in front of the arch are all but gone.
Abandoned boats always intrigue and sadden me. I lived on a boat for many years in the California Delta. There were several abandoned boats in the area as well as many that had sunk years earlier. I watched one of them go down as the owner and his son argued about whose fault it was. If they would have tried to save it early on they could have, but by the time they started trying it was too late. In the past it had been a beautiful wood boat, a 44' Cruiser built in the 1940s . But the owner had neglected it badly until it just wasn't water tight anymore.
What they should have did, was disassemble it and rebuild it on land and fill out the inside with memorabilia of when it was a barge, the world fair, the making of the ship, the concept designs. It would have functioned all the way until now as just a unique McD's location with some cool history to see.
Reinis - you feel fine now but anyone who eats beef regularly without very hard daily exercise is going to accumulate a layer of fat in their veins with each meal. Eventually you have a heart attack or need a very expensive bypass surgery in middle age. This does not apply if McDs customers are smart about what menu choices they make, the fish sandwich is sustainably caught and reasonably healthy, it needs a whole grain bun to be truly healthy. Arbys offers a whole grain bun on request on any sandwich so is much better for us than McDs if you are smart enough to understand the health disaster of white bread culture..

McBarge is right up there with Boaty McBoatface in terms of naming.
Foogy Chagoo BOATY!

Greenpeace purchased the barge and renamed it the McVegan. It's now housing endangered species moored somewhere off the coast of Molokai. They stole the idea from some dude named Noah.

Hi, I’ll have a Quarter Pounder and a medium Coke. Would you like a life jacket with that?
Idk why I read it as “Hi, I’m a Quarter Pounder.”
Thanks for the story. I ate there once with my dad at Expo 86.
Rachel Anne you watch the video or nah?
Did you really come to a video that explains everything your asking and then ask those exact questions in the comments without watching it?
I remember eating there when I was a child. I have a picture somewhere of my dad, sister and I in front of what is now the Vancouver Science Center. I took a picture with my wife and family in the same spot last year. That McDonald's was so unique. I was four years old when expo 86 was happening
Me too! I was 9, and I remember sitting there with my dad too. Wow. Sad to see it's had a rough time since, I really do hope Meekin is able to bring his ideas to fruition and she's put in use once again. I'm glad I got to be part of history.
I ate there also. Expo 86 blew my mind as a child.
I guess this is memory lane
"Maybe it'll be a ball pit."

Oh yeah.... that ball pit..... yikes

I ate at McBarge during Expo 86! I remember it well.
Did it have booth seating?
@Bill Williams you both have the same last name lol
With the amount of money McDonalds make they couldn't just restore it and take it to different ports as sort of floating publicity ?
the city refused it.
You really think McD's needs to pay for publicity ? They sell franchises 1st and hamburgers 2nd. A franchisee could buy it, pointless for the parent co.
Why couldn't they have parked it at an oil rig or an island where it could get customers?
Again, you seem to miss the fact it requires confirmation from the city/state/government
@@Maples01 Yikes... You seem to miss the fact that in Canada they are divided into provinces and territories not states. Now you learned something today.
I’ve never felt so bad for a boat or “barge” before 😔
I agree‼️ So much potential wasted, shame on those who signed a 40 year lease and then didn’t honor it!!
That kid at the end knows what's good.
Shadynine7222 Dashcon 2020 hosted at mcbarge?
Shadynine7222 I huge floating ball pit... Not a bad idea
That poor kid. Not realizing the tetanus he'd jump into 😢.
“Built to last 90 years and has several watertight compartments.” We all know how that worked out with the Titanic.
Chief Dude 11 Yeah but the Titanic hit an Ice McBurger.
I don’t think anyone at WSL thought she would last 90 years. Olympic lasted about 30, which’s is pretty good for ocean liners
It lasted longer than Titanic, though. 😬🧐
the water tight compartments that the titanic was supposed to be built with were actually never fully sealed, they were just walls that opened up on top to the next compartments.
if the walls actually went all the way up to the ceiling like they were supposed to the titanic actually wouldnt have sank.
You can destroy anything.
Found my zombie apocalypse survival fort
You'd be raided everyday
every second i look at it im looking at how it could be structured to grow plants amd farm oxygen, fruits and vegtables, because that would be a great little thing to have in a cove, an area where you;
-dont get any plant growth
-you can wear snorkel gear or make a oxygen pressurizer
/use scuba equipment
- keep vining plants
- weild ladders to the outside so that every inch of it could be used
-plant sea vegtables
- keep fish docile and raise them
- enjoy the great fishing spot
I would canoe zombies out to it and watch them eat your brains out of jellousey
Yeah you'll get away from the zombies sure, but then theres deadly Molds, rodents, bee/wasp hives here and there. and its probably slowly sinking on top of that. yeah i'd take my chances on land or just go steal a better boat. that thing should just be disposed of in an environmentally friendly way of course. god only knows wtf that things made out of. its 75% asbestos most likely.
*throws rock through window*
Verse 1)
Out in Maple Ridge, where the Fraser flows,
There's a tale of mystery that nobody knows.
A floating dream from '86, left to fade away,
But we set out on a quest, to find the ghost of yesterday.
(Chorus)
We're on the hunt for the McBarge, through the misty morning light,
In the heart of the wilderness, we'll find it by tonight.
A relic of the Expo, left to drift and roam,
We're gonna bring it back, make that legend our own.
(Verse 2)
Through the cedar forests, and along the winding trails,
With stories of the past, riding every gale.
We hear the whispers calling, from the river's edge,
Guided by the echoes, of the dreams they pledged.
(Chorus)
We're on the hunt for the McBarge, through the misty morning light,
In the heart of the wilderness, we'll find it by tonight.
A relic of the Expo, left to drift and roam,
We're gonna bring it back, make that legend our own.
(Bridge)
Rusty chains and memories, beneath the moonlit sky,
We're driven by a promise, we can't let it lie.
In the stillness of the water, we see a shadow there,
The McBarge waits in silence, like a ghost in the air.
(Chorus)
We're on the hunt for the McBarge, through the misty morning light,
In the heart of the wilderness, we'll find it by tonight.
A relic of the Expo, left to drift and roam,
We're gonna bring it back, make that legend our own.
(Outro)
So here's to all the seekers, and the dreams left behind,
In the waters of the Fraser, our destiny we'll find.
The McBarge is our symbol, of hope that never fades,
In the heart of Maple Ridge, where legends are made.
My mom used to work in the McBarge during expo 86

I bet you would love swimming around in a sea of balls huh😁
As a kid I used to love ball pits, as an adult I'm entirely grossed out by them!

In my fictional world, this restaurant never gets abandoned and still operates
I live in St Louis Missouri and remember the riverboat McDonald's well. It was docked on the riverfront by the St Louis Arch. Basically every school who did a field trip downtown went to it.
Lester Scrugs That's why I clicked I thought it was the one that used to sit on the riverfront too
Absolutely love your videos, the amount of work you're putting into it is really palpable. And you're not just going through a list of what's happened to the buildings, for example, the details of the decorations, the style of the interiors ... Excellent job sir !
Thank you!
@@vinceroscoe4906 jesus fuck why is the america hate circlejerk so prevalent
I'm surprised McDonald's didn't sue the city. Probably would have been a political nightmare. But it would have been fun since McDonald's probably has more money than the city of Vancouver they could have just sued them into Oblivion. That would have been fun to watch
@@vinceroscoe4906 McDonalds isn't an american business, it's just a business. They're global, like many mega corporations.
I think I feel sympathy for the barge simply because it was named the Friendship 500... like aw this poor little barge is just wandering around looking for a friend! Then I remember it's a boat built by McDonald's lmao
did it have a "boat thru"?? haha
why would it have a boat thru ?
+Hamza Bajwa because mcdonalds have 'drive-thru's. it was a joke.
Yea..you still drive boats. It's not called a car thru, and yes I'm very popular at parties.
***** but hey, I get the joke, I'm just busting balls M8...I guess at the same time you sail boats too so...
bruuuuh it's just a joke. it wouldn't work at all if they said ' did it have a drive thru' lol
An Abandoned video that has a bit of a hopeful ending, which technically isn't an abandoned video, but it's still cool to see.
I just discovered your channel and I'm glad I have! There is so much quality content here, amazing
+Spi Rale thanks!
Dude, the idea of eating Mc Donalds on the water like that sounds awesome, wish I could have done it.

I love it when these videos come out. So heartwarming.

Denzel Monfort We'll just have to wait and see how this story ends.
lol ferreals tho.
My grandpa was involved preparing expo 86, Very amazing how big that was at the time.

Darren Mark Bradley the power might still work

You should check out "The Proper People" channel.
I’d turn it into a McPirate ship.🏴☠️
Epic.
Sell it to Somalia
If we stick to the theme of the Vancouver area, there's an old BC Ferry docked in Mission, BC that's abandoned and I think it'd make a good episode
Used to ride that ferry all the time, I was sad when it shut down.
Aww I was feeling bad for McBarge :/ I felt like she was built for something more! Best of the luck to mcbarge
So city council keeps preventing business owners from investing in the local economy and creating jobs?
I may be making this up.
ml pop MN
This would've never happened if the council allowed them to open the barge. I really don't see why they denied that request.
Watching these videos makes we want to be a time traveler. I wish I could go back and see these places in their heyday. I'd also want to be there on the last day that Rolling Acres was open. It would be so cool to see it so eerily quiet.
RUclips recommends me this video religiously on a 3 month basis.
It should be renamed to Bargy McBargeface
Hgyvtfygyhuh Ygihvutctvnininnin That was unnecessary...
Lol 😂
On the news today, in an interesting twist of events, Boaty and Bargy became best friends. After long, tough environment research voyages, Boaty docks next door to Bargy for quality food before embarking back to sea.
@Hgyvtfygyhuh Ygihvutctvnininnin In BC where Vancouver is in they crowdsourced the name for a research vessel and the community chose Boaty McBoatface ;)
You'd think a wealthy, Chinese businessman would buy it. They bought most everything else in the province.
Thats why its called Hongcouver.
@@es1263 LMAO
@Bill Williams Sweatbarge.
This made me go watch the movie, "The Founders". The movie about the origins of McDonald's starring Michael Keaton.. I highly recommend the film. It's an easy 8 on a 10 scale.
Would you say that you were ¨ Lovin it ¨?
I was so anxious waiting for the clip/photo of it sunken
It's gonna be a underwater museum in Vancouver ; )
REALLY?
lightning Bolt's Channel woosh.
@Thatfathipo except it is MoRoN

Ok boomer
If i had 600k sittin around, id turn it into a personal yacht-house
You’d still keep the McDonalds McFeel right?
Would honestly need more than that.
(He gets some great one line zingers, too.)
And watching Jessica Biel get to kick ass too makes it worth watching at least once.
Agreed lol
Dan homie in high school you was the mic barge lol
Growing up in St. Louis, I can still remember eating at the McDonald's riverboat. The city is actively trying to "revitalize" the riverfront, but virtually all of the former boats docked in front of the arch are all but gone.
Hey I remember it too I’m from the Lou too
That's shameful the city refused them.
Exactly and if it still was a Mcdonalds restraunt, it would've been sorta like a landmark Vancouver is known for.
But the owner had neglected it badly until it just wasn't water tight anymore.
be sure to keep us updated in a year or 2 on this :D good stuff!
Will do. I probably will on Twitter! twitter.com/BrightSunFilms

Hi person
Hhhhjjhhhhhhhhh
Ha. "Loving it"
No pun intended
Astro world is an empty field
Jake, I just binged watch through all 31 videos. Nice job, I loved 'em.
What they should have did, was disassemble it and rebuild it on land and fill out the inside with memorabilia of when it was a barge, the world fair, the making of the ship, the concept designs.
It would have functioned all the way until now as just a unique McD's location with some cool history to see.
Vancover owes McDonalds 39 years and 6 months worth of lease.
McDonalds owes the world 3 billion cardiac bypasses.
People make their own decisions. They're the ones who are accountable for them. Fucking socialists...
Yes, because they force those burgers down your throat. . .
I was eating McDs for a year every day. My health stayed top notch.
I'm 30.
....I also hope it'll become a giant floating ball pit.
So this thing did actually quite well, but seemed city councils did not care for it... Poor barge!
