The SS United States has officially been saved. A few months ago, RXR Realty signed an agreement with the SS United States Conservancy to fully restore the vessel as a hotel and museum. They have already looked over the ships specifications and condition, and at this moment they are currently looking at New York, or other places to dock her. Long live the SSUS! 🇺🇸
A similar thing would most likely have happened already in 2016, if it wasn't for the Crystal Cruise's (failed) plans to make her sail again. SSUSC actually planned to tow her to NY in the spring of 2016, where she was offered a mooring space for free.
Right?! Though I'm sure they would have to get a bunch of stuff fixed and up to par with the U.S. Coast Guard, before even being able to allow people on board the ship!!!
@M Harris Anyone who has taken an art class (and that's basically every American who has gone to public school) has learned about Dali, his work is crazy iconic throughout the entire world
@M Harris I can understand that but it's been 30 years since his death, he's a pretty prolific figure in pop culture nowadays. Schools and curriculums have certainly changed in that time and the majority of students learn about his art since he was a major player in the surrealist movement. Pretty much if you learn about great artists (which most public schools today touch on) Dali is going to be included
Growing up in Philly, I was always in awe of this ship. We always called it the “ghost ship”. While most people in my area knew what ship you would be referring to, little knew what the history of the ship was. Such an amazing piece of history and it breaks my heart to have watched it decay over the years. I wish it would become a museum of sorts so I could step foot on it! Great video!!
I live literally 2 minutes away from this ship, and it has always fascinated me. When I started to have a fascination with ocean liners and other ships, I would research this thing up. I love the ship so much! It’s a shame it’s so rusty though.
@@SymphonyBrahms I am still hoping some rich people would recue this ship and make a hotel, Condos, Casino, etc. of it. The Devine Lorraine Hotel at Broad and Fairmount Ave. in Phila. was in very bad shape but it's been turned into expensive condos I understand.
I was 8 years old when my family and I sailed on this ship in December of 1967. We sailed from New York to Le Havre, France. I still have memorabilia from that crossing. It took 5 days in a rough North Atlantic. I've never barfed so much in my life!
Alright, my turn now. I will restore the ship. Yeah, it's a billionaire project. I'm planning to... Idk... Turn it into an airplane. Seems feasible. But we all know I'm gonna drop the project some months later, right?
FoxTail737 She's being turned into a museum and hotel you can help out with the restoration. 15 Dollars entry per person And thousands entering weekly. Also competition starting between wealthy businessman and others vying for ownership of her And theres a large hotel on her rear side. With 110. Dollars a night pays for much of the costs. With almost full bookings. Has 35 rooms. ACTIVE now. Nightly. And hard to get a reservation. Weekdays are some openings.
Honestly, the best option for the S.S. United States would be to cosmetically restore it and turn it into a museum ship. In this regard I'm sure the people behind the USS Midway Museum would be great resource for learning how to get it done.
I don't know the financials for USS Midway but RMS Queen Mary has been in the red almost since the day she was berthed in Long Beach. Successive operators failed to maintain her and ownership passed to the City of Long Beach. She is in such poor condition that there is actually a possibility of Her sinking in place. The City is not interested in spending the estimated $160M in immediately needed work and neither are the taxpayers. Plans to scrap Her are compounded by the fact that She is not considered seaworthy enough to be towed to the scrappers. At the age of 82 sadly the most likely end will be to tow her out to be sunk as an artificial reef.
I remember going on the SS United States with my father when I was nine or ten years old. We went in a limousine with one of his friends who apparently had some well-positioned authority in its construction. I am now 81 and the only memory I have of the ship is of the hand railings which were still wrapped in protective paper tape. Strange limited memory, because we must have toured the ship. It is sad it was used for only 18 years and then just fell into a state of deterioration and disrepair.
its funny how you remember little details. I restore older cars. When I decided to do the model I grew up in I had a hard time tracking down what option level it was - it has a few different models with very easily distinguishable features, but I wasn't able to remember any of them. Ended up figuring it out because I use to spin an airvent that kept spinning in the wind that was only available one a single type.
I always saw this as a kid when we would go to Ikea, I and always asked my parents when we can go on it. My parents said the same thing every time. “We’ve been wondering the same thing.”
The fascinating allure of the Abandoned series, along with Defunctland and other series like it, is the fact that so many people used to be somewhere and now they just aren’t. Whether that’s a mall, an amusement park ride, a store chain, or in this case a ship, the thing that draws us in is the unique quality that a special place has when it becomes abandoned. It’s a gut-wrenching feeling of nostalgia and sadness that these places can never live up to their former glory, and the feeling is satisfying every time. Any series that can give me that priceless feeling is worth it’s weight in gold. Kudos, Jake. Keep it up!
I sailed on this ship in December, 1955 to England. It was a magnificent experience, it needs to be saved because taxpayers paid for half its expenses and a symbolic example of our history. Please help save this ship. It’s worth saving, would make a great history exhibit.
In the 70s my retired uncle HAND-BUILT a detailed model of S.S. United States which I always admired as a boy; my cousins knew that & just gave it to me 2 months ago! Like its namesake in Philadelphia, it too needs some repairs, but I am SO PROUD to display this 3 foot long beauty on my own mantle!
I am an American Sailor and proud to say it. It hurts to see a grand lady like the S.S. United States in this condition. Man the stories this ship could tell. I would love to stand in her bridge had hold that big, brass steering wheel in my hands. To wear that uniform of a sailor on the S.S. United States would be the second greatest honor I could think of as a sailor after wearing the uniform of the United States Navy. Yes air travel is faster and more popular. But there is something about being on a ship. Being on the ocean that speaks to the human soul in a way that being in a big, metal, tube in the sky does not. Once more Jake, you educate and entertain at the same time, and this time you threw a bit of a knife in the soul of this old sailor. Like you, I pray to see the S.S. United States take her place as America's Flagship once again, I would be the first sailor to apply to work on her. Thank you for this, from all of us that have gladly called the sea our home, our first love, and our mistress.
No Shipwreck, I am not. I am a proud Sailor and if you have EVER served on a ship, which you obviously have not, all ships are referred to with feminine pronouns as is the sea.
"Being on the ocean that speaks to the human soul in a way that being in a big, metal, tube in the sky does not" but to them, you are just a big tube in the ocean. food for thought
That is true, but to feel the sea spray on your face to feel the waves as you are moving through the water, is something you cannot expirience in a pressurized cabin in the sky. To hear dolphins sing and watch them jump it speaks to the soul in a way that being in that pressurized cabin in the sky cannot.
Ain't gonna happen. Those ships lacked the gyro stabilization systems of modern cruise ships, so most of the passenger accommodations were below the main deck, in the hull. Today's cruise passengers prefer the 10 decks above the main deck, for a better view and experience, but the vessels are inherently top heavy.
My family and I sailed on the Big U from Le Havre to New York on our return from France in 1955. My father had been assigned to SHAPE Headquarters outside of Paris and we had just spent three years in France. Our 3 1/2 day voyage is absolutely one of the high points in my life--an experience I will never forget. Never, never never. Thank you so much for the memories!
The SS united States is amazing ship. I really hope it doesn't get scraped because it's such a beautiful ocean liner and its the fastest ship In the world. It always makes me cry to see ships get scraped or abandoned like the SS america. I hope someone buys it and restore's it to turn back into it's formal beauty
As of December 10, 2018, the conservancy announced an agreement with the commercial real estate firm RXR Realty, of New York City, to explore options for restoring and redeveloping the ocean liner.
Does anyone really think that will happen? Put the poor thing out of its misery. If it was an animal, it would have been put down for compassionate reasons. Honestly the same should apply to this poor ship, it sits there in pain and barely alive with no realistic chance of ever sailing again. Do the kind and compassionate thing and scrap it.
@@yoced Oh I agree, it would be nice it were renovated. But many ideas have been floated and failed. So with the ship becoming increasingly derelict, the cost is increasing every year. The sad fact is that if no one has come up with a viable plan in the past when costs were lower, it's almost impossible for any plan to work today. So that's why I said they should put the poor old thing out of it's misery and scrap it.
My Uncle was Chief Engineer on United States in the 60's and I was on Her many times in NYC. As noted in the video She still holds, and probably always will, the Blue Riband for the fastest passenger ship on the Transatlantic run. The only ship on the NY to Southampton run, RMS Queen Mary II, is operated at greatly reduced speed so as to extend the crossing to 7 nights and is considered a Cruise Ship. So sad to see the Greyhound of the Atlantic rotting away. Great video!
solarstan mapping why? Unless air travel stops completely, there won’t be a business model for fast boats. I mean, building a faster boat is possible today, hell, it’s probably not even all that hard - but nobody’s going to do it.
The crossing record no longer has any meaning. In the 40's I guess it was possible to outrun a diesel electric U-boat, but these days, there is no way to outrun a nuclear sub. Besides, if you wanted to ship 10,000 men across the Atlantic in a hurry you could charter a couple 747s for a lot less money. If you conservatively estimate 300 men per flight, you could charter 7 planes to go back and forth and get 10000 men across in 5 days.
As someone who lives just an hour from Philly, I've been super passionate about saving this boat since I was... I don't know, 11 maybe? Every time I have lunch at the IKEA across the street, I make sure to grab a seat that lets me look at the ship. I remember watching a Titanic documentary as a kid, and the last 10 minutes of it was actually about the S.S. United States. It drew comparisons between the two ships but hopefully this ship will be saved, and that's what introduced me to it.
Thank you soo much for making this video!!! My grandfather arrived in America from Germany aboard the S.S. United States on her first voyage. (Maiden voyage is from her home port to another port, first voyage is from her home port to all the other ports she is visiting, and back to her home port.) I really would like to see the S.S. United States be saved. It is a shame that such a glorious ship, a ship that still holds the Blue Riband to this day for the fastest Trans-Atlantic crossing, a ship so fast, she chipped away her paint in her haste to cross the Atlantic,is now rusting away in a port, seemingly forgotten about. She deserves better than to be rusting away in a harbor... She is living history of the success of America after WWII. SHE DESERVES TO BE SAVED!!!
@@xxWikid Nope... it would fit... The RMS Queen Mary is bigger and is a museum. Size has nothing to do with it. The reason why it hasn't been moored and turned into a museum, is because too many people want to see her set sail again, as she is still relatively young. However, I think they should just turn her into a museum as it would save her, and be cheaper.
She is still young enough that people want to see her set sail again. However, due to her condition, I feel that she should just be moored and turned into a museum though.
It may turn into a massive money pit trying to turn it into a museum. Just being docked where it is coasts tens of thousands of dollars every month and repairs would take years. One of its engine rooms are already flooded and the entire interior has been stripped due to asbestos so it's going to take a lot of money to do anything with. This would make for such a nice museum on the Philadelphia waterfront though. Hopefully some investors come through.
Surprisingly, it's in Philadelphia, a city full of museums. If it were to become a museum, it's right at home, especially if it were to be docked at the maritime museum that's literally only a few blocks away lol
Very Interesting Content on this channel. Nice to learn some history about a country I am not from. It's a bit of a change. Thank you for your hard work researching Jake!
The huge problem with restoration attempts was that nearly all of it was with the intent to turn her into a cruise ship. This is a BAD IDEA. She is a ship with the 1950s she won’t last for very long as a cruise ship. She’s aged far too much for her to sail the seas. And there’s not really anything profitable from turning a historic vessel into a cruise ship, ppl who go on a cruise ship don’t have an interest in old, historic ships, they just want to be on a safe cruise and most of them prefer the more up to date ships anyway. And I’m glad these cruise attempts never came to fruition as I don’t like the idea of a ship like that having her design changes to being like those bulky, ugly cruise ships. As far as I’m concerned, they need to fully restore her first and foremost, and then figure out what to do from there. I think the best course of action those is a floating hotel or a floating museum.
Sugarsail1 What does that have to do with anything? How many people do you know who go in Cruise Ships for their historic value? It’s idiotic to try to restore a vessel just to remove historic parts of the ship so you can use it as a cruise ship. Furthermore, just because a ship is restored doesn’t mean it will be in peak condition, especially when it has been out of service for half a century and hasn’t been maintained. And furthermore, I don’t need to have restored a ship to know common sense.
Sugarsail1 andnim sure a cruise line removing signature parts of a historic ship is a good idea for a HISTORIC SHIP. That’s like taking the Queen Mary and removing her three funnels and replacing them with a single funnel. It’s not right.
You do realise that the us navy sails two ships that are older than this ship right? One the Uss constitution is over 220 year old and still sails under her own power form time to time?
Erika Curts Yes, but the Constitution is a rare exception as hardly any ships have that luxury. Also that ship was properly maintained throughout her life, other ships are not. And Britain still has HMS Victory. So it doesn’t matter if a traditional wooden sailing ship is still in use, as those are a rare few.
I hung out & lived in South Philly for about 15 years & I could never get used to how the ship looked like it was crashing into the dock. It’s so eerie & beautiful @ the same time.
I'd love to hear about it. And the boiler company too. Ah well , if I ever become a multi billionaire I may buy it. nope. It won't happen to me but one can dream.
As always another awesome video! Love this series! Did you know that you forgot to mention that the gentleman sitting with Marlon Brando was reknown artist Salvador Dahli!? Fun fact! But you probably knew that.
A few notes to this excellent production: Her engines were as a prototype to the Forrestal Class carriers. They were considered classified technology until 1980. The service speed of the ship was 38.32 knots but her top speed was 44.7 knots - over 50 miles per hour.
My grandmother went on the ship from New York to somewhere in France, she had third class, but was upgraded to 1st class after meeting a few celebrities.
@M Harris lol politicians get away with stuff all the time. Same with celebrities. Look at Hillary, she's gotten away with crimes. Epstein didn't kill himself. He was under suicide watch the entire time, and strangely enough the video footage from his cell that night is missing
Sad ending for a beautiful ship. I had watched a documentary about this a few years back, and an interesting fact about this ship is that she could travel faster in REVERSE than modern cruise ships move forward.
I live in the suburbs of Philadelphia and have traveled Interstate 95 often. I always wondered what was the story behind the S.S. United States. She is a sleek beautifully designed ship. When I first saw the ship; I was in awe of this beautiful ocean going vessel. I've always feared that she would eventually be gutted and scraped. It is such a shame that this beautiful vessel is the victim of economics. Once she is gone - she is lost forever. Sometimes, one needs to take the initiative to save a masterpiece of technology regardless of the profitability. She could be such an asset to the City of Philadelphia! Independence Hall in Philadelphia was once threatened with destruction. Fortunately a group of enterprising ladies who valued the building because of its historic significance saved the building from the wrecking ball.
Thanks Jake for your very intuitive content. Have been watching for a few years now and you never disappoint. Your research is fantastic. Greetings from England! Regards, Harrison.
original funfair: "You never fail to disappoint".....?? Surely that's NOT what you meant to say. How about: You never fail to succeed? You never fail to please? You never fail to amaze? You never fail to disappoint means you ALWAYS disappoint. A simple "you never disappoint" would probably be best.
LodiTX The fact that Jake himself liked my comment shows he knew exactly what I was trying to say. Grammar isn't my strong point unfortunately, but yes any of those examples could of been used.
@@elllieeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee Yes. Scrapping it would allow for some raw materials to be re-used, whereas sinking it could possibly create an artificial reef and also add a poetic finish to the legacy of the SS United States. However, if we were to make it a habitat for the homeless, I would only allow them to live on the vessel for free if they provided the labor needed for her restoration.
So did the Pacific Princess(Love Boat). That ship changed the world and brought people to the cruising vacations! All these assholes running these big cruise companies(especially Princess Cruises)should have pitched in to save this and the Love Boat. The SS Rotterdam was saved! Which I sailed on in the '80s.Beautiful ship!It was worth saving! Just like the Big U.AND THE PACIFIC PRINCESS!!!
It needs to be A: Modernized and be used as a Cruise Liner (Like the USS Texas) B: Given a proper Military send off and sink her. (After all the US Military did built her.) C: Restored and turned into a museum about her hay day. (The time she sailed across the Atlantic.)
As a official member of the SS united states conservancy she will be saved and returned to her glory. She is a piece of history America should be proud of.
I was on this ship in the 80’s when she was in storage at Newport News. The guy in charge said her 2 biggest problems were asbestos and fuel inefficiency of the engines.
I’ve been requesting for a while now. I’m so excited. It’s an amazing video! I really hope that they can save the ship somehow, hopefully similar to how the Queen Mary was preserved.
I say the United States should be given to the Intrepid Museum in New York City, on Pier 86, her former home pier. The Intrepid should move the submarines and other Navy ships to an adjoining pier to make room.
I find it quite funny that no one seems at all interested at this all AMERICAN flagship of an ocean liner (an American icon and pride of America), yet across the country in Long Beach, the BRITISH Queen Mary is getting pampered with million dollar renovations and makeovers.
Sean Mangubat there are many differences and reasons the Queen Mary is being repaired. 1 it's a much older ship that sailed for decades . 2 it played a significant role in WW2 at great risk of being torpedoed and sunk. 3 it's one of the last liners built in a style that will never be reproduced, ie think Titanic. 4 it retains almost all of its original interiors, art deco styling, gorgeous wood work, and light fixtures, which are beautiful and opulent. It no longer can sail, but otherwise is fully functional. What killed the SS UNITED STATES was the terrible decision to completely GUT THE ENTIRE SHIP to the bare metal It's just a huge hollow shell. Forget how much money needed in exterior rust , metal damage repair. Completely removing all the rust. And all new paint. Then you still have a huge gutted ship. I wish some billionaires would get together and take it on and make it a ship again. How about Facebook billionaire Jeff Zuckerberg, no , even people with this kind of money wont throw their money away. Dont forget. The Queen Mary is a functional tourist attraction and FUNCTIONAL HOTEL. It does make money for Long Beach. I live about 70 miles from it and enjoy spending the day on her several times a year. Bottom line. Queen Mary is a ship with historical significance, and architectural design, and vintage style that must be preserved us and future generations to see and enjoy.
look at her, the united states. she looks tired, worn out. she's had her spotlight, albeit short (way too short), and im sure the ship appreciated the enthusiasm to restore her. the ss united states is my favorite ship of all time, and i would hate to see her go, but restoration is beginning to fade out of the question. i say we let the speed queen rest peacefully in the sea, returning to the sea what she took from it. she would make a gorgeous reef, and i definitely think if it this were to happen, vital parts of the ship should be taken and put into a museum (say, a funnel, propeller, cabin recreation, deck flooring, etc.) and let her be remembered in a museum. maybe she can even be turned into a reef right next to the museum, kind of like the uss arizona memorial.
“The overall cost to complete what he wanted was over $200 million dollars.. there just wasnt the proper funding to do so” Sounds like all of my big plans and projects.

Honestly, the best option for the S.S. United States would be to cosmetically restore it and turn it into a museum ship. In this regard I'm sure the people behind the USS Midway Museum would be great resource for learning how to get it done.
There are some plans to do that and have it also be a floating shopping mall simultanously.
Also the Fram in norway.
Ship museums are super interesting imo

@@itsjohndell The city of Long Beach has always owned the ship.
Keep it up!

That is true, but to feel the sea spray on your face to feel the waves as you are moving through the water, is something you cannot expirience in a pressurized cabin in the sky. Ain't gonna happen. Those ships lacked the gyro stabilization systems of modern cruise ships, so most of the passenger accommodations were below the main deck, in the hull. The only ship on the NY to Southampton run, RMS Queen Mary II, is operated at greatly reduced speed so as to extend the crossing to 7 nights and is considered a Cruise Ship. So sad to see the Greyhound of the Atlantic rotting away. Great video!

@@JasperJanssen I would of given the funding I think it would really take off but no one wants to try becouse it's a high risk buissness model

My dad, during the early 60s, made a model of this ship.
How many cruise lines have you managed and boats have you restored?

B: Given a proper Military send off and sink her. (After all the US Military did built her.)
C: Restored and turned into a museum about her hay day.
Thank you so much! It’s a great suggestion :)
I say the United States should be given to the Intrepid Museum in New York City, on Pier 86, her former home pier. The Intrepid should move the submarines and other Navy ships to an adjoining pier to make room.
That's a good idea. Or Pier 84, which is right next to the Intrepid and it's currently used as a public park.
I find it quite funny that no one seems at all interested at this all AMERICAN flagship of an ocean liner (an American icon and pride of America), yet across the country in Long Beach, the BRITISH Queen Mary is getting pampered with million dollar renovations and makeovers.
you are right it is CRYING shame that american people don't seem to care.
Sean Mangubat so?
Sean Mangubat there are many differences and reasons the Queen Mary is being repaired. 1 it's a much older ship that sailed for decades . 2 it played a significant role in WW2 at great risk of being torpedoed and sunk. 3 it's one of the last liners built in a style that will never be reproduced, ie think Titanic. 4 it retains almost all of its original interiors, art deco styling, gorgeous wood work, and light fixtures, which are beautiful and opulent. It no longer can sail, but otherwise is fully functional. What killed the SS UNITED STATES was the terrible decision to completely GUT THE ENTIRE SHIP to the bare metal
It's just a huge hollow shell.
Ironic right ...? Shame on the multibillioners that can help here without even sweet.
Total makeover of this ship would cost billion of dollar.
look at her, the united states. she looks tired, worn out. she's had her spotlight, albeit short (way too short), and im sure the ship appreciated the enthusiasm to restore her. the ss united states is my favorite ship of all time, and i would hate to see her go, but restoration is beginning to fade out of the question. i say we let the speed queen rest peacefully in the sea, returning to the sea what she took from it. she would make a gorgeous reef, and i definitely think if it this were to happen, vital parts of the ship should be taken and put into a museum (say, a funnel, propeller, cabin recreation, deck flooring, etc.) and let her be remembered in a museum. maybe she can even be turned into a reef right next to the museum, kind of like the uss arizona memorial.
So sad.. You know it comes down to dollars and cents, and cruising is a business, but man how badly I wish this ship could be restored.
That's a nice ship. It would be fun to fix it up and take it out on the weekends.
Jake, your videos are very informative, entertaining, and very well done.
Thank you!
“The overall cost to complete what he wanted was over $200 million dollars.. there just wasnt the proper funding to do so”
Sounds like all of my big plans and projects.
Yep, same
At least she didn't meet the grim fate of her sister, the SS America... which is now no longer even visible
I actually work right next to the S.S United States and it’s an amazing ship to see every week
thank you for the informed presentation and lack of horrible music!
I just watched your new video on the queen Mary in Long Beach, brought me over to this video, this is sad morning realizing to such important ships with the rust away
We all have to save history from being forgotten like we should remember our ancestors
