Welcome to Old Vs Young Reactions This is a music reaction channel. My dad and I love music and talking about it. But sometimes we don't agree and that's where the fun comes in. The one thing we always agree on is “music is love”. The power music has is the ability to shape and change emotions and that is a gift from God. There is a reason that couples have their song. And nothing brings back your glory days like that special tune.

He was huge before Purple Rain, he had four gold and three multi platinum albums before Purple Rain. Those earlier albums were huge because Prince had huge R&B audience and R&B radio played him in heavy rotation. Purple Rain crossed over to pop stations and MTV people thinking that was his only big album? He was banging out great music since 1978.
@MarvinGray-f8p Prince was known before Purple Rain, but Purple Rain is when Prince exploded. Before that he had moderate success, although it was better than his Top 40, on the R & B charts. The 1999 album was his first real crossover to mainstream. After Purple Rain everyone knew who he was even if they didn’t like him.

The movie, soundtrack and one of its singles were number 1 at the box office and Billboard Hot 100 for several weeks at the same time. No singular artist has ever done this.
Although dated and led by a cast of non actors, the Purple Rain movie is the Citizen Kane of music star vehicles.
Much more sophisticated than the goofy movies with Elvis and The Beatles.
Prince also was wildly popular and critically acclaimed before Purple Rain and was already a crossover star with the 1999 album and videos on MTV.
MJ and Prince were the only regularly played Black artists on MTV for years.
Prince may not have been THEE greatest at anything, but he may be the only singular artist from the entire rock and roll era to be ONE OF THE GREATEST AT NEARLY EVERYTHING.
He also solely produced all his albums. For others as well.
In the 80s alone he released 9 studio albums for himself and 13 for protégés and side projects.
All of his albums at least certified Multi Platinum, Platinum or Gold. With Purple Rain Soundtrack going Diamond.
6 of the 13 side albums certified at least Gold with a few for The Time and Sheila E going Platinum worldwide.
Plus Chaka Khan won a Grammy for her cover of his song, I Feel For You from his second album in 1979.
And The Bangles had a number 1 with Manic Monday, which he gifted them.
Funny enough his hit Kiss actually displaced Manic Monday from the top spot.
Then Sinead O’Conner scored a number 1 covering Nothing Compares 2 U, one of the songs he gave a side project he created back in 85.
His Super Bowl 41 halftime performance is widely considered the greatest in history.
And his guitar performances at his Hall of Fame induction year and his performance headlining Coachella 2008 are legendary.
He never quit being a top tier once in a trillion lifetimes performer and artist.
Dude was a true one off.
