Dystonia is awful! Its caused from phenergan, thorazine, Compazine ( reglan) and haldol. I have had it from both nausea meds and its terrible, the ONLY thing that works is IV benadryl, not oral but IV.
It makes You feel as if your tongue is swelling up ( though its really not) you can lose control of your bladder, spasms similar to Parkinson's disease and it can be quite painful, possibly permanent if it continues without getting treatment. Also, it can make it so you can't talk so I had to write down what the EMS workers should do because medic one had never seen it before and almost gave me epinephrine! Also, un controlled lip-smacking or lip puckering. These have all been my reactions over the 36 years of having it when I wasn't told by the nurse what I was given and it turned out to be one of those meds.

Thank you so much for your comment! It gives people a better idea of what dystonic reaction is. I have had a pregnant patient that had one from taking an antiemetic she was prescribed for hyperemesis. She was unable to speak as her mandible was deviated. Benadryl worked in less than a minute, but it was one of the weirdest reactions I have ever seen.

Benadryl is my friend as I use it when I take my pain meds and they make me itch which I’m not sure why they cause me to itch some days and other days they don’t lol

I overdosed on benadryl in November of 2022. Can you tell when what they give you for that? The paramedic gave me a couple shots of something before i passed out. Is it like narcan?

Is it normal to continue experiencing arm pain (and a bump) at the injection site two months after a deep IM 50mg?

I would recommend getting it checked out by a doctor.

Impending doom is not always/ totally accurate for this med. To say when you IV push it they might get a cough and feel odd- sure... The fast IV push is not necessarily bad for everyone- but something to consider. There isn't really a reason to push the full bolus fast. And IM is generally painful.

Hey there! I have read both of your comments that you posted (I can only see one at this time). I really appreciate you taking the time to comment. Every person is different, therefore reactions to medications can vary. Impending doom can absolutely be felt by patients along with cough you mentioned. There really is no need to administer Benadryl or any medication (with a few exceptions) rapidly through an IV line and for the reasons mentioned, it should be avoided. Yes, IM Benadryl can be very painful. Thanks again for the comments!

@@LightsSirensAction Also, the IV push can hurt a ton too!! I'm not sure of many EMS protocols that allow for lidocaine to augment a IM or IV push... But in the hospital it is often done!
