I tried it 8ish years ago when I was still in active addiction (mostly heroin but other drugs as well) and it was absolutely the worst experience. I didn't take nearly as much as the girl from this case, but still enough to have some pretty terrifying effects. Hearing voices, seeing shadows moving and forming into objects. The worst part was that shadows would start to morph together into giant (dog-sized) 3D spiders and crawl around. I'm a person that's deathly afraid of spiders, so this was not a good time. I never tried it again after that, but I still feel like my mind is somewhat cloudy ever since then, and again, it's been years. Thankfully I've been able to remain clean from everything for over 6 years now, and my body has been able to recover a lot from my use. But a few experiences have still left deep scars in me and just that one Benadryl use is one of them.

*[TW for arachophobes: spider trip story!* Just skip this paragraph if you're very bothered by lots of (imagined) spiders. Or long, rambling trip stories.] Once at the hospital I was put on a medication that caused some wild hallucinations. I remember the TV screen was the only normal thing. Everything else was just mad! I looked to the window, closed & covered for the nighttime, and a million shiny beetles poured out from the blinds (like someone dumped a couple buckets of beetles through for giggles?). I glanced away and back a couple times, and each time a bunch of them came out to skitter about on the blinds, then fall & disappear. I was trying to eat some noodles, but as I tried to focus my eyes on them to get a forkful, I think my vision blurred a bit, which my brain turned to mold [a major phobia]. It was an odd orange mold that covered the food in seconds, then it began to shimmer and grew taller in a spiky form, and as it did it transformed into clusters of iridescent, sparkling, glass-clear crystals... Fear of the disgusting mold became fascination with the beauty of the crystals as I leaned in close to peer at them, but then they grew yet taller (~3cm?). Suddenly, at once they all moved oddly, sort of jittered, and all together unfolded themselves and spread their legs, each "needle" a spider's leg... Hundreds of weird little glass spiders took form and then ran all over my food, up my fork, and onto my hand. I knew they weren't real, but I swore I could feel them, their delicate little crystalline legs... I dropped the fork and pushed the food away. There was no way I could eat that! Even though when I checked my hand and the food, there was no trace of the spiders, the crystals, or the "mold", I kinda lost any appetite that may have been there. Pretty normal reaction, I think, lol.
      *SPIDER STUFF OVER*
[I had a friend who was severely arachnophobic, so I get ya if you're also.]
But I don't feel like it was actually frightening nor "gross". More... interesting? Still, I don't [and can't in good conscience] recommend seeking out this kind of thing intentionally. It was a side effect of a med given for discomfort, not for fun. (They've got some wacky meds there for the wacky ways our bodies can fail us.) Frankly, I'd prefer not to have to do it again; hospital stays are not "fun". That was just a "goofy side effects" experience as part of a larger, much less "goofy" experience. But I figured the story might be of some interest. Or it's like when your friend tells you they "had the wildest dream!" and it's just a weird mess of nonsense. Hopefully the former? Heh.
      *And OP...*
I'm glad you got away from that stuff. It's not easy [understatement of the century], and takes real courage and pain to overcome [more understatements ig, sorry]. I hope you're continuing to do well overall. Even if you've slipped up [no judgement; noting only just in case cos I don't know you], you know that's not failure, and it doesn't put you back at square one; it just means you've hit a bump in the road and you've got to get back up and keep moving forward. GL & cheers. ❤︎

I intentionally OD’ed on a drug in the same class as Benadryl. Y’all, don’t do it. I couldn’t walk. I didn’t get rushed because the EMT was more curious about asking me why I tried to commit die than actually getting me treatment. I took like 200 pills. I reported the amount in grams and she didn’t get that it was a HUGE amount.
Thankfully thankfully thankfully I threw up early on, but some of it still got to me. The taste of the concentrated pills coming up after several cycles of vomiting with barely any stomach acid left was disgusting. I threw up so long I aspirated on my vomit. I was so exhausted I threw up all over myself. I’m pretty sure I had an absence seizure. It was like this ball of lightning was approaching my ear and I could feel all the energy on that side and suddenly when it hit me, BAM! It felt like an explosion in my head. Again and again and again. My brain felt like it existed on a different plane of reality. I can’t explain it.
My mouth was so dry. I can’t describe it. It was beyond uncomfortable. Imagine your mouth without a single drop of saliva. You can try to smack it but nothing will come. The inside of your mouth is like your outside skin.
I had a fever because I wasn’t sweating and I was wearing winter clothes. So basically, within an hour I was shivering uncontrollably, throwing up all over myself while not being able to disperse the horrible pill taste because I had no saliva, and throwing up so hard I breathed in my vomit, all while experiencing these weird head explosions.
After that I was basically asleep for two days, and when I was awake I threw up. If they moved my bed even slightly I threw up. I was so out of it they couldn’t even do a psych eval before admitting me to the ward. The shift of 4 psychiatrists passed before they decided they were just going to admit me.
I didn’t go to the bathroom because I couldn’t move so eventually when the effect of the pills started wearing off I shit myself.
It’s embarrassing but also you need to understand what happens when you OD on this stuff. never again. If you want to commit aliven’t please please go straight to the hospital without trying something first.

I aspirated too during my first benadryl trip. I was in class, and started getting sick, so I got up and forgot to ask. So I stopped haf way and asked and she let me go. The moment I got out the door I threw up, but because I hadn't eaten much, I only wretched up a bit of matter and it was very painful. I then made it to the bathroom, where I threw up and aspirated, and in a desperate attempt to breath, I moaned very loundly before collapsing and vomiting more. After I stopped vomiting, I looked up and saw a guy standing in the doorway staring at me. He took me to the nurse and I got to lay down. Want to know the best part? I never even got to go home!

Now 7 or 8 years later, the brain fog is better, not much due to other health issues, but my short term memory slowly recovered to a point I wasn't scared every day I'd forget something. After 30 minutes I started feeling really heavy, having slight audio hallucinations and nothing felt real. I remember asking my ex over and over “is this real?? Are we really on a call right now?? Are we really talking???” And I couldn’t sleep. My legs would cramp and feel restless, and my heart rate was up. It was fucked, my guy. yrs ago i took benedryl as a sleep aid. i started w the recommended dosage of 2. over the course of that first year i gradually increased the dosage until i was at a total of 20 or more per night, not all at once. i upped the dosage to 3 pills every 2 hours until i could no longer stay awake at which point i would have taken a lil over 20 pills. i got so good at fighting off the drowsiness. there was a pleasurable rush that happened at about an hour after each dose. it was like clockwork; i could time the dose on the hour and expect the rush to happen in an hour. the rush lasted only a few short mins. my heart would race and i felt good and sexually aroused. im not sure if thats why i kept doing it as i was always in such a daze. when i tried to quit cold turkey i made it about 26 hours before i caved due to withdrawals which were severe. extreme nausea, clammy, massive headache. i weaned myself off it over a few mos span. the label said "non habit forming".

After a while the dug made me more awake more alert, like a U shaped interaction the opposite of what I was going for. At one point, I started hallucinating. It was the opposite of fun hallucination. More akin to a type of dementia.

when I took just 18 pills (450mg) of DPH/benadryl, wasn't because of the tiktok challenge, but i had to go to the ER. My heartrate was at 130. I had to drink 2 bottles (about 4-6 cups) of charcoal. I was close to an overdose, just by taking 450mg.
The hallucinations I got were crazy. I hallucinated people, my cat, voices, etc.. I felt extremely heavy, nauseous, and I was extremely confused. I couldn't even get undressed without help.
Don't do what I did. Not worth it at all.

I have taken up to 300mg and it was...uncomfortable. It’s a deliriant not a hallucinogen, so you experience things that aren’t actually there instead of enhancing the things that are. You hear shit, have full conversations with people who aren’t there, and your eyes get so dry you are constantly rubbing them and can’t see anything, you feel like you have to pee but can’t; in general it’s just not much fun.

Thank you so much for this video, this explain so much more than any of the doctors would tell me, they wouldn't really tell me anything at all
Tw: benadryl near death experience || i overdosed on benadryl (suicide attempt) and i have nightmares of how it started to affect me, it made me swollen and shaky, it made me super thirsty, horribly nauseous but also could not throw up, my heart rate increased and increased, and when it really started to take affect they had to revive me in the ambulance and i remember floating outside my body watching them do that, and then everything was black for a while and then i heard panic, my blood sugar dropped below 40, little alarms were going off, and i was starting to seize, then emptiness again, and then i woke up a few days later in the icu, the walls were moving and purple (in reality they were beige and red i think?), There were these weird giant bubbles everywhere, and the hat man was in the corner, and then I'd just sleep and wake up sleep and wake up until eventually i atleast wasn't hallucinating anymore but was still a bit out of it, just standing up my heart rate would get into the 170s and the doctor would come in and yell at me, and over the course of the next few weeks i could barely get up or do anything because of my heart, eventually i got to the point where i could walk slowly, and over the last year to the point where i can walk decently long but I'll have to take times to slow down a bit from a normal pace to a pretty leisurely pace, i also have a lot of memory problems now so i don't remember a lot of things that have happened and i have a lot of time gaps, i just remember like pictures here and there, benadryl is just not fun, don't do more than the recommended dose.

A few months ago I had a really bad combination skin problem thanks to a new toner I was using. No matter what I tried, the dryness wouldn't go away. I was so desperate to get my normal skin back that I turned to Google for answers (NEVER do that). One artical said to put a moisturizer on your face and than lots of petroleum, so I did just that. A few hours later, my skin was starting to go numb. My mom brought me to the ER since we thought I was having some kind of allergic reaction to the moisturizer. Turns out my face couldn't breathe due to all the petroleum I put over the moisturizer. The doctor
gave me some wipes to clean everything off my face. A few minutes later, my skin went back to being very dry. The doctor noticed this and prescribed me to take 2 Benadryl and 2 Pepcid everyday for about a week. I followed the instructions and my skin started to return back to normal. In about 3 to 4 days, my skin looked and felt completely normal. Long story short, don't abuse a drug that can help you. Always follow label institutions or instructions by doctors on how to take it.

    • @TheQueenOfTrash
      @TheQueenOfTrash 3 года назад

If anybody that's reading this, has a similar condition to mine, and wants to attempt this. Let me clarify some things. First, take the 1 Benadryl and 1 Pepcid in the morning and do the same thing before you go to bed at night. Second, space out the pills by 3 to 5 minutes, I recommend taking the Benadryl first. Third, DON'T PICK AT YOUR SKIN, your skin will start to peel, but only peel it if it comes off as one big flake, if you pick at a spot that isn't ready to come off yet, it will get even more dry and inflamed. Forth and final, when you start this process, stop everything you're used to doing, cleansers, moisturizers, EVERYTHING, for the first few days, wash your face with just water, you can also use water as the moisturizer by grabbing a soaked rag and dabbing it on your face, after the first few days, you can ease back into a moisturizer, and then back to a cleanser.

When I was in college I had severe insomnia, and a lot had to do with adderall, and just having horrible anxiety, dreading to go to school the next day. At one point even GHB wasn't enough to make me knock out some nights. I gradually upped the dose of benadryl to 15, 18, even 21 some nights. Gaining a huge tollerance allowed me to take that many pills, with the effects of only 3 or 4 to the normal person. It can be a useful sleep aid to many people, but being dependant on pills isn't a great way to live. Even today I take Elavil, Guanfacine, Wellbutrin, Zoloft, and just recently added Subutex to the list. Anyways, a warning to anyone who takes Benedryl and is not used to the medicine, do NOT attempt to drive on any dose at all, until you know how it effects you. Even if you feel like you can drive ok on 2 or 3 pills, does not meen you can drive ok on 4. Be careful out there. Sorry for the rant

Unrelated to the challenge, my indirect-experience with Benadryl was a suicide attempt by a friend. I remember disregarding professional help at first because I’ve never heard of somebody overdosing on Benadryl (mind you I was around 15). As I was researching the side effects, I realized how seriously wrong I was and reading lethal symptoms that can lead to seizures and death. It was at that moment that I demanded my friend to seek help immediately. When they successful did, they immediately suffered from a seizure that ended with broken bones. What I can tell you is my friend survived because they sought help and is still living to this day.
I know it’s easy to dismiss a household medicine and minimize the harmful effects, but it’s not something that can be played with. Smoke weed or drink booze like other burnouts if you must. Learn your limits and moderation is key, but Benadryl is a stupid shortcut for a high.

Regarding sleeping pills and "dirty" medication, I've never ever understood why my country and many others have a tendency to prescribe _quetiapine_ and mirtazapine, and even olanzapin as a first line of medications to insomnia.
I mean, they'll knock you out for sure but they do SO much more too.

I take it whenever I have food allergies, saves me from an incessantly itchy tounge/throat/inside of ears. I have never really gotten any lasting side effects. Yeah, it makes me very, very, sleepy, but for me, that usually lasts around 3 hours at the most. I also take one if I have a lot of trouble sleeping, and I'm usually able to wake up at the same time I usually do without any sort of "hangover". I'm pretty wary of using it and i would NEVER take that stuff regularly/every night or recreationally abuse it, but at least for me, it's better than any sort of habit-forming sleep inducer and acts much faster than anything like fexofenadine. I don't take it for regular seasonal allergies (I use phenylephrine and fexofenadine for that, because I usually know ahead of time when I'll have those allergies) because I don't want to be knocked out at 10 AM, but it seems to be working pretty well for me as something to take occasionally when needed, because it works very fast and very well.

Diphenhydramine abuse gave me serious regular panic attacks, even years after quitting. While using, I got very anxious and restless, very itchy, went down deep dark holes in my mind, and heard people and noises that weren’t there and I thought something or someone was coming for me.
It made me think I would forget to breathe and die. I would feel like my soul was being kicked out of my body. I would just become convinced I was going to die any minute, not helped by my insanely fast heartbeat and delirious hallucinations. I couldn’t pee and my mouth was bone dry and drinking was terrifying cause I could feel it go down and nausea would ensue.
The afterglow made me feel so wrong and I feared that my brain would be permanently destroyed and that I’d always be stuck in this drug induced purgatory. Panic attacks would continue for months. The only reason I used was to feel something or feel different and at least the horror I experienced wasn’t the depression I felt. Some experiences were fun or relaxing, but most were HELL.
