I've been abusing cough medicines which contain dextromethorophan for years. I started using it as a substitute for alcohol, my original drug of choice. It was extremely interesting to learn the science behind WHY the dextromethorophan makes one feel good. I am currently sober from alcohol, and using a 12-step program to also kick the cough medicine habit. Thank you, Doctor, for this informative and non-judgmental video.
@@x-j3245 I'd say that's the "addictive" line of reasoning. You'll look for anything that'll alter your perception. And if substance choice 'a' stops working (or has too many negative consequences), you just switch to substance choice 'b', then move on to 'c', and so on down the line. The secret to good recovery is to get your mind to a place where you feel okay WITHOUT needing or wanting to alter your perceptions. 👌
Serotonin Syndrome is horrible. I mixed DXM with 5HTP and had a 3 day stay in ICU. I had a friend call me an Uber to the ER at 3am, and the last thing I remember before blacking out was me banging on the door of the room they put me in shouting I needed help immediately because I was dying. I knew it was serotonin syndrome but for some foolish reason it didn't cross my mind about that risk before I took the pills. I have No memory of anything else other than waking up at some point surrounded by my parents. I left the hospital with a bag of my pants which I had pissed in, and psychomotor retardation for 3 weeks. I couldn't form sentences but I could think them so my speech was so delayed and broken I would get panic attacks because that's a very overwhelming thing. Luckily I've made a "full" recovery from that instance, though I can say I am not the same person mentally anymore. Kids, if you're gonna do drugs, always look up EVERY possible interaction with ANYTHING. But don't do drugs kids they haven't done a thing for me other than make me a shell of my former self.
I almost died from Trader Joe’s 5HTP - thought the caffeine wasn’t enough, so I took the labeled dose. Felt like an engine at redline while sitting and doing nothing. Coke >>> 5HTP…..
I used to do DXM but only the pills with only that in it. I ended up taking the liquid form with alchol once and had a psychotic episode because I had gotten off my Anti-depressant barely 2 weeks before. It was the scariest shit I have ever been through. Decided to quit after that.
i’m here watching this because i overdosed sunday morning, it was an absolutely god awful experience and i thank everything that i walked away with it as only an awful experience and nothing worse. 36 dayquil tabs and my liver is probably destroyed from all the acetaminophen. i only did it because i my cart died (thc pen) and my reliance on that to get me through. the only thing i liked about those cursed pills was the fact that they did infact work like antidepressants once all the crawling to the bathroom with my vision spinning and flashing was finished, only that made the experience worse coming down. after all of that now all the depression was back so that sucked but i’ve made the executive decision to stop abusing substances to mask my feelings and try to get actual help
Forget anti-drug campaigns, hearing this guy explain what you've done to your body in a calm, thorough, yet easily understandable way is low key terrifying.
I experienced serotonin syndrome after a former psychiatrist increased my dose of Wellbutrin. For about three days I had hallucinations, seizures, and eventually lost the ability to walk for a period of time. One of the most terrifying experiences of my life and I thought I was going to die.
@@nothanks8839 yeah I honestly despise House's outrageous cynicism. He jumped the shark from the start with how quippy and sarcastic he is all the goddamn time. It's annoying and takes away from the actual interesting content of the show. To me it's nigh unwatchable.
Used to be a show my family loved watching when I was a kid called Mystery Diagnosis. It was actual patients of rare conditions and diseases being interviewed about their story with re-enactments. The solution was kept a secret until the very end with just the symptoms and subsequent discoveries of medical professionals being given until the last ~10 minutes. It was awesome and I’m glad to see a similar format living on here on RUclips.
I noticed that too, but she regained consciousness and it was mentioned that her care could continue in a healthy manner. Could just be a recent case and the rest of the story is not yet known.
He did say, "lucky for her." I suspect it's recent, but likely won't be a full recovery. Serotonin overdoses have a bad record of causing permanent depression.
I ended up with serotonin syndrome from a single normal dose of this stuff. Thankfully it was mild enough to where I didn’t have any seizures or a fever (just the tachycardia, muscle spasms and minor auditory hallucinations), but apparently my parents never even let me have it for colds when I was young because my whole family has weird reactions to it. Of course another medication I was on at the time significantly lowered the threshold for serotonin syndrome, which has happened to me before, so probably not likely to happen to most people.
@@leroysanchino no this is more likely due to a rare enzyme deficiency that leads to adverse reactions, this is well known in the recreational dxm community

I didn't feel any pain working out or getting physically struck while tripping on DXM. Definitely numbs physical feeling. Your skin feels like literal rubber.
The saddest thing about all of this is that from the very beginning of her symptoms, it was obvious that she never had depression to begin with. She has *bipolar disorder.* The symptoms he described at the beginning were episodes of mania and depression, not major depressive spells. An SSRI won’t properly help bipolar disorder. She needs a mood stabilizer. Based on his description at the beginning, he probably meant to put that she had bipolar disorder and changed treatments at the end but forgot to add it. He was describing textbook bipolar symptoms, so I went ahead and added it here. For those curious why I know, I have Major Depressive Disorder, have family members with bipolar disorder, and have studied human psychiatric conditions at a pre-collegiate and collegiate level, with my original area of study being psychiatric diagnostics.
I can see why she liked it. DXM has a disassociative effect on someone. You feel completely disassociated with your problems and people so you feel more free.

7 years ago I took two bottles of dxm syrup while on an MAOI (and doubling my dose of it for a week) as an "attempt". I figured I'd have a wild night before getting seratonin syndrome and leaving this earth. I took it on friday, and was completely ruined until monday, when I had to drive (awful idea with how messed up I was) to my therapist appointment. I made it without crashing somehow, where she noticed the shape I was in and called an ambulance to get me to the hospital. I'm currently the happiest I've ever been and can't wait to see the future that I almost lost. If you're going through something, I assure you that you do have the strength to get through it. There's a happy life waiting for you if you can keep going. You've fought hard, just fight a bit longer.
I was on an MAOI (Parnate) from August 2023 until I was hospitalized for Serotonin Syndrome on January 21st 2024, where I was sedated for 6 days with propofol and very high doses of Versed, intubated, and kept in critical care for 5 additional days after I was taken off sedation. I was on 50mg of Parnate a day, and I made the mistake of taking serotonergic supplements along with it, the primary one being SAM-E. When I was sleeping, my mother noticed my legs and feet shaking with seizure activity (clonus), so she woke me up, and drove me to the emergency room, where my memory stopped right after being taken back for intake. This is when I had a mental status change, where I became very confused, physically agitated, sweating profusely, and developed a fever, with very high blood pressure and heart rate. So they started to sedate me and run a ton of blood tests. During my time in critical care, after I was taken off sedation, my doctor said my case of SS was the worst case of serotonin syndrome he had ever witnessed. Thankfully he recognized my symptoms as serotonin syndrome right away, and in addition to the sedation, put me on Cyproheptadine, an antihistamine that is antiserotonergic at high doses. I was on the maximum dose of cyproheptadine, 32 mg/day, for about 5 days straight. I think the fact that most sources say that SS should be resolved in 24 to 48 hours is also a testament to how severe my case was. They made it clear that I am very lucky to be alive. And for the first time in many years, I feel truly happy and thankful to be alive. This was not intentional and I was not suicidal at the time, but I was certainly still depressed. Had my mother not been there and taken me to the ER at the exact time that she did, things would have been much worse. I can not imagine going out that way, it's truly one of the most horrific ways to die. I am very happy that you are okay and are doing better as well. Thank you for sharing your story and giving me a chance to share mine. It's only been about two weeks since I was discharged from the hospital, and I am still recovering with brain fog and low energy (I assume mostly from the withdrawal of the abrupt cessation of Parnate). Thankfully there seems to be no permanent damage to my neurology, psyche, or organs. It's an experience I will never forget, and I feel has forever positively changed me. I remember shortly after being taken off sedation and fully realizing what had happened, I burst into tears, profusely thanked the nurse for saving my life, hugged her, and said that I loved her and everyone else who saved my life. Sometimes it takes something as severe as an extremely close brush with death to make you appreciate being alive.
I thought of attempting this way but because I had su1c1dal ideation in the past I couldn't get prescribed SSRI's. I still don't like life and I feel lonely, but I don't really feel like life is pure suffering and I don't feel like actively going o ut and ending myself.
So she really wasn't suffering just from depression, but from bipolar disorder. Inorder for her to feel better she liked to feel slightly manic and all that serotonin helped better than taking her 1 SSRI only no one educated her on serotonin syndrome.
@@psilosighin it always frustrates me to think how do many things feed into depression, which can cause worse symptoms that just feed right back into depression. Positive feedback seems to be a negative thing more often than not.

But DXM is awesome, it's a dissociative in high dosages, as long as you do your research you'll be fine and don't mix it with anything else, unless it's nitrous
So I paused your video to say I've "dosed" ( a term I used while using DXM) probably over a hundred times. From the the years of 2014 to the end of 2019 I would dose out on pure DXM geltabs you can find at the dollar tree. It wasn't everyday use, but I would binge at times. Then just stop. Anyway, the things I had experienced mentally were terrifying. I still dissociate, I get mentally taken away from reality and my memory is absolutely terrible, on top of this DXM started as a "legal psychedelic" for me. And quickly became a way to numb and hide away from the world. I'm almost 3 years clean from it.
I also used it a lot when I was younger though the main reason I stopped was my body was really starting to reject it I would get nauseous just from smelling the gel caps. I was also starting to enjoy the trip far less, the one thing I really miss from it is the afterglow in that state of mind I feel more at peace with life and the world than any other.

I can attest. I've had my experiences with dextromethorphan cough syrup in the past and this only happened that one time when I drank syrup that had guaifenesin in it. I was talking with this very cute girl in my car while drinking the thing but quickly had to excuse myself for a minute because of the nausea that had started creeping up on me. I bolted out of the car to find a place to puke but couldn't even do 15 steps before a jet of hot diarrhea started spraying out of my sphincter only to be strained by my underwear. I then started vomiting this pink foam while my backdoor kept on leaking a little more until I could regain control over it. The best part of the story is that I was then too high to walk at this point, so I had to sit in all my glory and shitted pants for a few hours before I could get to a restroom and clean myself. Much spaghetti was spilled that day even though my friends didn't seem to notice that I effectively shat myself in public. For my defense, that happened 12 years ago at a time when we didn't have Internet at the tip of our fingers at all times. I vaguely knew that you could get high from cough syrup and did it on a whim without proper research and it bit me back.
Holy shit I'm blasting out of both ends! My heart's a seizing! My lung's a weezing! The fucking walls are melting! I can hear satan's voice! He's telling me to... invest in apple... What does that mean? WHY DOES HE WANT ME TO BUY APPLES?!

I think it’s worth contextualizing the DXM not only as a serotonin reuptake inhibitor, but as a dissociative like ketamine, which is a drug that people use recreationally. Ketamine is known as a positive aid for depression, and DXM’s association with Ketamine means that people can associate it with depression treatment as well. The amount GG was taking sounds insane though.
FDA approved a new medication that contains dextromethorphan and bupriorion combined together for the treatment of major depressive. I forget the name of the new medication but psychiatrists are now prescribing it. The bupriorion causes the DXM to metabolize slowly causing the DXM to last alot longer allowing for a long duration of anti depressent effects. Have you heard about this!! Even Psychiatrists are latching on to dissociatives for the treatment of depression.
decided to watch this as I just experienced cough syrup poisoning. it was not on purpose for the record. @@mickeymouse12678 Unless the CVS she went to saw very little traffic and she always saw the same people, it's unlikely they'd even recognize her. Also, something to consider is that it isn't a regular pharmacy employee's place to say when or how often someone may purchase something. Possibly the pharmacist could, but that's usually limited to prescription medication. Regardless, if they did do that, I'm sure she'd just go elsewhere. It's not like it's hard to find a CVS or Walgreens or wherever.
If she was using CVS rewards or the same debit/credit card each time at the same store, they could track the amount of cough syrup she's buying. It's regulated how much you can buy in my state. I bet she was going from store to store to buy it. Also, if there was a 2-week shortage, certainly someone noticed. It's not terribly uncommon for teenagers to abuse the stuff.

I ended up with serotonin syndrome from a single normal dose of this stuff.

And that's on unhealthy coping mechanisms-
So I paused your video to say I've "dosed" ( a term I used while using DXM) probably over a hundred times.

The amount GG was taking sounds insane though.
yes, dxm is a dissociative anesthetic just like ketamine. it’s just not used as one.
i’ve taken over 1500mg of dxm hbr, which is definitely insane and i dissociated into oblivion and was sent into a state of psychosis.
Yeah, and those drug interactions are clearly very relevant too -- I don't think the good doctor pointed them out for no reason.
I've always heard of DXM as "poor man's" Ketamine.
I want to understand what happened inside me when this was going on. long story short I took 8 times the prescribed amount. that is less than half a bottle. I was incapacitated for 9 hours. I couldn't move, kept blacking out, my vision was swimming, I couldn't register objects, like as if I were a dog seeing a computer- knowing its there but not really KNOWING what it is. I still have a headache. I did not go to the hospital as it was not a fatal amount (this is normally characterized by prolonged unconsciousness, blue lips or fingertips, excessive vomiting, so on and so forth.) , I just had to let it pass through my system. Obviously I lived. but I have a feeling that had I taken more, I could have easily died. please treat cough syrup with caution. it may be OTC but it is dangerous. it is not a toy, take it very seriously.

“Hey, GG you here for your cough medicine again? You must REALLY have a bad throat.”
That's what I'm sitting here wondering. Surely **someone** at the store would notice her buying an entire bottle of cough syrup every single day???
You'd think she would have rotated from place to place
@@mickeymouse12678 Unless the CVS she went to saw very little traffic and she always saw the same people, it's unlikely they'd even recognize her. Also, something to consider is that it isn't a regular pharmacy employee's place to say when or how often someone may purchase something. Possibly the pharmacist could, but that's usually limited to prescription medication. Regardless, if they did do that, I'm sure she'd just go elsewhere. It's not like it's hard to find a CVS or Walgreens or wherever.
@@MikeTXBC My dad got banned from buying cough syrup so he just makes my mum or his friends do it
If she was using CVS rewards or the same debit/credit card each time at the same store, they could track the amount of cough syrup she's buying. It's regulated how much you can buy in my state. I bet she was going from store to store to buy it.
Also, if there was a 2-week shortage, certainly someone noticed. It's not terribly uncommon for teenagers to abuse the stuff.
This is sad - self diagnosis is a dangerous thing to play with, and shame is a terrible place to feel trapped in. I didn't realize that norepinephrine was also affected by this.
