This song brings me to tears every time I hear it. I love it , but I can only let myself experience it once in a while. I get too emotional. Truly, this song touches a nerve I never knew I had.
In my mind I dedicated this song to a buddy who took his own life I play this on piano all the time. Just had a gig and decided to play this song a bad idea I brought myself to tears God I'm not the only one it's so deep
Ride the blue wind high and free She'll lead you down through misery Leave you low, come time to go Alone and low as low can be If I had a nickel I'd find a game If I won a dollar I'd make it rain If it rained an ocean I'd drink it dry And lay me down dissatisfied Legs to walk and thoughts to fly Eyes to laugh and lips to cry A restless tongue to classify All born to grow and grown to die So tell my baby I said so long Tell my mother I did no wrong Tell my brother to watch his own And tell my friends to mourn me none I'm chained upon the face of time Feelin' full of foolish rhyme There ain't no dark till something shines I'm bound to leave this dark behind Ride the blue wind high and free She'll lead you down through misery Leave you low, come time to go Alone and low as low can be
Just finished his biography and had to smile seeing this album cover. The picture was picked without his permission. He was really upset upon seeing it because he said his mother wouldn't be happy to see he had no shirt on - she'd think it disrespectful.
I think this is one of the finest folk songs ever written. It should be included it the books of children's songs that the music teachers use in grammar school (elementary school, I guess they call it now). It's a classic.
David Balko , i think Townes van zandt will be recognized as one of the best musicians/writers once our civilization is rediscovered in like 3000 years... lol. Seems fitting of his legacy
Works better as beautiful consolation than a precautionary tale imo. Let them enjoy life for a little bit while they can. Townes will still be here when they need him...
Think of my ex when I hear this. Good times... I loved that woman... been single since I can't even pretend I'm ready it's been almost three years. She came into my life at a time things were dark.. she gave me hope and a reason to keep on
This song reminds me of a relationship I trashed ... For my fuck ups only.. She showed me a movie, Leaves of Grass and it had this song in it .. I'll never forget that day... #DayOneFuckUp...
Got that live clip of him playing this on 'Be here to love me' , wish i was good enough at guitar to see how he played it. Qualitys pretty good too for anyone who wants to learn this
A movie that can be both sad and funny its rare. If you add the way Edward Norton manages to play the two twins apparently so different in character, you have a little masterpiece!! Just a pesornal opinion! :)
Almost positive he uses a quick change capo (the one with the spring steel) and capos all the strings except low E up two half steps to the 2nd fret. That allows the low E when he's playing the D shape (which is E because of the capo) to get that bass, but then allows the G shape with the A tonic (the chord is A, again because of the capo.) Same tuning as Guy Clark's Dublin Blues
@@Akira-jk1lq Yeah, I was kinda being a shit when I made that comment. I do like Iron & Wine. It was kinda dumb for me to even be ranking them against each other. Kinda apples to oranges.

Agree that this is the best version. I can't imagine what that show was like at the Old Quarter that night. He was really on top of his game.
I've given a copy of this album to my sister. I want this song played at my funeral service.

So true! 💯
It might just be the best American song.

So so so beautiful. Like so many of us he never could leave the dark behind. The greatest there ever was.

The poet laureate of Texas
Tell my baby I said "so long"
Tell my mother I did no wrong
Tell my brother to "watch his own"
Tell my friends to mourn me none
It's legs to walk and thoughts to fly,
eyes to laugh and lips to cry,
a restless tongue to classify,
all born to grow and grown to die ....
Well if I had a nickel I'd find a game;
if I won a dollar I'd make it rain;
if it rained an ocean I'd drink it dry
and lay me down dissatisfied ....
I'm chained upon the face of time,
feeling full of foolish rhyme.
There ain't no dark till something shines;
I'm bound to leave the dark behind.
Justin Townes Earle many years later…. “Tell my mama I love her, tell my father I tried, give my money to my baby to spend”.
Love this song. Brings tears to my eyes. Born to grow and grown to die.
This is one of the most beautiful songs l've ever listened to.
The masterpiece of a true genius. And one who's surely
considered an American icon.
There's something so beautiful and healing about this.
Makes my heart weep in contentment . Nobody did it like Townes

I love how emotional he is at the start and he take a a few deep breaths. Spine tingling stuff.
The guitar melody just makes me imagine being in a boat on a lake surrounded by beautiful mountains and nature. So peaceful.
this is amazing song most of Townes songs are. I have been listen to him for years. there is a lot of sad truth with his lyrics

Me, this is a timeless classic.
Brother, I can never leave Townes. Once in a while, I find myself listening to his songs all over again.

@@charleskaucic5047 definitely hard drugs, drinking, depression. So I think no, this wouldn't be a good song for children. But beautiful nonetheless.

Such beautiful guitar behind those timeless lyrics.🙏🎸
One of my favorites in this old world
Love this song! So pure, so beautiful. Makes me want to close my eyes and floor it on the highway
Hope you drive different roads then me !
All of Townes' songs, his whole life, they just break my heart.
I think this is the best version I have heard of this song, as are most of the others from this show-truly Townes at the top of his game.
One of Townes' best. Lyrics are a premonition.
it's just townes magic

Here because of Western As Fuck ❤
Wonder why Rex hated this song?
im coming down on some acid i just got at a lumineers concert, is it just me tripping, or does he not have a shirt on in the album cover?
tell my mother i did no rong tell my brother to watch his own tell my friends to morn me not
I know that feeling. You write enough songs its bound to happen somehow some way eventually. Good song to have similarly written though!
I'm getting Iron & Wine vibes here
No offense, but Townes Van Zandt shits all over Sam Beam. Even from beyond the grave. lol
@@tuanjim799 Sam is a damn fine artist to be honest, his albums are filled with classics. I love Townes but I’d say they’re damn near equals.
