C. 1994. I spent an hour or so alone with him while a friend went to the liquor store for him and us. Mostly for him. Man I wish I had been writing that stuff down because that guy was pulling stories out of the atmosphere. I believed every word. Sweet guy. I'm not sure if I had ever been in the presence of genius before. Kind of leaves your mouth hanging open.
Yeah. That is special.Did he live in Tennessee?I have seen pictures of the trailer he lived in; I'm not sure where.Ol'Shep!I never heard this!Towns just blew me away
Ive just found John Townes Van Zandt in the last 3 or 4 weeks. This artist is refreshing and I think he,s the real deal. It's a long time since Ive been moved by any singer /songwriter! Van Zandt does not take any prisoners and just sings his heart out. He went to young like the best of them. Although I must say this man, s songs and poetry are special. RIP. John Townes Van Zandt, where ever you are..
True grit. Townes van Zandt was the greatest songwriter who ever lived, and no-one can deliver his songs like he did. My unchallenged favorite ever since I came under his spell some 30 years ago.
"enigma " or walking contradiction ????Townes did it his way ,and sold out to pop bullshit . And it cost him everything , a true genius that should be more celebrated as a national treasure!!! 27:00
I met Townes in Verde, Nevada, in Sept., 1996, 4 mos. before his untimely death... Called home to Houston to tell a friend, if TVZ came back through, don't put it off. He wasn't long for a weary world... A most memorable evening for a fan of since late 60's, sho had seen him around Houston a couple times... Played the Wake a couple times i. Galveston... RIP.
Search out his early live performances, if you haven't already. He's magical. Sacred. Voice clear and sparkling like the purest mountain stream. Best American singer songwriter to ever walk the Earth.
I'm always gonna love me some = van zandt.. and he's always gonna love him some good life and real troubles , and I'm always gonna understand the same by them so we will always trade-off and enjoy life on this Earth
I hadn't heard "Old Shep" in nearly seven decades--I wish TVZ had sung it straight. My late father would sometimes sing that song from my mother's and his bedroom when I was a child about to drift off to sleep in my own room down the hall.
ha! why can't we just say such-and-such is my favorite? I'm very sure that's a bit more balanced an appraisal. Just enjoy his work and don't worry who's the best...✌
Dylan, Cohen, and Van Zandt, each had their own styles and their own lives to reflect on. Who was the best at writing stories? I'm willing to put all three on the top and let them share the honor of 'best.'
Thank You, Thank you, & thank you. Definitely a worthy compilation of songs to add to the collection. If only he had included "Rake" to this album. My soul is the song "Rake"
I am enjoying you so much!! Thank you for sharing your gift. It makes me smile!! Figure that out? 1952/2024 and finding wonders in life. Long ways to go yet!.smile people tell each other hello on the sidewalk/grocery store don't let covid, government satan tske the light out of our world. So sad for what things have become for us all. I will do my best to spread smiles and sunshine where ever I go. Do the same, make an effort. 15:03
Thank you...A rare treat. On the other hand why would anyone censure Townes Van Zandt? I've been listening to him for longer than I know. Dead Flowers anyone?
i don’t think anyone is censuring tvz. someone (his estate?) has the rights to this album and everytime we listen to these albums, it is one less purchase of the album…. i believe that is why that disclaimer was written.
Thats weird, this is the second time listening and on the first time there was a time stamped comment for the songs, now there is nothing. Gone. Weird. Why would that happen?
@@mr.jazzbodkelsey58 There's actually another version of this CD with a slightly different tracklisting. I think it was a ltd edition, but I haven't been able to track it down yet.
Okay, Townes was a deeply flawed individual but universally revered among singer/songwriters for his abilities. His own mother reportedly regretted allowing treatments that erased most of his childhood memories.. that's what he had to go on.. remember your childhood?.. Townes didn't.. ❤

Sounds like a gift of God. Dark, masculine, cynical. So much unlike modern "country" music.

Powerful! Possibily my favourite late Townes live recording. A man, a guitar and some gut wrenching songs. Superb!
