Rex Bell and Dale Sofar owned The Old Quarter, a downtown hippie bar in the late 60's and 70's. Laid back doesn't begin to describe the place. Townes and Guy played there. Lots o' folks (pun intended) did.

    • @TbirdMan
      @TbirdMan Год назад

Played there once or twice, didn't know Townes, but I found his music a little depressing...unlike say, John Prine or even Don Sanders - what happened to him? A lot of Houston talent came and went at the Quarter.

I remember watching him climb onto a BSA Victor one night late. He was pretty drunk, and when he roared off into the night I thought, 'Well, that's the last I'll ever see of Townes.' When I saw him the next day, I was shocked and relieved. How he made it home that night is still a mystery. Yeah, I knew him well. I never worked with him back in the day, but I was Guy Clark's first sideman when he decided to present his music in an ensemble format. That was 1969.

Wow. You have some experiences and stories to tell. Or not to tell, I guess. But you were right there with our heroes of singing and songwriting. And you played alongside Guy Clark. You were mixing in some rich brew there. I’m jealous! Though I know that rich brew got complicated, too. You must be a damn good player, because I’m pretty sure Guy didn’t play with any slouches. I hope those are great memories for you.
Thanks for sharing that bit of your story. Are you still playing?

@@douglove2412 just at home. my bandstand days are long since over. I retired early ('97) and just did solo gigs. I'd go in with an archtop guitar and a small amp. I had a song list with maybe 70-80 tunes and just pick them at random. I never sang while people were eating. got paid well and usually had dinner on the house. that was my 'end game.' I taught HS English for 25 yrs.

Ride the blue wind high and free
She'll lead you down through misery
Leave you low, come time to go
Alone and low as low can be
    If I had a nickel I'd find a game
If I won a dollar I'd make it rain
If it rained an ocean I'd drink it dry
    And lay me down dissatisfied
There's legs to walk and thoughts to fly
Eyes to laugh and lips to cry
    A restless tongue to classify
All born to grow and grown to die
So tell my mother I did no wrong
Tell my baby I said so long
Tell my brother to watch his own
And tell my friends to mourn me none
Chained upon the face of time
    Feelin' full of foolish rhyme
There ain't no dark till something shines
I'm bound to leave this dark behind
Ride the blue wind high and free
She'll lead you down through misery
Leave you low, come time to go
