I live in Glasgow, Scotland. Linked this to a friend in Colorado to which she replied "You do know there is a trail race from Crested Butte to Aspen" (we are both trail runners) - this August, I will journey across the ocean to pay my regards to Townes and Amigo. From the bottom of my heart, thank you Mr Earle for sharing this story.
My uncle has lived in Crested Butte CO for many years and I’ve spent many summers there. The most beautiful country I have EVER seen. I started listening to Townes fairly recently and he has quickly become my favorite songwriter, and learning about the time he spent in that area has added to and mixed in with my appreciation for his work in a very special way. Now these things that mean so much to me, Townes and the land around Crested Butte, are all interconnected, as they should be. The last time I visited Crested Butte I found myself listening to Townes in the car the whole time and the music just paired with the scenery so well.
I named my cat Amigo, after the introduction to this song, because it nails the bond between human and animal. Sorry it isn’t a horse, Townes, it was the best I could do.
Truly a moving video for me. I had the good fortune to see Steven multiple times on this tour b/c my brother was his tour manager. My brother died recently, so seeing this knowing that my brother was responsible for the sound/mixing at this gig is really special and moving. Making it even more significant is that I think I might now own the guitar Steve is playing in this video (if not the specific guitar, an identical make and model). Missing my brother, but thankful I have my memories and these videos...(i've met the blue dog, too!).
I had the great pleasure of meeting Steve Earle about 12 years ago in co Donegal Ireland. he was doing a gig in Jacksons hotel Ballybofey. He was a true gent and everything i always thought he would be.
STEVE, YOU, TOWNES, AND JOHN PRINE ARE MY FAVORITE SONGWRITERS, MAY TOWNES AND JOHN R.I.P., YOU ARE THE ONLY ONE LEFT BROTHER, STAY SAFE, ALL MY BEST, COUSIN FIGEL
This kind of reminds me of the old days at Bobby Bridger performances, where the spoken word and the song just flowed in and out. Thanks to Steve for being the keeper of Townes' flame.
I have listened to this thousands of times...I play it all day or all week long sometimes...I know, I'm obscessed, but I can't help it...#LOVESTEVEEARLE
I've been from Aspen to Crested. Sure wish that I ran into Townes and Amigo...and Steve too..I was solo on my steel horse. H.Davidson heritage classic..dirt road for many miles. No cars, people or anything til I reached Crested.
I play and sing many Steve Earle tunes and have thankfully been to a number of his performances. The coolest time was when I waved him over to talk at the Ottawa Folk Festival and we shook hands and chatted over a fence until someone whisked him away, when I was mid sentence. His manager ? broke our hands apart to get him moving on. I guess he was late for the bus, I may never know, unless he reads this comment!
I remember one winter, it's been a while ago too. If I had been on a mountain, it would have been snowing only on mine. Remember that winter well, unfortunately.
Man, it's got to be hard to keep up playing that long without a break. What a performance and what a tribute to Townes. Fact, I have the butterfly from the Townes album tattooed on my left arm, and it's the only tattoo I have on that arm.
i wanted to go see steve when he was near me a few years ago..and now im just sick about it,that i didnt go..nothing iregret more than not going to see him/hear him....this was so beautiful, that introduction was so touchingly beautiful as well! enjoyed this very much! thanks for posting it! theres just no one quite like steve!

Couldn't be a better tribute to Townes than this beautiful song. Always brings a tear. Thanks Steve. K

I heard Towns' version this weekend in my car and broke down crying. I didn't know what was happening - this song is just so beautiful and I lost it.
+Raaron I love the Jack Elliot one with Nanci Griffith. What a song!
Townes just hits that certain spot in your soul that just makes you cry when you listen to him sing
Beautiful songs, Beautiful story, I love 'snow like low flying ghosts!'
We, who know of these people, and are attracted by the talent are the blessed recipients.
It's one of the saddest ever wrote

Good to see him looking healthy... When I met him he was strung out... Always been talented but he has a little Townes in him... Sad... Bob
I got to meet Steve after a show he was really cool we had a great talk about Towns Van Zant
I saw him this summer with Emmy Lou Harris. Still amazing, living legend.
I always felt like Rex's Blues was a lullabye from Townes to Rex. It's just perfect and Steve Earle does it justice.
What a wonderful Requiem for his friend

His story about townes losing his horse broke my heart. Been a life long fan of townes, and a new fan of steve

Talkin' blues, Mr. Steve.
Steve keeps on keepin on .He speaks and sings and plays it all together into this that would make Townes proud of him

He's so awesome!!!!!!
Fort Worth Blues - so good a tribute to Townes Van Zandt that Guy Clark - Guy Clark! - said it said it all for him.
True that! Glad you enjoyed the show!
A true troubadour in Townes's image. Peace. Out.

Great song but adds in the middle of it ruin the though of it...
I love Steve, but he doesn’t have the right kind of vocals for Rex’s Blues.
Isn’t America great. Anybody can have a career in music.
It's a great song but just another ode to heroin.
Nope
Meh. I'm a huge TVZ fan, too raspy and this pickin' was not so good. That's what was so good about Townes. Nice tribute though.
