I'd say things can go badly enough in Moscow, not on the battlefield, that the russians DO actually have to leave Ukraine. And that's the way it's currently trending. The vertical of power is strong, but brittle. NATO has the ability outlast putin, it will just come down to the will to do so.

Of course can we speak about how the war in Ukraine ends for good: the only way is for the Russian people, en masse, to realize how badly they are being misused and exploited, and demand, or create, fundamental changes. The Ukrainians, at a very high cost to themselves, are giving them a chance to do exactly that.

I believe Ukraine can attain a victory that includes regaining all their land, but it means a commitment by us in the West to maintain the support indefinitely and to resist the urge to accept a conditional ceasefire. Putin has to know that he cannot wait the West out and there is not breathing room to rebuild.

Russia will win if the West stops supporting Ukraine. And Ukraine can win if the West continues its support, and it will win sooner if they increase their support. Russia was forced to withdraw from Afghanistan after significantly less losses, they knew they could not win. It’s almost as if we want there to be a frozen war with one fifth of Ukraine occupied by Russia. And a comprehensive win for Ukraine comes with a Brucie bonus. Refugees will be able to return to their homes, and no longer have to seek refuge in Europe.

It in inevitable that Puitn will lose this war. Many commentators don't understand why. It's a simple numbers game - resources. Putin's economy was half that of the UK when he started this war - it's even worse now - he is going to run out of money to buy weapons and pay for his army. It' doesn't take a monetary economist to realise that it's not a good thing when your economy is based upon energy exports and your largest customer walks away. It's not a good thing when your central bank raises interest rates to 19%, 4 times that of the UK. We are witnessing the fall of a dictator - it really is that simple.

@@paulpaisley5291 The size of the cake and how it is apportioned are different things. Last winter, most likely again this winter, several Russian cities went without heating and water, due to lack of investment in maintaining infrastructure. I doubt the same will be the case in the UK.
Assisting UK pensioners and to what degree is a political decision. Many UK pensioners do have a starting point of being very much better off than Russian pensioners, I suspect much more than double Russian pensioners' income,. where you draw the line on winter fuel allowances is a political decision. Those with private or work pensions on top of state pensions can in retirement be getting two or three times another persons working salary, those not at this extreme would benefit from some state help since fuel prices have risen so much in recent years.
You cannot compare GDP comparisons and political decisions about how government wealth is spent on a simple ratio comparison.

One key goal of any acceptable solution has to be that Russia is deterred from trying again in the near future. One sure way would be for Ukraine to join NATO and for Western troops to be stationed in Ukraine. How to get there is the question. Russia giving up and withdrawing from all of Ukraine would be one way.
Short of that, I don’t think NATO would want to station troops in Ukraine without some sort of deal between Ukraine and Russia.

Regime change is the definition of the surest shortest way to a "win", if we are talking about restoring "peace", through the cessation of the active combat. This is because Putin, and his delusional ambitions, are the sole "casus belli" for this war. This war will end within 6 months of Putin's removal, no matter how much saber rattling his successor may do in the short run. This is simply because Russia has essentially already been defeated militarily, and Russia has been economically wrecked. '

Mark talks about the different countries of the west seeing different threats as being more relevant to them; surely, the point point about the world today is that all these threats are actually each just part of the same growing problem, and we should be treating them as such and dealing with them using a holistic approach rather than trying to tackle them individually.
The piecemeal approach is 'short termism' at its most dangerous and only ensures that the issues will fester and grow until the whole thing gets out of hand and out of control, just as with the second world war.
The various governments throughout the western world think they are so clever in persuing each their own approach whilst trying to influence the others into their way of things. In reality they are all stuck up their own arses and really have no idea what they are doing.

Finally a guest that has a true realistic unbiased view over the conflict. Neither Russia or Ukraine can truly win this war and for Zelensky to call a peace plan a victory plan is both ridiculous and provoking at the same time imo... This can only end with compromise on both parts as unfortunate that might be (for Ukraine).

WW2 did not end with compromise. Lasting peace came from total victory. Total victory came from total commitment. Frozen conflicts keep on erupting again and again.

@trqster All politicians, no matter what party, do have a habit of putting spin on words. However, regarding ridiculous, Russia has no chance of taking the major cities it tells Ukraine must hand over for Russia's "peace plan".
imo, this is a war which must play itself out, neither side is really at a point of making concessions or compromising. Also the assumption is that this is a "Ukraine" war. Russia would have to show it has no further intentions of expansion.

Probably true, but, after 3 years of fighting with little ground gained in the last two years, it looks likely that Russia can’t win the war either. Ukraine has no real choice but to continue; so the only real question is: how long is Putin prepared to allow Russia’s citizens to suffer the terrible effects of a futile war that hugely damages its economy as well as its political reputation and standing? This is looking less like strong leadership and more like obstinate stupidity by the day.
