Russia appears to be an elephant but is only a mouse. We must see the economic, technological and military “power” of Russia in perspective. Russia is indeed a huge country in square km, but only has (a declining) 144 million inhabitants (Mexico 128 million, Japan 123 million, Indonesia 270 million). This is about 30% of USA or Eurozone. The GDP of Russia however is only 4% of the GDP of the Eurozone + USA, this is equal to the GDP of the small countries Belgium + Netherlands + Luxembourg. And less than the GDP of the state of California. Relatively (per capita) the GDP of Russia is very low. Beside that the economy of Russia has signs of a 3th world economy. Half of the income is coming from oil & gas. Based on this, Russia isn’t a world power. And for sure, it isn’t an economic power. This is the reason they can’t build up and maintain a big army. The army they have is far beyond normal proportions in relation to their GDP. This hurts their budgets and prosperity permanently. In this perspective, Russia is merely a mouse, but a mouse with a huge superiority complex and dangerous megalomaniac dreams. The path the mouse chose will be its downfall and must be its downfall.

Changes in tactics as a knock on effect with weapons used or desired. So a scream for tanks can then be followed by the absence of their use. The same for F16s , when they arrive the idea of full on counter attack is replaced by stealth of position and drone attacks. Its now a question of reserving force and starving the enemy. Uts better to reduce Russian stock piles than ask the West for competing volumes of equipment. The calm way of damaging the Kerch bridge, but not destroying it, leads to the gradual destruction of the Russian navy and ferry boats, once they are gone the bridge can be immobilized.

I think the Donesk region is just right to give away. It has limited infrastructure limited running water and electricity. The minerals are the only thing that's worth anything. Trade it for something nice.

The only Way Donald trump doesn't do what he says is if he gets very wise advice from his Educated colleagues and thank god they were there last time but at the end of his term, we've seen what he can get away with when he does what he wants. GOOD God I hope his base realize this.

Wish they'd stop with the 'boy who cried wolf' shtick....the point of that story is that the wolf eventually turns up and eats everything
While the villagers were now ignoring those,er, 'red lines'....just sayin'!

Especially when you consider that Russia has actually acted multiple times when red lines are crossed. That's how this war started after all.

I prefer foundering myself, although they have come to mean the same thing. When a ship founders, runs aground, it means it's near the end which I think equates more accurately to Putin's situation, although he does flounder around quite a bit too. Plus, they are bottom feeders, and their eyes only look one way.

I'm pretty shocked that former ambassador Kurt Volker does not seem to know how the mass mobilization is currently working in Russia. To imagine that they are getting 30K recruits without effort is pretty naive. The mobilization isn't public, it's under the table. The FSB now has a complete list of all civilians, and men now need to check every few days to see if they have been mobilized, I don't recall the ages, but it's at least between age 18-70 (I'm not making up that age limitation of 70 yrs old). They have I think it's 7 days to turn themselves in for training & being sent to the front. How do I know this? By paying attention to those folks who are tied in on a daily basis to the heartbeat of Russia. Konstantin of InsideRussia is one extremely good blogger in this space.
