I am 52 years old and I’ve ALWAYS been uncomfortable with eyeshadow because all of the tutorials way back when made my eyes look tiny. Almost every “don’t” you mentioned was something I’ve done all my makeup wearing life. I kept thinking “whoa! No wonder!” Thank you so much for this video. It’s completely changed my perspective and I’m eager to use these tips.
I'm 51 and didn't know until a neighbor commented this summer and just confirmed it lol -I love my eyes so I just thought I was doing dark eyeshadow wrong lol well WHO KNEW lol
Tutorials when I was a teen were not designed for people with deep-set, hooded, or monolid eyes. They were all designed for perfect almond eyes, or at most, protruding or upturned eyes. I just thought I was terrible at everything, lost a lot of self-confidence, and gave up on makeup. Please note that youtube did not exist when I was in high school. It wasn't a thing at all until I was a freshman in college.
Same boat. I'm 34 and genuinely thought I was just fucking terrible at it because all tutorials were for 'perfect lids/eyes' and I felt so self conscious wearing makeup. Now, I'm able to try a little and hopefully not suck at it. However Ive become a lot more comfortable with my face bare than with makeup.
8:27 i am LITERALLY ABOUT TO SCREAM. HOW did i live my whole life doing every single solitary thing on the "dont" eye. for 28 years i've just assumed "eye makeup will never look as good on me as other people" and i never even wondered why. this is GAME CHANGING and i cannot wait to try this. thank you SO SO MUCH
Nikkia Joy Great video I am a new subscriber happened to come across this and it was excellent I really needed this help you just went a little too fast for me. LOL please help us make up challenge people! Absolutely agree with the above can you do something for different looks For a hooded eyes like the crease people do? Thank you!
this is SUCH a game-changer. I always just assumed I was terrible at makeup, but it turns out I was just following the wrong instructions! thank you so much for such a clear tutorial. you rock!!!
I have avoided doing any kind of eye shadow makeup for my entire adult life because it NEVER looked good. Turns out, I was using ALL the wrong techniques. ALL OF THEM. Every last one you listed. thank you for a side-by-side comparison and the list of DO's and Don'ts. I feel inspired to give it another try
Me too I've never heard the term hooded eyes before. I just said I have puffy eye lids😂. Thanks for the tips for the first time in my life I will wear eyeshadow with my makeup now
Exactly!!! I was doing every. step. wrong. And now I know why I thought I was bad at putting on eyeliner and lashes! This is the FIRST time I accepted that I have hooded eyes. Thank you SO much!
I never realized my eyes were considered hooded until now. I’m 41 years old. I’ve been doing make-up wrong my entire life. 🤦🏻♀️ I’m going to try these tips.
right!! i’m glad that i found this now, i’m 15 haha. i was so confused as to why my eyeliner looked awful, makes sense now lol. i had no clue i had hooded eyes.
I didn’t know I had hooded eyes until last month when I went to a very rude unprofessional makeup artist who was not familiar with hooded almond shaped eyes she literally did my makeup really bad , used the wrong lashes and said she did her best the reason why my makeup didn’t turn out good is cause I have droopy eyes. That broke me and made me self cautious. Until I watched videos like this. This video helped me a lot thank you so much. I’m so glad I learned my eye shape and what works for me ❤️
I hope you gave that person a terrible review. It is literally NEVER the fault of a person’s features that makeup doesn’t turn out well. Make up is for everyone and the point of being a professional is to be able to work with different kinds of features to enhance whatever that person likes. They couldn’t admit that they were not talented enough to know what to do. Those of us with her ties know that they are more difficult and you have to have more technical skills. I’m so sorry this person gave you struggles with your self-esteem. If it makes you feel any better, Megan Fox has hooded eyes, and Britney Spears has famously droopy eyes. Both gorgeous. And those are just the first two that are popping into my head. I’m sure you are beautiful and I’m so sorry that some trashy person tried to make you feel badly for their own shortcomings
That's exactly why I'm here. I'm a beginner MUA and my eyes are almond. I am practicing on my friends and hooded eyes are literally my biggest challenge. But I'm here to master!
That "artist" is very unprofessional and rude! There are some very stunning celebrities with hooded eyes, including Jennifer Lawrence 😍 There is NOTHING wrong with hooded eyes! They are just a feature, and they make you, you. I personally think they are cute. I don't want everyone looking like the same plastic doll face!
i actually find that i prefer winged lashes so long as i place them correctly! lashes that are too long in the middle tend to cover up a lot of the bright area created; instead, i use a half lash or a winged lash to show more of the brighter space. to compensate and make sure my eyes aren't looking droopy, i just adjust where i glue down the outter corner of the lash. the curve of the outer lash should follow the line you made with your winged liner, not cover up the wing and drag it down. highly recommend this technique as it avoids looking like the lashes are wearing you vs the other way around.
Me either and I did not even know I had hooded eyes and I always bought the lashes that were nice and long and wingy at the end ..I was dong EVERYTHING wrong !! Smh
I love your cosmetics, and have bought many of your pigments, and yet I just found your RUclips channel today! One of the best, hooded eye videos, I found. Thank you!
Thats fine Ally!! All of these tips are designed to work for semi hooded or fully hooded eyes!! You're eyes are beautiful no matter what shape or size!!!
Thank you for the confidence! I always hated my hooded eyes, I wanted what my friends had, they had pretty bright eyes that were like wide-open. Turns out mine are just hooded.
@@Bethanywi Your welcome! Mine are rounded almonds, and big, but still hooded. I was always jealous of girls who had a lot of eyelid space for eyeshadow, but I've learned to love my eye shape, and that just minimal makeup suits me better.
Im no where near a model or anything like that, but I’ve always thought I look better without makeup than with, this kind of explains that… Not a humble brag I just didn’t know how to properly do makeup for my eye type until now 😂
@@molliee5183 That's how I learned my eyes were slightly hooded... I would try makeup looks I saw on YT and they looked awful on me. Less is more in our case.
Amazing- the most concise, thorough, understandable and easily followed instructions I’ve come across. I’ve watched a bunch of videos about hooded eyes and this is the first time I understand what to do! Without having to watch some 30 minute marathon video! Thank you :-)
Trust me, you can still be as goth as your heart desires even with hooded eyes. All you need to do is learn where to use the right techniques and you can modify pretty much any look or tutorial to work for you. Also, there is no one way to do “goth makeup”, so you don’t have to do anything that just doesn’t work for your eye shape. in fact, if you did the look in this video using black, white, and grey, it would pair very nicely with any gothic inspired outfit 😊
This is the best and most helpful video I have ever seen on hooded eye tips! I can’t wait to try them out. Eye shadow for me has become a nightmare as I’ve aged and my lids have become more droopy. This is awesome - thank you so much!! 😁
This video was incredibly helpful! Just seeing the difference between the two eyes astounded me. I love playing with fun eyeshadow looks but could never understand why they never turned out or "looked" as good as I was hoping. I will definitely be incorporating these tips in the future. Thank you so much
Thank you! I'm a guy who sometimes wears makeup on stage. My husband does drag, and he's got all his techniques, but that doesn't help me! I have serious hooded eyes and this helped me so much I can't even tell you. There are tutorials out there for guys, sure, but this really hit home for me. Thank you so much!
Kathryn Suthers - if you ever would like to give a wing a crack but don’t trust your skills with a liquid pen then I’d highly recommend a straight flat brush (makeup forever do a decent one) with a good quality gel pot and you can stamp it on. Kinda easier with hooded eyes (especially if you have asymmetrical hoods) as the brush will accurately predict where your liner will go before you put it down. If you wanna be extra cautious then you can use a light shadow on the flat brush first as a map out and then grab a liquid. Either way, flat brush is my favorite brush for work near the lash line with hooded eyes. Fast too 🙂
Kathryn Suthers - if it’s any help I believe it’s the Makeup forever eye brush# 256 (flat straight liner defined). Basically it’s flat and square looking. Good luck 👍🏻🍀
I've only just discovered this video I have terribly hooded eyes and it wasn't until a few years ago I discovered what hooded eyes were and understood why my winged liner never worked. Absolutely my favourite video I've watched in 2021. Amazing! Thank you ❤
This was such a great video. It ‘opened’ my eyes to a whole new way of doing makeup. I’ve always avoided eyeshadows because I hated how they made my eyes look but turns out I was just applying it all wrong! It also validated some of my own makeup “quirks” like using beige on my lower lid, only using dark eyeshadow on the bottom outer, and if wearing eyeliner at all to do it thin. Yay!
I was never taught make up by family or friends, assuming I was just completely rubbish at it - turns out, I was just doing it wrong. Between these eye tips and contouring correctly, you've given me so much confidence back. Thank you.
I've watched this video like 6 times now and I am committing these steps to memory. It is such a good video. Comparing the do's and don'ts at the same time make it so easy to understand!
Not gonna lie, that eye-shadow and lipstick you were wearing in the intro damn near made me click off this video, but you actually do have a lot of really good tips for my own eye shape. Proof of not judging a book by its cover, I'd say.
love that you made this!! when I was just getting into make up a few years ago there were (almost) no beauty gurus with hooded eyes and I always felt like my eyes were less then. I couldn't make my make up look the way they had it. I've figured out what works for me since then, but these tips will defo help me rise to a new level!
Oh my god youre an angel! I've always been sad because I felt like I failed in every makeup tutorial on youtube...So I have always prefered makeup artists to do my make up. Some of them nailed it, but of course not all. Also I have been a hobby model and there was a time when I had to model in a wedding dress and the wedding dress company had a deal with a makeup salon and when I was abt to go to makeup the makeup artist said "How I am supposed to do your make up?, You don't even have eyelids. " The wedding salon owner were shocked abt this answer and so was I, because it's not really that bad and most makeup artists managed to do my make up. And even worse, when the catwalk ended and the show was over and we were taking photos of each other (with other models) and I had those really big heels and I was wearing a long dress and I stumbled (didn't fall) when my friend was about to take a picture of me and they were filming it and posted on facebook on their salon page. I wrote to their dm and asked why were you filming this, the show was already over and this video should not be here and it's insulting. They said, "well we didn't have time to film during the show, so we just took a video after the show..." I kindly asked this to be taken down...so they did... But idk why should they do this? I'm sure it isn't something you want your clients to see; basically laughing when models stumble or fall. Then another time, my friend, who is a recent makup artist said: " I don't want to do makeup on your eyes, because your eyes are freaky-shaped." So that's my story...
Another great tutorial! I thought I knew all the hooded eye tricks before watching... but I had no idea about the eye brow tail, I didn't know to flick the liner wing AFTEr passing the crease, AND I have avoided wearing false lashes for a decade because I didn't know there was a shape better suited to my eye shape (I always thought the lashes longer on the ends would help, but now I know why they didn't!) Seriously this is the best video for us hooded eye girls!!! Well done Nikkia!
At 52 years old, there’s not a lot of life changing things out there that I would be willing to put any effort into. This video made that minuscule cut! I’ve watched it maybe 5 times but today I hit pause and copied what she did at every step. OMG, I have never, ever, EVER been happy with my eye makeup until I finished copying this technique. I’ve always made most of the “don’t” mistakes, clarifying why I’ve never been happy with it. Thank you doesn’t even begin to cover my gratitude. I’ve already taken selfies, sent them to family and friends, and shared the video with my little sister who deals with the hooded eye too.
Can you do a tutorial with a darker look and a vibrant look for hooded eyes all the tutorials I've seen are for more natural looks and I can never get the in your face look pow that I love
Thank you so much for this tutorial!! I've spent almost a half century avoiding eye makeup because it never looked quite right. I shudder to imagine how much $ I've wasted on lashes that were all wrong for me. It's never too late to learn!!
I didn't realize I had hooded eyes until about a year ago. I always wondered why I struggled so much with wings, which is my everyday look. Now I know better, so I've been watching a lot of hooded eye videos. This video by far is the best! The eyebrow tip alone I think will work wonders for me! I can't wait to try these tips!! Thank you!
My hooded eyes have always posed such a challenge! All I want is to recreate the looks I see on social, but now I see what I've been doing wrong. WOW . Thanks Nikkia, keep up the great content
@@nikkiajoy Please keep these types of videos coming! My two sisters have the EXACT same eye shape as me and they struggle even more :( I will be sharing your channel with them xoxo
When I raise my eye brows, and then lower them back down, my hooded eyes fold into a “double chin” like crease that I have to adjust with my fingers to get it back to a single fold. I thought this would be a funny thing to share When it comes to the video: THANK YOU! I would actually avoid makeup at all costs because I thought it just “didn’t work for me” or “didn’t look good on my face” and this video changed that for me. I will definitely learn how to do this just in time for Junior prom! ❤️❤️❤️
This was wonderful! I never knew I had hooded eyes until this year. I struggled with the creasing and gunky/oiled up eyeshadow after a few hours of wear so I just quit wearing it figuring I was just bad at makeup. I even primed my eyelid but I still had creasing but I never did translucent powder so maybe that was my downfall there. Recently, in my late 30s, I've felt I'd love to get into wearing it more and watching a reel on Instagram helped me figure out I had hooded eyes. Your video is super bright and it's really great how you filmed it. Clear and easy to see the difference in application. Will definitely be referencing this in my next attempt! ETA: I also wear glasses if not obvious from my pfp so eyeshadow just seemed so hidden on my face. Excited to try again!
You just explained this better than any single video I have ever seen!! I was already doing a lot of these things just from my own experience working with my eyes. Halfway through the video I was tweezing away the tails of my brows and it was a total game changer! You just made eyeshadow fun for me again 😁 xo. Love from your new subscriber
8:45 the end result is insane!!!! Wow it looks like two different people. Thanks so much for this video, I will change what I’ve been doing immediately 😁🤩
OMG this was so helpful to watch! I never realized how my eyeshawdow application was making my hooded eyes look so much smaller and the lashes i use. THANK YOU so much for this!
Thank you for this!!! Never knew how to handle my hooded eyes, but last night I used this video to create a look for a first date, and I felt so beautiful and so confident 🥰

Omg!!! Giant ah ha moment when you said take the liner PAST the end of the eye "missing the fold"... Genius, thank you so much ❤️
Love this. Hooded eyes are a little different. I can't do a wing to save my life, so I just stick with a thin lining of the upper lash line.
Me too!!
I can't do it either. So instead I apply a thin line of the blackest eye shadow I have. Sometimes I work it into the lash line as well.
Fast too 🙂
@@Nohandletoday thank you! I will try that!
Kathryn Suthers - if it’s any help I believe it’s the Makeup forever eye brush# 256 (flat straight liner defined). Basically it’s flat and square looking. Good luck 👍🏻🍀
This is such a quality tutorial! I feel like I can go and do the things with my eye makeup now! Thank you!
Best technique I’ve ever watched. Getting ready for a wedding - this is so helpful.
Yay I hope the wedding was fab. X
Great tutorial! I loooove how close you got so we could really see what you were doing.
I LEGIT do every. Last. Thing. On the "don't" side. I think I can smell my life changing...
SAME!
For the last 20 yrs i struggled to make my hooded eyes look bigger and better.
Today at 40, i finally nailed it and i cannot Thank You Enough. ❤
Ohhh you’re so welcome!!
Thank you.
This is the most informative hooded eye tutorial ever and I've seen tons of them!
Crap, I'm guilty of all of the "don't"s! Thank you so much for the tips! I'm a new subscriber now :)
Glad I'm not the only one, lol.😂😂
looks like we were all doing this cause that's what is recommended for rounded eyes with a crease lol

I've watched this video like 6 times now and I am committing these steps to memory. It is such a good video. Comparing the do's and don'ts at the same time make it so easy to understand!
I’m so glad you found it helpful xx
Not gonna lie, that eye-shadow and lipstick you were wearing in the intro damn near made me click off this video, but you actually do have a lot of really good tips for my own eye shape. Proof of not judging a book by its cover, I'd say.
BoredomIsAnUnderstatement saame i found it so unpleasant to the eye but im glad i stayed
I was thinking the exact same thing... The thumbnail got me but the intro almost made me leave... Glad I stayed as well.. Fellow hoodie..
Thought the same thing!🙋🏻♀️ But she really did do a great job, great tips!
Same here. I was like “Ummm...” and then I watched more and was very, very happy.
@@jords5757 Glad I could be of assistance, then.
love that you made this!! when I was just getting into make up a few years ago there were (almost) no beauty gurus with hooded eyes and I always felt like my eyes were less then. I couldn't make my make up look the way they had it. I've figured out what works for me since then, but these tips will defo help me rise to a new level!
Emma you are correct, this is the best tutorial, I have ever seen.
@@andreawheatley5528 there's better
Love how tips like this can change so much .. never gave a thought to my lashes before.. but thanks to you I will x. Take care everyone 😉
This is the video I have been searching for. I cannot wait to look into more videos. The way you explained it is perfection!!!
Wow this video is perfection ! Such a massive difference, this helps so much! Love you Nikkia, thank you!!
YAAAS girl! I love my hooded eyes, they're a beautiful shape!
Aww I'm so glad my video has helped Amy!! Hooded eyes are beautiful and it's honestly the easiest, simplest changes that make such a big difference!!!
@@nikkiajoy Please keep these types of videos coming! My two sisters have the EXACT same eye shape as me and they struggle even more :( I will be sharing your channel with them xoxo
Thank you soooo much!! I’ve always had issues with this and the lashes were a revelation!! Love your channel Nikkia!! ❤️❤️
Watched multiple hooded eye tips videos. This one is by far the best, most helpful, and to the point! Thank you!!!
I really don’t know why but I love the “droopy look” 😂 I dont have hooded eyes but I think they’re so beautiful💙

It can be very beautiful too.
Really?
Well i wish i didnt have hooded eyes
Me too lol. I thought it was just me
I love it too. I have always loved my eyes
When I raise my eye brows, and then lower them back down, my hooded eyes fold into a “double chin” like crease that I have to adjust with my fingers to get it back to a single fold. I thought this would be a funny thing to share
When it comes to the video: THANK YOU! I would actually avoid makeup at all costs because I thought it just “didn’t work for me” or “didn’t look good on my face” and this video changed that for me. I will definitely learn how to do this just in time for Junior prom! ❤️❤️❤️
OMG the comparison of the two eyes were crazy! Thank you so much for this video!
😘😘
It’s crazy , I’ve seen so many hooded eye tutorials on here ; this is the best one yet I’ve seen so far
Nikkia: “Everyone’s perfect”
Me: “OMG Nikkia, you’re perfect!” 😭

Best comment ever 😭😭😂😂😂😂🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🥂

I never knew my eyes were hooded, this really helps.
OMG this was so helpful to watch! I never realized how my eyeshawdow application was making my hooded eyes look so much smaller and the lashes i use. THANK YOU so much for this!
This was the most accurate and useful information for hooded eyes I’ve ever seen in my life!
I have watched heaps of hooded eyes tutorials and this is the best I have seen hands down!
Thank you for this!!! Never knew how to handle my hooded eyes, but last night I used this video to create a look for a first date, and I felt so beautiful and so confident 🥰
This video is literally amazing! The difference is so dramatic! Thank youuuuu!
I actually love my hooded eyes.. didn't expect all these comments about trying to get rid of it..
Omg I’ve been doing my hooded eyes the wrong way the whole time lol
Me too! I always thought more eyeliner would make my eyes really pop. Now I know why my eyes look like slits in every photo since I was 13.

Nikkia describes what hooded eyes are
Everyone watching: immediately pauses video and looks in their camera or mirror to see if they have hooded eyes.
😂🙌
I have always had a hooded eye, but being 54 now, my skin is a bit crepe, and drooping more on the lids. This is why I need a more instructional look, as she has done here.
Do you have a look for dark smokey eye with hooded eyes? Mine seems to never look good and I like to wear it for girls night out sometimes
This was very helpful. It's by far one of the BEST makeup tutorials EVER! Simply spectacular. Thank you.
Omg I just found out that my eyes are hooded jajaja thanks so much for this girl!!! And definitely the don'ts u could see a big difference. Two different persons in one jejeje. Thanks for this tip
Thank you for this video. All the “Don’ts” is what I always do 😩
Me too 😭😭
Hello! I'll be doing my Mom's makeup and she has hooded eyes. This video has been very helpful and educational to me. Thank you so much for giving a very informative video!! ❤
Could you tell me what brushes on what steps as well as the products
The whole don't section was my eye routine! Gonna try this one for my birthday next week! You are an angel thankyou ❤️
This video is really what I needed today! I felt understood and loved as weird as it can sound!
My body and face changed a lot these last 2 years, I just did not recognize myself and quit putting on makeup because nothing seemed to make sense anymore.
My techniques did not match all the changes...
This is very empowering.
Bless you too !
This made my day!!! I’m doing everything right for my big FAT hooded eyes 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣 love u 😘😘😘😘😘
Haha I'm sure you're eyes are GORJ!!!!!!! Love you too girl xx
Hahaha! Mine are fat too! No brow bone coming over mine. Just a bunch of puffy skin! 🤣
I think right eye is more hooded than the left one, so as I watched many makeup videos they did the dos for left eye and dons for right eye!
Everything makes so much more sense now..... I figured out some of this on my own but some was a genuine surprise. THANK YOU!!
Well. This explains why my eyeshadow is always so dramatically creasing!! My eyes are hooded 😂
