In this video we talk about PAN LAW or PAN DEPTH, we take a look and explain the various settings, and if and how the pan law affects our stereo mix, mono compatibility, stereo width, depth and how far we can pan elements, if it does..

I feel like I increase my intelligence each time I watch one of your tutorials. Thanks man.
What a gem of a video! Man you’ve been killing it on RUclips for almost a decade!
great as always!
love when you putting out stuff like this. and interesting to listening to when you learning us stuff like half power point. this is the stuff what I am looking for when I am searching for good advices on the tube.
cheers!
Thanks for taking the time to do this. I was just having a friendly argument the other day and could have used it as ammo. You're doing a great job putting education like this on RUclips.
A great explanation of a topic that I stumbled upon today and couldn't find a clear explanation for. Top vid!
one of the best teachers out there. i always learn something new & helpful
really clear explanation. good examples also. thanks
Great stuff!
So glad of this video, it had me fooled !
Nice work!
Super helpful!!
One more time David, Thank you
😂💀🤣bro the intro on this one is to die for 🤣
Before watching, again another primordial topic by Mixbus, i know this will change a lot the way i see and do things.
Let's go for 11 mins of happyness :p
+David Boura done! ok, i never heard about that topic, and i don't know how to apply this in Bitwig.
How much would it cost for you to teach me how to do 2 or 3 particular things for my music?
+David Boura One million dollars.
Isn't the pan law more important mainly when you use a pan automation during mixing?
Right, you will tend to adjust accordingly to the pan law, and the result will be the same. So the only way to use it proficiently is AT THE END of the mix, just to check if with other settings the center will work better. Aight?
The Pan law only applies to whichever daw you are working with ....the daw makes the mid signal weighting according to your pan law selection, to which you will obviously react and compensate . However once the mix is out of the daw, remember that the pan law of whichever equipment you are playing that mix is applied to it. -3db is a good area to keep away from over or under compensating.
I saw a video about power point of balancing the low end with bass and kick...would it be relative to do this with vocal and snare...I have and edgy upper mid voice...similar to a snare or at least my ears percieve it so...would it be good to balance them like kick and bass but just eq them differently?
Who else is learning how to pan during pandemic
Ima use this for a bar
LOL
Hi David,
Great video as always I understood everything you said.
My producer buddy suggested I pan everything hard left and hard right WHILE tracking drums.
His theory is since it’s a mono signal we should record only on one side not both.
After recording, you then set your pan knobs to your normal desired positions.
Any thoughts?
Ok thanks again !!!
amazing thank you man!!!! Do you think it would be possible to send you over a mix of mine for constructive criticism? I feel the only way to improve myself further would be to get advice from an amazing engineer like you. If so, please let me know where to send it. Thanks!!
I think this is the problem with Presonus studio one 3. After switching from protools to S1. I hear a slight dip in the middle making it sound wider compared to protools. After doing a null test I couldn't hear a difference but THIS MAKES SO MUCH SENSE BECAUSE AS OF NOW THERE IS NO OPTION TO CHANGE THE PAN LAWS IN STUDIO ONE. Ok so please someone how I can fix this cause it been really stressing me out. I want it to sound like the pan law on -3. It sound like studio defaults on -6.
Thankssssss
Man, the difference is enormous. The -6 mix sounds like very professional Chris Lorde Alge mix, much wider and more professional and -2 sounds like an ordinary amateur mix, yet well recorded.
2015? I've wasted 4 years of my life...lol. Big ups David. Is this the same as using m/s and just turning down the center?
It's not the amount of middle lowering but the ratio of sending the sum of the sides to one side.
Wouldn´t it be best to mix with the pan law set the same as in the listeners´ stereo systems? What is the pan standard for such systems?
+ColumbusStStudio To elaborate: there is no 'pan standard' on stereo systems. They are fed a stereo sound-source (eg a CD), into separate L+R channels in the amp, which goes out to separate L+R speakers. A stereo doesn't do mid-side processing - which, effectively, is what the pan law on your DAW applies in order to adjust relative levels at the center (mid) and sides.
When you're mixing, whichever pan law setting you have applied when you bounce/export your file, THAT's what a listener will hear on their hi-fi. This is why, as David adjusted the settings in his DAW, those of us listening on stereo speakers could hear the changes.
So it's normal to lose some volume on the sides if I had my piano and guitar panned hard left and right .....right ?
yep if you didn't it would be mono
Ha, I did a general YT search to find some info on pan law, and who pops up top of the list? Anyway I got the video information, but maybe, just maybe you could answer I quick question: I got a reply on Steinberg forum that pointed to pan law as the reason, but I’m not so sure. I’ve recently been setting up some new templates, and when I was looking at the input meters, I noted there was about a 3dB difference between what was indicated on the input meters to what was indicated on the track meters. Everything set to unity gain, all mono signals, no plug-ins, no trim, no strip processing, nothing, but 3dB less on the track meters. Would that be a pan law setting issue? I can’t see why, because in my case all pan pots were set also set to zero.
@@mixbustv Cheers David. It is odd, I'll look a bit deeper and have a play with the pan law
nice
DO AI HAVE TO COMPRESS EVERY INSTRUMENTS IN MY MIX
Been using equal power pan law. Can this be an issue?
No but it's a very uncommon setting
I like how you sometimes ruin a mix to show what a wrong move would do.
So the next logical question is, how do you get a mix that sounds great both in stereo and in mono..? Turn up the gain of the side info a bit..?
+kye903 read up on M/S techniques
so this is basically to save yourself some time adjusting all the volumes after panning?..
No, just mix, if you know how to do it, you don't even think about this. This is purely educational
👍
Frankly, I never changed the default setting in my DAW which is -3dB, because I just had no reason to.
Btw, could I suggest to stop using all upper case for your video titles? It is actually harder to read and also it is kind of the Internet equivalent of shouting and feels a bit blatant. Just MHO...
I got an ad in the middle to stop watching this tutorial. Lol
i like your videos... but this one is not really clarifying. Listening trough a mono device here. It absolutely not what you are telling. You need to structure this one much better.. I think that you do not understand really the point of this specially with regards to when and why to adjust this...🖖🦊🌟
i hear the same...there is no diference!!
Dude close your eyes and hear the middle sound. When he puts it at -6.0 anything dead center in this case (Vocals) sounds lower.. It may not sound like Much but in a Loud speaker Setting you hear the difference. I like -3.0 and -4.5.. It depends on what you are trying to do and what Music.
