    Great explanation for those who don't know that when you double a signal it increases by a ratio of 3 db. Realy useful when you want to do a continuous panning from side to side

    awesome! Thats the topic im struggling with for years and never found a perfect solution. Because: when working with voiceover im used to limit everything in master to 0 db TP but when doing a mixdown to mono it summs the channels up and so adds 6db which sometimes leads to distorted bounces. the strange thing is , thats only sometimes and its hard to see if its a matter of LUFS or idk. So what would be your approach to do mixdown mono tracks via the stereo out to mono wav without having the struggle of the 6db adding issue? How can i mixdown my VO savely without getting distorted tracks? Setting up the levels of the stereo master bus to -6db? Because when setting the pan mode to -6 everything is not at 0db but at -6 db TP strangely. I wonder if you could help out here

    In Fairlight you get a 3D box to place the sound source in the front, back, sides and overhead. Drag and drop.

    Hey Chris, how's it going. I understand pan law to a degree. -3db P.L hard paned will be half as loud as center paned. What I am confused with, if I export a track with a say -3 P.L. when I import that track back in it is 3db lower than the original, this bugs me.

    Wow! I like what you said about the SSL console defaulting the Stereo Pan Law to -4.6. Does that mean using an SSL plugin and having the Stereo Pan Law set to -3 could present a problem?

    • @mixdownonline
      @mixdownonline  2 года назад +1

      Not at all, that was only on Analog Consoles, not plugins

  • @erkamau9629
    @erkamau9629 2 года назад

    you perceive 3dB louder on speaker but (as in mid side encoding-decoding on mixer) but on the pan control you have to attenuate -6dB, so is -3dB for Left AND Right. Right ? I prefer to work in LCR mode on mono instruments and leave the stereo ons as are. What do you think ?

    Salut Chris!! je sais pas si tu verras mon message car j'utilise Reaper depuis très peut et je me suis rendu compte que le son est beaucoup plus stéreo que cubase, quand j'utilise un exemple superior drummer 3 sur Reaper j'entend que la batterie est beaucoup plus stereo que dans cubase, j'aimerais bien que tu fasses le test Reaper est gratuit et j'aimerais avoir ton opinion la dessus!!!!

    I must have weird ears, because with Pan Law at -3 dB it sounded quieter in the center. The 0 dB setting sounded natural to me, with equal loudness.

    I used to be very concerned about mono mixing when people had many mono listening sources, such as portable radios and older TVs. In today's world, who is listening in mono? Who edits video/film via tape to tape and EDLs any more? Universally it has all moved to digital NLEs. I think mono mixes are like that. Old techniques that no longer are applicable in today's world.

    • @baze3SC
      @baze3SC Год назад

      Distance to the audio source also plays a role. Not every listener is going to be placed exactly in the sweet spot where speakers form an orthonormal basis. The further you move away the more it will sound like a mono source, like two radios placed next to each other. So, no need to overthink it but some form of compensation for that is still useful.
