In this podcast we talk about 2bus compression and what are the most important factors to consider when choosing which compressor to use on the 2 bus, VCAs, Opto, Fet, Vari-MU, we have
a lot of choices, some are great for rock, some are better for EDM,
some other for Pop or HipHop and in some cases you need a transparent compressor that just add a lil bit of glue without being too heavy handed.

spot on. theory is always welcome and nice to hear a succinct description of compressor types. i think it takes time to hear how a compressor is working and for many (myself included) it isn't that obvious in the early days of getting our heads around this area, so the theory helps us to identify what we are hearing and why. keep em coming treacle, your insights are really important to us :)

I'm not the kind of guy that comments on youtube videos very often, but your content obviously gets me to do it now. ;) I probably learned more from your videos than from all of dave pensado's itl segments or the like.. I don't think there is anything wrong with a podcast when there is nothing to show anyway...
I'm mainly mixing metalcore type stuff and for the 2bus, i tend to use the ozone limiter or simple clipping more and more and let the compressor do less work. Ozone gives you very deep control over how much pumping and how much clipping you want, and you could also blend it with the dry signal to create a parallel chain (if you don't wanna have inifinte ratio... parallel chains have an exponentially rising ratio though, i know...) I don't really use the 2bus compressor to get more transients or punch, instead i try to get that in the mix and get it to work well with the limiters/clippers (well, loudness is an issue for me...)

I have a question; I’m looking to buy my first 2 bus comp. I do mostly electronic music (techno, dubb tech, deep house, minimal and some dance stuff too), and by vids I’ve seen, the Drawmer 1978 has a sound that I like, and pumps hard, giving a rythmic effect that can modify in a good way the groove. In my country there is no Drawmer dealer, so the closest alternative in the price point that I can get, is the new Warm buss comp. I’ve heard that an SSL type comp would be a good choice for EDM, but when sidechained this one will pump as the Drawmer? There are few vids and opinions of the Warm buss-comp, so what do you think about it for a first buss compressor?
They're night and day. I don't know the warm, the SSL G comp in general (best being the Wes Audio Dione that I have) in totally different from the 1978, which is warm and fuzzy and doesn't really pump that much, it's a FET comp while the G is a vca (watch my series on the different types and what are good for), you'd want more an SSL type for that and the 76 to warm up synths for example. But I can't speak about the warm, never heard it, I'd save and get the Wes, gold DBX vca's in it, true stereo but most important 5 settings for the sidechain which is what you need for your genre, not want, need. Also the THD is off the hook on it

I for one find 2bus compression for mixing to be for the most part constricting and rarely use it. Thats not to say never but rarely. May haps I will play with it towards the end and in certain circumstances it can add a new texture that can be sonically pleasing but I almost never enjoy the effect as a whole. The mastering dude will typically have a better ear for it, a superior workspace and more suitable gear for these tasks so I prefer to leave my 2bus with him. My $00.02.
i mostly use the bus compressor just to duck in the snare for about 4dB (very fast attack, fastest release possible), but i'm not sure whether it's always the right thing to do, because i mostly do metal songs
That's A way to use it but you'd be better off doing on the snare itself, or drum bus, 2bus compression is a lot more that just that.

Is it advisable to use a mixing/tracking hardware processors for mastering, e.g. a multiband-compressor?

So basically just try everything if you don't know how your compressors sound? I do House usually. Deep House in particular. Have a few compressors but have only used them a few times on kick or synth bass but not over an entire bus.
Not just try, you need to know them all, which is a bit more in-depth. If you are only mixing for yourself, you can spend all the time you want but, me or any other professional, we have deadlines, we can't guess every time, we can't (and obviously we don't because we know by now) try everything, we usually know what'll work for what, maybe we have a couple or 3 options but it takes 5 minutes to understand and decide

oh no, I am mixing for myself, but for tracks to be released. The better I can make them before sending them off to be mastered, the better.
It seems this 2 bus compression may be what I am missing to get my peaks and crests tighter. My mixes have become way more balanced after watching your video talking about it.
Never even thought to even look at the waveform as an indicator of balance.

I never trust these gready manufacturers and there lies, but the Iron looks serious! another piece I'm ready to pull the trigger on is the 1978. it looks like a beast. the only things that makes me hesitate, believe it or not is the Cost. I know that's a dumb as thing to think. but for a grand I'm like...... what's the catch, where did they cut corners
