    In part 10 of our Ultimate Compression Tutorial we talk about
    eq before or after compression? Should you compress
    after the eq? Should you eq before compressing?
    Probably one of the most asked question on the subject
    of compression and mixing in general.
    We take a crack at it in this video showing some examples
    on vocals, drums and master bus.

    By far the best compression tutorials Ive come across. I have to admit, what you showed in this last video would take a very experienced ear to use correctly. When you were going thru the vocal moves, I couldnt understand why you were adding each element. But at the end it sounded much much better. You have a great set of musical ears. Thanks so much for sharing your knowledge!

    love this video, very informative, shows that there really are "no rules", when it comes to EQ-COMPRESSION or COMPRESSION-EQ. I love that there are examples of both in your mix chain (which is a very complex mix chain for beginners or novice). I have a very strict chain of rules I follow for mixing. #1listen, balance. #2 listen, rebalance. #3 TAKE A BREAK! start thinking about what you heard (this part was really cool, that part was kind of lame, but another part was phenomenal). #4 Loop the phenomenal part (it my only be 2 or 4, 6 or 8 bars) then follow rule #1 and rule #2. Rule #5 TAKE A BREAK! by now this is etched in your brain for all eternity, go for a walk in the park. go wash your car, cut the grass, wash the dogs.....you get it. All the time you are hearing this tune in your head, think about where you want to go with it. What the end result should be. Make a plan and stick to it. Rule #6 see Rule #1 at this point you want to be listening for "THINGS THAT BUG YOU"! It could be certain frequencies that just pop out, in this case you definitely don't compress because this will make them worse. EQ would be the first place to "start". It maybe things that sound great but, they just aren't "sitting in the mix" where you want them to. In this case, Compression may be a good place to "start". Rule #7, TAKE A BREAK! RULE #8 don't spend hours and hours behind the speakers or headphones,,,,,,,,, TAKE MULTIPLE BREAKS your ears will be better informed.

    Cool tutorial and a never-exhausting topic :) One thing may seem a bit counter-intuitive though, and that is the fact that as a first step you chose to do a substantial (10 dB) Eq boost before the compression. I agree that eq-ing before the compression should help the Comp. do its job better. With that in mind, my course of thought would be that one might primarily do cuts+filters to shape/tame the signal before hitting the Comp. and maybe do Eq boosting after the Comp. (when the signal is already leveled out), as by boosting we probably just want to "highlight the good stuff" in the track. This is however taken into consideration with further processing that you take on the track. Keep up the good work man !!!

    I have to admit I agree with most everything I've heard in this video (though I only watched 10 mins of it. I am a 20 year vet engineer and I rarely agree with most youtube tutorials because the creators are usually morons, this guy is not. He is more in the realm of just every mixer is an artist and does things differently. I don't even do 2 songs with always the same techniques.
    I do usually my eq however post compression and here's my thinking: On a well recorded sound that's not way off the EQing is to make that sound go well with other sounds. I'm constantly going back and forth between tracks. Like the presenter says changing the Eq if it was PRE changes the way the compressor hits and I don't want to have to keep qoing back to my compressor every time I make a mix EQ tweak. He does state that his PRE EQ is usually subtractive. Good advice there. When I do PRE EQ it's usually subtractive but I only do it when someone sends me a badly recorded track with too much bass that will over trigger the gain reduction. The Mixing EQ for me is post, with occassional subtractive EQ ALSO pre. Good job on the video.

    hmm... seems like you would love dynamic eqs.
    If multi-band compression is bugging you phase-wise, messing the sound too much, dynamic eqs may be the answer here.

    Hi! Indeed, one of the best tutorials you can find on YT, it's not only in-depth, but also it's just a pleasure to watch & learn :D But I have one question: you seem to have so many different EQ & compressor plugins, which theoretically should do the same job, but since we know, that every algorythm works a little differently, the result is also a little different. How do you know, which plugin should you take? If you'd have to use only stock plugins, will the result be much different? Cheers

    First off, i appreciate your knowledge once again. Im a Producer/Engineer but i love to keep current and get others views and opinions. Your compression techniques are great.
    Question , regarding when you Trim the -10db cut.
    Would it be better to Gain stage before entering your SSL channels? Do the Trim on the event trim, or even a simple Trim plug so it enters the SSL at an optimum level(lets just use the standard -18dbfs)???
    I recently switched to a whole new DAW and system so im planning out my best way to gain stage and get optimum levels to enter my plugs

    When I learn something I try to understand the core idea of an issue first. Compressors and EQ's are clear, but I got a question about Multiband Comp/Dynamic EQ choice. Can you share some of your philosophy on choosing a proper item for a vocals? Because those are usually pretty dynamic and we all want them to be nice, even and transparent...
    And one more thing. What is the name of a song in that video? I like it)))

  • @tdb517

    I don't understand why you remove the very high with the tilt plug in to add some back with the maag right after. Is it only because of the sound of these particular plug ins?
    And, by the way, do you intend to make mixing videos for less heavily produced music, like jazz?

      Comp first just to catch peaks, this is a comp solely as a tool right now. Then after, EQ and one more comp to have the tone.

    Hey mate, Could you please explain why at 19:45 you use a multiband comp to tame the high mids and then a eq after to boost it by one DB.? does it really have that much different effect on the signal than to have just lowered the ratio of the comp (which by leaving out the additional eq saves on cpu)
    Thank you, and great video!

    • @TheDrfrankenstien
      @TheDrfrankenstien 9 лет назад

      Ah okay, thank you. That makes a lot of sense now, but would a db of make up gain on that band not do the same thing without having to add another plugin. ( I ask because it's crucial I save CPU) however If it makes an important and perceivable difference, I could also freeze render that track/s and save CPU that way.

    • @TheDrfrankenstien
      @TheDrfrankenstien 9 лет назад

      ***** Thanks again I appreciate you taken the time to explain this, very insightful look into the precision involved in just a single decision you made. which is never found in videos because they would be hours long.
      Maybe you'd consider doing a video in the future with a few examples like this one, on why such precision and attention to detail is necessary to create a great mix. It would be a massive asset to the novice engineers who over look these and I don't believe there's another video like that online. Just a thought.
      Thanks mixbus.

    Hello mixbusstv man. I have a question. Please help me. im looking for a new pre amp. I do alot of pop and edm type music. Right now i have an avalon 737 and my mic is a u87 ai. With my vocals I get alot of mud around 150 to 250 range. Even when I try to eq lightly its still there but when i do aggressive eq, my voice sounds thin and that mudiness is still there. Its really wierd.
    i know its the avalon 737 and not my mic because when I connect it to my profire 2626 pre amp the irritating mudiness is gone.
    Anyways. Can you recommend a good pre amp for me to get for pop and edm vocals. I was looking at api 512 and tone beast. Im scared to get the neve 1073 because im scared it will have the mudiness the avalon has. Any recommendations? Thank you

      Yes bro the Avalon squashes your vocals when it passes thru that amp, we tested 3 different amps in school and i would say if you want a really nice vocal you can go for the Millennia amp, that amp out of all of them sounded really nice, the Avalon amp is usually for like hip hop artist to get that darker squashed sound they would get back in the day. hope this helps a bit
