David, your ethic is supreme, your communication effortless, and your passion and professionalism, apparent. Love ths channel, brother - word up!
This is the best audio engineering channel! Just discovered this gem and already learned so much. Thanks David! I came to this video from another one of your videos and it's amazing how you can clearly explain such a simple, but really fundamental topic.
Hard to see how (16 lonely people) can thumb down this video! They must be his haters :). This video is absolutely fantastic! Those people could really learn something from this guy! Great teacher! Thanks for sharing your knowledge! The world needs more of this now than ever! Shalom
Of the several I’ve watched, this is the most clear, comprehensive and concise explanation that I’ve seen on YT of how to approach gain staging when working with a DAW. Thank you!
I made a question about the clip gain and you answered really fast. Thanks a lot for being so dedicated to the channel. In the end of the video you explain it really clear. But i deleted the question before i refreshed the page. Thats the best channel ever.
Just stopping by to say thank you again. You mentioned unity gain 100 times before in your videos. I didn't quite understand that although I knew about the importance of gain staging. I kept gain staging in my current mix stable but wondered why I got such an low level in sum and some inconsistency overall the mix. I checked each track an realized the in and ouput levels on many plugin chains differ, some differ even very much. I realized immediately what unity gain is and matched all in and outs. What a difference that is in sound and room in the mix now. The plugins seem to work and sound a lot better too now. Overall it's a complete new improved mix. I'm overly glad I stepped a small step further in understanding. Took me some weeks :) cheers
Dave, thank you, thank you, thank you. Your generosity is so appreciated. Your tips and insights are some of the most solid, consistent and helpful I've seen. For sharing your gifts and talents, I hope - and pray, you feel as blessed as we do!
I cannot thank you enough for your concise, detailed and informative videos. Your approach to teaching makes it not only easy, but a true pleasure to learn. Your confident yet humble manner sets your lessons apart from the sea of opinion, superstition and misinformation that can engulf one on RUclips. I have been a professional, working musician since the 1970s, and am just learning to record at home, in the box. As someone who grew up in an analog world (and had a home studio in the 1980s) there are many rules and techniques that I have to learn - and UN-learn! I just wanted you to know that your help is truly appreciated, and from what I read in the comments section of your videos shows me that I am not alone in feeling this way. You're a gem. I wish you and yours good health and contentment. Cheers, and - in bocca al lupo!
Thank GOD you're 100% giving facts. I've argued almost all your points with people. I'm sending them this video. Maybe they will listen to you. Try telling this to people who never heard of floating point, or think Mastering engineers need a 10 DB of "headroom" or else they "have nowhere to go" LOL. THANKS!
David, another fantastic video! I’m just actually getting into hybrid mixing and this was so helpful. I’ve revisited some mixes that I did in the box and found that I absolutely have to gain stage a whole bunch to be able to run them through the hardware. Thanks again.

this is sooooo important!...took me a bit to figure out why some of my plugins were clipping. I noticed my channel meter wasn't clipping, so i was not sure wtf was going on? after knowing about "gain staging" it made all the sense to me. Very important for people starting out to know this.
I have started to think that if you’re giving all that information for free, how much will you give in your mixing and mastering courses!!! I am so much interested in buying one of your course to learn God knows what!!! Thanks again!! ♥️🇨🇦🇨🇦

Just watched a Presonus video where Joe Gilder said Gain is just volume and if you're starting out, don't worry about gain staging just mix. That's a big help, Wow! Crazy advice.
Wow! that info about converters overstating their abilities is just so important! stupid simulacra! it's so important to know what our converters can Actually do for gain staging. i just started noticing that my Focusrite 18i20 (a very entry level converter) actually sounds much better at about two bars of green (-18) on my inputs, than just hitting the yellow (-3) that so many videos advise. the advise of putting a clip limiter on the input of samples and such was great too. this all makes so much sense now! on a separate note: It's awesome that you actually explain things exactly the way they are, not the way advertisers, manufacturers, or common knowledge states. your precise explanation of Attack on a compressor video helped so much! Until your video, i couldn't align what i was hearing when adjusting attack, with what i 'knew' attack to be. Of Course attack adjusts the time it takes to get to Full ratio, not just Any compression! that's what i was hearing and couldn't reconcile with my flawed definition of attack... Thank you for this video! I am just getting started in mixing and have a comment in regards to your comment about losing Fader Resolution ... the point as I understand it is specific to actually "moving" the Fader. IE: moving the Fader up or down a 1/2 centimeter from "0" will bump or decrease the db much less than if you move Fader up or down a 1/2 centimeter starting from -20. I think you can always type in exactly what you want so technically, you aren't limited ... but if you look at the tick marks next to the Fader, the resolution is not linear. The Fader's resolution is much more "touchy" the farther away from 0 you start, the steps are much bigger. Hope that makes sense. Doesn't mean you can't move from -20 to -21 but that if you try to use the Fader to do so, it will require much more of a micro-movement than if you were to go from 0 to -1 with the Fader. And yeah, since DAWs function in the digital domain, you can just use the keyboard and type in the value so you're not constrained to big movements the farther you are from 0 - but it isn't as convenient if you are riding the mix or like to user Faders. That is how I understand it at least.
You are a bit confused and take mixed information from the analog world, old 16bit DAWs and other things.. What happens in analog don't happen in digital, and since 24/32bit resolution we don't have resolution issues anymore. But most importantly, you don't use faders to do gain staging. Gain for gainstaging, faders for mixing.
Thank you for making this video, David. I have been looking for this very kind of information in many books, to no avail. This is exactly what I was looking for. Simple, precise information, with reasons behind what you're saying! You really are the real deal, David. May God keep you and bless you.
For those who don’t get gain staging, it’s leveling your sounds below a certain volume level BEFORE mixing with the faders(NOT the faders on your individual sound) but the mixer
So what u saying is dont touch the faders till your done using all your plugins on each track but making sure you dont clip (reaching a certain output level) then going across every track to turn them up or down by ear so they properly sit in with the mix, so the master doesn't clip? Another question: the limiter is used to turn things up if your overall sound is too low because you've made plenty of head room let's say around -10db to -6db with the limiter? THX!

@@malthethiefguydenreturnmys7834 soo, If I'm correct gain staging has to do with maintaining a balance below a certain volume to provide headroom as your signal output is increasing after usage of those plugins. David there is one thing that concerns me everytime I start mixing as gain staging for others - for me it's ROUTING ; I know It should help to navigate through session, but I cannot set it at the begining the way that will prevent complex changes 10 hours later. So now, after dozens of that kind of situations I spend a lot of time considering how should I route channels, instead of just acting. Great video! I’m quite new to mixing, I use midi plugins for my drums and bass, the only thing I record is guitar. Should I only worry about recording levels for guitar and that’s it? Obviously for the mix I’ll stay below 0 db to not clip at any point. In other words, should I worry about midi clipping at any point?
P.s. your channel is the best mixing channel I’ve found on RUclips 🤘🏻
Thank you bro God bless you!
