    This video is more like a podcast, we wanted to address few things
    about 2bus compression, eq and processing in general, if have plugins or hardware gear on your master bus, should leave these on when you print your mix before sending the track to mastering or not?
    Also the difference between Mastering and 2bus processing and
    a couple of other things like what levels your mix should be before
    sending it to a mastering engineer and so on..
    Hope you enjoy it!

    "It's just you f**king around on your own mix again" - classic! You just described about 90% of what I do in the Cubase. Maybe this year I can bring that down to 80%

    I've been asked only once, by a Mastering Engineer to remove my 2 bus compressor from the mixes. I usually just have the SSL comp and the most it hits is 4db compression.
    I use it more for the glue and imaging it imparts. I had no issues removing it, however, I warned the client that we mixed, therefore, made decisions based on how things sounded going through that compressor on the bus, so the mixes will sound different. They were fine with it and I obliged. Leave your ego at the door!. Do what's best for the client.

    Man, I don't know how you do it, but everything you say in these videos is just pure gold... I wish I had been given advice like this 15 years ago when I started trying mixing my own material. I'm finding there's so much bullshit and misinformation being spread around about mixing and especially mastering that I almost stopped reading mixing articles and forums and watching videos until a I found your channel. I very much like your no bullshit approach, just pure useful info! And you said the most important thing about mastering: to have another set of ears listen to your material in a different environment. I learned it the hard way that if I do it myself, most of time it's just fucking around... Thanks again a keep the videos coming!

    You are VERY entertaining and, BTW, quite correct about everything. I say this despite the fact that if one of my clients I produce should stumble upon this "podcast", I may lose the extra perks I get for Mastering our mixes!
    Yes, probably different ears would be a fine option, but my clients generally can't afford the $1k and above Mastering engineers here in Nashville charge.
    I do not subscribe to the loudness maxims that have been fashionable the past 20 years. I'm in the George Massenburg camp, and I sense you (perhaps PRIVATELY...) would be part of the fold.
    This video should be heard by every home studio enthusiast, producer, and beginning engineer...and for some of us more experienced guys as well.
    Excellent work!

    I'm glad to know I'm on the right....track.😁 I Iike your "loudness" video because that helped me to get the bump and shine in my mix before using any eq/comp on the 2 buss. I leave head room to eq bottom and top end on the entire mix at that point and only compress to 'glue' it. I like to mix without eq or comp on my master then add as described. Thanks David I get 80% of my info from Mixbustv.

    Well said David! Once more! :) I can't remember myself not using 2buss processing. Vertigo, Maag Eq, Slate VTM. No standard settings. Depends the material. But they glue tracks together and make mixing faster.

    I like backwards mixing, beginning with the master fader, then the busses and then then tracks that neet it.
    I also like Harrison Mixbus on Linux, it has most of the necessary EQ, compression and saturation built in, just like eh... a mixer!

  • @soulchorea

    I like the tips here; only one contradiction I wanted to point out. You mentioned that mastering involves evening out the variations between the different songs. But then you mentioned that you don't need to open a different project and put "extra processing" because there isn't another pair of ears in the equation. However, I feel like it definitely does require another project/session to be open with some more processing, so that you can even out the variations between the different songs.

    • @soulchorea
      @soulchorea 9 лет назад

      ***** yeah, I was more pointing it out to speak to the idea that even if you mixed the song perfectly to your liking, you might have to do some extra processing to it after that once you have the context of the other songs, right? And so you kind of have to be willing to make some changes to a mix you absolutely love, if it just doesn't flow with the rest of your EP/album.

    Great video. I'm always wondering what I should do if I don't intend to send music to a mastering engineer when I'm just making tracks for myself and my friends to listen to. Typically I'm using Ozone6 either on the Master Bus after I've gotten my mix the way I want it or sometimes (very rare, but just to try how to feels) I open the bumped track in Ozone6 standalone app and try that out to see if I arrive at something that sounds better when comparing finishing the track in both ways. It would be great to see a video on what to do if you don't intend to send the track to a mastering engineer in general. I posted a similar question on the discussion page... I can't find much out there on what are the common things to listen for beyond comparing to reference tracks (you have a really cool video on that topic) and then doing listening tests on various speakers. Thanks for all these tutorials, man! Learning how to mix is indeed a long journey...

    Greetings David! How does one process individual stems through 2bus processing (Neve 542’s) for mastering without over compressing all stems. (Side chain?)

    • @mixbustv
      @mixbustv  3 года назад +2

      I think I have a video on that, but it's a live stream, hard to find. It's gonna be hard and always a compromise. You're not ever going to process stems in a way that when you put them together they will sound like the mix WITH 2bus processing, ever. Especially with a saturator on it. Compression, still not but yes you could use external sidechain but it won't ever be the same. I made examples in that video of various compromises you could live with but in the end, it depends on what you need the stems for.

    Hello David,
    Great Video! watched it 2 times, searched google and gearslutz 3 times to understand what 2-buss is. :(
    is it the same as the master buss? lets say you have a basic track with kick, bass, snare, lead, and hihat. the one final channel that they automatically are sent to (known as the stereo output/mix-buss) is the 2-buss?

    "...it's not mastering anymore, it's just you f!?&ing around..." Haha, very true. I put compressors, EQ and tape sims on my bus if I like it and put a limiter with max 2-3dB gain reduction for soundcloud or whatever export and I wouldn't dream to call that mastering.
